We are Bolakoka Aso Ebi. It does not mean that we are known for just Aso Ebi. Think of Aso Ebi as the Nigerian phrase for textiles; if it is about textiles, then you can count us in. Now that Nigerians have branded this culture with everything Lace, Ankara, Atiku etc we might as well expect to see it in the English dictionary soon. After all, how many people in the world apart from Nigerians can wear 1000 yards of a particular fabric in the same color and design at the same event! Aso Ebi has set the trend in particular ways that we will discuss later. Nigerians should be celebrated for this trend! Whilst we dwell on that, let us remember that some of the intricacies of Aso Ebi from time immemorial is that it just used to be for close family, it later moved to the larger members of family, then friends of the family, friends of friends of the family and so on. In this photo, the bolakoka team covered Aso Ebi for the siblings of the bride and groom. They provided their concept and budget and it was just wonderful that they all agreed to the fabrics they would all wear as much as they could. The focus was on Alaari (the color that is now referred to as Magenta today) and the guys and ladies danced around it very well...notice the Alaari colored shoes as well...lol. We begin the start to something that we hope will portray the essence of a beautiful culture that started in Southwestern Nigeria which has now become Pan Nigerian. Bolakoka Wednesday will share tips on planning Aso Ebi beautifully, an experience that should never be financially stressful or otherwise for the celebrant or their family & friends. How to budget & plan creatively and most of all for everyone to be happy, dressing up for your event joyfully, not grudgingly. Mrs Oluwakemi Tokede contacted The Bolakoka Team in May 2016 for her December 2016 wedding. Her focus was for her fabrics to be unique, tasteful, very affordable and not-a-burden. She was very concerned about her friends and careful to pick what she knew her friends and family would willingly and not forcefully be a part of. We took all the details she gave and produced a memory that she has completely cherished. We love the way she gushed when she saw the first Aso Ebi that went out, her testimony kept pouring in and we couldn't be more grateful to God for her #ExperienceBolakoka (please check next post for what her friends had to say) Kemi is a #BolakokaWoman who expressed the strong values and ethics that we care about at Bolakoka. Early in the nineties, Akwete clothes were widely advertised as wearing apparels and works of art. The effects of the wide publicity led to increased demand as well as increase in the number of weavers. Many women took up weaving as a full time occupation with the establishment of a Textile Training Center at Aba in Abia State, Nigeria which produced famous weavers like Madam Jorji Nmereji Mgbokwo, fondly called "Madam Mgbokwo Jorji." On her death, the family changed its name from Jorji to George (the name given to the Indian Madra imported into Southeastern Nigeria). Get to know more about her from www.nhncouture.com About a year ago, as I began to explore how to position myself in the textile and fabric industry and solve some of the business challenges I was facing, I stumbled on @nhn_couture on Instagram. I was not such a fan initially but I just kept following her. The first shock I got was when she threw out details of one of her fabric suppliers...who does that? Another shock was when she said she wanted to meet 20, but later changed to 50 ladies in the fabric business. Ehn ehn ...I thought, how do you just keep opening yourself up for people to see...don't you know you will be vulnerable? At that point I remembered the scripture, a general principle that works for anyone, "if you want to receive, you must give". That is it! I thought again, this woman is blessed and I must meet her and greet her. It happened that I was picked to be part of the 50 to my pleasant surprise...I could already feel that Aunty Nkechi was a sister to me and I looked forward to our meeting. CULTURE SPEAKS A'nger is a fabric by the Tiv speaking people of Benue State, Nigeria. It is a traditionally hand-woven fabric with black and white yarns to create beautiful features that make the cloth appear like live Zebra skin. It is sometimes called and linked with its cultural source as A'nger U Tiv. It is normally used in the decoration of sons and daughters of Tiv and worn by Tiv elders/chiefs during Tiv traditional council meetings. The textile signifies Honesty and Sincerity. The black and white stripes symbolize the nature of Zebra in the wild, one among the most peaceful harmless and beautiful looking animals.
