I’m not even in the mood for real.
Blue My Mind Blue My Mind is about a girl who is going through a transformation that is naturally a metaphor for puberty. The movie is filmed well. It’s well paced. Luna Wedler puts in an attention grabbing performance. There aren’t a lot of practical effects, but they’re well done. BUT LET ME BE HONEST HONEST, the movie was SO blah for me, personally. The reason being is, Mia is far too unlikeable of a character for me to want to root for or give a crap about. She makes ALL the wrong decisions, from the get go. It’s one dumb decision after another, and her crippled decision making skills never goes away. It starts with, “On my first day of school I immediately decide I want to hang out with the wrong crowd.” Listen, from me to you, if you’re hanging out with a bunch of people an ONE of them drinks ketchup straight from the bottle like it’s nothing, that’s fine. If TWO of them are drinking ketchup out of from the bottle like it’s nothing, you need to reevaluate your WHOLE life. Even though I liked the ending, when I really think about it, even that stuff was straight disrespectful. I could not get behind this girl, because she’s bringing the worst of it one herself, every time. Not once does she make the smart decision. Am I suppose to feel for her? Am I supposed to sympathize for her? That’s hard to do when she is the type of person I’d be rooting against in a horror movie. If Jason Vorhees was running around slashing people up, I’d be like, “Yo, Jason, you need to get Mia. All she does is screw up, intentionally. Smarter better people were killed for less!” Listen, I lean a little cold. I’m not heartless. Movies effect me emotionally more often than I’d usually admit. But I can’t with a character who’s this self-destructive in a movie that wants you to sympathize with her. Movies starring self-destructive characters can be great, but it’s either because of the suspense of waiting for the comeuppance, like in Josh and Bennie Safdie’s Good Time, or because the film shows you that the character you are following is trying to be good or is trying to overcome his or her self-destructive behavior. How is Bojack Horseman more likeable and sympathetic to me than this 16 year old girl facing something she can’t control? That’s crazy. Anyway, so I felt meh throughout most of this movie. This movie struggled to hold my attention most of the time. I could never suggest it. I wouldn’t watch it again. Some people like it. It has a lot of buzz. That’s something. This film didn’t appeal to me, but that doesn’t mean its a bad film. Usually, when I don’t like most of a movie but it has a strong ending or climax, I give it a 2/5. I’ll bump this one up to a 3 because it is competently made and performed. It just failed to make me feel anything but indifference. If I sound upset or disgruntled, it’s not because of anything that’s explicitly happening in the movie. It’s because I’m so disappointed at my indifference. The movie doesn’t want you to feel indifference. It wants you to feel bad, and I want to be there with this movie. I want to experience what people who are giving this movie high scores experienced, but I can’t. I can’t get over this kind of depiction of a character that makes her seem relentless unlikable to me in a movie that’s supposed to tug at some heart strings. Errors of the Human Body I learned about this film in horror circles, so let me be the first to say, if you’re like me and expecting body horror, lower your expectations. Lower them by a lot. Errors of the Human Body is more of a drama than anything. Take the average medical drama, preferably one that takes itself seriously, make it about genetic engineering, and put that bad boy on HBO. There’s research, there’s people fighting over the research, there’s the dramatic results of the research. That’s Errors of the Human Body. If that sounds like your sort of thing, you’re in for a good time. This movie lets the actors and the characters do the heavy lifting, and they succeed. Michael Eklund, Karoline Herfuth, and Tómas Lemarquis all put in a great performance. I’m going to say it, Keroline Herfuth is another person who deserves to blow up. Look, Hollywood stays asleep. Don’t even get me started on how Fiona Dourif hasn’t blown up yet. ANYWAY, the movie puts a lot of time (ie, all of its time) into these characters, exploring their complexities and evolving relationships. It’s good. It’s good stuff. Everyone gets to be chill, everyone gets to be fun, everyone gets to be a prick. The pacing was good until the end. I felt like it lingered on some scenes a little too long. It’s actually a tad more complex than that, but the best I can describe it without going into spoilers. Some things are a little drawn out towards the end, but it doesn’t hurt the film so much. The mood is gray, and empty, and melancholy- intentionally so. The practical effects are mostly better than I expected. The blood is great. You can’t tell me that these mice weren’t harmed in production, I SEENT IT (I’m just saying, the stuff with the mice looked real. I’m not really claiming it was). There is an effect near the end that’s just ok. I don’t think it was bad, in fact I’ve seen some real life equivalents so it is accurate, but you do know that it is an effect and in a movie that plays things so down to Earth maybe it is a bit jarring. The make-up work is right where it needs to be. This isn’t a movie I would watch again, I wouldn’t buy it, I don’t think you need to go out looking for it, but I did enjoy it while it was on. What can I say, I watched ALL of House. I’m not immune to the appeal of medical dramas, and clearly I’m not immune to the appeal of sci-fi medical dramas either. Go ahead and turn this into a show, HBO. Trust me, and then hire Fiona Dourif.

