"I had to fight to be myself and to be respected. I'm proud to say I'm a lesbian. I don't talk about it too much, but I don't deny it. I've had to confront society and the Church, which says that homosexuals are condemned. It's absurd! How can they judge someone who was born that way? I didn't learn to be a lesbian, nobody taught me to be the way I am. I was born this way. I've never slept with a man. I've never slept with a man. Yes, I'm a virgin and I'm not ashamed. My Gods made me this way"
- Chavela Vargas
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8b3082807c94963ff918e9f4df3213d5/a33929ec6cc961c3-47/s540x810/737301cdb9092dc2b7574109797c81803a6c87fa.jpg)
Chavela Vargas (María Isabel Anita Carmen de Jesús Vargas Lizano) was a Mexican singer of Costa Rican origin, born in 1919 in Costa Rica and died in 2012 in Mexico.
She is considered a leading figure in ranchera music, which she sang with strength and emotion. Her voice, rough and warm at the same time, served her theatrical, passionate and human interpretations of standards from the traditional Mexican repertoire.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/c519d3b14445238387709ca9cc00ce72/a33929ec6cc961c3-03/s540x810/4fb332c295689ec948c9569ffbaef57d4a6bca61.jpg)
"And since I have to say it almost everywhere, I'll say it: my parents didn't want me. I suffered for it".
She has an extremely difficult and conflicted relationship with her family, who do not accept her in any way. As a teenager, she left her country and her family for Mexico. The young woman rejected and criticised the ultra-conservative society in which she lives. Once in Mexico, she began singing in the streets.
In the 1940s, she became friends with the painters Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, staying with them for a while and becoming Frida Kahlo's lover.

At the age of 30, she was noticed on Mexico City's Avenida Insurgentes by the composer and famous rancheras singer José Alfredo Jiménez, who became the author of her main hits. With his help, she performed in the cabarets of Mexico City in the mid-1950s before embarking on the road to success in Acapulco, an international tourist destination, where she sang at one of Elizabeth Taylor's weddings.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/745cd45800e1e06eb7462b87c29fb973/a33929ec6cc961c3-35/s540x810/b96a49bc911ecacccd03d75541c2ae3357394f74.jpg)
Chavela Vargas rose to fame in the 1960s and 1970s, touring the world. She became a well-known figure in ranchera song, to which she gave a new lease of life.
Dressed like a man, smoking and drinking like a man, carrying a pistol, "the lady with the red poncho, silver hair and brown flesh" as the Spanish singer Joaquín Sabina described her, is characterised by her red sarape.
In a television interview in 2000, she came out as a homosexual woman. This is where the text at the beginning of the post is from!
Chavela's career reached its peak from the recording of her first album (Noche de Bohemia) in 1961 until the end of the 1970s. This was followed by a long period of fifteen years, during which the singer, suffering from a heavy addiction to alcohol, interrupted her musical career, which she did not resume until 1991.
Encouraged by her friend, the director Pedro Almodóvar, who compared her to Édith Piaf, Chavela embarked on a world tour, performing at the Olympia in Paris and Carnegie Hall in New York. Among her most outstanding performances was Tú me acostumbraste by Frank Domínguez in Pedro Almodóvar's film Babel. Being a close friend of Pedro, she has appeared in several of his films, including The Flower of My Secret.
Following a final concert in Madrid on 10 July 2012 to present her album (La Luna Grande), she was hospitalised in the Spanish capital with serious respiratory problems. She died on 5 August 2012, aged 93.
I am sure you know at least one of her song, La Llorona !
In any case, Chavela was an immense artist who had a profound impact on music, and I'm delighted to have discovered her, or rather re-discovered her. I listened to some of her songs and they're amazing if you like that kind of music ! And please look her up yourself, she was such an interesting person, I couldn't talk about everything in this post or it would have been too long !

What if the Reader in Professor!Viktor also did college musicals? Like she's doing a really racy number while Viktor is in the audience white-knuckling his cane.
Ahhhh college musicals, my teenage passion...
Don't get me wrong I've always been and shall always be a fan of musicals (*cough* Epic *cough*) but I LOVED watching college produced musicals when I was a teenager. Starkid were my actual idols lmao
I was wondering what number would drive Vik insane and the answer popped up in my head almost instantly : Bring on the Men from Jekyll and Hyde The Musical (1990).
youtube
Seriously, this song goes HARD with the sex appeal. If the person I'm into goes on a stage to sing this in one of those little corseted outfits I would actually collapse

Vik would stand absolutely NO chance
There's actually a really nice ongoing Viktor fic on AO3 called "Dreams in Bohemia are not in black and white" (the author is named Halkeginia but I'm not sure if they have a tumblr) where the reader is a 1920s cabaret performer. Definitely check it out !!

