*Not Edited!*Â
*Not my Gif! sorry if I wasnât suppose to use it.* *Also I got the names of Bobâs family from another post I saw on Tumblr. I am not trying to copy and I would definitely give the person credit if I remembered their name!*Â
It had been almost two years since the mission that had Y/N on the highest dose of anxiety medication. Since then, Bob hadnât been on too many suicide missions. That didnât mean that he got any free time off work, but neither did Y/N. The Mitchell girl had worked at the base for six months and decided not to renew her contract with the navy. She had actually packed up and moved wherever Bob went. That is why she became a travel nurse; the pay was slightly better than a stationed nurse and she had a contract that allowed her to follow her boyfriend around whenever he had to be stationed all over the country.Â
âGood morning.â Y/N mumbled as she looked up and noticed Bob checking his phone. The couple knew that they had a flight to catch in order to make it home for Bobâs familyâs Christmas.Â
âGood morning.â Bob replied sitting his phone down and turning his attention towards his girlfriend. âHowâd you sleep?â he asked softly as his hand rubbed up and down y/nâs arm.Â
âAmazing.â She mumbled as she sat up slightly to lean over his body, the sheet going with her to keep her naked body hidden from the morning air. âI needed all of that last night.â she mumbled as she leaned closer to his lips. âThe shared bath, the massage, the orgasms, just being with you.â she murmured before gently pressing her lips to her boyfriendâs.Â
âIâm glad I could help you relax.â He whispered once the two pulled out of their kiss. âWe have to get ready if weâre going to make it to the airport on time.â he mumbled.Â
Y/N nodded before sitting up fully and getting out of bed. She grabbed her clothes that she laid out the previous night and headed towards the shared bathroom. She would never admit it, but she was nervous. It had been forever since she met his family, and she wasnât sure if they liked her or not. Given, it was a short visit so his family didnât really get to know her as in depth as they would have liked. This time the couple would be spending a full week with the Floyd family and that was why she was so anxious. She didnât have to try to impress them the last time she saw them, now she had to make sure that she didnât do anything to make his family hate her.Â
âBaby, we have to leave in ten minutes.â Bob called out from the bedroom. The man knew that it would be Y/Nâs first time not spending Christmas with her father, she had expressed how she was fine with going to visit his family instead of the pair spending the holiday with Penny and Pete.Â
âIâm done.â Y/N spoke as she walked out of the bathroom. âso, for anxiety reasons, who all am I going to have to impress?âÂ
Bob let out a small laugh before racking his brain for everyone that is going to be there for Christmas. âMy mom and dad, obviously.â he stated as he was silently making a list. âMy sister, My brother, My aunt and uncles, and My sister might let Elaine come.â Bob stated before walking over to his girlfriend and letting a small smile grace his face. âI just want to tell you before we get home, that Elaine and I have some history. Itâs nothing serious... but she seems to keep holding on to what happened in high school before I joined the Navy. I gave my sister specific instructions to keep her away the first time you met them because you are important to me.âÂ
Y/N nodded taking everything he said in, âSo whatâs different about now?â The Mitchell girl asked as she raised an eyebrow at her boyfriend.Â
âThe difference is that I know for a fact that nothing can come between us now, I was still a bit insecure in our relationship back then.â He mumbled causing Y/N to smile bigger than she had during the whole conversation.Â
âWere you scared to lose me, LT. Floyd?â She teased before kissing his cheek and walking around him to pack her toothbrush that she had just used in the bathroom.Â
âActually, I was.â He admitted before grabbing their bags and heading out to the vehicle.Â
**Â
The flight was not as long as Y/N expected, and they were in Bobâs hometown. The first time the girl had met his family, she was shocked to know that Bob was a bit country. His family lived on a ranch, and she thought it was beautiful. It seemed so peaceful and quiet, having all that land to do whatever you wanted with.Â
âI love this place,â Y/N spoke out as their rental car arrived at the ranch. There were already quite a few cars in the driveway of the house. âIt seems so peaceful to be surrounded by nature.âÂ
Bob was over-the-moon about how well his girlfriend liked where he came from. Given, he knew that she liked nature and there was plenty of it on their property Once the car was in the park, the couple got out and grabbed their items from the trunk. Y/N let Bob walk in front of her because of it being his house and she didnât feel comfortable just walking in. âMom, Dad?â Bob yelled once he opened the door and came in without knocking. The chattering in the kitchen halted upon hearing Bobâs voice and the sound of footsteps heading towards the beginning of the room couldnât be missed.Â
âRobby!â A high-pitched voice squealed as Bob got tackled in a hug. That made him have to regain his balance. The strong smell of cotton candy wafted over to Y/N which caused her to crinkle up her nose.
âElaine, what did I tell you?â Bobâs sister spoke up as she got in sight of what was happening. âHe has a girlfriend, if youâre going to act like that just go home.â She spoke up again while rolling her eyes. The younger girl gave Y/N a small apologetic smile before yanking her best friend off her older brother.
âItâs good to see you Bub,â Reagan spoke as she walked up to her older brother and pulled him into a hug. âNice to see you again, Y/N.â She added as she pulled the girl into a hug. âIgnore Elaine, sheâs had her mind set on marrying Robert since they dated in high school.â she whispered before pulling away and giving the couple a smile.Â
âGood to have you back, little brother.â Bobâs older brother Sean spoke pulling Bob into a hug and nodding at Y/N with a smile on his face. âNice to see you again, Y/N. Weâll get to know more about each other during your stay.â He added before heading back intoÂ
âIâll take our bags to my old room.â Bob spoke as he picked up all the bags. âwhereâs mom and dad?â he asked his sister as he passed her.
âThey went to the store for last minute items that mom forgot she needed.â Reagan spoke as she followed behind Bob but turned into the kitchen instead of going to his old bedroom.
âSo your Y/N? The girl that everyone talks so highly about?â Elaine asked like she was trying to size the girl up.
âI guess so.â The Mitchell girl replied before heading in the direction where Bob went.
âDonât be fooled,â Elaine started causing Y/N to roll her eyes but she stopped to face the desperate girl anyway. âBob promised me a future too.â She stated before prancing off into the kitchen.
Y/N walked into Bobâs old room where he was putting his clothes away in his old closet. The younger girl was rubbing her temples before plopping down on her boyfriendâs bed. âWhatâs up?â Bob sighed as he stopped what he was doing and joined his girl on the bed.
âYou really did a number on Elaine, huh?â Y/N muttered while she laid her head over on Bobâs shoulder. The jet lag was starting to set in, and the annoying voice of the girl downstairs was making the girl have a headache.
âBelieve it or not we werenât that serious. We dated for like four months and then I graduated and decided to go to the navy. She begged for me to marry her so she could say she was married to someone in the military.â Bob explained as he laid his head over on hers. âI didnât see a point in marriage. I tried to love her but I couldnât.â
âWhat about now?â Y/N asked quietly as her nerves set in. The couple hadnât really talked much about marriage, but they had painted a picture of their future together. âYour view on marriage, I mean.â She whispered.
âI see us getting married.â He answered softly as his hand grabbed hers âIâve never loved someone as deeply as I love you. Even if we broke up now, youâve already ruined me, Y/N.â
Y/N let out a small huff and snort mix, âyeah right, bobby.â she muttered as she glanced up at him and noticed his blue eyes staring a hole through her. âI promise you that I am not that special, there are millions of girls out there better than me.â
âThatâs where youâre wrong.â The wso replied as he leaned forward and placed a soft kiss on his girlâs lips. The couple heard the door open, and voices pick up. The shuffling around and sound of grocery bags were enough to make Bob grab Y/Nâs hand and head out of his roomÂ
âWe noticed the car in the driveway, did Bob and Y/N get here?â A sweet ladyâs voice asked as Bobâs siblings started talking amongst themselves.
âWe made it about 30 minutes ago.â Bob spoke up as he walked into the kitchen with the Mitchell girlâs hand intertwined with his. Irene and Joe walked over to hug their son before Irene pulled Y/N into her embrace.Â
âItâs so great to see you, honey.â Irene smiled as she pulled away from the hug she started. âI hope my sonâs been treating you right.â She stated with a knowing look. Some how her statement sounded like a question in a way.Â
âHeâs been great, perfect, really.â the Mitchell girl spoke as her cheeks got a bit red. She never liked being put on the spot and knowing that this Christmas will determine if Bobâs family likes her was enough to make her double check herself.Â
The rest of the evening was spent with Bob and his family catching up. Irene getting to know Y/N before the girl excused herself after dinner and headed to bed. Claiming the Jet lag had gotten ahold of her but sheâd be up for more bonding time tomorrow.Â
âI can come with you.â Bob offered starting to stand up before she ushered him to sit back down.Â
âNo, spend time with your family.â Y/N insisted. âYou can come to bed later. Iâm just going to call my dad and tell him that I made it, before going to sleep.â She assured.Â
Thatâs what the girl did, she went to Bobâs old room and called Pete so he wouldnât worry from not hearing from the girl. After talking to her father she had laid in bed and slowly drifted off to sleep. Bob had come to bed around 10 pm and carefully climbed in his bed to not wake up his girl.Â
*2 Days Later*
Over the last two days the Floyd household had gotten pretty full. It was now Christmas Eve and everyone was getting ready for the evening dinner and then the first round of presents. The second round of presents would come tomorrow morning, something that Bobâs aunt and uncles came up with to encourage their kids to go to bed early.Â
âMrs. Floyd, I can help you if you want to go open presents with your kids.â Y/N offered as she stepped into the kitchen. Bobâs aunt and uncle were trying to settle everyone down. âI can hold the food down until you get done.â she explained a bit better as she walked over to where she was fixing a pre-dinner. Something that Y/N didnât know about, the fact that they have a big dinner on Christmas and a medium dinner the night before. She wasnât used to big dinners, honestly.Â
âNo, Hunny, they can wait. You have to open your presents too.â Bobâs mom told the younger girl as she started on her potatoes. âand please, call me Irene.âÂ
Y/N was confused about why she would have presents under the tree. She had only met Bobâs family once before this and they only stayed for a day. No one really got to meet her and get to know her. âBob and I arenât exchanging gifts until in the morning. So I can really take it off your hands.â She offered again softly.Â
Irene gave the girl a smile. âDid you know that you are the first girl that Robert has ever brought home since he joined the navy? Heâs told us about a few girlfriends but later he ended up telling us that he didnât see a future with them.â Y/Nâs shocked expression stayed on her face for a moment before she came to her senses. âThat tells me that youâre important to my son and so Joe and I bought you a few presents too. We never like anyone to feel left out.âÂ
The Mitchell girl felt herself blush before glancing through the door into the living room. Bob was in there playing with some of the kids that had showed up this morning. They were his cousins and she heard him apologize not knowing that his entire family would be here and not just the usual. Y/N understood, he was home from the Navy and that wasnât a common thing. âI love him, a lot.â She spoke up as Bob met her eyes and gave her a smile. She finally turned around towards her boyfriendâs mom again and let Bob go back to what he was doing. âI hate to ask and I trust Bob completely, but whatâs the story behind Elaine?â She whispered so no one would risk hearing her.Â
Irene huffed a bit before thinking about the problematic girl that Reagan had brought to Christmas this year. The older woman knew that Elaine never stood a chance when Bob was bringing Y/N around his family. Not that she stood a chance anyway. âI donât even know why Robby dated her in the first place, he wasnât interested in her. Maybe he just wanted to have some experience before he went out in the world.â Irene huffed making Y/N cringe at the news that those two were probably each otherâs first. âThey broke up when he joined the navy, she kept on pushing for them to get married since he would be away all the time. He kept telling her that he didnât want to settle down at that young age. I mean he was freshly 18. He hadnât really got to experience other relationships.âÂ
âWas she in love with him or just obsessed?â Y/N asked softly as she helped the older woman put all the food in the rightful place. Dinner was basically done now and they just needed to get the plates and silverware out.Â
âBoth, i guess. Iâm not clear on that.â Irene answered before she turned to the younger girl that she knew held her sonâs heart. âHe loves you, Y/N. so so much. I can tell by the way he acts around you.âÂ
Y/N went to answer before a voice interrupted their conversation, âWhat are you two talking about?â Bob asked softly as he entered the kitchen and went over to his mother and girlfriend.Â
Irene sent a wink to the Mitchell girl before leaving the kitchen to go get the rest of the family. Bob raised his eyebrow at his girlfriend as he waited for her to talk. âYou need a hair cut, ya know.â Y/N stated as a smile grew on her face.Â
âYou arenât going to tell me?â Bob asked before he kissed her cheek.Â
âNot a chance, Lt.â The girl laughed as the family started gathering in the kitchen to get ready to eat.Â
*Â
âIâm sorry my family went all out on those gifts,â Bob sighed as he ran a hand over his face. âI didnât tell them what you liked so if you donât like them, then we can do something.âÂ
âBabe, itâs the thought that counts. But they were lovely.â Y/N honestly wasnât expecting to receive what she did from the Floyd family. You could tell that they spent the same money on you as they did Bob, which was crazy since he was their son. âI love you, you know.â She told him even though she knew that he knew how she felt.
âI love you.â Bob mumbled before pressing his lips to hers.
**
The couple woke up to the smell of lunch already cooking. Y/N could smell the ham and turkey baking as she looked over at the clock on bobs nightstand. 10:49 lit up in big red letters causing the girl to furrow her eyebrows at how she slept so long. âBobby.â She whispered as she turned around in his arms so she was facing him. âBabe.â She mumbled again.
âMhm?â He questioned as he stretched. The sheet falling down his shirtless chest, evidence of their previous activities. âIs it really 10:52?â He asked as his eyes caught the clock.
âThatâs why I was trying to wake you.â Y/N mumbled as she got out of bed and put her undergarments back on and grabbed her outfit for Christmas out of her bag. âI have to put on light makeup, Iâll be down in a minute.â
Bob got ready and headed down to his family that was waiting in the kitchen and living room. Y/N quickly put her makeup on and did her hair so she looked decent and left the room. Y/N knew that she needed to talk to Reagan before everyone started opening gifts. Mainly because she needed to know if what she felt was true was accurate.
*
Two pink lines popped up instantly on the test that Y/N was holding. Reagan had taken the girl to the store with a few questions asked along the way. Turns out Irene had forgotten a condiment from the store and needed that as well.
âSo?â Reagan mumbled from outside her private bathroom. She had noticed what the Mitchell girls bag held and immediately wanted to know if she was going to be an aunt or not.
Y/N walked out of the bathroom with her hands trembling, âitâs positive.â She spoke, the words sounding foreign to her. She carefully handed the test over to Reagan.
Before either of the girls could say anything else, the Floyd girls bedroom door opened and Sean walked in with Elaine behind him. âMomâs been looking for you two.â Sean spoke up before looking down in his sisters hand. âIs that?â He asked looking between the two girls.
Reagan and Y/N looked at each other as the Mitchell girl was pleading with her eyes to take the fall. Reagan understood that the other wanted to tell her brother before the rest of his siblings or family. âItâs mine.â Reagan spoke up. âItâs negative.â She added before walking in her bathroom and throwing it away. âThose one night stands getcha sometimes.â She added as she ushered everyone out of the room.
âThank you.â Y/N whispered as she passed her boyfriends sister.
The four joined the family down in the kitchen. The kids were already eating and other family members had started a line around the kitchen. Bob was nowhere to be found in the kitchen, which made Y/N sneak away from the rest of his family and wonder off to his bedroom.