Shows that made my 2017 better
So last year I made a list of shows that made my year better. Now I will say that 2016 was a FAR WORSE year than 2017 was for me. In 2016 I had academic pressure than was awful and I started a new school and all my friends ended up in different classes than me together, so that was fun. But then came 2017 and was all around just AWSOME and along with that awesome-ness came some amazing shows. Last year I just made a bullet list, but I thought that this year I should make some mini reviews, so here I go:
Fist off, my 2017 was dominated by animated shows/anime, so my eyes have really been opened to this amazing artform this year. HERE I GO:
My hero Academia/Boku no hero Academia
What an awesome show. I watched this in November/December and I love the premise, characters and plot. It has really breathed some life into the superhero genre and is an all-together fun look at what it would be like if everyone in the world had different super-powers. It has stunning animation and the manga is also super-cool and goes in a great direction. Both the anime and manga is super-recommended.
Favorite character(s): I love Todoroki, he is awesome (and I’m a slut for angsty backstory so…). Deku is great. Actually, can I just write every character here? except Mineta, fuck Mineta!
Greatest qualities about the show: The character dynamics! The way the characters interact with each other is immaculate and they just fit together great. I also really like how each arc is structured and paced.
Negatives: The girls are sometimes a little bit passive for my liking, and if there was an arc with Mineta dying I would not be mad.
Bojack Horseman
I binged this show and fell in love. What might just appear as just a wacky adult cartoon at first glance (and first couple of episodes) is actually a deep depiction of many modern-day topics and problematics such as depression, alcoholism, drug-use, sexuality, sex work, feminism, politics and of course life in Hollywoo(d). The human-like animals might be jarring at first, but it uses the character designs to its advantage with hilarious animal-puns and situations alongside making the show more lighthearted despite the shows heavy subject-matter.
The show is about the horse Bojack who was a famous sitcom star in the `90s and his slump of a life post sitcom star life and his journey back to stardom. The blend between humor and chilling, haunting realism is amazing to watch unfold alongside clever and real character development that is beautiful to watch. Ironically the most aesthetically absurd looking show on this list has the most realistic story. Great social commentary disguised as a comedy.
Favorite character(s): Everyone is flawed in Bojack Horseman, but the most interesting characters in this show for me are Bojack and Diane. So, I would say Diane is my favorite to observe.
Greatest qualities about the show: The way it discusses social issues. Its stunning and thought-provoking.
Negatives: It’s a little bit slow and odd in the beginning and some might find it a little too sad.