Jason was not there for books. He was there for answers and you seemed suspiciously willing to answer. Or maybe that was the paranoia. You hadn't invited him in with eager arms but rather stepped aside and offered to chat over tea.
The bookshop is remarkably ordinary and yet mildly unnerving. Perhaps that's just Jason though, he finds himself, against all reason and judgement sitting across from you. The back of the shop is piled high with boxes and old furniture, a space in the centre cleared for a tea table and accompanying chairs. He stared at the tea in front of him mildly flabbergasted.
"Do you need sugar?"
"No." He croaked.
You nodded sagely, "honey then," and a jar of the stuff was placed on the table before him. He was fairly certain he had never seen honey of that nature before, even if he couldn't explain why. There was no brand label on the mason jar and the honey was rich and golden and yet all the same there was something just a little wrong about it.
Yet he found himself adding it to the tea, a choice that turned out to be a good one.
"What are you doing here?" He finally managed to say, "and how come I couldn't enter before?" The words tumbled out in an embarrassing manner.
"Drinking tea and I have wards up." You shrugged gesturing to your scars, "some use sigils to enhance and in turn others use sigils to guard. I removed them so you could enter."
"Oh, uh, right." Jason took another sip of tea, the honey soothed the frog caught in his throat and he found his voice easier this time. "I didn't mean like right now it's just this isn't exactly the location for a bookshop, I meant what are you doing here as in Gotham. You have to understand how suspicious it is to just appear like this here of all places right?"
You stared at him blankly. Before speaking, "Gotham?"
"Gotham City?" Jason tried, feeling a tad foolish and hoping he didn't come off as mocking.
You paused, contemplated, drank some tea and then shrugged. "Is that the name of this place then?"
Jason looked at you, trying to keep his focus on your eyes and not the curved scars of what he was sure now was some sort of sigil. "Okay, let's try this a different way, where are you from?" He tried again, the absurdity of this situation knocking around his brain as it seemed to eat away at any of his competence.
"Europa, if you want specifics my family is from Bohemia but I've lived in Rondon for the past few years until semi recently due to well... circumstance." You did not elaborate on circumstance but rather said it in a manner that made Jason sure he should know what you were referring to. It was common sense, everyone knew by now, and yet the knowledge eluded him entirely. You had said words and they had meanings he was sure of that much, he just had no idea what those meanings were.
It was Jason's turn to stare. "You mean Europe?"
"No? I mean Europa." There was a confusion then in your tone, the sort found over mispronunciation or a poorly spelled text. "I should assume then this is not said continent but—"
"It's not." Jason said, blunt and a little rude but he was nearing the point of frustration. Frustrated at the state of conversation and how it seemed to be halted so soon after speaking, at the lack of answers, at just, the everything about it all. And despite that he took a deep breath and drank some more tea, and waited for you to speak again.
"Then which is it?"
"America." He said, genuinely and utterly flabbergasted. He knew full well that answer was only partially correct but the technicalities seemed to be lagging in the back of his brain in his attempt to comprehend the conversation at hand. There was a part of him that was positive this was a very very elaborate prank. Or perhaps a scheme to get him unmasked. Even if he didn't particularly hold his secret identity in the sanctity as he once did it was still the principle of the matter.
Yet you were staring at him as if he had suddenly burst into song. Something genuine and serious in your expression.
"What the fuck is America."
crow's note: this is a series now, or a mini series? when I've finished I'll probably compile it into one thing on ao3. also i've decided to refer to the reader in this series as "sigils" so if asked about them in the third person I will address them like such however within the actual story they will remain nameless and exclusively referred to with gender neutral pronouns.

