Do you think the Book is sentient in some way? Do you think it attached itself to Viking somehow? Was it always so destructive? Or did its original author make it with good intentions? Has it ever experienced anything but darkness? Was its creation originally out of curiosity, were passages ever written with love?

i do think that, in some ways, the Book is alive. Viking hears it calling to him. there's a promise in the whispers. the author is someone familiar that he doesn't remember, and the words inside it may have been comforting before it tore him to shreds.

im not able to find the clip right now (it's in Viking's end of Dominion VOD), but:

"before he died, viking had a friend that mightve written the Book despite viking warning them against it"

the disclaimer here is that that's me paraphrasing after having watched the vod. but.. isn't that interesting? that Viking knew this was a bad idea? that the author was someone he knew, potentially trusted?

Viking died in an accident. he lost his memories, and lost himself, because something went horribly wrong. something magic.