Rick and Morty
I discovered this show around Easter time and WOW! No show like any other on this list handles surrealism and absurdist comedy, parody and satire quite like Rick and Morty. The show about the scientist Rick and his grandson (with his grand-daughter Summer joining inn somtimes) Morty going on wacky space adventures. Ricks dick-ish nature contrasts Morty’s wide-eyed curiosity turned cynicism perfectly. The show has fun world building, alongside a great blend between one-off adventures and overarching plot. Visually the show is both stunning and disgusting making it an interesting aesthetic journey for the viewer. Funny, crazy and surprisingly deep at times. And btw watching Rick and Morty does not make you smarter nor require you to be a super-intellectual.
Favorite character(s): Morty is always delightful.
Greatest qualities about the show: Its really funny and has really great world building/concepts within the show.
Negatives: It sometimes boards on a little to gross and has some growing pain in the start.
This is kind of a shout-out to a second season of show from last year’s list so:
Stranger Things 2
Such a good “sequel”. I enjoyed every moment of the show (even the controversial Chicago episode). The characters developed, the plot developed, the new characters were amazing and tone and aesthetic from the first season was carefully preserved and used immaculately. The 80`s reference game was just as strong. For anyone who has lived under a rock the last year and a half the show (first season at least) is about the mysterious disappearance of middle-schooler Will Beyers. The year is 1983, location Hawkings, Indiana.
Favorite character(s): Steve Harrington deserves the world in season 2. I also really like Mike.
Greatest qualities about the show: Addicting story. SO BEAUTIFULLY SHOT! Amazing acting from everyone.
Negatives: Ok, I lied the Chicago episodes stagnated the plot to some extent. I just don’t hate the episode as much as everyone else.
And last but CERTANTLY not least:
Ok so I’m cheating on this one I watched this show in January but I watched the first episode in December so I’m including it and also I’m so in love and I wanted to include it here rather than next year’s list because I want it fresh in my mind.
Fullmetal Alchemist/Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
So, this entry is technically 2 shows. One was created in 2003 based on a manga by the same name but diverges from the manga around the half-way point because it ran out of material to adapt and goes in its own direction. The other is from 2009 and is a straight adaption of the manga. This creates 2 shows with the same central characters, plot and starting points that diverges GREATLY from each other and they are both amazing!
The plot goes like this; In a world where alchemy developed, you cannot create something with alchemy without having the materials that equals to what you want to make. Example: if you want to create a radio you need all the materials that make up that radio to create it. This is known as equivalent exchange and it cannot be broken.
When the young brothers Edward and Alfonse Elric’s mother dies they try bring her back using alchemy. In the process Edward loses and arm and a leg while Alfonse loses his entire body and is only left with his soul which is now bonded to suit of armor. The brothers must seek out a way to find a way to get their bodies back.
IT IS AMAZING! Both versions are amazing, but I slightly prefer the 2009 version also known as Brotherhood. It explores dark and philosophical themes and questions such as mass genocide, the life of the military, PTSD, fascism, war, politics, what is god/playing god, what is the price of a soul is, loss and most importantly daddy-issues.
There is no end to how much this series deserves praise (mostly referring to Brotherhood here). From the way its gorgeously animated, to the pacing, the way it handles it subject matter and issues and has relatable characters. The character development is perfect, and the plot never meanders or goes into dead ends and concludes beautifully. Even the attention to details is impressive with examples such as the way it shows the characters physically aging and demonstrating where in timeline the scene takes place with subtle hair changes. Fullmetal Alchemist (brotherhood) is like watching someone pouring all the puzzle-pieces out on the table and watching someone cleverly and creatively putting them together, thus creating a magnificent art-piece in the in the process. I would also like to mention one of the most amazing aspects of both versions being the way female characters actions, traits, part in the plot, abilities and dialogue are some of the best female writing I have ever seen. Ironically enough in a work marked towards teenage boys.
Favorite character(s): Fullmetal Alchemist is the kind of show that I like to call having “parks and rec”-syndrome, where genually love everyone, however If I have to pick I might say Winry. I absolutly lover her and I think she is a great role model, hillarious and greatly written.
Greatest qualities about the show: The way it deals with its subject-matter. And also everything else about the show, but especially that.