Feels incredibly virtue-signaling to post your favorite songs right at the end of the year, but in truth I have mostly been sick and busy with work (not such a fun lifestyle) and did not listen to new music all that much (definitely not a serious way to live), so it's a statement of necessity if anything. Anyway, here is what I liked this year…

asteroid Sejong (7365) conjunct my sun (1 orb)
this asteroid is named after King Sejong the great,
His greatest achievement was creating Hangul, the Korean alphabet, but his patronage of science, technology, literature, and medicine all had a large impact on Korea and Koreans. King Sejong is known as one of the greatest rulers of Korea of all time, as he created Hangul (Korean alphabet), encouraged significant scientific advancements, reinforced Confucianism in Korea, and caused many political and social advancements. Sejong, (born 1397—died 1450), monarch of the Chosŏn (Yi) dynasty during his reign (1419–50) cultural achievements in Korea reached their highest point.
asteroid hatshepsut (2436) conjunct my sun (1 orb)
This asteroid is named after the female pharaoh Hatshepsut. Considered one of Egypt's greatest female pharaoh brought great wealth and artistry to her land. She sponsored one of Egypt's most successful trading expeditions, bringing back gold, ebony, and incense from a place called Punt (probably modern-day Eritrea, a country in Africa).

asteroid Zoser (4907) conjunct my sun (2 orb)
This asteroid is named after the pharaoh Djoser. Djoser, also spelled Zoser, second king of the 3rd dynasty (c. 2650–c. 2575 bce) of ancient Egypt, who undertook the construction of the earliest important stone building in Egypt. His reign, which probably lasted 19 years, was marked by great technological innovation in the use of stone architecture. King Djoser's architect, Imhotep, built the first pyramid by placing six mastabas, each smaller than the one beneath, in a stack to form a pyramid rising in steps.

Advent Calender #5: Alle meine Boyfriends sind tot
All good things come to an end. This little poison cabinet advent calendar (and we hope we'll be able to contribute a little something to @franzliszt-official 's calendar ;)), as well as our Horus cycle.
And yes, the ‘Gothic Tina Belchers’ (thanks for that, guys!) have decided not to put the title track ‘Alle meine Boyfriends sind tot’ on tomorrow's album of the same name. Our 2 ½ hardcore listeners may forgive us.
Why? Because we are sure that nobody could follow us mentally anymore. I mean:
Do you remember that we got this time machine from the professor and instead of saving the world, we did the young Franz Liszt? Then we locked him and all the other Horus donors in our cellar to sew them all into the perfect man? Then there was this story about the rendezvous with this guy who liked @chopinski-official but couldn't get his head round the fact that the real Chopin was already sitting in our house gagged, without his hands. (There's actually a song in between in which I tell my Polish grandma that we have Chopin in the cellar, but she thinks it's stupid because artists couldn't feed a family. It'll be on the next album). And then we made a film evening with the Horus with Frankenstein and Lilo and Stitch, then he had an existential crisis while we just wanted to do dirty stuff. After that he mutated into the Beach Horus, who was only interested in lower-class crap. Then he built himself a perfect second wife out of dumb models and then, unfortunately, we had to get rid of him. And this song is just about how we go down to the basement after disposing of Horus and all our Horus donors are comforted, even though they're missing so many body parts, but we all love each other anyway.... and then we all move upstairs and practice polygamy. (They'll get their limbs back, though, I promise. Franz without a face, c'mon.) The mistake, by the way, was to take something from Byron. We'll have to do it differently for the next Horus.
Apart from the fact that we desperately need therapy, it's a concept that's rather...unwieldy?...you know. So, tomorrow on the album you'll get Horus III (Beach-Horus) and today Horus IV. ;) And, guys, just the fact that there are real people out there who listen to songs like this makes us love you all even more. <3
I look down into the cellar to cry There it sits, my Horus starter pack They ask me What happened? I dumped my Horus I knew it, says Kafka quietly Then I guess he wasn't so keen after all Chopin hugs me with his stumps Well, they don't let themselves go with pity All my boyfriends are dead Well almost They are the saviours in my time of need No one can hold a candle to them All others must give way to them I prophesied it, says Novalis He's really not sorry for anything without a heart Will I get my bum back now? Rossetti asks, half bent over I look at Liszt, without a face He'd be prettier with it, I think Rasputin shouts all the time something in Russian, I don't feel sorry for him All my boyfriends are dead Well, almost They're the saviours in my time of need No one can hold a candle to them All others must give way to them Blind Byron leans back Says you've got your luck here One being out of all of us is really too much How exhausting, such rubbish Why don't we all live upstairs And can try out polygamy? We're all hot in our own way And apart from Rasputin, we're all quiet And Schiller can't do anything anyway He just runs around like a headless chicken It would just be nice if Liszt could get his face back It's really not mundane without it And then we'll all move in with you There's bohemia and there's red wine And I hug them, they're right Our love, it's still real But on the inside I take out a tape measure And figure out my next Horus

