i watched animal today. it made me feel gross, fascinated, and intrigued. if my parents where more okay with me watching rated R movies with them i could have a fun time. but they are very anal about that matter.

the movie overall was not as good as i thought it would be. the technical work was fine and even amazing in parts. the story telling and the cuts were good too. ranbir put his years worth of acting in this one film and did an amazing job. but the story itself felt too edgy. the scenes where bobby deol is being a misogynist, or the scene in which vijay hurts his wife by pulling on her bra strap was so unnecessary. but then again i appreciate the director putting out his inner demons in the screen. its obvious he wanted to make such an unhinged character and story. the movie does okay on its humor and i think that its misunderstood by alot of of the common audience as a relatable movie. the movie stays true to its title for being animalistic, and people expecting something better then this is funny. but that being said, there is so many scenes that could be cut out. it literally didnt need to be 3 and a half hours long despite it not feeling that way. as much as i love rashmika (she is literally my icon) i think this needed a different character, the time skips feel weird bc rabir kapoors character feels properly aged/deaged while rashmika is kinda the same even after 8 years and two children later. typically for indian movies i wouldnt care this much in terms of technical work but vanga proved that hes great in the technical work. its always the plots that lack depth minus ur main character(s).

its surprising because this movie feels filthy but not for the reasons of sex, but rather the dialogue and the random bits it has to invoke some audience reaction. like there was a genuine scene where rashmika gets mad at ranbir smoking cigarettes and instead of developing their conflict they just threaten to slap eo and then listen to an audio of them fucking and everything is normal. i cant tell if vanga chose to make such an unhinged character so he can have him do everything that a normal character would never do, to justify his weird hate boner

The Bala song is catchy, which we already knew, and the Bhoot Raja song is actually kinda entertaining too (the lyrics of the qawwali, on the other hand, are very weird). The music isn't up to that of Housefull, and is probably about even with Housefull 3 (Pyaar Ki; Tang Uthake), but definitely surpasses that of Housefull 2. ... Of course, no one is watching these movies for soul-moving musical numbers or excellent dance steps.

The jokes are funny and effective, I think, because they don't run into the issue of being overdone (as opposed to Housefull 3). I love the Bollywood name dropping (Alia Bhatt & Mahesh Bhatt, for example, during Nawazuddin's song/special appearance), and the few 'in the past' bits of "there should be a song with those lines" is a fun call-back (call-forward?) to popular songs. And that albeit brief recall of the previous Housefull movies, with Akshay's explaining "his wife isn't his wife...", which remains funny. And Riteish remembering his past in that song was pretty entertaining; Bobby's memory coming back during the fight was less funny, but still fun.

The series going to reincarnation was something I was a bit uncertain about, largely because - and I've said this before - things usually always go the same in these types of movies (the brilliant, or at least different, Ek Paheli Leela twist aside), and throwing that into a straight-up comedy always has a chance to get dicey (for example, Johnny Lever's mid-movie transformation to the character that was, apparently, played by his daughter; although, the "remix" versions of the songs he sings are entertaining). But luckily, for the most part, the emphasis remains on the comedy between the 3 brothers and doesn't get too serious. And the Nawazzudin bit adds to that.

Qawwali lyrics aside, that bit at the table where he wants them to sing 'ga ma' and then 'ga ma ma re ga' is absolutely hilarious. The bit with the pigeons is fun too. And Akshay's memory thing is funny, but the googly eyes are a bit weird, in a very unsettling way.

The only thing I don't get is, and this is true about all these reincarnation movies, why are we 600 years out and the bad guy is still, once again, like "I'll kill you all." Like, it was 600 years and at least 1 reincarnation ago - why are you still trying to kill these people; and, to that extent, what sort of logic is "I loved a girl that looked like you last time, so it has to be us again this time?" - like, what if they reincarnated with different faces this time around (again, Ek Paheli Leela-style, but like with Pooja looking like Kriti1, and Kriti1 looking like Kriti2). I'm just saying - I don't think "I need to marry someone who looks like the person I was going to marry in my last lifetime" is a great strategy - people change, mindsets change, faces change. ... But hey: comedy.

It's also completely random (welcome to my brain), but Kriti Sanon also had a reincarnation movie in Raabta (that time, I think she was the one who remembered), and Pooja previously starred in the 'set in the past' Mohenjo Daro, so that's some pointless coincidences. The last 3 movies have also had John Abraham, Abhishek Bachchan, and now Bobby Deol - aka, the lead heroes of Dostana, albeit in very different roles. ... Okay, now it's 12:30am and my brain is just hunting for randomness like this. I guess it's bed time.

The movie isn't all that bad, really. It's definitely got some funny moments, and Bala gets more catchy every time you hear it.