Negatives: Nothing about the show, just a little girl and her dog that im a little tierd being meme-ed to death on reddit but also kinda laugh so im a little bit conflicted, but there is no negatives that I can think of.
That was it, bye-bye 2017, I watched some fine televison in your year, and I hope to find some just as good in 2018.

Jet Wolf Summarizes Act 39
The manga and I kind of hate each other. This is unfortunate, but still, I’m determined to come out of this with something. Rather than spend energy on a liveblog that’s increasingly negative, I’m reading each manga act (mostly) silently, and then writing up summaries at the end. I won’t pull my punches. There’s going to be criticism and snark about the manga, either wholesale or in details. If that isn’t a thing you feel like reading, please skip this post!
On the one hand, when I started this act today, I thought I was still in the Infinity Arc, which was bound and determined to live up to its name. I was not! I am even closer to the conclusion of the manga than I realized!
On the other hand, I’m in the Pegasus arc.
Dear god help me, I’m in the Pegasus arc.
We open with the Inners, but don’t get excited, this will be the last time you’ll see them for the next hundred pages. They’re gathered together at a park to watch the eclipse. Where’s Usagi, you ask? At another park somewhere else with Mamoru and Chibi-Usa, because if they were there, we might feel for a second that Mamoru was not the center of the universe, and can’t possibly risk it. CAN’T MINGLE WITH THE HELP YOU KNOW.
That little girl I posted earlier wishes to become an actress, and Minako whirls around, Kill Bill sirens blaring. "My dream is to become an idol!” she says to her friends for what is almost certainly the tenth time that hour. However this prompts the others to say their dreams (PS: THIS IS THE DREAM ARC) and they are every bit as obvious and lacking in character development as you’ve come to expect.
“I want to be a bride!” Mako says as I cry inside. "And then maybe have a flower shop or cake shop, but mostly bride!”
“I wish to become an elegant doctor!” Ami does not care that I am crying harder. Not brilliant. Not genius. Not lifesaving. ELEGANT. AMI MIZUNO’S PREFERRED ADJECTIVE IS ELEGANT AND I AM ON PAGE TWO OF THIS ACT
As for Rei?
While you will pry International Success Life Rei Hino from me absolutely never because my grip will only become stronger in death, fair enough, but for fuck’s sake, AMI ALREADY SAID ELEGANT REI I REFUSE TO BELIEVE YOUR EGO WOULDN’T DEMAND ANOTHER DESCRIPTOR.
Meanwhile, at No Senshi Allowed Park, Mamoru doubles over with chest pains. FINALLY SOMEONE HAD THE CORRECT DREAM. Unfortunately it passes quickly, just in time for the Dead Moon Circus to arrive on their fucking giant flying stingray shark pirate ship what the fuck??
THINGS ONLY GET MORE HORRIFYING
Of course if one thing is going to be consistent for me from the anime to the manga, it’d be how much the Dead Moon Circus creeps me the fuck out. OF COURSE THAT.
The Circus disappears then, and I’ll give the manga credit where it’s due here, it doesn’t have thirty fucking installments of no one seeing the bloody ten block giant floating circus tent.
Back to Peon Park, the Senshi also saw the circus arrive, and this apparently freaked Phobos and Deimos out so badly they had to to fly to Rei on her day off and bring her a newspaper and some feathers AND A FUCKING TAROT CARD ARE YOU KIDDING ME THESE GUYS NOT ONLY FOUND REI’S TAROT DECK BUT SORTED THROUGH THE CARDS TO FIND THE EXACT ONE TO BEST COMMUNICATE THEIR MEANING MEANWHILE I CAN’T GET MINA TO BRING ME THE GODDAMN BALL WHEN SHE WANTS ME TO THROW IT
Armed with this information, Rei, my beloved, light of my life, favourite character for over twenty years, concludes
Really, Rei. Really.