âNo, Natasha. I canât talk right now.â Bob was whispering when Y/N quietly entered the room. You could tell that he didnât hear his girlfriend come in. âshe doesnât know, and rooster canât know either. why? because heâll kill me.â Bob mumbled. âIf either of them knew what we have been doing this last year, rooster would kill me, and I donât even want to know Y/Nâs reaction would be.â the slightly younger girl felt tears well in her eyes. Of course, it was partly her pregnancy maybe, but the fact that Bob sounded suspicious had her worried. She never once doubted him, not in slightest, so why did this all sound like cheating to her.Â
âBabe,â Y/N called making herself known. She was hoping that she was masking the worriedness and sadness on her face. âYour mom is wanting us.âÂ
âListen, I have to go. Talk to you later.â Bob hung up the phone and walked towards his girlfriend. âSorry, Bradley called. Apparently, them two are having some troubles.âÂ
If there was one thing that Y/N Mitchell picked up from Pete, it was how to hide emotions. Something that he had been good at since Gooseâs death. âI hope they work it out.â She mumbled as Bob intertwined their hands together before they left his room.Â
After everyone ate it was time for presents and that is when Bob and Sean took the gator to go check on some animals. Y/N sat alone in the corner until she was joined by Elaine. The Mitchell girl dreaded what was to come, but she knew that she wouldnât make a scene. It was Christmas after all.Â
âWhatâs wrong?â Elaine asked softly. The annoying sound in her voice completely gone. âI know, I was bitch earlier... I just wanted to see if Robert was serious. I am sorry for how I acted.â She apologized making Y/N give her a small smile.Â
âEven though I probably shouldnât trust you, I heard a strange conversation between Bobby and a mutual friend of ours. It honestly sounded like they had been cheating on me and my brother with each other.â Y/N mumbled as she watched the kids go crazy over their gifts.Â
âThe positive pregnancy test in Reaganâs trash can has nothing to do with your feelings?â Elaine asked softly and quietly. Y/Nâs eyes widen slightly as she turned away from the girl. âDonât worry. I wonât tell anyone.âÂ
âReagan told you it was hers.â Y/N stated as she felt the nerves act up and her hands get clammy.Â
âI have been out with Reagan everywhere; we are best friends after all. She hasnât hooked up since her ex-boyfriend. That was way too long for her to want to take a test.â the younger girl explained.Â
âI havenât told him yet.â Y/N mumbled as she played with her fingers.Â
âI know. If it helps, Robert is head over heels for you. Whatever you heard had to be a mistake. Heâs always been loyal to everyone, even if he wasnât happy.â She whispered as the two boys entered the room.Â
The two girls gave each other a smile as Sean asked to speak with Elaine for a moment. Bob had joined his girlfriend in the spot that his ex-girlfriend had left.Â
âWhat was that about?â Bob asked softly as he grabbed your hand.Â
âShe was apologizing.â Y/N said before turning towards Bob. âWe need to talk.âÂ
Bob nodded before he stood up and offered his hand for Y/N. She grabbed his hand and stood up. âI want to take you somewhere.â With that the couple made their way out of the house and to Joeâs gator that was sitting outside. âI know you said that you love how peaceful it is here, so I want to show you around for a bit.â Bob said as he helped her up in the UTV.Â
The couple made their way away from the ranch house. Y/n honestly thought that he would stop and show all of the animals that he took care of as a kid and so on. Thatâs not what he was doing at all, and she realized it once they passed all the animals and headed towards a trail in the wood lining. She figured now was as good as any to ease into the natasha talk. She didnât want to come straight out and accuse him of cheating, it wouldnât be like either of them. âItâs crazy, isnât it?â she asked softly as she took in the beautiful scenery.Â
âwhat is?â Bob asked softly as he drove carefully on the trail.Â
âHow weâve been together for so long.â Y/N stated as she looked down at her freshly polished finger nails. âI almost figured you and Natasha would have eventually ended up together.â she whispered but loud enough for Bob to hear her.Â
The Floyd boy let out a laugh, âSheâs like another sister. I am head over heels in love with you, Y/N/N. I already told you that you have ruined me and i meant that.âÂ
Y/N felt a bit at ease, but she knew that her worry would still be there until she figured out why he was calling Natasha in secret. It was still a bit of an uneasy feeling. âI have something I really need to tell you-â Y/N started only to cut herself off when the trail ended at what seemed to be a hunting cabin. The cabin had lights hung up around it and the porch was decorated beautifully.Â
âI want to give you a tour and then you can let me know if youâd like to stay out here tonight.â Bob spoke before getting out of the gator and then heading towards the other side to help his girl out. âI thought we could use some alone time.âÂ
Y/n gave her boyfriend a smile before waiting for him to open the cabin door. It wasnât very big, but you could tell that it was made for a hunting party or maybe even birthday parties for the Floydâs.Â
âThis is the living room space, it isnât much but the couch does pull out into a bed.â He explained. âThen the kitchen is over here, it isnât anything fancy, but I already stocked it up with your favorite snacks.â He blushed a bit making y/n squeeze his hand. âIn this room is an extra bathroom and this one is the extra bedroom. bunk beds. And then the master bedroom.â He stated as Y/n felt his hands start to sweat a bit. âOpen it.â he urged softly.Â
Y/N gave him a look before grabbing the door handle and twisting the doorknob. Pushing the door open, a small gasp left her lips as her hand came to cover her mouth. She felt her eyes watering up as Bob stepped in front of her slightly. The room was covered in rose peddles, had blackout curtains hung up so the candles and fairy lights were the only lights in the room. Mini letter lights spelled out âMarry Me?â on the bedside table.Â
âY/N, I have loved you since you took notice of me in the hard deck. I thought you were beautiful when you came over to greet Bradley and I wasnât expecting this to go anywhere because you are way out of my league. How i managed to get you and keep you is out of my knowledge. I love you so much and i know that I want to be with you forever. Will you please do me the honor of marrying me?â Bob asked.Â
Y/N could sense his nerves and she knew there was a lot more that he wanted to say. She knew what her answer was even if he didnât get everything he wanted to say out in the open. âof course, Bobby.â She mumbled as tears came down her face. Bob slipped the shiny diamond ring on her finger before standing up and pulling her in for a kiss. âI love you so much.âÂ
âYou still have a few more presents at the house, so we should probably get going.â Bob mentioned after he placed another kiss on his fianceeâs lips.Â
âWere you serious about staying here tonight?â She asked bob as he nodded, âbecause I would love to celebrate alone with you tonight.â she mumbled.Â
The ride back to the ranch house was silent. The two were just enjoying each otherâs peaceful company before the Floyd household would start celebrating. Y/N had no idea that one of Bobâs Christmas presents were waiting for her back at the ranch house to congratulate her. Of course, Bob asked Maverick for permission before he proposed. He asked him months before he even asked, he wanted the time to be perfect and he knew the Floyd hunting cabin would be the perfect place. Thatâs when he knew it would be around Christmas time.
âIâm ready to go spend the night with you.â Y/N whined slightly as her left hand made its way to the back of Bobâs head as they pulled up to the house.
âYou can in about three hours.â Bob mumbled. He then grabbed her hand and gave it a kiss before getting out and helping her out of the gator. âYour next present is right through that door.â He mumbled kissing her head.
Y/N gave her fiancĂŠ a small smile while shaking her head. âYouâre something else, Floyd.â She stated as she walked into the house first. The multiple shouts of âcongratulations!â And balloons flying everywhere made the girl jump. Before she noticed what bob was talking about.
âCongratulations, sweetheart.â The older man said as he opened his arms for his daughter to come give him a welcoming hug. âHow did my little girl get grown up so fast.?â He mumbled with his voice growing in sadness.
âTime flies.â Y/N mumbled pulling away from Maverick. âIâll always be your little girl.â She added as she wiped the tears from her face and her father did the same. Maverick never liked showing emotion in front of anyone and over the years he had slowly been okay with showing emotion in front of Penny, Y/N, and Bradley.
âI know you will.â He nodded before Bradley pulled the girl into a hug.
âBrownie, donât mess up the hair.â Y/N groaned as she shoved her brother figure off of her playfully.
âHere I thought Iâd be married before you.â He shook his head.
âGrow a pair and maybe you still can.â Y/N winked as she playfully hit him. The girl then looked over and saw Natasha beside Bradley wearing a smile on her face. She nodded at the girl, still feeling uneasy about the situation earlier. She quickly turned around and wrapped her arms around bob. âThank you so much. It means a lot that youâd ask my dad and brother to fly out here.â
âAnything for you.â He mumbled before pulling her into a kiss. âI love you so much.â
*a few hours later*
After opening presents from everyone, the families all made their way to bed. Bradley, Natasha, and Maverick was staying in a guest loft inside an extra barn that the Floydâs had used for their stable men. With Joe being retired, they didnât need to hire anyone to help with animals anymore so the loft was left unused and was cleaned up for Y/Nâs family to come stay in.
Y/N and bob had made their way to the cabin about 30 minutes ago, where Bob had immediately drawn the couple a bath to unwind. Thatâs where they were, in a soaker tub (which was a new upgrade) and relaxing against one another. The bubbles covered their bodies as Y/Nâs back laid against Bobâs chest.
âSo, did you propose to me in the room you lost your virginity in? Cause if so, very classy Lt. Floyd.â Y/N joked with a laugh and intertwined her left hand with his hand. His fingers playing with the ring on her finger.
âNo, you were actually only the third.â He admitted honestly. Most people had the talk before getting engaged but it didnât bother the couple. They knew that they were each otherâs forever and thatâs what mattered.
âElaine?â She asked expectantly.
âNever did.â Bob spoke softly. âI wasnât very popular and I wasnât the one that people went for. One night stands were never my thing. I was 21 when it happened. It was with someone I thought I loved, but now I know that I didnât know what love was. Iâve never loved anyone the way I love you, thatâs how I know youâre my forever.â
Y/N turned her face up so she could look at her handsome man. âI lost mine at 18.â She mumbled before placing a kiss on his jaw. âIt was someone I almost married, he was in the army, turns out he knocked up another girl while I was engaged to him so, thatâs why that ended.â
Bobâs hand came up and rubbed over her jaw line as he lowered his head and placed a soft kiss on her lips. âThatâll never happen with me.â He promised.
âI have to ask you something,â y/N whispered so she wouldnât cause tension. âI heard you on the phone with Natasha, earlier and you lied to me and said it was Bradley.â she started. She could see bobâs gears shifting in his head, trying to see where this was going. âYou said that Bradley would kill you and that you wouldnât wanna see my reaction if I found out what you two were doing.â
âDid you think I was cheating on you?â He asked carefully as he noticed panic in Y/Nâs eyes. âBaby, it was Natasha helping me buy things for the proposal and ring. I told her not to tell Bradley that I asked for her help instead of his for ring shopping. I also didnât wanna see your reaction if you found the ring before I was ready because I really wanted it to be special.â
Y/N gave him a small smile, âit was my anxiety, it wasnât me in general. I know youâd never do that.â
The two carried on with conversation before getting out of the bath and headed towards the shower to clean themselves. After finishing showering the two went to their bags that were placed on the king bed in the cabin.
âBobby,â y/n called as she tucked her towel so it would stay up on its own. âI have one more present for you, I just didnât want to give it to you in front of everyone.â
Bob gave his girl a look before carefully grabbing the gift box out of her hand. It wasnât too big but it wasnât super small either. It was neatly decorated with his name scribbled on top. âYou didnât have to get me anything else.â
âJust open it.â She urged with a smile. She could feel the tears coming while she waited for him.
He sat down on the end of the bed with y/n standing beside of him. He carefully opened the box and read the top before his eyes widen and he noticed tue white stick with a blue lid. A red plus sign on a test, and pink two lines on the other stick. The box contained a letter board reading âI canât wait to meet you daddy.â And the lid of the box, which he read first said, âto the best daddy ever.â
Y/N wanted to get a pair of booties or a onesie to put in their but she didnât get a chance too. She wanted to wait and make it special but today was special just as well. âAre you serious?â Bob asked with tears in his eyes. âAm I gonna be a dad?â
Y/N nodded as her own tears started spilling, âyouâre gonna be a daddy.â She whispered as Bob stood up and pulled her into a hug. âI just found out today and the only one that knows is Reagan. I thought we could wait and tell everyone after our first ultrasound to make sure everything is okay.â
âBaby, youâve just given the best gift ever.â He mumbled as he rocked the couple back and forth.
âI love you forever, Robert Floyd.â
âI love you, Y/N Floyd, forever and always.â
| The last part! It took so long because I had so many other problems but itâs all good. I have a Jake âHangmanâ series coming so⌠if you like him then you can check my profile because it should be up in the next few days! It could have ended better but it is what it is.|

Summary: Reader hates Hangman cause he's an asshole. Hangman can't stop teasing you about it. When he sees you flirt with another he jumps in, acting all jealous and possesive. Dragging you to a secluded area, he asks just how much you hate him before kissing you. Shocking your crew when you start dating.
Your F16 shot past Phoenix and Bob oneâs. Breathing loud in the mask as you turned the handle. Your F16 doing a turn, hanging vertical up in the air. â âWow slow down there Y/n.â â Phoenix called out over the intercom. â âBack.â â Bob shouted loud seeing another F16 behind him. Phoenix pulled up as the F16 went nose up. She let it tip till it faced forwards once more. Confused she looked at the F16 that had simply flew forwards.
Ignoring them in the dogfight. â âWhat are you doing?â â Phoenix whispered. You groaned loud making your F16 twirl in the air. The F16 on your tail, not easy to loose. â âCut it out Bagman!â â you shouted over the intercom. You heard him chuckle. â âIâm coming for you.â â he laughed out. He sped up ignoring Coyoteâs F16 that he couldâve easily played out of the game.Â
Turning and tumbling, you tried to get your F16 behind Hangmanâs. â âNot interested in more snacks?â â Phoenix teased over the intercom. Hangman only seemed to have eyes for you. Making it his goal to cut you out of the game. Everything else not caring for. â âNope, just the big meal.â â he replied over the intercom with a smile.
He was tailing you. Following your F16âs movement smoothly. Narrowing his eyes a bit, he flipped the protecter up. Giving him a clear to press the button. The scanner on his screen tracking you mindlessly till it found a lock on you. ââGotcha.â â he said pressing the button. There were some beeps as he cheered loud. â âYouâre out of the game Scout.â â he shouted loud in victory.
You turned round to fly beside him. Hangman saluted you as you held your hand up, flipping it over to stuck your middle finger up to him. Hangman laughed more. â âGod I love winning from you Scout.â â he said with ease, getting all comfortable in his seat. You brought your F16 down to the landing track.
Rooster came running up to you as you got out of the F16. â âGod I hate him.â â you muttered out. Rooster joined your side, swinging his arm around your shoulder. â â3 minutes Scout. You managed to get him off your back for 3 minutes. Thatâs 20 seconds longer than last time.â â Rooster spoke as you laughed mockingly at him.
âEvery damn dogfight!â â you groaned out. â âHe always singles me out.â â you finished with frustration. Every dogfight Hangman always came chasing after you to get you out of the game. In the beginning it took him about 30 seconds to do so. Over the courses, you had figured heâd only come after you so you adapted. Learning how to stay out of his sight that little longer.
Today it seemed to be 3 minutes. 3 minutes he had been chasing you around before kicking you out of the game. Why? No one had a clue. Perhaps cause he was just an asshole. Rooster pushed you closer to him. â âIâll buy you drinks when this is over.â â he said. â âYou better.â â you answered nudging him in the side.
Rooster chuckled leading you back to the others. Maverick patted you on the back once you joined the others. With a deep sigh, you sat down. Listening in on the intercom of Hangman and Phoenix still up in the air. After another 2 minutes or so. It was over.
Hangman walked in all smug. Phoenix shooting him a glare as Bob walked quietly behind her. You were all dismissed as you and Phoenix walked to the changing rooms. Holding your fresh shirt in your hands, you had the need to groan loud in frustration. â âEvery single time.â â you called out catching Phoenixâs attention. â âI hate it.â â you added. â âI know.â â Phoenix said dramatically noticing a figure appear in the door opening.
âIsnât that sweet.â â Hangman came leaning against the door, arms crossed. â âYouâre getting all worked up over me.â â he teased with a pestering smile. Giving him a glare, you threw your shirt at his face. He dodged it as it landed in the hallway. Jake chuckling teasingly taking a run for it. You rolled your eyes, getting to the hallway to retrieve your shirt.
You finished getting dressed, slamming your locker shut. You drove with Phoenix to the bar, meeting up with everyone else. Most of the boys were already there. You waved Phoenix goodbye, coming up to the bar. You held two fingers up to Penny as she already knew the order.
On the other side of the bar appeared Hangman. â âIâll have four more on the old timer.â â he said, leaning with his elbow on the bar. Penny quirked her eyebrow up. â âOh, I meant Y/n.â â he enlightened Penny with a slight point at you. â âDonât you ever grow tired of your lame jokes?â â you asked him. â âNope.â â he responded all quirky. â âCertainly not when I can make you blush like that.â â he said.
Immediately you pressed your hand against your cheek, feeling if you had warmed up. Feeling if you were flushed without you knowing. Jake laughed loud from your reaction. He had lied, but it was fun to see you actually believe it. Penny sat down the beers in front of Hangman. â âNext time itâs your turn.â â she warned him.
Hangman clicked his tongue with a wink at you. Penny turned to your side of the bar. Giving you a sympathetic smile whilst giving you the drinks. You took them, going around the bar to your company. Phoenix sat in one of the booths with Fanboy and Rooster. You set her drink down, scooting in at Roosterâs side.
âHe still bothering you.â â Rooster asked, swooping an arm over you. Your gaze flashed towards Hangman by the pool table. He looked back at you with a smile, tapping the pool stick gently on the ground. â âHe just thinks heâs interesting.â â you told them, making them all laugh. â âEnough about Bagman. I want to enjoy this night.â â you said leaning closer to the table. â âCheers to that.â â Phoenix said holding her drink up.
You raised your drink as well letting it touch with hers. The four of you chatted and laughed. Having so much fun it showed. It caught Hangmanâs attention from time to time. A few more hours in and drinks away, you got up for another order. Exhaling loud you made your way over to Pennyâs bar. Leaning a bit on the counter, waiting for her as she had gone to the back for some refills.
From across the bar, your eyes met up with a boy. He wore his uniform as you figured he was on a different program. He smiled at you, making you smile shyly back. He couldnât seem to get his attention away from you. Penny returned, blocking his view as you saw him try to look past her to catch you.
It made you chuckle teasingly finding it cute. The man ordered as he then gestured at you. â âIâm buying her drinks too.â â he said. â âThatâs be five more drinks on your behalf.â â you told him, letting him know he wasnât just buying for one drink. â âSure.â â he responded with a sweet smile. Penny didnât interfered getting the drinks. The man patted the bar before going around and joining your side.
âSo youâre a Top gunner.â â he remarked observing your uniform. You turned more towards him, observing his uniform. It had a dark blue shade. â âYouâre an upper-sider.â â you acknowledged. â âThat I am maâam.â â he said making you laugh. Penny was setting the drink on the counter as you only seemed to have eyes for each other. The guy picked up a drink, handing one to you. He took one for himself, letting your drinks touch. â âCheers to you sugar.â â he said. You leaned a bit closer, chatting with him. You remained by the bar as your friends were still waiting for their drinks.
Hangmanâs gaze fell on you by the bar. Seeing another man with you. His eyes widened brief before they narrowed to a glare. â âHangman⌠Hangman⌠Jake.â â Coyote said to get his attention. Coyote patted Jake against his shoulder. â âItâs your turn man.â â he said surprised when Jake pushed his pool stick into his hands. He made his way over to the bar, ready to break whatever was going on apart.
Jake moved himself in front of you, blocking your way from him. The guy looked surprised at the sudden appearance of him. Jake eyed him up and down. â âWhat do you think you are doing?â â he asked rudely. â âIâŚIâm just talking to her.â â the guy answered. Jake scoffed with a put up smile. â âJake.â â you shout-whispered behind him, nudging his back with your fist to make him cut it out.
âIâm sorry but I didnât gave you permission to talk to her.â â Jake answered. â âJake.â â you repeated giving him another nudge to stop embarrassing you. â âI didnât know I needed permission.â â the guy answered, not backing down. Jake gave him a taunting smile to mock him. â âJake please.â â you begged for him to stop being such an idiot.
âIâve got a fun idea.â â Jake said giving the guy a little shove by his shoulder. â âWhy donât you back off.â â he called out. â âJake!â â you called out loud, already feeling embarrassed enough as all your friends were watching. â âWhat are you her boyfriend or something?â â the guy asked loud. You hated it and wanted to escape so you started to leave. Before you even set two steps, you were held back by Jake grabbing your wrist, keeping you by his side.
His grip firm around your wrist. The hatred in his eyes clear. Jake bumped hard with his shoulder against him, whilst dragging you along. You looked back over your shoulder to Phoenix, not sure what was happening. Phoenix could only stare speechless back at you. Jake dragged you over to where the toilets were. Secluded and away from everyone else. He let go of you by the window.
