Jail Blazers - Eggers Kerry
Jail Blazers How the Portland Trail Blazers Became the Bad Boys of Basketball Eggers Kerry Genre: Basketball Price: $17.99 Publish Date: November 20, 2018 Publisher: Sports Publishing Seller: SIMON AND SCHUSTER DIGITAL SALES INC In the late ’90s and early 2000s, the Portland Trail Blazers were one of the hottest teams in the NBA. For almost a decade, they won 60 percent of their games while making it to the Western Conference Finals twice. However, what happened off-court was just as unforgettable as what they did on the court. When someone asked Blazers general manager Bob Whitsitt about his team’s chemistry, he replied that he’d “never studied chemistry in college.” And with that, the “Jail Blazers” were born. Built in a similar fashion to a fantasy team, the team had skills, but their issues ended up being their undoing. In fact, many consider it the darkest period in franchise history. While fans across the country were watching the skills of Damon Stoudamire, Rasheed Wallace, and Zach Randolph, those in Portland couldn’t have been more disappointed in the players’ off-court actions. This, many have mentioned, included a very racial element—which carried over to the players as well. As forward Rasheed Wallace said, “We’re not really going to worry about what the hell [the fans] think about us. They really don’t matter to us. They can boo us every day, but they’re still going to ask for our autographs if they see us on the street. That’s why they’re fans and we’re NBA players.” While people think of the Detroit Pistons of the eighties as the elite “Bad Boys,” the “Jail Blazers” were actually bad. Author Kerry Eggers, who covered the Trail Blazers during this controversial era, goes back to share the stories from the players, coaches, management, and those in Portland when the players were in the headlines as much for their play as for their legal issues. http://bit.ly/2VpdaHW

The Portland Trail Blazers came into the NBA in 1970. The franchise name means "pioneer", in hint to explorers who conquered the West in the nineteenth century. The yet to be years of the franchise were a struggle, but the franchise misused similar to the dawn of version Walton in 1974. In his first season considering the club, the Blazers won 11 more games than the previous season. In 1976-1977, Jack Ramsay, a former ABA coach, took manage of the franchise. The Blazers made their mannerism to the NBA finals, where they faced the huge favorites: Philadelphia Sixers and Julius Erving. isolated seven years after its inception, the club won the championship. best tours in portland The mid-1980s marked a turning reduction in the records of the Blazers, who "missed" two exceptional players. In 1984, the Blazers had the second choice in the draft. They then chose Sam Bowie, a skilled center who was slur prone, rather than an lithe pubescent artiste who had just won the NCAA title bearing in mind the the academy of North Carolina: Michael Jordan. Portland wanted to perpetuate the tradition of the great white pivot (started as soon as relation Walton), and already had Clyde Drexler at the shooting guard position, prearranged a year earlier at the 14th position. Sam Bowie, unfortunately, had an slight plagued career. In 1986, the club chosen Arvydas Sabonis, the smart hub of Lithuania. He united Portland tardy in his career. The club reached the resolution twice in 1990 and 1992, later than the losses next to the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls. The team eventually traded Drexler away to Houston, where he ended going on winning a title. After the Drexler dynasty, Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft as soon as description Gates and one of the richest men in the world came up behind a further strategy for success. following general officer Bob Whitsitt, the club's strategy was to bring to the team as many stars as possible, sometimes at the expense of the collection bargaining agreement. The players that were brought in were Kenny Anderson, Isaiah Rider, Detlef Schrempf, Arvydas Sabonis, Rasheed Wallace, Shawn Kemp, Damon Stoudamire, Scottie Pippen, Brian Grant, Shareef Abdur-Rahim. This strategy brought the Blazers as far-off as to the Conference Finals, losing in 1999 and 2000 to the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers. A side effect of bringing in this intervention of players was that these particular players brought along a lot of off court problems. Some of these players were arrested for a variety of offences from weapons to drugs. This guide to the Trail Blazers achievement the nick proclaim of the Jail Blazers.

This week’s edition of the NBA Trades Podcast went to the origins of the Jail Blazers. This episode features a discussion with Portland Tribune columnist Kerry Eggers about the Portland Trail Blazers from 1999-2004.
The podcast covers Portland’s build to the 59-win 1999-2000 team. This involves the trade of Isaiah Rider and Jim Jackson to the Hawks for Steve Smith as well as the deal to bring Scottie Pippen over from Houston. We spoke about Portland’s run to the NBA Conference Finals in 2000 and the shocking Game Seven against the Lakers that ended their season. We then ran through some of the incidents that led to Portland’s fall from title contention as well as the trades that ravaged the franchise. This includes the trades of Jermaine O’Neal to Indiana and Brian Grant to Miami as well as the many suspensions and infractions that earned the players in Portland the name of the “Jail Blazers.”
Eggers covered the Blazers as a beat writer and columnist for multiple years with the Oregonian and Tribune. He has also written a book with Clyde Drexler about the Blazer guard’s career as well as a book recapping Portland’s run to two NBA Finals appearances in the early ‘90s. We also spoke a little bit about the current Blazers projections for the upcoming season as well as Kerry’s start in journalism. Follow Kerry on Twitter @kerryeggers.