The Senshi rush to Usagi, though not one of them wonders why they bother, and that’s the real tragedy in this.
At the other, better park, for characters the author actually cares about, Mamoru thinks traffic will be bad getting home and suggests they wander around the shopping district instead. Hey look, there’s a sale on! This doesn’t seem strange at all!
Nobody thinks to mention the timing of this sale or arrival of an imminent circus alongside THE FLYING SHARK PIRATE CIRCUS SHIP, so maybe I was too quick with my credit-giving a minute ago. They wander around the stalls and shops, until something catches Usagi and Chibs’ eyes.
HMM I WONDER IF THESE WILL BECOME IMPORTANT
They convince Mamoru to buy them at $100 for the pair, which breaks down, in overall kaleidoscopic entertainment value, to about $100 a minute. As Usagi and Chibs rapidly burn through that minute, the Senshi show up, relieved to find everyone okay. “Should we join them?” Ami asks. “God no,” replies Minako, dragging everyone off to do jello shots for the rest of the issue.
God knows how many hours later, it’s 5pm and everything’s still just as packed as it was this morning, making Mamoru’s whole thing about having trouble getting home particularly dense because everyone’s fucking HERE and not on the road. But everything’s about to get a thousand times stupider.
Usagi says that it’s getting late and maybe Chibi-Usa shouldn’t go home until tomorrow. I was busy trying to puzzle out what that meant, like sleep-over in the park? No, no, she means home to the future, to which Mamoru says:
IT’S A THOUSAND YEARS IN THE FUTURE MAMORU THE DAY YOU’RE ON IN 1995 IS COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT TO THE 30TH FUCKING CENTURY WHAT SENSE DOES THIS EVEN MAKE
AND THEN CHIBS JUST MUDDIES IT EVEN FURTHER
HOW DOES
WHAT DOES THAT MATTER WHAT SENSE DOES ANY OF THIS MAKE THIS IS SO NONSENSICAL AND I’M LEGIT IRRITATED ABOUT IT
And then it’s Usagi’s turn to just make shit up as she goes.
SHE WON’T BE LATE IT’LL BE THE SAME FUCKING DAY BECAUSE IT’S A THOUSAND YEARS IN THE FUTURE AND THAT IS INDEPENDENT OF WHAT DAY IT IS IN THE PRESENT TIME IS NOT LINEAR FOR YOU PEOPLE AND YOU KNOW THAT BECAUSE YOU ARE HAVING A CONVERSATION WITH YOUR DAUGHTER FROM THE FUTURE
And I can’t even see why there’s all this bending over backwards trying to explain any of this away when plot coherency is something Takeuchi wrestles with on a daily basis about as much as she does character development.
SPEAKING OF
Cut to Mamoru’s apartment. Chibs is getting ready for bed.
Recognize the mirror?
JUST AS WELL BECAUSE THE MANGA COULDN’T CARE LESS IF YOU DO OR DON’T
FOUR TAGS WITH SQUIGGLY LABELS FOR MAMORU’S SHIT
THE PJS OF WHICH WILL BE MENTIONED IN-TEXT AT LEAST ONCE MORE IN THIS SCENE
FUCK ALL FOR MICHIRU
IT MANAGED TO BE EVEN WORSE THAN “MICHIRU WAS ALSO THERE” BECAUSE YOU CAN’T EVEN KNOW MICHIRU IS ALSO THERE UNLESS YOU ALREADY KNOW IT
WE DIDN’T THINK IT WAS POSSIBLE TO BE MORE DISMISSIVE OF MICHIRU BUT THE MANGA FOUND A WAY
Meanwhile Usagi is lying to Ikuko about sleeping over at Mako’s, and I’d like to think Usagi cleared that with Mako first, but that would’ve required thinking about her, and there’s just no way. The next three hundred pages are basically Mamoru and Chibi-Usa and I’d summarize what happened but I’ve punished myself enough today, and also NOTHING HAPPENED.