âWhat the hell Hangman!â â you called out. Suddenly startled when Jake moved closer, pressing his hands beside you on the glass, locking you in. â âHow much do you hate me?â â he asked, making you widen your eyes in shock. â âWhat?â â you called out confused. â âJust how much do you hate me Y/n.â â he needed to know. For a moment you thought he was serious till you saw that smirk appear.
âIâŚIâŚI donât know.â â you responded stuttering as you couldnât utter a word. Not with Hangman leaning in so close to you. You looked away, finding his fixed stare a bit too intense. Hangman removed one hand from against the glass, taking your chin to make you face him. â âHow much.â â he whispered eyeing your lips. You parted your lips to speak, not sure what to say. A moment later were his lips on yours.
To your surprise you were kissing him back. Not sure why you were kissing this fool back. His hands touched your lower back, pressing you closer to him as your hands found a way to his neck. Hangman broke the kiss off whilst smirking. â âSo how much?â â he asked teasingly making you roll your eyes at him, pushing his face away by his cheek in a playful way.Â
He grabbed you again, kissing you a second time as he didnât seem to get enough from it. The two of you returned to the others, collecting the drinks still on the bar to hand them out. Hangman winked at you before returning to Coyote to finish his game.
The next day you were in the hangar with everyone. You sat down with Phoenix and Bob. Maverick chatting with Cyclone as they waited for the last recruits to join them. Hangman, Fanboy and Coyote neared to take a seat. Hangman first went over to you, coming to stand behind your chair. He pressed his hands down on it, lowering his head as he gave you a kiss upside down.
Phoenixâs eyes widened as Bobâs jaw dropped. Even Maverick stared shockingly at the display. Hangman pulled himself back up, seeing all eyes were on him. â âWhat?â â he called out. You could disappear from embarrassment. Hangman nudged Bob against his arm to get up, making way for him. Bob got up still staring as Hangman came sitting down in his seat.
"Please begin.â â Hangman told Maverick. Bob quickly took a seat behind Phoenix as Maverick cleared his throat. He moved up to the front, beginning his lecture. It was hard to get everyoneâs attention as no one had thought the two of you would start dating. Coming as a total surprise to them.

a/n: i got this idea from the comments of my last post with ranch! bob floyd so thank you to @nerdgirljen for planting this idea in my head!
summary: how bob finally gets what he wants
pairing: ranch! bob floyd x reader
warnings: SMUT 18+, breeding kink, slight praise and degradation kink, unprotected piv, talk of cum (i think that's it?)
----------------------
Heâd had the dream again. He was a dad. You two had a baby girl and boy, twins. He was playing with them out in the field and you were by the picnic blanket, pregnant in one of your gorgeous sundresses.Â
Fuck he wanted it so bad.Â
He got out of your shared bed and walked downstairs, grabbing himself a cold cup of water. He chugged it down as his mind raced, thinking about your kids, how beautiful youâd look pregnant, how much he wanted to get you pregnant and-
Oh. Bob was hard.Â
This had been an increasingly common issue in recent months, essentially since you two moved onto the ranch and got engaged. You both had chosen that youâd wait until after the wedding to start trying, since you wanted to have the wedding, a nice honeymoon, and a few months alone as newlyweds without kids or pregnancy to spoil your fun.Â
If Bob had it his way? Youâd already be pregnant. Since moving to Texas and with the summer was fast-approaching, you usually opt for sundresses, long skirts and breezy tops, or shorts with one of his light hoodies. Some days, you'd forego clothes all together and just walk around in a swimsuit or just your bra and panties.
It was driving him mad. Everyday, you looked so fucking good he could barely keep it in his pants. You two fucked like rabbits, in the morning, in the afternoon, and at night. But every time you did, the dreaded question of âdo you have a condom?â would dampen his fantasy. He didnât mind, trust me, itâs just he knew how good youâd look with his kid inside of you, his marks on your neck, and his ring on your finger.Â
âAre you thinking about it again?â you asked sleepily, leaning against him.
Bobâs face turned pink. Heâd been caught, but how did you know? âWell baby⌠yeah.â
âIâm so excited,â you smiled and kissed his cheek. âItâs going to be amazing.â
Bob turned around from his position of leaning on the counter. His arms wrapped around you with his hands smoothing up your back and his lips finding yours in a sweet kiss. âYeah, I canât wait to be parents.â
Your head snapped up and looked at him quizzically. âWhat?â
Of course that wasnât what you meant. He doesnât exactly bring up his sexual fantasies that often, and when he does itâs usually just to do it raw, or from the back. Heâs a pretty vanilla guy, but donât get me wrong, itâs amazing.Â
He stuttered his way through half a sentence before you cut him off. âI want to be a mom too.âÂ
He smiled at you. âYeah?â
âYeah.â Your wedding was 4 weeks away, whatâs the worst that could happen?
âAnd I want you to fuck a baby into me,â you whispered seductively and Bobâs brain short circuited.Â
âReally?â he asked as you pulled his top up and over his head, kissing his neck.Â
âPlease Bob,â you begged and he knew he couldnât say no.Â
He grabbed your waist and turned the position around, now your back was against the counter and he was pulling off your clothes, leaving you bare in front of him. âWalkinâ around everyday in those damn sundresses, just waitinâ for me to fuck a baby into you, werenât you?â he kissed up and down your neck as he groped you all over.Â
You moaned at his words alone. When you two had sex, his accent came out a lot more, which was a definite turn-on for you.Â
âI asked a question honey,â he stopped his kisses and delivered a soft smack to your ass.Â
âYes! Yes! Always for you! All for you!â you whined and he smirked. One thing no one would even truly understand was that, while he was the perfect gentleman outside of your bedroom (or kitchen counter, or bathtub, or couch, or stables, or car, or plane- yes it happened, but only once) he was down-right depraved in bed. His hands grabbed anywhere, his lips were all over your skin, and his dick? He was huge.Â
âGood girl,â he cooed and you could feel yourself getting wetter. âMy good girl, right?â You moaned out an incoherent agreement and his finger ran through your folds. âSo wet for me, yeah?â
âAll for you,â you whined. âPlease I-I want it-â Your begging was lost in your throat as you felt his dick pushing in. The entire length of it was shocking, and the girth was something youâd never get used to.Â
âFuck,â he cursed. âYouâre such a good girl, letting me take you like this, on the kitchen counter,â he cooed as he started to slowly move, wrapping his hand over your chin to turn you so he could watch you. His other hand landed on your hip, kneading the skin there. âYou gonnaâ let me fuck a baby into you?â
You nodded furiously as you moaned into his hand. âPlease, I want it-â
âBe patient honey, youâll get what you want,â he smirked.Â
He picked up the pace as you screamed and moaned his name, something heâd never get enough of. Your voice as you screamed out in pleasure, as he was giving you that pleasure, heâd never stop loving it.Â
âBob! Bob, I-Iâm close!â you whined. âPlease donât stop-â
âIâm not stoppinâ âtill I put a baby in you,â he groaned and he felt your walls clamp down on him as you came, squirting all over his cock. He came with you. But he pushed himself and you through overstimulation and continued fucking you. His finger circled your over-sensitive clit, his cock was snapping in and out of you at a godly pace, and his cum shooting into you again, triggered another orgasm.Â
He pulled out and plugged it with his finger, kissing you sweetly. âI donât want you to waste any of it, yeah?â
You just nodded your head, to fucked out to even respond.Â
âGood girl,â he smiled. âYouâre going to be such a pretty momma,â he smirked as he slowly pumped his fingers into you, fucking his cum deeper into you. You leaned against the counter as he fingered you to another orgasm, spewing lines like âmy perfect girl, yeâ gonna give me a baby?â and âGonna look so beautiful pregnant with my kids,â and your personal favourite; âGod youâre my whore, lettinâ me come inside like that.â
You came a lot that night.Â
----------------------
He carried you back up to bed, dressed, and cleaned you up, then planted a soft kiss on your forehead as you fell asleep on his chest.Â
Maybe he should admit his sexual fantasies more often.Â
And maybe he should start painting the nursery.

heartbreak feels so good (part 1)
Pairing: Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw x Reader Word count: 8081 CW: Shitty boyfriends, angst, fluff, slow burn.
Your boyfriend's callsign is Viper, which is fitting. Bradley doesn't know how much longer he can watch this man destroy you, but luckily for him, he doesn't have to wait too long.
Use of Y/N, but no description of reader. THIS IS A MULTI-PART FIC.
Part Two Part Three
After another day of having your feelings totally ignored by your boyfriend, you were looking forward to some alone time. Elijah was so hot and cold that you felt as though you were in a constant state of fight or flight, just waiting for him to either make your day or ruin it completely. Most of the time, it was the latter, and although good days with him were few and far between, they were enough to make you stay. See, you didnât half-ass anythingâleast of all relationshipsâso when you were in something, you were in it. You told Elijah that much after your first date. Youâd been sitting in the front of his beemer eating ice cream, having the first of many deep talks. Between sweet, sticky kisses, youâd told him that you were dating to marry. He told you he was, too.Â
He said, âIâm yours if youâll have me, Y/N.â And that was that.
And it was almost a year ago. Youâd survived a somewhat tumultuous winter with him, desperately trying to cling on to the version of him heâd been during the summer. As time went on, he stopped putting his mask on, secure enough in your relationship that he no longer felt the need to pretend to be caring and considerate. The days were starting to get longer, and the weather was warming up again, but Elijah was so far from the man he was at the start that you might as well have been in a relationship with a different person. Every morning, you woke up with no idea what personality to expect that day, whether or not he was going to take all his personal drama out on you, even though you only ever loved and supported him.Â
Today had been one of those days, and as you finished up with the F-18 engine currently in pieces in front of you, you silently prayed that he wouldnât text you asking to come over. He was also a naval aviator, but you were working on different parts of the base today. Thank God. Elijahâs callsign was Viper, fitting since vipers prey on small animals by envenomating them and watching them die slowly.Â
Coyote appeared behind you, helmet tucked underneath his arm.
âHey, weâre all heading to The Hard Deck for beers,â he told you. âYou cominâ?â You grabbed a rag and made an attempt to wipe some of the oil off. âI donât know,â you sighed. âI want to, but then Iâll have to bring Elijah, and I donât really wanna see him tonight.â âWhy do you have to bring him?â Coyote frowned. âHeâs a lousy drunk and never lets you have any fun.â âIf he finds out I went out with all you guys, heâll think Iâm up to something.â âLike gettinâ with me?â He joked, wiggling his eyebrows. âProbably,â you laughed. âYou or one of the others. Or maybe heâll accuse me of getting with all of you if heâs in a particularly bad mood.â âListen, if you wanna come, youâre welcome. Weâll just make sure nobody posts about it, and weâll get you a fake moustache or somethinâ.â
It broke your heart to think about all your closest friends having a fun night without you. Over the past year, youâd lost count of the amount of experiences youâd missed out on because you didnât want to make Elijah upset or angry with you. The worst part was it was a double standard. He went out without you all the time, didnât tell you where heâd gone or who he was with, and expected you to be okay with it. If you werenât, you could kiss your peace goodbye; heâd spend the next week making your life a living hell, ignoring you entirely until you apologised to him for being hurt by his actions.
âYou know what Javy? Count me in.â He grinned. âThatta girl.âÂ
It was hard to regret coming out when you felt this good. It had been months since youâd gone on a night out without Elijah, which was to say it had been months since you last enjoyed yourself. As you sipped your second sex on the beach, you mused that some kind of higher power must have been looking out for you because youâd yet to receive a single text from your boyfriend. Most of the time, when you spent the night apart, heâd call you incessantly. It was annoying, sometimes bordering on obsessive, and you didnât need him to tell you he was checking on you, or rather, checking that you were alone in your apartment. That much was obvious.Â
Dating an insecure man was not for the weak.
You were sat at one of the high tables next to the window watching Jake, Mickey, Javy, and Reuben play pool. Nat was opposite nursing a beer, glowing in the golden light of the evening. Her phone buzzed, and she picked it up, smiling at the notification.Â
âRoosterâs on his way,â she told you. âHe wasnât gonna come out tonight, but I told him he didnât have a choice. Itâs not every day Y/N Y/L/N leaves the comfort of her apartment.â You scoffed. âThatâs not exactly how Iâd put it.â âNo?â Nat raised a brow.Â
You hadnât drunk in months, and despite only being on your second drink, the booze had loosened your lips significantly.Â
âNo. Itâs not that Iâd rather stay home, itâs that staying home makes my life easier because then I donât have Elijah breathing down my fucking neck.â
Little did you know, Javy had told everyone about your conversation earlier. Not because he was a gossip but because he was worried about you. It was rare for you to open up to the squad about your relationship, but it wasnât hard to guess what happened behind closed doors. They all worked with Viper, for one, and they were familiar with his temperament. Not only that, but you dropped off the face of the Earth a few months after you started dating him, and it didnât take a genius to put two and two together.Â
âI donât know why youâre still with him, Y/N. Heâs an ass.â âI know,â you sighed, frowning into your drink. âItâs just not as straightforward as just leaving. I still love him. If I can make this work, I donât have to start all over again with someone else.â Nat nodded in understanding. âI get wanting to make it work, but at what cost? You donât see your friends, and he uses you as an emotional punching bag. You canât even come to the beach with us without him checking on you every five minutes,â she reached over the table and took your hand. âHeâs killing you.â
This was the first time someone had spoken their mind to you about the situation. While you already knew all of it, hearing it from one of your best friends hit home. Vodka made you emotional, and if not for Bradley, you would have broken down there and then.Â
He walked up to the table and engulfed you in a hug, practically pulling you off your stool. You pressed your face into his shirt, inhaling the scent of clean cotton and sandalwood. Half expecting Elijah to spring out and catch you in the act, you reluctantly pulled away.Â
âHey, Bradley.â âHey yourself, stranger. Canât believe youâre gracing us with your presence.â âI know, itâs been a while.â âA while? Try six months,â he glanced at your almost empty glass and Natâs empty bottle of Heineken. âCan I buy you lovely ladies a drink?â âDo you even have to ask?â Nat retorted. âWhatâre you drinking, darlinâ?â He asked you. You smiled sheepishly. âSex on the beach.â âI can make that happen.â He smirked.
Luckily, you didnât have to come up with a response to that remark because he turned around and headed to the bar. You locked eyes with Nat, and both of you burst out laughing.
Just like that, all the negativity youâd been feeling dissipated like rain against hot tarmac.Â
Bradley came back with the drinks, and the three of you took the opportunity to catch up while the others finished their pool game. You shouldnât have been as surprised as you were to find out that youâd missed a lot. Bradley had started dating one of the medics, but the relationship had crashed and burned almost immediately. He hadnât bothered trying to meet anyone else since. Nat, after watching all her friends have such bad experiences in the dating world, had decided she was better off alone.Â
âHonestly, I donât blame you.â You told her. âYou should dump Viper,â she said with a devilish grin. âAnd we can have a hot girl summer.â Bradley laughed. âCanât say I ever imagined you saying that, Nix.â âIsnât that what itâs called now? We canât be that out of touch, surely.â âI donât wanna think about how old I am.â You said, picking up your phone to see if youâd missed any texts from Elijah. You hated to think what kind of argument missing one of his calls would start. Nat and Rooster shared a knowing look. âIt rings, you know? Out loud.â
Being this transparent was embarrassing.Â
âI think Iâm going to confiscate this for now.â Ignoring your protests, Bradley swiped your phone and tucked it into his pocket. âIf he calls or texts, Iâll let you know.â
You were tipsy enough not to try and take your phone back but not tipsy enough to be unbothered by the idea of Elijah calling and you not picking up.
âIf he calls, I need it back straight away,â you told him sternly. âIf I donât pick up, Iâll never hear the end of it.â
Bradley rolled his eyes, but you knew it wasnât aimed at you. He hated Elijah the most of all your friends. Perhaps sensing some tension, Nat slid off her stool and grabbed your arm, practically yanking you off yours.
âLetâs go pick a song,â she suggested. âWe can get more drinks on the way back.â
Since it had been so long since you last visited The Hard Deck, she let you choose. You picked Rebel Yell by Billy Idol, your mumâs favourite. Admittedly, youâd been missing your home town a lot more than usual lately, perhaps because you were in such a weird place mentally. Things must be worse than you thought if you were considering running home with your tail between your legs.Â
As the night went on, you got drunker and drunker. Bradley watched with a bemused grin as you dragged Bob off to the jukebox again, since he was the easiest person to coerce into doing things. How Bradley wished it was him you were clinging to. Not that he was jealous of Bobâbecause that would be like being jealous of a puppyâhe just desperately wanted to be the object of your affection.Â
While you and Bob went to change the music, Bradley struck up a conversation with Natasha and Reuben, who erupted into laughter when you pulled Bobâs arm so hard he almost toppled over.Â
âItâs nice to have Y/N out, huh?â He observed. Nat looked at him like he was the biggest dickhead in the world. âCome on, Bradshaw. He might be an ass, but sheâs got a boyfriend.â
Bradley sipped his beer, desperately trying to come up with a believable response. Reuben smirked knowingly, which only made Bradley more annoyed.