Why is the song called "Bohemian Rhapsody"?
Why does it last exactly 5 minutes and 55 seconds?
What is this song really about?
Why was the Queen movie released on October 31st?
The movie was released on October 31st because the single was first heard on October 31, 1975. The song is titled "Bohemian Rhapsody" because a "Rhapsody" is a free-form musical composition, composed of several seemingly unrelated parts and themes. The word "rhapsody" comes from Greek and means "assembled parts of a song." The word "bohemian" refers to a region in the Czech Republic called Bohemia, the birthplace of Faust, the protagonist of Goethe's work. In Goethe's work, Faust is an elderly, highly intelligent man who knows everything except the mystery of life. Not understanding it, he decides to poison himself.
Just at that moment, church bells ring, and he goes out. Upon his return, he encounters a dog that transforms into a sort of man: it is the devil Mephistopheles, who promises him a full life in exchange for his soul. Faust agrees, becomes young again, and becomes arrogant. He meets Gretchen, and they have a child, but his wife and child die. Faust travels through time and space, feeling powerful, but as he ages again, he feels unhappy once more. Not having broken the pact with the devil, angels contend for his soul. This work is fundamental to understanding "Bohemian Rhapsody."
The song talks about Freddie Mercury himself. Being a rhapsody, there are 7 different parts:
First and second act: A Cappella
Third act: Ballad
Fourth act: Guitar Solo
Fifth act: Opera
Sixth act: Rock
Seventh act: "Coda" or final act
The song tells the story of a poor boy wondering if this life is real or just his distorted imagination. He says that even if he stopped living, the wind would continue to blow without his existence. So he makes a pact with the devil and sells his soul. After making this decision, he rushes to tell his mother, saying: "Mama, I just killed a man, put a gun against his head, pulled the trigger, now he's dead. I threw my life away. If I don't come back tomorrow, continue as if nothing matters..." The man he kills is himself, Freddie Mercury.
If he doesn't honor the pact with the devil, he will die immediately. He bids farewell to his loved ones, and his mother bursts into tears, tears reflected in Brian May's guitar notes. Freddie, frightened, shouts, "Mama, I don't want to die," and the operatic part begins. Freddie finds himself on an astral plane where he sees himself: "I see a little silhouette of a man" and asks, "Scaramouche, will you do the fandango?" Scaramouche is a small skirmish between armies on horseback (the 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse of evil fight against the forces of good for Freddie's soul) and continues by saying, "Thunderbolts and lightning, very, very frightening me." This phrase appears in the Bible, specifically in Job 37: "The thunder and lightning frighten me: my heart pounds within my chest." His mother, seeing him so scared by his decision, pleads for his salvation from the pact with Mephistopheles. "He's just a poor boy... Spare him his life from this monstrosity. Easy come, easy go, will you let him go?" Her pleas are heard, and angels descend to fight against the forces of evil. "Bismillah" (an Arabic word meaning "In the name of God") is the first word that appears in the Quran, the holy book of Muslims. So God himself appears and shouts, "We will not let you go, let him go."
Faced with such a confrontation between the forces of good and evil, Freddie fears for his mother's life and says, "Mama mia, mama mia, let me go." From the sky, they shout again that they will not abandon him, and Freddie shouts, "no, no, no, no, no," saying, "Beelzebub (the Lord of the Darkness) has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me." Freddie pays homage to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Sebastian Bach when he sings "Figaro, Magnifico" referring to Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and Bach's "Magnificat." The operatic part ends, and the rock part begins. The devil, furious and betrayed by Freddie for not honoring the pact, says, "So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye? So you think you can love me and leave me to die?" It is striking how the lord of evil feels powerless before a human being, faced with repentance and love. Having lost the battle, the devil leaves, and we come to the last act or "coda," where Freddie is free, and that feeling comforts him. The gong sounds, closing the song. The gong is an instrument used in China and the Far East to cure people under the influence of evil spirits.
The song lasts 5 minutes and 55 seconds. Freddie liked astrology, and 555 in numerology is associated with death, not physical, but spiritual, the end of something where angels will protect you. The 555 is related to God and the divine, an end that will give rise to a new phase. The song was first heard on the eve of All Saints' Day. A holiday called "Samhain" by the Celts to celebrate the transition and opening to the other world. The Celts believed that the world of the living and the dead were almost united, and on the Day of the Dead, both worlds united, allowing spirits to transit to the other side. Nothing in "Bohemian Rhapsody" is random. Everything is very measured, worked, and has a meaning beyond being just a simple song. It was voted worldwide as the best song of all time. This theme represented a radical change for Queen, as if they had indeed made a pact with the devil; it changed their lives forever and made them immortal.