Over to the Dark Moon Circus, where we don’t begin with the Trio but with the Quartet.
Not that I expect anyone to have any personality. And just as well! Here’s a sample.
PALLAPALLA HATES BORING INTERCHANGEABLE DIALOGUE
Chibi-Usa has finally fallen sleep. I know what this means. I feel my mind, my soul, my very sense of self trying to shrink away, but to no avail. It comes.
AAAAHHHH
AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
For relief, please join me in imagining for a moment a Sailor Moon SuperS revival featuring, as Pegasus, BoJack Horseman.
Pegasus and Chibs fly over Tokyo and then he gives her a little bell so she can summon him whenever she wants. In return?
CHIBI-USA TSUKINO I KNOW YOU READ A LOT DO NOT TELL ME THAT YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THIS IN ENOUGH STORIES AND FAIRY TALES TO WANT TO GET THE FUCK OUT OF THIS IMMEDIATELY YOU ARE SMARTER THAN THAT YOUNG LADY THIS IS HANSEL AND GRETEL WITH WINGS
The next morning, Usagi and Mamoru wake up and realize they were both dreaming about Chibi-Usa and her new horse friend. Nothing about this alarms them anywhere near the correct degree in this humble Jet Wolf’s opinion. Mamoru has another partial heart attack but again does not die because I never get what I want. They realize Chibs left without them, and if I were Chibs, I’d do the same.
In the park (probably The Creator Loves Us And Only Us National Park), Chibs digs in her pockets for her Time Key, and I know Chibi-Usa is concerned about wanting to be an adult and all, but she has literally never been more hashtag relatable.
She pulls it out, but also pulls out the bell. GASP IT’S REAL. She thinks about Pegasus and how creepy he is and how she should never talk to him again and then she shatters the bell on the pavement. IF ONLY. She also thinks about her mother, specifically how she said “Leave and don’t come back until you’re pretty and useful.” YOU THINK I’M KIDDING I AM NOT KIDDING
Chibs’ first action as queen? ABOLISH MOTHER’S DAY
She wonders if she’s okay to go home yet, but when she uses the Time Key, it rejects the shit out of her, so guess not. Mamoru and Usagi run up and Pegasus appears again for no particular reason that I can figure out. Then there’s a tiger attack (NO REALLY) and everyone runs off, except for Mamoru, who once again is taunting me with his imminent death that never comes.
Usagi and Chibs try to transform, but can’t, because they don’t have all the Senshi around to power them up. “God, what a stupid requirement anyway, like I ever see those guys,” says Usagi, and so she just makes a new transformation happen because that is a thing she can do.
The Quartet are behind this attack, and Usagi and Chibs try to fight them, but are apparently powerless without a new toy from Bandai, so it’s marketing to the rescue! Chibs calls for Pegasus and begs him for a new weapon. He complies!
AND I FUCKING SCREAMED. While Usagi and Chibs power up on their own -- which I actually thought was a better turn from the anime for a second -- all it functionally did was change their outfits. They don’t even try to fight or attack, I presume because they know they can’t, so while they look neat, they’re powerless and helpless until they beg Pegasus for help. Until Pegasus arrives to give them power.
Power that came to them BY WAY OF MAMORU ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW
So one of my biggest sources of anger and frustration with SuperS? ACTUALLY IMPROVED ON THE MANGA.
Also the Moon Gorgeous Sex Toy is sentient and can talk so. Yeah.
Back at the Dead Moon Circus, Zircon is all “The people of the White Moon reincarnated, god I fucking hate that,” so the Quartet respond by turning their tiger, hawk, and fish into, you guessed it.
They also see Chibs and Usagi and wonder what their dreams are.
APPARENTLY THE ANSWER IS ONE OF THE WORST EPISODES OF THE WORST SEASON OF THE ANIME JESUS WEPT WHEN WILL I KNOW REST