âI donât have a thing for Y/N.â âWhatever helps you sleep at night, man.â âCome on, Payback. You too?â Reuben shrugged. âDoesnât take a genius to work it out. You look at her like sheâs Godâs gift.â
The reason Bradley looked at you like you were Godâs gift is because you were, but nobody was supposed to know that.Â
âWhy do women stay with guys that treat them like shit?â Bradley asked. âDepends on the woman,â Natasha started. âBut if you mean Y/N, itâs because she canât do anything halfway. She told me earlier that itâs because she doesnât want to start over with someone new, but I donât think thatâs it. She just loves so hard, and it takes a lot out of her. Why would she wanna start the process all over again if she already has someone?â Bradley was incredulous. âErm, I donât know, maybe because heâs emotionally abusing her.â
You and Nat were close. In a way, she knew you better than you knew yourself, so she was the best person for Bradley to ask about things. Now, however, he was kind of regretting opening his mouth. Knowing why you were staying with a guy who treated you so badly didnât make it easier to accept like Bradley thought it would; it only filled him with white-hot rage.Â
âItâs not as easy as just leaving. She has to come to it on her own.â âYeah,â Reuben chimed in. âYou canât convince Y/N of shit.â Natasha scoffed. âYup, and believe me, Iâve tried.â âSo what, we just sit around and watch him ruin her?â âY/Nâs a smart cookie and one of the strongest people I know. Sheâll come to her senses, and when she does, weâll be here.â âYou know, I read somewhere once that you canât save anyone. You can only hold their hand while they save themselves.â Nat raised a brow. âDamn, Payback. That might be the wisest thing youâve ever said.â âHey, why do you sound so surprised?â âYou really want me to answer that?â
Bradley had a lot to think about. Realistically, he knew there was nothing he could do. His only option was to let things unfold naturally and have faith that things would work out exactly the way they were supposed to. The only problem was, that sounded too much like âsit back and do nothing,â which didnât feel right either.Â
Bradley needed another drink.Â
In fact, he was just about to head to the bar when you came bounding over, dragging poor Bob behind you.Â
âRoooooooooster.â You cooed.
His heart just about melted when you started batting your eyelashes at him.Â
âWhatâs up, Y/CS?â
Everyone else was watching the interaction expectantly, waiting to hear what you were going to say next.Â
âYouâre really pretty.â Bradley laughed, hoping you were too drunk to notice the blush he could feel creeping across his cheeks. âThank you. Youâre really pretty, too.â Nat, sensing the need to intervene, came around and gently grabbed your arm. âHey, letâs get you a glass of water, huh?â âBut I need to tell Roo how pretty he looks.â
Bradleyâs heart fluttered at your use of the pet name. He really didnât want you to leave, but Nat was right. You needed some water and probably your bed.Â
âYou told him already, Y/N. And when you get back, you can tell him again.â
She started leading you away, and Bradley immediately missed your presence.Â
A very flushed-looking Bob took Natâs empty stool. âThat girl is somethinâ else.â He murmured, pushing his glasses back up his nose. âI donât think you should let her drink anymore.â âIâm not her keeper,â Bradley responded. âCanât stop her from doing anything.â Bob shrugged. âMaybe so, but youâre all she talked about. You and the fact that thereâs no Fall Out Boy in the jukebox. Pretty sure she called it a âfucking tragedy.ââ Bradley leaned forward. âWhat did she say about me?â âYou know,â Bob waved a hand dismissively. âYouâre pretty. Her boyfriend is gonna kill her if he finds out sheâs here with you because he thinks you have a thing for her.â Bradley was at a loss for words. Reuben, however, was grinning like a fool. âWhat was that about not having a thing for her? Even her boyfriendâs caught on, man.â âHow many times do I have to say I do not have a thing for-â
An annoyingly loud ringing sound interrupted Bradleyâs sentence. It didnât sound like his ringtone, but the noise was coming from his pocket. It took him too long to remember that he had your phone in his pocket, and that it was probably Viper calling. Sure enough, when he took out your phone, he was greeted by a sickeningly sweet photo of you and your boyfriend on the beach. You and Nat were still at the bar, and he knew he should just let it ring so you could call him back later.Â
But something had a hold of Bradley, and he answered the call and pressed the phone to his ear before he could really process what he was doing.Â
âY/Nâs phone.âÂ
A beat of silence, then some of the most colourful language Bradley had ever heard in his life.Â
âWho the fuck is this, and why the fuck have you got my girlfriendâs phone?â âY/N canât come to the phone right now. Sheâs at the bar with her friend, gettinâ another round of drinks, and I just know hearing your voice would ruin her night. Itâs ruined mine, thatâs for sure. If you want, I can take a message, and sheâll get back to you in the morning.â
Reuben was nearly on the floor, trying desperately not to laugh in case Viper heard him. Bob had paled significantly, like heâd seen a ghostâor worse.Â
âThat you, Bradshaw? I just knew something was going on-â
Bradley hung up. The severity of the situation was beginning to hit, and despite the sick satisfaction heâd felt when he picked up the phone, he was regretting his decision already.Â
âY/N is gonna kill you, Rooster.â Bob told him.Â
Nat made the sensible decision to cut you off, but she said you could stay out with them until closing if you promised to keep drinking water and stop fucking around with the jukebox. That was how you ended up in the corner of a booth with Bradley next to you to stop you from escaping.
Not that youâd want to escape.Â
Mickey had joined, and the guys were playing cards while you and Nat talked. She was catching you up on her life, and it made a change to think about someone other than Elijah for once.
Thatâs when it hit you.
You hadnât checked your phone in hours, and you dreaded to think how many texts and calls youâd missed.Â
âBradley, can I have my phone?â
He set his hand of cards down on the table and reached into his pocket. When you reached out to take it, he pulled away.
âBefore I give this to you, I need to tell you something.â
A wave of nausea hit you.Â
âWhat? Whatâs going on?â âViper called about an hour ago. You were at the bar, and I didnât know what to do, so I answered it.â Reuben leaned forward in his seat. âOh, this is about to be good.â
You thought you knew what panic felt like, but up until this very moment, you had no idea. Bradley was lucky you didnât throw up in his lap from the nerves.
âWhat?â âIâm sorry, Y/N. I wasnât thinking-â
You snatched your phone from him, ignoring the kicked-puppy expression he was sporting. A slew of angry text messages that were borderline abusive greeted you. You skimmed them quickly, not wanting to read too many in case you started crying in front of the entire squad.Â
What started out as the best night youâd had in a while quickly turned into the worst. Your boyfriend's hateful messages reminded you why you never went out and why this was the biggest mistake you could have made.
The worst part was you saw it coming.
âMove,â you said, grabbing your bag. âBradley, let me out now.â âYou canât drive like this, Y/N. Let one of us take you home.â
Bradley sounded destroyed. You couldnât bring yourself to look at him.Â
âMove.â
He nudged Bob, who stood up so Bradley could climb out of the booth. You were close behind him, and when your feet touched the floor, you nearly keeled over. Bradley reached out to steady you, but you shook him off.
âY/N. You canât leave like this. How are you gonna get home?â
Ignoring his pleas, you made a beeline for the exit. Nat shoved Reuben into Mickey, trying to hurry them out of the booth so she could follow you, but you were surprisingly fast for a drunk person. Bradley was right about one thing: there was no way you could drive in this state. You ducked around the corner so Nat couldnât see you and sank to the floor. Hot tears prickled behind your eyes as you did the one thing you didnât want to do, but the only thing you could do.
You called Elijah.Â
He didnât answer the first, second, third, or fourth time.Â
Half an hour passed, and you didnât move. At one point, you heard Bradley, Nat, and Reuben talking around the corner, coming up with a plan for where to look for you. They knew you were on foot because your car was still in the lot, and since youâd disappeared so quickly, you couldnât have gotten far. If the situation werenât so tragic, it wouldâve been funny that you were hiding ten paces away, and none of them could find you.Â
It was getting very late. People were getting in their cars and leaving or jumping into Ubers. Soon, your Jeep would be the only car left. You couldnât face the daggers, and you couldnât drive home, so you picked yourself up and took a slow walk down the beach to where the water met the sand.Â
What a beautiful night to have your heart broken.Â
There was no way Elijah would ever forgive you for this, no way youâd ever be able to convince him that nothing had happened between you and Bradley. The sane part of you knew that it was crazy to feel guilty for simply enjoying a night out with your friends, but the sane part of you rarely won these days. The part of you that loved Elijah was always loudest and knew this could never have gone any other way.Â
You were just about to resign yourself to calling a cab when you heard someone yelling your name from the top of the beach.Â
You either had the best or worst luck in the world because it was Bradley.Â
He made short work of the distance, giving you no time to come up with something to say. He looked otherworldly in the pale moonlight. His hair was slightly mused, and the same insane part of you that loved what it loved was whispering at you to run your fingers through it.Â
âWeâve been looking all over for you, Y/N.â He sounded very concerned as he pulled out his phone and texted the others to let them know you were safe. âIâm sorry, I just needed to be alone.â
You hadnât even realised you were shivering until Bradley draped his Levi jacket over your shoulders.Â
âYou needed to be alone, or you needed to call Viper back?â The tears threatened to make another appearance. âItâs none of your business.â âWhat makes you think itâs not my business? I care about you and donât want to keep watching you get hurt.â âThen stop watching!â
Bradley recoiled, and you immediately felt awful. How Elijah spoke to you like that day in and day out without feeling guilty was a mystery to you.Â
âIâm sorry, Bradley,â you sighed, pulling his jacket tighter around you. âI didnât mean to snap. Iâm just very drunk and very emotional right now.â
He softened immediately and seemed torn about whether he should let you stand there freezing or pull you close. You hoped he wouldnât try to pull you close because you didnât think youâd have the guts to tell him no. Good feelings had been so incredibly hard to come by as of late.
âWhy are you still with him, Y/N?â Bradley asked almost pleadingly.Â
Wow. He didnât waste any time getting right to the point.Â
âThatâs a loaded question.â âI need you to explain it to me because itâs killing me.â
You thought about it for a moment, and Bradley waited with bated breath to hear what you had to say.
In the end, it was this: âI guess we accept the love we think we deserve.âÂ
Until you said it out loud, this phrase held little meaning to you. Now that it was out in the open, it was very heavy. In the last few months youâd tried coming up with a decent explanation as to why you were staying with Elijah, and you fell short every time. Turns out all you needed to do was get drunk and have an honest conversation to figure it out.Â
Coming to the realisation that what youâd just said was true felt like being in freefall. Everything in your life was changing shape to fit around this ugly truth. The good things in your heart shied away in the face of this monstrous fact.Â
You didnât think you deserved a healthy love.Â
Somehow, Bradley was more hurt by this than when youâd snapped at him earlier. He was staring at the ground, unable to meet your eye like youâd just told him he wasnât worthy of love.
âYou donât think you deserve to be happy?â
Hearing him say it was somehow even worse.
âApparently not.â
You were both quiet for a moment, and then, for whatever reason, you laughed.Â
âThis is news to me too.â
The waves crashed loudly, water lapping at your feet as the tide came in. You couldnât stand out here having epiphanies all night.Â
âListen, Rooster, I need to go home. Iâm sorry for snapping.â âIâll take you home,â he said quietly. âBut we should talk tomorrow when youâre sober. Maybe we could get coffee.â You shook your head. âAfter tonight, I donât think thatâs a smart idea. Iâll probably be spending tomorrow trying to salvage whatâs left of my relationship.â âYouâre not serious.â âI am.â
He opened his mouth to protest but then appeared to change his mind. You watched as all the fight he had left in him dissolved. There was nothing left for him to say, and he knew it.Â
The irritating birds that constantly chirped right outside your bedroom window woke you up. It was too damn early, and your head felt as though it was splitting open. When you sat up, you were hit by a wave of nausea so strong that you had no other choice but to sprint to the bathroom, smashing into the corner of your chest of drawers on the way.Â
Which was to say, it was a bad morning.Â
After you had puked up the entire contents of your stomach, you jumped straight in the shower, brushed your teeth, and did your skincare. At least if Elijah showed up at your front door, you wouldnât look like you got super drunk last night, even though heâd probably already guessed.Â
When you checked your phone, there were still no notifications from him, and when you called, there was no answer. This wasnât unlike him, but it had been almost twelve hours since Bradley picked up your phone, and you would have thought heâd have something to say by now.Â
To distract yourself from your impending doom, you threw open all the windows in your apartment, made your bed, unloaded and reloaded the dishwasherâall the usual morning tasks. It seemed a shame to waste such a beautiful Saturday, but you doubted youâd enjoy any of your hobbies when you were this anxious and hungover.Â
With nothing else left to do, you set about making some breakfast.Â
Just as you put your bagel in the toaster, somebody knocked on the door.Â
Your stomach twisted itself into an impossibly tight knot. You were rooted to the spot, unable to move until whoever it was knocked a second time.Â
You looked through the peephole, expecting to see Elijah standing there with his dark eyebrows knitted together in frustration. It was the only scenario that had crossed your mind, so when you saw Bradley standing there, you were very surprised.Â
You took a deep breath and opened the door, greeted by the warm scent of sandalwood once again.Â
âBradley?â
He was holding two iced lattes, which you were betting were vanillaâyour favourite. Elijah hadnât done that for you since the first week of your relationship.
âHey, Y/N. Thought you could use this.â
He wasnât wrong. You ushered him inside, and he headed to the kitchen, where heÂ
perched himself on one of the stools at your kitchen island. This morning, he was sporting one of his more toned-down Hawaiian shirts and dark jeans. His eyelids drooped, and you wondered if heâd slept at all.Â
âI was just about to make bagels. Want one?â âSure, thank you.â
You busied yourself, putting bacon and eggs into a pan while he sipped his coffee. He eyed you with the curiosity of someone who had come over to check that you were all in one piece. Once he was satisfied that you were, he relaxed slightly.Â
âThank you for bringing me home last night. I really appreciate it.â You told him earnestly. âYou donât need to thank me. Youâd have done the same thing.â âTrue, but still. And Iâm sorry for snapping at you.âÂ
Last night was gradually coming back to you in flashes, like a supercut. Each time you remembered a new detail, you cringed internally.Â
âYou also donât need to apologise. Has he called you?âÂ
While the eggs and bacon were cooking, you toasted another bagel for Bradley and buttered yours. Even though youâd known him for years and been quite close until you got into a relationship, you were struggling to admit that you were pretty much being ghosted. It was already hard to walk around on base knowing that everybody was aware of how Elijah treated you. When you didnât respond, Bradley took that as a no.Â
âWell, thatâs his problem,â he spat. âYou did absolutely nothing wrong. Maybe if he were less of a control freak, you would have felt like you could tell him you were out with us rather than hiding it, and then he wouldnât have found out the way he did.â
The toaster popped, and you jumped. It felt like somebody had run a cheese grater over your nerves. Bradley ran his fingers through his hair and took a deep breath, clearly trying to reign in his anger.
âI should apologise too,â he continued. âI shouldnât have answered your phone. It was a dick move, and I regretted it the instant I did it.âÂ
You buttered the second bagel, put one egg on each of the bottom halves, and stacked two pieces of bacon on top before adding the top part. You didnât say a word the entire time, and Bradley was starting to get antsy.Â
âY/N. Please talk to me.â âI donât know what to say, Roo. Iâm struggling even to think straight right now. He knows it drives me fucking crazy when heâs having a go at me and doesnât respond. I donât understand why he does it, knowing how it makes me feel.â Bradley sighed. âBecause he doesnât give a shit how you feel. He doesnât give a shit about anything other than himself and how he feels.âÂ
This wasnât news to you, but again, it was more impactful to hear someone else say it out loud. Really, how long could you keep this up? Whether you thought you deserved it or not, you were starting to wonder if you might be better off alone than with someone who made living feel like walking next to a cliff with your eyes closed.Â
You pushed Bradleyâs plate across the counter and picked up your bagel. Eating felt impossible, but getting through the day with this headache would be excruciating if you didnât at least try.Â
âCome and sit down,â Bradley said. âItâs not good to eat standing up.â Despite everything, you managed to laugh. And this time, it was a real laugh. âWhy?â A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. âI donât know. My mum used to say it all the time.â
You did as you were told, and you walked around the island, taking the seat next to him. The two of you ate in companionable silence, periodically taking sips of your coffees. This was how easy it should have been with Elijah.Â
When you were both finished, Bradley put your plates, pan, and utensils into the dishwasher. You were too tired to tell him to stop.Â
âThanks for breakfast.â You smiled. âThanks for being you.â
Bradleyâs smile mirrored your own. Unsaid words hung in the air, but you didnât know what to say. His leaving didnât feel right, but if he stayed and Elijah made an appearance, heâd most definitely break up with you.Â
But wasnât this radio silence all the confirmation you needed that things were pretty much over, anyway? You were starting to wonder if this weekend had all happened exactly the way it was supposed to. Your eyes were indeed open, that was for sure. Of course, youâd known that the relationship wasnât healthy, but this weekend had really driven the point home.Â
âDo you wanna go for a walk along the beach?â You asked, hopefully. âWe could grab some ice cream at that little place next to the arcade.â
Bradley didnât just look happy. He also looked relieved that you werenât asking him to leave.Â
âIâd love to.â
It was a beautiful Spring day, perfect walking weather. Honestly, it was the last thing Bradley expected you to suggest, so he jumped on the idea before you could change your mind and send him home.
Because he really didnât want to go home.Â
Heâd sensed that you didnât want to talk about Viper, and youâd yet to bring up your conversation on the beach last night. Bradley was beginning to doubt that you even remembered everything you saidâall that nonsense about not deserving a healthy love. Bradley didnât take you as a liar, which meant you believed that you werenât deserving of happiness. He couldnât remember the last time heâd felt quite so sad and also angry at the same time. So many emotions were warring for the top spot in his heart, and as a result, his brain was incredibly foggy.
A walk along the beach with you was perhaps the only cure.
âDid you hear about Hangman?â Bradley assumed you hadnât. âNo?â âHeâs getting deployed. Heâs leaving next month.â âHow long is he going for?â âSix months.â You whistled lowly. âDamn.â âI know. I think heâs looking forward to it, though. I sure am.â âYou know, I donât think you hate him half as much as you say.â Bradley chuckled. âMaybe not, but being nice to him wouldnât feel right. Even after everything that happened on the mission.âÂ
The two of you walked down the beach, chit-chatting about anything that came to mind. You were about halfway to the ice cream place when your phone pinged. Bradley guessed it would be Viper, but he never could have guessed what the message said.Â
It was a photo of you and Bradley walking down the beach, taken from behind. The picture had been forwarded to you from someone else.Â
E<3: always knew you were a slut.
You inhaled sharply, obviously hurt by the words on the screen. Not two seconds later, he sent another text.Â
E<3: PS: weâre fucking over.
