Storyboard I made for the stop-motion short film ‘La folle aventure de Bobeh’, which I am working on with 3 other classmates.

A rare photograph taken in the Podolia region of Ukraine during the An-Sky expeditions just before the First World War shows a midwife with her “grand-children” but tells only part of the woman’s story. Its caption states:

The models for midwives are the biblical Shiprah and Puah, who refused to fulfill the cruel order of the Pharoh. Therefore, God “made them houses.” (Exodus 1:15-21) In the folkloric tradition of Eastern European Jews, individuals kept life long ties with the midwife who delivered them and were considered her “grandchildren.” The more “grandchildren” the midwife had, the larger was her share of the world to come.

It’s fascinating to read that these humble women were part of a child’s world for their entire lives:

The child will stand in a special relationship to the woman who attends his mother at his birth. He pays her visits and she participated in all the festivals and celebrations of his life. He gives her gifts especially when he is married and he mourns at her funeral. She calls the children she delivers her “babies” and she in turn is known to all the community as “granny,” [or] di Bobeh.

Regardless of the midwife’s low social status, it’s clear Ashkenazim had a deep appreciation for these women healers and the crucial role they played in the communities of the Pale

Work in progress: the doll I am making for my stop-motion film ‘La folle aventure de Bobeh’. I was the only one of my teammates that made it to class (thanks RATP), so I worked on the doll alone, based off the design we had come up with together.
