Last night: Got to see Bob Mould and band at the Wonder Ballroom. Great show! Interesting âelectricâ version of âSinners and their Repentancesâ. So hot and humid from the people, the ceiling was dripping. #bobmould #bobmouldband #bobmouldmusic (at Wonder Ballroom) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv8E87il76J/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=92nzv1xh8q11

The Bob Mould Band Blasts Through 40 Years of Musical History at LAâs Teragram Ballroom
Bob Mould occupies a unique space in popular musicâs broader landscape.
On one hand, heâs a Punk Icon.
Co-helming Husker Du, with the late Grant Hart (RIP), he helped define American Hardcore. And with Huskerâs later work, he was also instrumental in opening the for the early â90s alt-rock explosion.
But stepping beyond his punk beginnings, Bob managed to make his mark in the alt-rock arena, too. Ever charging forward, Bob introduced himself to a new generation with his first couple of solo LPs and his early â90s alt-rock band, Sugar. Mould, already a âcritics darling,â gained the same recognition as a solo artist, and as Sugarâs frontman and ringleader.Â
His latter effort scoring Sugar positioning on the âmodern rockâ charts and radio airplay on the burgeoning alt-rock genre driven radio stations (now largely a forgotten relic of the â90s). Not to mention some screen time on MTV (back when they still played videos) courtesy of their Buzz Bin feature and the weekly 120 Minutes alt-rock showcase program.
Wading into a new Millennium back on his solo trip, Mould explored a variety of genres post-Sugar. Albeit with varying degrees of success. But never waning, Bob has continued to âremain in the game.â Crafting vibrant records and mounting successful tours for more than four decades.Â
Ultimately, Mould has achieve âElder Statesmenâ status. No small feat in the notoriously fickle and forgetful rock world. A position few of his musical contemporaries can equally claim.Â
Of late, most of this decade anyway, Bob has held fast with his current concoction -- the Bob Mould Band. And with this entity, heâs appears to have found a duo of capable cohorts in bassist Jason Narducy + Drummer Jon Wurster.
Narducy + Wurster also happen to be the touring rhythm section of another famed punk-turned-alt-rock outfit, Superchunk.
But wherever the chemistry was born with their prior paring, Jason + Jon have proven the PERFECT compliment to Bobâs potent sonic palette.
And this inalienable fact was on clear display last Friday night at Downtown Los Angelesâ Teragram Ballroom.
Roaring (quite literally) through a 90+ minute set, Bob and the boys turned in a harrowing performance that spanned Mr. Mouldâs entire career.
Narducy + Wurster also happen to be the touring rhythm section of another famed punk-turned-alt-rock outfit, Superchunk.
Selections included... Husker Du classics I Apologize, Flip Your Wig, New Day Rising, and Iâm Never Talking to You Again.
Sugar faves Standing on The Edge of The Hoover Dam, Good Idea, and If I Canât Change Your Mind
And early solo material with Workbookâs Shine a Little Light and Black Sheets of Rainâs Stand Guard.
Along with a fist full of later solo + Bob Mould Band joints, which I (sadly) canât name because I havenât kept up this this aspect of his career.
But of regardless of the material (and I was beyond thrilled to hear Husker Du tunes live for the first time ever), the show was BARN BURNER!
Despite Bobâs â10th grade geometry teacherâ attire -- he was clad in a flannel shirt, buttoned all the way up + tucked in, athletic trainers/hiking boots, and topped with ever-fogged up eyeglasses -- the man has not lost a step.Â
He skipped to-and-fro across the stage, a gesture reminiscent of his hardcore roots, with a broad grin shining ear-to-ear throughout the entire performance. All the while blasting searing riffs and howling like a banshee in that trademark Bob Mould wail.Â
In short, it was a phenomenal show and an amazing night.
If Bob and Co happen to be appearing at a rock joint near you, I STRONGLY encourage you to make the effort to catch the show. Itâs a live spectacle you absolutely do not want to miss!
Meanwhile, Narducy + Wurster expertly matched him, in energy + execution, lick for glorious lick.Â

Bob Mould Band Drops Another Single: Forecast Rain
youtube
Coronavirus be damned! Bob Mould keeps chugging ahead with new music...
Who knows when any act may mount a tour, let alone play a legit live show? But Alt-Rock hero, Bob Mould, remains undeterred.
Mould, and his current supporting cast, aptly known as the Bob Mould Band (comprised of Superchunck drummer, Jon Wurster, and Superchunk touring bassist, Jason Narducy,) have a new album schedule for release this fall: Blue Hearts.
And to promo the forthcoming album, Bob just released another single from the record, entitled Forecast Rain.
Not quite as biting musically as American Crisis, the first Blue Hearts single, released earlier this summer, Forecast Rain presents more in the vein of former Mould band Sugar's Hoover Dam.Â
But the track is every bit as potent lyrically. The tune has Mould lamenting a coming flood, bloated by our societyâs grievous and growing ills, which threatens to wash us all away.
Prophetic words for a wise Mr. Mould? Sadly, Bob is likely all too close to hitting the bullseye.
But regardless of the âstate of thingsâ (which we can all agree is currently downright terrible on nearly every front), itâs heartening to see Bob not only making new music, but crafting material of such high caliber.Â
And so soon after his last outing, Sunshine Rock, released in February of 2019. Prior to Sunshine, Bob hadnât been in the studio for nearly three years, dating back to Patch The Sky, released in 2016.
A dearth of touring opportunities many have prompted the workaholic Mould back into recording mode. But itâs certainly, if the these two singles are good indicators, promises to be a worthwhile âearly return.â
And itâs just plain exciting to see (and hear) the inimitable Mould minting fantastic sounding new Rock âN Roll!
Keep an eye peeled for Blue Hearts release, slated for September 25, 2020 from major indie, Merge Records.