The two of you had stopped walking. Bradley watched over your shoulder as you furiously typed a reply and deleted it again. You turned to face him, and his heart just about broke when he saw the tears streaming down your cheeks. You didnât need to say a word. He pulled you close to him, wrapping you tightly in his arms. You stayed that way for a while, sobbing into his Hawaiian shirt as he rubbed your back soothingly. When you eventually pulled away, the first thing you did was apologise.Â
âThereâs nothing for you to be sorry for, sweet girl. Heâs the one who should be sorry.â You sniffled. âI donât know what to reply.â âLeave it for now,â he said. âWe can go get ice cream, take a slow walk back to yours. Then Iâll help you think of something.â âI donât know if I feel like ice cream anymore.â âWell, thatâs too bad because I do. Ice cream is the best remedy for heartbreak.â âDid your mum tell you that too?â âShe sure did.âÂ
It turns out Bradley was right about ice cream being the best remedy for heartbreak. The two of you sat on the wall, watching the waves while he munched on a mint chocolate chip cone and you butterscotch. It was hard to tell whether it was the best ice cream youâd ever had or if it was because you were with Bradley. If you remembered correctly, youâd had ice cream from this same place with Elijah before, and it hadnât been this nice.
Thinking back on your memories with him only made you want to cry, so you did your best to shove them to the back of your mind. Despite the fact that he was actually a very shitty person, heâd been a dream at the beginning, and that didnât just go away. The happy moments didnât just suddenly turn to ash, as much as you wished they would.Â
âWhat are your plans for the rest of the night?â Bradley asked around his ice cream cone. âI donât know, Roo. Iâm kinda working on a minute-to-minute basis right now.â Bradley nodded. âOkay, well, what would you say to junk food run and a movie night?â âWith you? âIf you want to. I just donât think itâs good for you to be alone.â âI donât want you to feel like you have to babysit me.â âIs that what you think this is?â âNo, but I donât want to be a burden. Or a charity case.â âY/N, youâre none of those things. I always want to spend time with you. Just so happens I have a good excuse today.â You frowned into your ice cream. âOkay. As long as youâre sure.âÂ
The two of you finished your ice cream and took a slow walk back to your apartment. When you got in, the first thing you noticed was a framed photograph of you and your now ex-boyfriend on the side table in the hallway. When your bottom lip started trembling, Bradley picked up the photo, put it face down, and then proceeded to run around your apartment and take down any others. It didnât feel like the same place youâd left a few hours ago. It was haunted by memories that would never look right in the light of day. Even the happiest ones from the start were tainted with the ugliness of his cruel words and actions.Â
âThis place is so depressing.â You grumbled.
Bradley stood in front of you with a stack of photos and one of Elijahâs t-shirts.Â
âItâs not. Itâs your home, Y/N. We just have to pack away his stuff and put it all in a box.â âAn ex-boyfriend box.â Bradley smiled sadly. âYeah, exactly. It might be over, and he might be a dick, but it was still a big part of your life, and itâs important to keep the memories safe in case you wanna look back on them someday.â âOr in case I wanna burn them.â âThat too.â Bradley chuckled
So you helped him gather all the mementoes from your relationship and put them in an old Dr Martens box. It all looked pretty pathetic, packed away in a shoebox.
âI found one of his hoodies and a few other things.â You called from your bedroom. âCan you grab me a bin bag from the top of the fridge?â
You heard shuffling, and then Bradley was standing in the doorway holding out the bag you requested.Â
âDamn, he doesnât even get one of the nice Trader Joe's bags?â âNo,â you giggled. âHe gets a trash bag because his stuff is trash, and heâs trash.â
You werenât really at the stage where you believed that just yet, but saying it was really satisfying, and it felt good to laugh. Fake it till you make it or whatever.Â
âWant me to give it to him tomorrow?â âThanks, but I should really be the one to do it. I havenât even texted him back.â You thought about it for a moment and then continued. âWould it be cheeky of me to ask if youâll come with me? Maybe Nat, too? I could use some moral support, and heâs less likely to make a scene if the two of you are there.â âOf course Iâll be there. I wonât say anything unless you need me to or unless he starts. I canât make that same promise for Nix, though.â âI havenât even told Nat yet,â you sighed. âI donât think I wanna talk about it right this second.â âIâll text her. Donât worry about it.â
From your spot on the floor, you looked up at Bradley. The evening sunlight was streaming in through the windows, casting an ethereal glow around him.Â
âYou should change your callsign to angel.â A look of pleasant surprise flickered across his handsome features. âWhy?â âBecause youâre literally my angel, Roo. I donât know what Iâd have done without you.â
Half an hour later, Bradley convinced you to go on a junk food run with him in the Bronco. He said tonight was a mandatory, post-breakup wallowing sesh because if you bottled up your feelings now, youâd explode later at a much more inconvenient time.Â
The two of you had been screaming along to all the classic breakup songs: All Too Well by Taylor Swift (yes, he knew all the words), Who Knew by Pink, What About Now by Daughtry⌠Heâd driven the long way to the store because you got so into it.Â
Now, as you scanned the shelves in Target, you asked: âWhat is it about screaming sad songs that makes you feel better?â âItâs cathartic,â Bradley explained. âHelps you relieve the strong feelings.â âYou know a lot about heartbreak.â âWell, Iâve had my fair share of sadness.â You froze. âThat was insensitive of me, Iâm sorry.â Bradley took the packed of Reeses Pieces from your hands so he could hold them. âCan you make me a promise?â âWhat?â You asked sceptically. âPromise youâre gonna stop apologising to me all the time. You have nothing to be sorry for.â âSorry.â You smiled sheepishly. He shook his head. âThatâs not what youâre supposed to say.â âOkay, fine,â you huffed. âI promise to stop apologising all the time.â âThank you,â Bradley said, releasing your hands reluctantly. âNow, pick out five more things.â âFive? Thereâs already five things in the basket.â âDid I ask?â âIâm gonna get fat.â âDonât be so ridiculous. Wallowing means junk food, and I donât know if youâre looking at the same basket I am, but thatâs not enough junk food.â âChrist Almighty, okay.âÂ
He helped you pick out five more things, and then you headed to check out.
âWhat movies are good for wallowing?â You asked. âWell, we have to start with a couple of sad ones and then finish with a happy one.â
The cashier told you your total, and Bradley tapped his card before you could even get yours out. You gave him a withering look.
âI wouldâve paid for that. You paid for the ice cream.â âSo?â âSo we should take it in turns.â
Obviously, he carried the bags as well, and as you walked back to the Bronco, he couldnât help but wonder if Viper made you take it in turns. If you were his girl, youâd never have to tap your card.
âWhatâs your favourite sad movie?â He inquired. You opened the trunk for him so he could put the bags in. âTechnically, itâs not a sad movie. But thereâs this part in Inside OutâŚWait, have you watched it before? I donât wanna spoil it for you.â âThe part where Bing Bong gets forgotten?â You gasped. âHow did you know?â âBecause it gets me every single time.â
The way you looked at him in that moment, like he had hung the moon in the skyâGod, it was too much.Â
âWeâll start with Inside Out,â he told you, opening the passenger door so you could climb in. âAnd then weâll think of something else.â
Without giving much thought to what he was doing, Bradley found himself buckling your seatbelt for you. You were holding your breath, and it dawned on him how easy it would be to kiss you if he were that sort of guy.
And as much as he wanted to kiss you, he was not that sort of guy. He wasnât about to take advantage of the fact that some asshole had just taken a sledgehammer to your very beautiful heart.Â
âCan we watch Bridge To Terabithia?â You whispered.
Bradley hadnât moved, and you were so close that he could feel your warm breath on his cheek.Â
âAre you trying to break my heart, Y/N?â âYes. I want you to feel my pain.âÂ
He was grinning the whole way around the car to the driverâs side and still grinning when he got in the car. You already had his phone in your hand, searching for more sad songs so you could continue your car concert on the way back to your apartment. He drove the long way again so the two of you could finish your rendition of âI Donât Love Youâ by My Chemical Romance, which Bradley didnât know the words to. He tried his best, though, because you seemed to love it, and he couldnât deny you anything.Â
By the time you got home, the sun had almost entirely set. While he set the snacks out on the coffee table, you went around lighting candles and switching on fairy lights. Heâd never seen your apartment in the dark, and it was incredibly cosy. Even though it was relatively warm, you dragged all your blankets and pillows from your bed and made a little nest on the sofa. You were so adorable, it was hard to believe that someone could treat you badly.Â
If you were his girl, every night would look like thisâexcept youâd be a lot happier, and there would be no tears.Â
Halfway through Bridge To Terebitha, you fell asleep. Bradley had been trying to keep his distance despite wanting to wrap you up in his arms, yet somehowâin your sleepâyouâd ended up with your legs in his lap. Heâd frozen at first, but once he realised you were dead to the world, he allowed himself to rest his hands on your knees. Really, it was that or sit with his arms crossed, and that would be silly.Â
For the duration of the movie, his attention flickered between you and the TV. Every time he tried paying attention to what was happening, his eyes wandered back to your peaceful face. He marvelled at your astounding beauty, the delicate way your eyelashes rested against the tops of your rosy cheeks. Bradley had always admired you, and youâd been good friends for years, but what he felt in that moment was something else entirely. By the time the end credits started rolling, he knew without a doubt that heâd set whole cities ablaze to keep you warm. Feelings as rapidly growing as his should have been terrifying, but Bradley wasnât scared. Falling in love with you seemed to be as easy as wading out into a calm ocean on a warm summerâs day.Â
He knew youâd yet to learn that falling in love and staying in love should always be this easy. He knew it was going to take some time to convince you that you deserved healthy love, that the right person would never run away from you and keep turning around to make sure you were chasing them.Â
But Bradley was a patient man, and he would wait as long as he had to.
End of part one.

Bet on it ( Bradley bradshaw x reader ) part one
summary : everyone thought since they were best friend that their kids would be but after some unknown reason bradley bradshaw and y/n mitchell hated each other . after confrontation one night that leaves bradley in a dry spell well the guys make a claim and bradley's willing to bet and prove them wrong all he had to do was get into a relationship with the one person that couldn't stand him .
warning : enemies to lovers, bradley bit of a dick in the start not gonna lie , bet trope , age gap ( ten years hes 38 , she 28 ) this series is gonna be a roller coaster of emotions
They were soulmate platonic where Mav was, goose was not far behind , both mischievous , both good at what they did . best friends til the end of time even if the time was short lived . so naturally people thought it would be the same with their kids and yet they were very wrong. It was like the two were fire and ice constantly going against each other whenever they got close . there was a break she went to med school as bradley was back at top gun only for their secret feud to fire back up when she was transferred to a hospital right in san diego and of course she was able to win the hearts of the dagger squad and her turning up to the hard deck it was his worst nightmare come true . if they werenât locked in the childish back and forth it was ignoring the other existence all together which honestly their friends preferred and as aggravating as y/n mitchell could be nothing was going to dampen bradley bradshaws mood tonight. He almost floated over to his friends the moment he step into the hard deck . the smile on his face was almost cheek splitting when they all looked at him .Â
â guess who got a date with the baristaâ he flashed his dazzling smile pulling the aviator to perch on his nose .Â
â nice even for you chickenâ hangman nodded.Â
â well bagman you know i could give you some advice , i mean i guess it been a dry spellâ he shrugged taking his seat beside phoenix who rolled her eyes and called them both â disgusting pigsâ.Â
â yeah i donât need advice we both now i do well and even better than youâ .Â
â god you both ever gonna tire of the hook ups â she groaned .Â
â hey this could be best date of my life and she could be the oneâ bradley smirked.Â
Before they could even say more the door open and an excited y/n bounded towards them .Â
â i pass the interview i passed itâ she yelled excitedly.Â
â wait the internship in new york?â nat asked unsure of how to feel .Â
â yes itâs not til six month from now but in six month i will be heading to big city and studying under the greats of pediatrics â she excitedly dance in her spot barely even sparing the usually happy man in her wake.Â
âA date with hot ass woman and she leaving jesus this is my lucky dayâ rooster felt like crying he was so happy.Â
â in six month pornstache ⌠wow playing in the dog park finally worked out good jobâ she smiled only for jake to lift her up and spin her around .Â
âKnew you could do it , what i tell you this morningâ he chuckled ruffling her hair.Â
â not to doubt myself â she smiled bashfully . â shit thereâs my dad iâll be back â she giggled rushing off .Â
â or donât thatâs a good option â rooster smiled.Â
â i donât get why you donât like herâ fanboy mused .Â
â because youâll learn like i did sheâll drop you like that no reasonâ he rolled his eyes sick of his friend constantly going on about how great she was honestly he thought the same one time and well he learned his lesson .Â
â people change or maybe you done something â jake mused although he may of know more than he let on giving how close he and y/n got over the two years since she came to san diego.Â
â day that happens iâll sell my bronco â bradley scoffed. â going to the mens room if my date comes tell her iâll be out in a minuteâ .Â
She stood watching the news sinking in from excitement to straight on nerves . hoping he would show even a hint of happiness for her .Â
â itâs great news but we .. i just got you backâ he smiled uneasy .Â
â itâs only a short flight and iâll be home for holidays come on dad this is once in a lifetime opportunity iâm literally the youngest and female to be accepted on to this programme â she almost pleaded with him .Â
â how long is itâÂ
â two years with a chance to stay on in new york or head back to my residency here which i will because it will earn my spot on more paid job and more opportunities itâs only two years and i can visitâ she repeated .Â
â well i still got you for six months so i better make most of it i am proud of you but your my baby girl too ⌠penny round on me to celebrate my daughters great workâ he smiled sadly although he meant it when he said he was proud .Â
â iâll have this one with you next one with the guys â she smiled .Â
â sorry i was suppose to meet someone here and i donât think i can see him â a woman called making them turn .Â
â who you looking for honey â penny beamedÂ
â bradley bradshaw oh god i have the wrong place donât i â she chuckled .Â
â the wrong man iâd run if i was youâ another woman scoffed.Â
â you sure he was charming when i met him â the girls eyes widened .Â
â really rooster is great guy , donât listen cheryl she as bitter as those gins â y/n smiled .Â
â yeah great guy when he and hangman used me as pawn in their who can sleep with most women game , i think i was number 8 made me think i was special never felt the spark like it âÂ
â sheâs drunk really rooster is great , heâs sweet and listens to good music â y/n defended more although she didnât know why he was an ass to her all time even though he was one that hurt her all those years.
â sure look he already over there high fiving his friend â cheryl smirked as the other girl eyes narrowed before y/n could say anything the woman was barrelling over like a storm .Â
Now as bradley looked up ready to greet his date what he didnât expect was the slap across his face or the anger of a bull on her.Â
â you bastard i thought .. shit i thought one decent guy out there til that woman set me straight â she pointed over at cheryl although bradley misread it now he was pissed.Â
â whatever she said was crock of shit trust meâ he defended.Â
â so you and some guy called hangman didnât have a sleezy contest i will not be a part of delete my number asshole â was all she said before storming out the bar completely .Â
â she has got some nerveâ was all bradley said before he storming towards the bar only he wasnât going for the right person .Â
â what the hell is your problem what me being happy isnât good enough you have to ruin it â he pulled y/n around as she almost looked shocked.Â
â i didnât ⌠i didnât do anythingâ she stuttered out completely confused.Â
â yeah you told her about stupid game me and hangman had ⌠do you really like ruining things for me i mean life was great til you showed up here making everyone think your some little sweetheart when in actuality yourâre a cold hearted bitchâ he scoffed.Â
â and you said he was a great guyâ cheryl laughed .Â
â i guess i was wrong, drop dead rooster â y/n walked off ignoring everyoneâs calls .Â
â shit that girl defended you after i told your date what your really like jesus thanks for proving me rightâcheryl saunter off playing her bill and leaving .Â
â wait wait what â he froze .Â
â rooster what the hell .. you two used to love each other now god your at each others throat but never like that ...  i thought you were better than that .. godson or not you talk to her like that again weâre gonna have problems â mav warned as he headed out the door . leaving bradley looking like biggest dickhead in the hard deck head low and tail between his legs he headed back to the table the guys were bar nat and jake who probably fixing his fuck up .Â
â wow harsh manâ payback whistled lowly .Â
â yeah not my finest moment â he grumbled .Â
That sentence was like a mantra on his tongue hell he didnât want to admit it the dry spell he was having which after his outburst completely extended it first couple of week no girl would even look his way hitting another bust as he headed back to the rest of his squad as y/n sat with jake as far as she could barely even looking his way til she ended up smiling at her phone and bidding the rest a farewell , he didnât want to admit it but the complete freeze out was worse than before the fact she didnât even give him a second thought was driving him crazy maybe the dry spell was affecting him more than he thought .Â
â guess it was a bustâ fanboy smirked.Â
â losing your status roosterâ javy laughed ,Â
â maybe it for the best between him and hangman they going to sleep through san diego or that was caseâ bob chuckled .Â
â now what i would love to see is either of them try a relationship they would fold the second things get seriousâ payback pointed out .Â
â ok first ouch bob iâm nothing like bagman and second i could do serious relationship with any girl â he stood hand on hips .Â
â not any girl â bob mused .Â
â baby on board is right not any girl â jake leaned against the pool table maybe it was a risk and shit if it ended badly well he would hate it but he could see it , he could see it the moment she walked into the hard deck two years ago .Â
â iâd bet my bronco on it â bradley stood falling into the trap hook line and sinker .Â
â you sure you wanna bet on something youâll lose chicken ?â he goaded willing him to take the bait .Â
â fuck it your on bagman name her , point her outâ he stood toe to toe with the man .Â
â easy y/n â that damn smile , the cocky one rooster loved to wipe of his face and yet this one was gonna be tough shit did he have it in him. â you really are a chicken on it â he had him hook , line Â
â your on â sinker .

