Butenko Pinxit
Bohdan Butenko, signing his pictures "Butenko Pinxit", made many children think THIS was his name.
Considering his illustrations were everywhere, from early reading magazine "Świerszczyk" to poem books to collage comic strips, he definitely left an impression on Polish children of a certain era.
His drawings may seem simplistic...
Tumblr media
But he was a master of humor. Here is his "Self-portrait":
Tumblr media
(the arrow says "This one, thirtieth from the left")
However what most probably remember the best are his combinations of text and pictures. Entire pages of hand-transcribed poems of Jan Brzechwa, with relevant pictures added:
Tumblr media
(poem about a snail, obviously :))
He was a student of Jan Marcin Szancer (see here) but has created a style entirely of his own. Even though they have covered the same authors - Szancer has also illustrated some of Brzechwa's poems.
In fact, a child's bookcase can be considered lacking if it doesn't contain one of each.
He also designed entire books, with their unusual layout and typography playing into the storytelling:
(Ciril, Where Are You?, Wiktor Woroszylski)

And then there was the Dong who had a luminous nose, and Jumblies and other creatures by Mr Lear.

Grabiański, Malczewski for the ask game?
Grabiński: There's just so many to choose from... I was lucky enough to inherit a copy of Andersen's fairytales illustrated by Jan Marcin Szancer and his art was probably the only reason I made it trough most of these stories. There is this one drawing for The Old Street Lamp that I'd just love to have on my wall... Also, I'm a life-long fan of Bohdan Butenko. The man could make any topic fun.
Malczewski: Not specifically, but it was generally agreed upon at uni that I've got a Late Gothic/Northern Renaissance look, especially if I wrap something around my head. And I would gladly wander through one of those early landscapes in the background of Jan van Eyck's or Rogier van der Weyden's paintings.
@tauremornalome Dzięki za ten pomysł, jest genialny!

Książkę robi się jak sweter
Książkę robi się jak sweter
Bohdan Butenko to potrafił robić książki!

Would you mind recommending me some semi-difficult polish literature? Jestem Polką ale mieszkam za granicą od dzieciństwa to większości polskiego zapomniałam, but I’d love to speak fluently again. Thanks
I would recommend John Green books in Polish - they are funny, quite easy to understand. There are colloquial words, but not so many of them - let’s face it, you have to learn a spoken language, because on a daily basis most Polish people don’t bother to use an official version of their native language.
One of the most popular Polish book series for teenagers is Jeżycjada by Małgorzata Musierowicz. The books shows a normal (I mean… okay, “typical”) life of a random Polish family from a city Poznań. The series has many fans, because it shows different aspects of life in various ways, there are sad moments, but also funny ones. Start with Szósta klepka.
It’s better not to start with such writers as Mickiewicz, Słowacki, Gombrowicz or (tfu!) Sienkiewicz. But if you want to read something short, I would recommend Bolesław Prus’ stories - Kamizelka and Katarynka. I still remember the ending of Kamizelka - it was so moving. Prus could create such magnificent atmosphere from normal, everyday things - no wonder he is one of the most popular Polish writers. Even school students like his works, which is quite an achievement.
You can also try Polish fantasy books - Wiedźmin by Andrzej Sapkowski, Kłamca by Jakub Ćwiek, Bajki robotów by Stanisław Lem, a series Kroniki Jakuba Wędrowycza by Andrzej Pilipiuk (not sure about this one, it can be a little bit to difficult - but it’s still worth a try). We’ve got other writers, but, c’mon, little people understand Jacek Dukaj’s literature…
Books of Katarzyna Puzyńska are very popular right now in Poland. She’s a crime fiction writer, she gained popularity thanks to Saga o Lipowie - start with a book called Motylek.
If you’re a fan of comics, you should check out Gapiszon by Bohdan Butenko, Tytus, Romek i Atomek by Papcio Chmiel (his real name is Henryk Chmielewski, but nobody uses it - his comics are more than iconic, you’re obliged to read it!), Kajko i Kokosz by Janusz Christa (ICONIC!), Wiedźmin and Ekspedycja by Bogusław Polch.
If you like poems, you should try Wisława Szymborska - her poems seem to be ordinary, but at the same time - moving and thought-provoking. Since their poems focus on a daily life, you will have little problems to understand them from a linguistic point of view.

Animals of Janusz Grabiański
Born in 1929, a contemporary and uni classmate of Bohdan Butenko.
His illustrations were bought by publishers all over the world, for their watercolour grace, the graceful animals, whimsical children and wonderful colours.
Puss in Boots:

The Wonderful Adventures of Nils:
Tumblr media
He also designed post stamps, and he definitely loved cats:
Tumblr media
(there is also a dog set)
This lovely book cover is so TYPICAL for his style:
Tumblr media
(anyone has this book?)
At the same time, he designed visual identification and promotional material for LOT Polish Airlines.
So, not only animals.
Well...
Tumblr media
His style is very distinctive and has impacted many, many children, shaping their imagination and filling dreams with wispy, fluffy kittens.