Calling Top Gun Maverick characters âwife/husbandâ instead of âgirlfriend/boyfriendâ while being on the phone with someone
Pete âMaverickâ Mitchell
Maverick would give you a subtle, knowing smirk, his eyes glinting with amusement
Heâd raise an eyebrow slightly, intrigued by your choice of words
Once youâre off the phone, Maverick might tease you lightly, âHusband, huh? You sure youâre ready for that?â
Heâd give you a gentle nudge or a squeeze of the hand, clearly pleased
Youâd catch him smiling warmly, clearly touched by the unexpected title
Maverick wouldnât say much but would give you a look that says heâs very okay with it
He might add it to your banter, occasionally calling you his âhusbandâ or âwifeâ in return
Penny Benjamin
Penny would immediately flash you a cheeky grin, loving the new title
Sheâd give you a playful wink, clearly enjoying the unexpected upgrade
Once youâre off the phone, Penny might tease you with, âI like the sound of thatâ
Sheâd laugh softly to herself, obviously delighted by your words
Penny would reach out to touch your arm or hand, appreciating the sentiment
Sheâd respond with a playful flirt, something like, âDoes that mean weâre planning a wedding now?â
Penny would likely pull you in for a quick kiss, happy and amused by the title
Jake âHangmanâ Seresin
Hangman would immediately react with a wide, cocky grin, loving every second of it
Heâd throw a quick, witty retort your way, âI knew I was husband material.â
Hangman would puff up his chest a little, clearly proud of the title
Once youâre off the phone, heâd tease you relentlessly, âSo whenâs the ceremony?â
Heâd respond with a flirtatious comment, something like, âIâll give you a great husband.â
Hangman would give you a charming wink, fully embracing the term
He might make a sly comment about you having good taste in husbands
Bradley âRoosterâ Bradshaw
Rooster would get a bit flustered, not quite sure how to react at first
Heâd break into a surprised but happy smile, loving the unexpected term
Rooster would chuckle nervously to himself, a little embarrassed but clearly pleased
He might blush slightly, especially if youâre in front of others, but heâd still love it
Once youâre off the phone, he might say softly, âHusband, huh? I like that.â
Rooster might gently tease you about it later, âSo, how long have we been married now?â
Heâd give you a long, affectionate look, clearly touched by the sentiment
Natasha âPheonixâ Trace
Phoenix would immediately laugh, clearly amused and delighted by your words
She might give you a light, playful punch on the arm, âWife? I like the sound of that.â
Phoenix might feign surprise, âWow, didnât know we were that official.â
Sheâd grin at you teasingly, loving the playful nature of the title
Once youâre off the phone, sheâd quickly retort with, âGuess that makes you my wife/husband, huh?â
Phoenix would likely continue the banter, throwing in some flirtatious remarks
Sheâd clearly be happy with the title, maybe bringing it up later with a smile
Robert âBobâ Floyd
Bob would be stunned into silence for a moment, not quite sure how to react
His face would turn bright red, clearly flustered but pleased by the title
Bob would give you a shy, sweet smile, loving the idea but too shy to say much
Heâd let out a nervous laugh, trying to play it cool but clearly a bit overwhelmed
Once youâre off the phone, Bob might say timidly, âHusband? I, um, didnât know we were there yet.â
Heâd give you a grateful, affectionate look, touched by the unexpected upgrade
Bob might make a soft comment about how much he likes the sound of it
Mickey âFanboyâ Garcia
Fanboy would instantly get excited, his eyes lighting up at the word âhusband.â
Heâd immediately start playfully joking, âSo when are we booking the honeymoon?â
Fanboy would break into a big grin, clearly loving the idea
Once youâre off the phone, heâd be full of energy, âHusband! I knew it! Weâre that good!â
He might go over-the-top with his reaction, acting like youâve just proposed
Fanboy would be laughing joyfully, clearly thrilled with the new title
Heâd constantly tease you about it afterward, bringing it up at every opportunity

It's on one such run that you come face to face with members of the infamous Dagger Gang; a group of, admittedly handsome, men who steal from the banks to hand it back out to the poor. Coyote: Screw you too hangman. ________________________________ In which 12 daggers, the best of the best of naval aviators, are all a bunch of kids and thrown in a group chat.
come fly with me (let's fly, let's fly away) by GatheringBlue â (TGM x 9-1-1 Crossover)
It's a common misconception that Buck trained to be a Navy SEAL. For as long as he could remember, flying had been his dream. Most little kids wanted to be a firefighter or an astronaut, but Buck had always wanted to be a pilot. He wanted to fly far, far away from home, where his parentsâ comments that might as well have been slaps for how badly they stung couldnât get to him. Flying was his way out. His escape. If he was thousands of feet up in the sky, way up with the clouds, then his parents couldnât touch him. No one could. When Buck got pulled from the reserves just after the lawsuit, it seemed like perfect timing. There was nothing left for him in LA. Not anymore. So, it looked like Buck was heading back to Top Gun.

dogfighting 101: 05 - sugar and spice
wc: 1.6k
synopsis: hangman leaves everyone hanging... right?
main masterlist
athena-verse master post
a/n: absolutely loving all of your comments!! heres some hangman and then centric stuff which I KNOW people are waiting to see more of. the next update will be the final for dogfighting 101 but will feature an interaction between rooster and athena that probably (very honestly) wont answer your questions (yet)
âHowdy Miss âThena,â is Hangmanâs opening as you both enter the range.
âHangman,â your greetingâs lacking a little luster.
Despite your early success, youâd only managed tone once and this was rotation four for you, and thatâs not even taking into account the variations in which you werenât flying and that no one else had managed to take your dad down yet.
Your arms hurt, your shoulders hurt, your back hurt, and you wanted to shower so incredibly bad. More than all of that though, you were emotionally exhausted. Flying with Bradley had been the gift that kept giving because even though youâd already gone through another rotation, you kept thinking about the blow out, about the before, about Bradley. As you stood on the tarmac again, you took in the little indents in your palms from the gravel being pushed into them during your push-ups, rubbing over one red mark and shaking your head. Safe to say, you could not wait to finish out the final few rotations, and then go home.
âWhatâs the matter, Honey?â the tease comes over the comms and even though you know he wants an answer all you can do is scoff.
âGetting tired of push-ups is all,â you say simply.
âI was hoping so,â Jake decides and your brow furrows. You donât need to see him to know he was planning something.
âWhat are you planning?â you ask seriously, fully aware that your dad and the rest of the detachment was listening in.
âI was wondering, are you still made of sugar and spice and everything nice?â it sounds condescending, and youâre sure Phoenix and Halo are scoffing at the question, but you know better.
Sugar and Spice was a code, a reference to something youâd only ever talked through with Jake during some downtime on the carrier. Unlike Rock and Roll which youâd actually trained for with Harvard and Yale during Top Gun, Sugar and Spice was completely theoretical.
âYouâre joking,â you deadpan, turning to glare at him through the canopy.
âYou said you were tired of push-ups. I think it could work, especially since two highly decorated and competent aviators came up with it. Unless, of course, youâd rather continue the heavy set arm day youâve got going on?â he says nonchalantly.
âWhy does it feel like you called me a coward while also complementing me?â you scoff.
âBecause you know me,â is all he offers.
âThatâs a lot of chatter for two aviators who donât have the bandit in their sights,â Maverickâs voice finally cuts through, interrupting your back and forth with Jake.
âHangman, you got eyes?â you ask staring around and out the canopy after confirming your dad wasnât on the radar.
âNo, my guess is heâs coming from below the hard deck again,â the other aviator offers and you do a quick roll, inverting like you had on the first run.
âNo contact,â you huff, rolling back.
And then all of a sudden you hear a boom and Mav comes zipping down in front of you. Breaking the sound barrier as he drops from where heâd been miles above you and Jake moving faster than youâd anticipated.
âHoly shit!â you shout.
âOh fuck!â Jakeâs curse echoes with yours.
âFightâs on, Aviators, letâs see how your arms feel after, kid,â your dad teases as he circles around.
âBreak left!â Hangmanâs shout echoes.
And you do.
You break left and loop around, looking for Jake whoâd gone int he opposite direction. He hadnât ditched you, yet. Not like he had with Phoenix and Bob earlier. You know itâs not entirely fair a line of thought though, he was different with you, heâd yet to break a promise or leave you out to dry, not like he so flippantly seemed to be with everyone else. You hesitate a second longer before deciding, no, I do not want to do more push ups, and yes, I do trust Jake.
âSugar and Spice,â you finally shout.
âWait, really?â the surprise is evident, as if despite his cocky attitude he couldnât believe you were agreeing.
âYes!â you confirm, rolling your eyes. âNow move your ass, Hangman!â
âMy fine ass, you mean,â he shouts back and you can hear the smirk as he loops back to meet you so you could assume the correct positions.
Itâs tricky, you decide.
You always knew it would be, but you never thought youâd actually try it out. In theory, Sugar and Spice was supposed to create a gap that was a trap for the bandit. Where Rock and Roll was a distraction and attack, with each aviator having a specific goal, Sugar and Spice held more risk. Here both pilots act as the distraction, while attempting to get tone at the same time. When youâd initially talked it out with Jake there were three possible formations. Option A was the Side by Side, where you fly parallel. Option B was the Stack, where one pilot flies directly above the other. And Option C, which you had succinctly named, the collision course; in which one approaches from the tail of the bandit, and the other nose.
It seemed Jake had decided to run the collision course. It took a few maneuvers, some creative flying in order to lure Maverick into the right space at the right time, but then you were approaching form his nose, while Jake came in from the tail.
âWhat the fuck?â was your dads response when he realized that he had to make a choice, continue to attempt tone on you, move before Jake got tone on him, or move before you got close enough to get tone on him.
He feigned a left, which you followed, but then he made a sharp turn right.
What Mav didnât anticipate was the height change. Jake had moved up, just enough to angle himself perfectly, and to ensure that if your dad didnât move from the game of chicken you were playing with him, you wouldnât just crash into your own teammate.
When Maverick flipped a hard right, probably hoping to get tone on you, Jake got tone first, having seen the move coming, and prepared accordingly.
It was silent for a moment, as the tone rang out.
âWell Iâll be damned,â Maverickâs voice crackles over the comms as if he hadnât meant to say it out loud.
When you land Hangmanâs already on the ground by your ladder, having rushed out of his jet after landing first.
Youâre not even all the way down when his arms wrap around you and he pulls you down, âHoly shit, âThena, that was fucking incredible!â he shouts, squeezing you for just a moment.
This is Jake, you think fondly. You liked Jake, a lot. You liked him a hell of a lot more than Hangman. Unfortunately, you knew that not everyone got to meet Jake, and that, you decided was a god damned shame.
âI mean, I always knew you were smart, âThee but this idea really was something else entirely! And getting to test it out, Iâm fucking ecstatic the height change workedâŚ.â he was rambling, and there was this twinkle in his eyes that made the green seem alive.
You hadnât seen him ramble since before the announcement of the detachment, honestly not for a while if youâre honest. Maybe the last time youâd both had feet on solid ground instead of an Air Craft Carrier in the middle of the Pacific. He seemed younger, the southern drawl more evident as he talked too fast to fully enunciate each word.
âSeresin! Mitchell!â the shout from your dad forces Jake to stop, and you notice as his brain finally catches up, how he steps back from you and straightens out, how the excited gleam in his eye dies out a bit, and you frown at Jake, because you watch as he tucks the more authentic parts of himself away.
âYes, Sir?â you ask, turning to your father who was approaching.
âHell of a move, whereâd you learn that?â he asks, looking between the two of you.
âLieutenant Mitchell designed it, Sir. After a cat and mouse training exercise on the carrier between our squads,â and if your dad was shocked before, hearing Hangman of all people pay another pilot credit was the blackout on top of the bingo.
âIt was a team effort, Sir,â you argue. âThen and now, I honestly wouldnât have been able to do it with anyone else,â you admit, and something in both your fatherâs gaze, and Jakeâs softens.
âKeep thinking outside the box. Itâs a good skill, and youâll need it,â your father praises you, before turning to head to Hondo for his push ups, giving the next group a bit of a break.
âHey Maverick!â you shout after him, âAlways think the 360!â
A random sentence that no one else would understand, but he would, and based off of the near prideful smile he shoots you before turning back around, you know he understood.
While your dad did his push ups and the next pairing came down, you stopped in an empty hallway. âHey, Jake?â
âYeah?â he asks, pausing and then turning back once he realized you were no longer right beside him.
âIâm happy it worked too. Thanks for not leaving me hanging,â you say softly.
He looks down and then back at you, brows furrowed as if something wasnât adding up for him, âMitchell, you should know by now, Iâd never leave you,â he says in response, green eyes swirling with emotion, too many to place, but his words feel like so much more than just talking as your wingman.

Summary: When you need someone to be your fake boyfriend to get you out of a situation with your ex, Hangman is the closest guy you find. What needed to be a one time thing, turned out into a long term act of fake dating. Certainly now that your dad Iceman is involved in as well. Slowly the lines of fake dating fade as Hangman becomes obessed with you, a ray of sunshine. When your ex tries to get back in your life, Jake becomes protective, finally ending those unclear lines of fake dating.
Phoenix and you entered Pennyâs bar when your phone suddenly rang. Taking it out, the nametag on it made your eyes widen. You touched Phoenix on her shoulder, letting her know you needed a moment. She simply smiled, heading further into the bar to the booth were Bob, Coyote and Fanboy already were. The phone kept buzzing as you werenât sure what to do. Panicking a bit as to say. You knew not picking up, would do nothing as he would just keep calling you.
Answering was even terrible, as you knew heâd say anything to get you to yield. Like a collective caller, kept he calling you. Looking around frantically, you spotted the first person at Pennyâs bar. You rushed over to the bar, pulling Hangman back by his shoulder. â âEmergency, youâre my boyfriend.â â you breathed out, holding the phone out to him. Hangman smiled cocky. â âWell, well. If you were desperate for a kiss, youâd just had to ask Y/n.â â Hangman replied all smug to your annoyance.
âNo. No! Youâre not actually my boyfriend.â â you informed him hastily. Hangman furrowed his brows, frowning. â âMake up your mind girl.â â he let out confused to what was happening. You moved your phone higher up for him to notice. â âI need you to be my boyfriend and make him stop calling me!â â you called out almost frantically at how slow he was catching up.
âRight.â â He simply said, setting a beer down and taking your phone in his hand. He answered the phone, giving you a cheeky eyebrow wiggle. Hangman didnât even listen to what the other person was saying on the phone. â âListen bud, stop calling my girlfriend.â â he spoke through. He heard an immediate response. â âUhm her boyfriend.â â Hangman answered, showing you a goofy look at how obvious it was who he was talking to.
The man kept blabbing in his ear as Hangman had little interest in keeping him on the phone. â âStop calling us, bye.â â he spoke in such a manufactured voice, he could work in sales and be dealing with a terrible customer but still upholding his work voice. Hangman hung up, giving you the phone back. â âThank you!â â you let out relieved, bending a bit through your knees out of gratitude. â âSo what do I get in return?â â Hangman asked.
âThis beer?â â you suggested, placing your hand on the counter by it. Hangman tsked his tongue. â âAlready paid for it sunshine.â â he said with a chuckle. â âFine.â â you breathed out. â âIâll clean your locker.â â you took out another suggestion as Hangman thought. â âHow about wash my clothes?â â he responded. â âDeal.â â you agreed it was just that. Hangman shook hands with you to seal the deal.
He picked up his beer, throwing his arm over your shoulder. â âWho was the dude anyways?â â he asked, leading you to the others. â âMy ex.â â you sighed out. Hangman looked half in shock at you. â âI didnât know you dated someone.â â he called out as you had to shush his loud voice. â âIt was like 6 months ago.â â you informed him.
âAnd heâs still calling you?â â Hangman blurted out as you hummed with a nod as response. â âI canât shake him off.â â you sighed out nearing the booth with your friends. â âWell good thing your boyfriend saved the day.â â Hangman winked with a ridiculous smile. â âNot my boyfriend.â â you reminded him before sitting down.
Back in the locker room, you were washing Hangmanâs attire. Washing them by hand as he called them delicate and needed to be handled with care. â âUhm what are you doing?â â Phoenix asked seeing you in the locker room as she had walked by. â âAre those Hangmanâs clothing?â â she pointed out when you had pulled it up to see if it was clean enough, revealing his nametag. â âPhoenix!â â you called out startled, splashing some water as your arms lowered immediately. â âWhy are you washing his clothes?â â she wanted to know. â âI owe it to him.â â you responded, scrubbing his pilot gear.
âYou dared to bet with Hangman. Bold.â â she answered impressed. â âItâs not that.â â you told her with a soft sigh. â âHe did something for me, so I have to return the favour.â â you explained. â âRight.â â Phoenix widened her eyes briefly in delight. â âIf your dad could see you know.â â she chuckled a bit. â âHeâd flip that you fell so low.â You grunted soft. â âGood thing my dad.â â you emphasized. â âCanât see me.â â you replied bitsy. â âOhh cold touch.â â Phoenix teased touching her own shoulder. You scooped up some water, splashing it at her to wipe that smile off her face.
Phoenix screamed, dodging away when the water came her way. Half laughing, you teasing her with another scoop as she already darted away. When you were finished up with Hangmanâs uniforms, you hung them neatly to dry. You came out of the lockers, making your way out of the hangar when you got pulled aside by Rooster. He pushed you firm up against the wall. â âAre you dating Hangman?â â called out at the brink of losing his mind. â âWhat?â â you responded confused.
âAre you dating him?â â Rooster wanted to know with a stern look. â âWhat, no, noâŚâ â you replied waving your hands across. Rooster exhaled deep moving his fingers through his hair. â âWho told you this?â â you asked curious. â âHangman has been bragging to everyone heâs dating you.â â Rooster let you know. Your eyes widened with shock.
You pushed Rooster a bit back, to make some room for you to leave. You needed to find Hangman and you needed to find him now. Jogging out of the hangar into the open. You saw a group of people near the F16âs going over to them. The closer you got, the clearer you saw Hangman amongst them.
âHangman!â â you shouted drawing his attention. â âLooks like my girlfriend needs me.â â he said to Fanboy and Coyote all smug. Coyote rolled with his eyes as Fanboy shook his head. Hangman turned round to you, welcoming you with a warm smile. â âYes my love.â â he said as you grabbed him firmly by the arm, dragging him away from the others. â âSo eager.â â Hangman whispered to his friends with a chuckle. You came to a stop, letting harshly go of him.
âWhat are you doing?â â you called out giving him a little shove. â âAu.â â Jake mouthed pretending to be hurt from your shove. â âJake!â â you called out wanting an answer out of him. â âWhat?â â he replied loud, making himself taller. â âWhy are you telling everyone we are dating?â â you freaked out. Jake scoffed loud, turning his head away. â âAre we not?â â he answered cocky, wanting to slip his arm over your shoulder. It made you puff annoyed, crossing your arms.
âOh come on Y/n, donât be such a baby about it.â â Jake said taking you by the elbow, wanting you to uncross your arms. â âItâs a joke, sunshine.â â he kept tugging at your arm, trying to be smooth and cool at the same time. â âSunshine!â â you suddenly heard loud, making you straighten your back. Hangmanâs back straightened as well. Cyclone appeared coming to you. â âIceman wants to speak to you.â â he said firmly, making your shoulders slouch. Jake was snickering quietly at you with a little point. â âHe asked for both of you!â â Cyclone made clear, making Jakeâs smile drop.
You tugged on his elbow, pulling him with you. Following Cyclone inside and up the stairs to Icemanâs desk. Cyclone knocked on the door, before popping his head inside. â âThey are present.â â he said to Iceman. Cyclone stepped aside, expression flat as he allowed you to walk in. â âTell me, am I hanging?â â Jake whispered to Cyclone wanting to know his outcome. Cyclone ignored him, giving him an extra shove into the room. â âDad!â â you said with mixed expectations, opening your arms to a hug.
Iceman got up from behind his desk, coming to hug you. â âHow is my little girl?â â he asked. â âFlying and thriving.â â you told him, making him form a smile on his lips. His gaze then shifted to Jake, who swallowed nervously. Iceman got all serious. He went to sit again, gesturing for you to sit as well. Jake and you sat down, unsure what to expect. â âSo you are the one dating my daughter.â â Iceman spoke. â âDad noâŚâ â you blurted out, waving your hands across.
Iceman observed Hangman closely as it made him move uncomfortable in the chair. â âHowâs his flying?â â he asked. â âSuperb⌠sir.â â Jake replied loudly, humbling himself immediately. Iceman glanced your way. You could only smile sheepishly at him. â âIâm a bit saddened you didnât tell me Y/n.â â Iceman began. â âBut he looks decent enough. As long as he doesnât hurt you⌠or elseâŚâ â Iceman gave Hangman his death stare.
Jake swallowed again. â âDad weâre notâŚâ â you began wanting to explain as Jake grabbed your hand out of the blue. â âNo, no sunshine, itâs okay. He knows now.â â Jake spoke upholding the image of dating. You stared confused at him, why he would even want to go on with his stupid joke. â âJake, this is my dad.â â you said between clenched teeth to him. Making it clear that he didnât need to mess around. â âIâm so happy for you Y/n.â â Iceman said cheery.
âThe manâs happy Y/n, let him be.â â Jake said to guilt trip you. You sighed soft letting yourself fall back in the chair. Jake got up. â âWell it was nice of you to call us in, sir.â â Jake said, nudging you to get up as well. Your dad chuckled happily at his manners as you could only roll your eyes. Jake extended his hand out to Iceman. Iceman took it to shake. â âIâm not one for favours, but if you ever need one for my daughter.â â he whispered to Jake with a wink.
Jake breathed out a laugh of surprise, glancing your way. Just to rub his it more in your face. â âNow we must really go.â â Hangman spoke tapping your elbow, to get you to follow. â âGive her a kiss.â â Iceman replied. Jakeâs expression dropped. â âSâcuse me?â â he blurted out. â âGive her a kiss.â â he repeated gesturing at you.
Jake looked sheepishly at you, chuckling nervously. â âSir trulyâŚâ â Jake began wanting to talk his way out of it. â âI want to see just how much you care for my daughter.â â Iceman persisted. Hangman took your hand, pulling you closer to give a kiss on the cheek. â âGive her a real kiss!â â Iceman shouted out of good sports. Jake sighed loud with a soft drop of his gaze. You raised your eyebrow at him, curious to see what he would do. He took you by the elbow, pulling you even closer.
âJust a quick one.â â he whispered to you. â âOne second.â â you responded. Hangman held his finger up to his lips, looking all smug. He lowered his finger, giving you a quick nod before heâd kiss you. Your lips touched for a split second, pulling away quick. Iceman shook his head with disappointment. â âWe have to go dad!â â you called out, opening the door. Dragging Jake with you out of his office. Downstairs, you let go of Jake.
âYour joke just escalated Hangman. Now my dad knows!â â you called out panicking. â âHey you asked me to be your boyfriend.â â Jake replied loud. â âFor like a few seconds.â â you shouted back. â âYou asked for this Y/n.â - Â Jake answered loud taking off. â âWhere are you going?â â you called out to him. Jake turned around, pulling his shoulders up. It made you groan loud. Â
Phoenix and you were stretching before exercise. â âBoyfriend coming over.â â she pointed out, turning her torso, holding her arm by her elbow. You looked up seeing Hangman come over with the other boys. It made you look at her with a certain glance. Phoenix stopped, walking off when Hangman came near. She joined the others behind him. â âYou know for a sunshine, you frown a lot.â â he pointed out, touching your forehead.
You slapped his hand away. He grabbed you by the shoulders, moving his head closer to you. â âSmile, your dad is going to watch.â â he whispered making you widen your eyes. Jake moved aside from you, throwing his arm over you as he led you to the others. Maverick, Cyclone and Iceman neared. You all followed Maverick to the beach for a match of rugby. A good team exercise Maverick would call it. Cyclone and Iceman sat down, watching the pathetic play of rugby.
Hangman and you were on opposite teams. Fanboy had the ball, throwing it at Coyote. Hangman jumped in front of him, catching the football before his eyes. He then ran with it to your side, throwing his hard on the ground. He called it out in victory, pointing towards Iceman. Iceman clapped for Hangmanâs score. He then looked all smug at you. Phoenix nudged you as you rolled your eyes at him. Trying not to find it sweet. Rooster caught the ball wanting to throw it at you. You caught it, wanting to run when you got picked up from the ground.Â
Hangman had picked you up, making you squeal loud out of surprise. Your feet hit the ground again, as he kept his arms around you. â âTry getting out of this now, sunshine.â â he breathed out. You wriggled in his grip for freedom. When you werenât getting any, you tried running. Hangman laughed loud, squeezing his arms tighter around you. â âWhere are you going sunshine?â â he laughed out. You tried so hard not to laugh as well, not to enjoy it too, but you failed.
You stopped trying to run, laughing loud. You tossed the football over to Bob. You showed him your empty hands, showing him his attempt to stop you failed. Hangman picked you up in response, making you squeal again. He then pressed a kiss on your cheek so quick, he barely caught himself doing it. You turned round in his embrace, staring a bit at him. Jake stared back at you.
Swallowing, he let go of you, scratching his neck sheepishly. You looked blissful away. The two of you hesitantly got back into the game, questioning whether you were actually starting to like each other or that it was the drive of fake dating for a while now.
After practise, you were all exhausted. Having been playing till the sun had set. Worn out, you all decided to grab a few drinks at Pennyâs bar. You went up to her bar as Jake followed. Almost instinctively. You held four fingers up to Penny, ordering beer. Jake leaned with his elbows on the counter, throwing you a smug smile. Your phone vibrated in your pocket. Confused, you pulled it out holding it to the front. Jakeâs eye fell on the caller, taking the phone from your hand before you could react.
He picked up, turning around to lean against the counter with his back. â âWhat do you want?â â he said bothered. Your ex didnât even have to finish his sentence when Jake spoke again. â âListen asshole, if you call her one more time. Iâll make sure youâll never see daylight again. You wonât see me coming. Iâll fly above your house, aiming for your pathetic bedroom and youâll be burned to crisps in a matter of seconds.â â Jake threatened making you stare in shock at him.
âShe doesnât want you cause Iâm her boyfriend. Sheâs mine and let me tell you ass, I donât like sharing.â â Jake said over the phone. â âThis was your last call or youâre dead!â â he angrily hung up the phone. â âThank⌠thank youâŚâ â you said astonished by how hot that was. Jake tugged your phone in his pocket.
Penny arrived with the drinks as he took them, motioning with his head for you to follow. You slid into a booth with him as the others were waiting. Hangman threw an arm over your shoulder, pushing you closer to him. It made you feel like squealing. The lines of pretend and real blurring away. Jake caught you staring at him, melting as he saw you smile like the sun back at him. He moved his head closer to you, wanting to kiss you in that moment, but caught himself just in time.
He shifted his head to the side, kissing your cheek instead. It didnât feel satisfying, but he wouldnât dare himself to kiss you out of the blue with everyone around. Your friends were so used to the two of you dating, they hardly had any eye for it. Not clear it was all an act, started from a joke. After an hour or two, checked Jake his watch. â âIâm taking Y/n home.â â he said removing his arm from you. He got out of the booth, taking you with him.
You said goodbye to the others. Jake grabbed your hand, walking out of Pennyâs bar with you. Outside he was still holding your hand as it made you snicker soft. â âNo oneâs watching Hangman.â â you told him. Hangman looked at you with eyes full of affection. â âI know.â â he responded, pausing you. â âAre we still faking it?â â he asked catching you by surprise. Unsure, you pulled your shoulders up. That seemed to answer Hangman enough as he cupped your cheeks, kissing your lips.
The kiss was long, anticipating the moment till he could finally kiss you. His tender kiss moved to longing and desperation as his hands grabbed you tightly. You kissed him back, fully surrendering under his spell. The lines of fake dating having been shattered long ago.

You were 7 when your mother left your father, Pete Mitchell.Â
You didn't have many early memories of him. There were only the arguments with your mother, his departures on missions that left you in tears, the missed birthdays and Christmases. Itâs all youâve ever known so you were used to it and being a child, you found it normal.
You were 7 when your mother decided to move out, leaving your whole life behind. You remember crying your eyes out in protest. As your mom tried desperately to get you out of the house, you clung with all your might to Bradley. Bradley Bradshaw was 15 and your regular babysitter, though your mother thought of him as a son, Carole and her were really close. They liked to remind you that when you were 4, you proudly announced that you were going to marry him. Bradley was almost always around, and Pete was his godfather, and they had a bond you envied. Despite the eight-year age difference, you remember being very close to your "Bradbrad" . He never pushed you away, was always ready to play Lego or other board games with you. He even took you to the park or with him when he went to the theater with his friends - when the movies were kids friendly -.
You were 7 , and your whole world shattered. No more Bradley, no more hanging to the naval base to have a glimpse of your dad and his incredible plane, no more aunty Carole and her sweet singing. You had hated your mom for years before understanding you left for the best. She was finally happy ; not completely, she missed her friends and sometimes your father, but you could feel that she was happier away from the hustle and bustle of the navy, of your dad. You were not used to the strange calmness of the city, but your grandparents made it easy to adapt. Soon enough, you got used to the loving cocoon your mother succeeded to create around you.
You were 16, at your mother's funeral, when you had to accept the fact that you had to go back to live with Pete. When the two of you finally found each other in the crowd, he didn't say much, just gave you a few brief updates. You asked him about Bradley, a bit sad to not have seen him here, and he didn't have much to say. Only that the two of them were no longer as close as they had been.
The silence between you was uncomfortable.Â
Of course, Pete had kept in touch over the years, calling on your birthdays, sending a little something. You spent some Christmas with him when he wasn't working and a few days during the summer break ; but Pete Mitchell loved his work too much to focus on you. As long as you lived with your mother, Pete's absence from your life wasn't something you suffered from, at least not really.Â
You were used to it. Used to the absence, used to the missed calls, used to the Christmases with the attention of other aviators and their families but the ignorance of your dad, used to the unanswered phone calls. Used to his silence.
But now your mum was dead... and you were dreading having to join your father in California.
You were 16 and you didn't want to live with him, you already knew what would happen ; he'd go flying, on a mission or for his own pleasure, leaving you alone at home - if you could call it home. The hangar where he lived now was something you'd always hated . It had no place for anything or anyone other than his passion for the sky, for planes and speed. You didn't want to leave your new life, even though you loved California. Your school, your friends, your family, your routine. But you didn't really have much of a choice. You were 16. He was now your legal guardian and you didn't want to drag your grandparents into a custody battle. Even though part of you told yourself that your dad would probably agree to let you stay with them, you didn't want to take that chance. And you hoped he'd be more present, that you'd finally have the father you'd dreamed of, that your other friends had. If other military parents could be there for their children, why couldn't Pete?
Perhaps because Pete loved flying more than anything else in the world. The sky was his one true love.
Even though you knew it, you held out the faintest hope that he would finally take his responsibilities as a father. Unfortunately, Pete was still Pete. He wasn't cut out to be a father. A fun uncle, maybe. A parent, no. The fact that Bradley no longer spoke to him proved that.
You were 18 when you packed your bags and headed off to the naval school in Maryland. You wanted to be a pilot too. And you wanted to get away from that bloody hangar, so empty, so alone.
Pete wasn't there when you left. Not even a message or a note. Nothing at all.
You weren't even surprised.
It was Tom Kazansky - Uncle Tom - who had taken you to the airport. He had been more present in your life than your own father, even though you rarely saw him. You knew your relationship with Pete was a sensitive subject, and you knew when Tom gave him a hard time. Pete was suddenly more present - too present . He'd pop into your life for a few days, trying to be the cool or bossy dad, but it always ended in a fight.Â
You hated it when he did that. You hated the way he would act like your friend, or like a strict parent, talking about curfew and how no boys were allowed in his 'home'. You hated the way he would try to be the father that he had never been in your whole life. You hated the way he tried to convince you that he was trying to change, that he'd be there for you.
But you couldn't blame Uncle Tom for trying to shake your father. He had children too, but despite his love of the air, he had been a present parent to them. Â
But some days were not as bad as others. Sometimes, when he was in a good mood, Pete would take you flying. And even though it was hard to admit, you were a bit of a flier yourself. The feeling of freedom, of being alone in a comforting way. It was mesmerizing.
So, without him knowing, you decided to join the navy after graduation. You took your mother's name, Evans , so that you would not attract attention. Only Tom knew, so your dad wouldn't and couldn't pull your papers like he did with Bradley.Â
You found out that he had done this when you saw Bradley one day in the summer before you made your choice. At first you did not recognize him. He was 26 now. He was taller, more muscular and had a 80s mustache that suited him well - puberty had treated him really good. He was the spitting image of his father, whom you'd only seen in photographs and heard about when Tom and Pete reminisced over drinks about the past.
But Bradley had the same look in his eyes as his mother, Carole.Â
As a child, you adored Carole. She was always there to comfort you when your parents were at odds, picking you up from kindergarten when your father was on a mission and your mother was at work⌠She was kind of a second mom. You went to her funeral with your mother eight years ago, you never cried so much.
The summer of your reunion with Bradley had been the summer of his return from the Naval Academy, which he had graduated from with honors. He was a very good pilot and would soon be going on a mission. The day before he left, you snuck out of the hangar to meet him at a nearby bar. He had celebrated his departure with you and a handful of friends, promising to keep in touch as often as possible. As he left, you realized how much you'd missed your Bradbrad.
You were 18, and you remembered how quiet the ride to the airport had been. Part of you wanted to stay. You loved California. It was close to the ocean, the people were friendly, and at the Navy base everyone knew you.
You'd even earned a nickname, the call sign you hoped to use soon : Tempest . It was a bittersweet memory of a stormy night when Pete "forgot" to pick you up from baseball practice. You had landed on the base, mad as hell, soaked to the bone. You'd yelled at your father as hard as the storm had raged. It had been a huge fight. And of course, everyone had heard. Surprisingly, many had defended you rather than your father. You were relieved then. And to cheer you up while your dad was embarrassed, Tom took you to your favorite fast food and laughed with you about the scene. "You walked in there like a damn storm, a tempest ! Heck, that should be your call sign when you join the ranks !" You smiled as you remembered his raspy laugh and all the stories he told you about his days at Topgun .Â
It was through those stories that you learned a little bit more about your father, The Maverick . His accomplishments, his reckless attitude in the air, his urge to always define whatâs possible and pushing the limits. Your desire, your need , to join the Navy to become a pilot only grew, digging a hole of longing for the sky deep inside you. You wanted your father to see you, to acknowledge you. You wanted to be more like him.
You were 27 years old when you were called to the NAS North Island for a "top secret" mission that required "the best of the best". To your surprise, you were one of the youngest and one of the only women. But you'd missed California too much to worry about such details. Like many pilots, you had joined the Hard Deck for a drink the day before training began. You soon met Natasha "Phoenix" Trace and Jake "Hangman" Seresin. Two strong personalities. Then came Javy âCoyoteâ Machado and Robert "Bob" Floyd. He was discreet, a bit shy. And before you could introduce yourself to the others, someone entered the bar and caught Jake's eye.
"Bradshaw. As I live and breathe."
"Hangman. You look... good." His voice was behind you and you didn't dare turn around to see him.Â
"Well, I am good. I'm very good Rooster ."
You let the two men talk, then Bradley greeted Natasha and the others. At last, his gaze landed on you. You couldn't help but smile stupidly. He looked so surprised and happy. "Y/N Tempest Evans?!"
"Hey Bradbrad ..." you smiled and happily accepted his embrace. He squeezed you against him and asked you all about your journey, which you happily did, while in the distance the bell rang, indicating that a customer couldn't pay his bill and had to be kicked out. Out of the corner of your eye, you thought you recognized your father, but Jake and Javy had already grabbed him by the arms and dragged him outside. You didnât have the time to really think about it, Bradley taking you by the hand to sing with him at the piano. You laughed and followed him with the others in his Great balls of fire âs reprise. It had been a great night.
The next day, at the first meeting, you thought your heart stopped when you saw that your instructor was actually Pete... and from the look on his face, he wasn't happy to see you there. Before the meeting was over, you heard his voice call your name ; it had a barely disguised note of anger. "Lieutenant Evans. Youâll stay after training, we'll have a word."
Bradley looked at you, concerned. He knew that you had never told Pete about the Navy, but he didn't know that even after nine years, your father was still unaware of your career. The others were confused and you could feel questioning gazes on you. Great way to begin this thing , you thought.
You were 27 and a very good pilot. An excellent one. One of the best. That's why you were here after all, wasnât it ? You walked in your fatherâs footsteps, perhaps as talented as him at that age. But you were also as reckless as him, living up to your callsign. A tempest was never soft or delicate, neither were you. You had risked your life so many times in your five years of service. Tom often told you that you were just like your father and that it scared him. You didnât think, you just did , you wanted to go faster, higher and further. Acting like the storm that you were, leaving your enemies confused by what had just happened. The adrenaline, the speed, the immensity of the sky, the feeling of freedom... you finally understood why Pete loved being in his plane so much. You felt a little closer to him in those moments.
And yet, in nine years of absence, he had never once contacted you. You had disappeared one day and he hadn't even looked for you. Your uncle had promised not to say anything about your career, but Pete hadn't even been interested in why or where you were going.
Seeing him angry made you furious . How could he have the nerve to be mad at you?Â
After the training and the 200 pushups you had to do because - of course - you didn't beat your old man, you stayed on deck and waited for the others to leave. Bradley gave you a little squeeze on the shoulder, as if to give you strength, and reluctantly left. You heard Hondo telling Pete to calm himself before saying things he might regret out of anger.
Once again, the silence between you and your father was heavy.Â
You couldn't take your eyes off him, waiting for him to finally speak. You could see that he was trying to stay calm. But you already felt like exploding . You could feel the reproaches, the so-called concern. You could feel that he wanted to push you away .Â
"Y/N... how did you... you went to the Academy behind my back?!"
"Iceman," you replied simply, your eyes and voice cold. "And you never asked where I was either."
"You-?! I should have known, you lied to me."Â
âItâs not lying if youâre not asked.â you mutter, âYou taught me that.â
âNowâs not the time to play that game Y/N,â he snapped, "you can't be here."
"With all due respect, Captain, that's not your call."
You really tried to remain calm, knowing that the others must have been listening nearby - especially Jake. You didn't want to draw any more attention, but you felt your blood boiling under your skin.
"I will talk to Vice Admiral Simpson about this. I don't suppose anyone's made the connection between us. But now there's clearly a conflict of interest-"
"You have no right to take this mission away from me. It's not fair," you gasped, eyes wide.
"I am your father ! I can and will do it."
"What ?! No ! No, you can't ! 9 years of nothing but silence and now you're acting like a worried father ?!" you snapped, moving towards him and pointing an accusing finger. A nervous laugh escaped you and you sighed, pursing your lips. "Why do you always have to act like this ? You've never acted like a father to me, except to get in my way !"
"Get in your way ? No ! I care about you-"
"Really ?!" you cut him off, raising your voice, "Then where have you been for 9 years ?! What did Tom have to say to you that you weren't even lookin' for me ? Where was all this care when I left and you were not here ? Where were you huh ?! Where was all that concern ?!"
Pete's eyes widened and he searched for words. He should have known that he could not argue with your point so he just huffed then scolded. "I'm your captain, Lieutenant Evans ! Keep your voice down !"
"Oh, now it's not my father talking ?!" you couldn't hold back a nervous, fake laugh. "You see how you are ?! Always twisting things your way ?! Why are you avoiding that conversation ? Why are you running away again ?!" youâre almost screaming, inches close to him, eyes locked in his.
"Lieutenant Evans !" he growled. You grumbled and let out a heavy sight, calming yourself. You stepped back and clenched your fists along your body.
"Will that be all, Captain Mitchell ?"
You clenched your fists even harder, your knuckles turning white. You wanted to physically shake him to finally have answers. But you couldnât, at least not here, not now.
"Y/N..." he huffed, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Will that be all, Captain ?" you repeated, your voice slightly trembling. Tears of rage threatened to fall. You held them back, too proud to cry in front of him. Pete looked at you and sighed quietly.Â
"You're dismissed Lieutenant Evans..."
You left the deck with a quick stride. Your heart was pounding in your chest, a mixture of anger, frustration and sadness. Of course, the rest of the squadron was there, already clean and changed. Seeing the anger in your eyes, no one said a word, not even Hangman. He just stared at you, confused, as you slammed the door of the changing room.Â
Later that evening, as the squadron relaxed at the bar, Jake couldn't help but bring up the earlier scene.Â
"So our dear Tempest's dad is the famous Maverick?"
" He's not my father ," you muttered, finishing another beer. "My genitor maybe. But he's not my father."
"Why Evans if Mitchell's your old man?" Jake insisted.Â
You could hear Bradley and Natasha telling him to drop it, but he kept coming back. You could feel your anger rising again. You downed another beer and slammed the empty bottle down on the table.Â
"Tell me, Bagman , werenât you taught to keep your mouth shut about things that don't concern you? I'm sure your mama taught you some manners, didn't she? Now shut up before I put my fist through your face," you growled, half drunk, half angry. Jake scoffed and held his hands up in defense while Bob stopped you from approaching him. Seeing your father enter the bar only made you feel worse. And it took all your patience not to slit Jake's throat on the spot as he continued his overly curious and unpleasant comments with his snide attitude.
Bradley went with you to get some fresh air as he wasn't too keen on seeing Pete either. When you arrived at the beach, a wave of sadness washed over you. You knew that your father would do everything in his power to get you out of this mission, but what was worse was that he didn't even try to talk to you, to reconnect. Your shoulders shook and you couldn't hold back the tears any longer. Only a sobbing hiccup betrayed you and Bradley rushed to take you in his arms. You felt the strength leave your legs and the two of you ended up sitting in the sand, crying your eyes out and clinging to Bradley. "I've got you... Let it all out..." he murmured between two kisses on the top of your head. His big hands gently stroked your back, letting go of all your pain. "It's okay, baby girl... it's okay..."Â
Bradley and you practically lived together now. Youâve inherited your momâs old house by the ocean and itâs confier than being on base. So those kinds of pet names were almost common now. But this time you didnât blush at it, your emotions a mess.
You cried against him for a long time, as you hadn't done for many years. Rooster held you until you calmed down. "It's not fair..." you whispered, sniffling. "He's going to take me off the mission..."Â
"He won't be able to... Ice recommended you... there's nothing he can do about it..."
You shrugged, not really sure if Tom could help you. He was very ill and you didn't want to tire him out with your disagreements with your father.
âHeâs just an old dickhead, donât worryâŚâ Bradley tried to cheer you up but youâre too distraught to play along. After a little less than an hour later, you find the force to get up and you head home with him. You fall asleep in the car and wake up the next morning in your bed.
There wasn't much time left before the mission. Training sessions were coming up and so were your fights with Pete. Cyclone hadn't pulled you out of the mission, but you weren't sure if it was to spite your father or because he felt you were capable of succeeding, just like your comrades.
Days passed at an alarming pace. The team slowly bonded through group exercises and moments of relaxation, especially with the game your father had invented: dogfight football.
You couldn't lie, it felt good to have such moments. But your father still didn't talk to you and you were still angry. You remained professional, but you couldn't stand his fatherly attitude towards you.
All your hopes of renewing real ties disappeared when you learned of Tom's death. You had seen him the day before and he had made you promise to try to take care of Pete. His funeral was one of the hardest moments of your life.
And because bad news never comes alone, the mission was moved up by a week. Pete was temporarily relieved of his duties, as Admiral Simpson still believed his plan of attack was doomed to failure. Of course, your father, in his legendary arrogance and cockiness, proved him wrong with an unauthorized flight. Hope rose in the team but it was still a very risky plan.Â
Cyclone decided to make Pete team leader, and not surprisingly, he didn't choose you as his wingman. Part of you was angry because you felt you could do it, and another part of you was mortified when he announced that his choice would be Bradley. This mission was suicide, and you couldn't afford to lose them both. You couldn't afford to lose anyone in the squadron, but these two, it was just too much.
You didn't catch up with Pete as much as you wanted to, there were still so many questions left unanswered, so much time to make up for⌠You hadn't been able to make things right with your dad, you hadn't been able to tell him that you had this passion for aviation because of him. You hadn't been able to tell him that you regretted not telling him about the academy, that you regretted the 9 years of distance between you...
And you didn't spend enough time with Bradley.
Sure, you were always glued to each other in your free time, taking walks on the beach, talking and singing together at the Hard Deck piano, having movie nights... but you didn't want it to stop. Not after you'd half confessed how you felt about him after a few too many drinks, telling him that your 4-year-old declaration still stood. He laughed and told you that he hadn't forgotten either.
On the day of the mission, you barely managed to find your way to your father. "Captain?" your voice was louder than you had expected.
"Lieutenant Evans?"
"I... Before you go, I'd like to talk-"
"We'll talk when I get back."
"... Promise me you'll come back."Â
For a moment, you were that five-year-old girl again, watching her father leave. Pete must have seen it in your eyes and climbed down from the cockpit to take you in his arms. "I promise I'll come back in one piece, kiddo..." You hugged him tightly and nodded in agreement. After a few seconds, you let go and let him settle down. You ran to Bradley and made him promise you the same. He smiled confidently, even though you knew he was stressed. "Don't worry, we've got a Star Wars marathon to watch," he smiled before gently and discreetly kissing your forehead. You blushed and nodded, a worried little smile on your face.Â
Reluctantly, you left the track and joined Jake. You were glued to your radios, following the progress of the mission. Everything was going well until two enemy fighters spotted them.Â
You stopped breathing.Â
First they had Bradley in sight and locked on.Â
The enemy fired.Â
But your father took the brunt of the missiles and saved Rooster.
Your brain didn't know how to process all this information and shut down when you heard Bradley's decision to go after Pete before getting shot down too.
You don't remember much else. All you knew is that Jake had to leave in a hurry to find and rescue them. When they landed with that really out beat up F-14, you rushed out on deck to greet them, swallowing all your worry and anger at their unconscious behavior for the moment.
Once ashore, the entire crew decided to celebrate their success at Penny's Bar, dragging Pete with them. You stayed close to Bradley, as if afraid that it was all a dream and that he wasn't really there. He wouldn't let go of you either, his arm tight around you. You felt like a schoolgirl, it was stupidly comfortable. You looked at Pete, who was happily chatting with Penny and other members of the team. You didn't want to spoil the evening with a discussion that was out of your controlâŚ
Around one o'clock you went out for some fresh air, leaving Bradley to play with those who hadn't returned home yet ; Reuben, Natasha, Mickey and Javy.
As a cold shiver ran through you, you felt a heavy jacket on your shoulders. You immediately recognized the peculiar smell ; old whiskey mixed with motor oil and a hint of cologne.
" Dad ? "
"I thought you wanted to talk ?" he asked quietly, moving toward the beach. You nodded and took his pinky with yours like a child, searching for your words.
"I'm sorry..." you breathed, holding back your tears. "For going to the Academy behind your back and not telling you⌠not talking to you for almost ten years... I know that giving news is supposed to go both ways and all, but... but you weren't even there when I left... and I guess... I guess I resented you as much as I wanted you to be there, you know ?" you sniffed before continuing your monologue. "I just wanted you to see me . âCause⌠itâs because of you I wanted to go down this road, you gave me this love for flight, for speed, for the sky. I... I just wanted you to be happy that we finally had something in common, but... but you had already pulled Bradley's papers, so I didn't think and I just did what seemed most logical and easiest. Take Mom's name, ask Ice not to tell you. I know it was stupid⌠but I also know it would have hurt too much if you had stopped me. And... And then no news for nine years... It hurt even more. The Academy and my first years of service weren't what I thought they would be... it was rough and sometimes I just⌠I just wanted to call you to come and pick me from there⌠but⌠but I wouldn't change that for the world. Because Iâm still a Mitchell and Mitchells never quit right ?â You took a few seconds, your gaze meeting his, to see if he wanted to intervene but he didnât. He just looked at you, taking all the information you gave him. You let out a shaky breath, playing with the sleeves of his jacket nervously. âAnd I know you must and may resent me for the rest of my life, but⌠but I just wanted you to be proud of me and... and for us to finally be a family." You bit your lip, trying to calm the flow of emotions that came through.
The sky began to rumble and your father remained silent after your speech. A few tears rolled down your cheeks as he couldn't find the words.
"Please, Dad, say something..." you sighed, your voice breaking.
The rain began to fall slowly and Pete's silence was too much for your heart to take. He couldn't even look at you anymore. You thought you could take it ; you were used to his silenced treatment, used to the fact that he couldnât express his feelings. But right now, you needed him to speak, to ease your worries, to confront you.
"Dad... please... I'm begging you... talk to meâŚ" you repeated desperately.
You broke down again and cried like a little girl in front of your mute father. You hated that he couldn't open up to you and you hated that he saw you so frail, so fragile. Your sobs mingled with the rain, which grew heavier, the wind and waves making the silence deafening. You bit your lip and wiped your eyes with the back of your hand, in vain.
"I know I'm not... I know you didn't plan⌠you didnât want to have me with mom-"
"No, it's true... I never planned to be a father... The very idea of having children terrified me and still does," Pete interrupted you, "but... you're one of the most beautiful things, if not the most, that has ever happened to me. And I'm petrified of anything happening to you, I'm helpless on so many levels... and I... I didn't know how to be there when you needed me... I know I must have let you down a lot..." He sighed, catching his breath and holding back his own tears. "I thought... it would be best for both of us to let you have your freedom... but the weeks, months and years went by and I didn't have the guts to try to contact you. I was too ashamed... but Y/N, I never stopped loving you... you're my daughter... and even if you have my damn temper and your momâs stubbornness," you couldn't hold back a little laugh and a slight smile despite your tears, which your father tenderly chased away with his thumb, "you'll always be my little girl, too eager to get on our little plane for a ride, passionate and fierce⌠I donât resent you⌠I think I would have done it your way if my old man put me in this situationâŚ" He allowed himself to cry as well as the two of you finally hugged each other, relieved of an enormous weight.
"I love you too, Dad... sorry for everything..." you mumbled against his shoulder.
"No, no⌠Iâm sorry⌠It's my turn to apologize, sweetheart..."
The two of you lay embracing in the rain for a while, making up for years of distance in a few minutes. You were the first to let go. You once again took his hand like a child.
"We better get back before Hangman starts gossiping..."
"Or before Bradley starts worrying," Pete teased. You blushed and looked at him with wide eyes. "What? Like I haven't noticed the way you two look at each other. I'm not that blind kid!" He laughed âAh⌠your mom and Carole would have been thrilled !â
You returned to the bar, soaking wet, chatting about anything and everything. Seeing you, Bradley's expression changed from worried to relieved, then back to worried as he noticed you were shivering a little from the cold. He politely left his conversation with Mickey to join you.
"Are you okay? Do you want to go home and change?"
"That would be a good idea..." you smiled at him. You had to admit you were exhausted from this rollercoaster of emotions. You said goodbye to the others from a distance, then to your father in a final hug, and followed Bradley back to his old blue Bronco. The two of you made your way to your small house.Â
Bradley was a good roommate. You each had your own room, but you often fell asleep together in front of the TV or on one of your beds after long late-night discussions. You liked the routine you created. And you hoped with all your might that nothing would change. But your feelings for him were becoming more and more obvious in your mind and heart. You wondered how much longer you could hide it.
Seeing you so silent, Bradley placed his hand on your thigh and gave it a gentle squeeze.
"Are you all right, lilâ Tempest?"Â
His eyes never left the road as his thumb traced small circles on your jeans. A shiver ran through your entire body and you wished this contact would never end.
"Everything's fine Roo... don't worry..."
"Okay..."
He squeezed your knee again and left his hand on your thigh. The warmth of his palm made you shiver and you placed your hand on top of his shyly. Once again, you felt like a teenager. It was stupid.
The ride home was rather quiet, in a comforting way, Bradley driving carefully in the pouring rain and humming the song that passed on the radio. When he parked, you stayed in the car for a moment. You sensed that he had something he wanted to say to you, and he sensed the same thing on your side. After a few minutes of silence and shy glances, he smiled at you, got out of the car, and you followed. He ran to unlock the door and waited for you under the porch.
You wanted to run as well, but your legs felt heavy. That's when your anxiety decided to take over. The stress and worry of the past few days were finally catching up to you. As you saw Bradley step out into the rain with a worried expression, the conversation on the radio played in your head. Your father's F-18 had exploded, and Bradley was on his way to pick him up. And now it was his turn to go down. A huge pressure on your chest stopped you from breathing and new tears rolled down your cheeks. You couldn't move, pinned to the pavement. Silent sobs shook you as your vision blurred. You couldn't see or hear Bradley any more. You felt so alone, so cold. Your panic attack froze you under the heavy rain and you couldn't get out of it. You couldn't hear anything except the intense ringing in your ear. You wanted to throw up. The world spun around you as your mind screamed what the communications officer had said earlier, "Maverick's down ! Rooster's down !"Â
They were dead.Â
For the long forty minutes or so that followed, they were dead . And you were stuck in that loop. One minute everything was fine, the mission was a complete success. The next, the last two most important people in your life were dead. The ground began to feel strangely unstable as you fought harder to breathe. Eventually your legs gave out and you felt yourself fall, but you didn't hit the ground. You felt two arms around you, holding you securely but not too tightly, then lifting you up as if you weighed nothing. The buzzing in your ears slowly faded away and you didn't feel the rain on your skin anymore. You gasped for air when you finally heard Breadley call your name, concern in his voice. As you raised your eyes to look at him, a sudden relief washed over you and you couldn't help but sob again.
He was home. You were home. With him.
"What's going on, Y/N? Hey... Breathe... breathe and talk to me..." he said quietly.
"I thought... I thought you and Dad... you... you were dead..." you managed to say between sobbing hiccups. You clung to his shirt, afraid he would fade away. He smiled a little and kissed the top of your head as he cupped your cheeks with his calloused hands. Then he took your hands and laid them flat on his heart. You could feel it beating at a regular pace.
"I'm here. Iâm okay. You're okay. I'm very much alive, Mav is too, and you're stuck with me, with us, little Tempest..."
"Yeah ? Promise ?" you sniffed, your lower lip still trembling.
"Yeah... Promise." he smiled at you again then hugged you tightly.Â
He nuzzled his face into the crook of your neck, the bristles of his mustache tickling you a little. One of your hands reached up to his neck, your fingers brushing his little hair. The two of you stayed like that for a moment, absorbing each other's presence. You felt so relaxed in his arms, as if you belonged there. Your heart fluttered as you heard him hum one of your favorite songs and then felt him beginning to slow dance with you, taking you peacefully to the bathroom. You were too exhausted and shaken from your panic attack to even ask him what he was doing. You just obliged and listened to him, hypnotized. He declared that you needed a long relaxing bath and in the meantime he would order pizza. He helped you take off your shoes and socks, then your hoodie. He kissed your forehead and let you finish undressing, leaving the bathroom to give you some privacy.Â
You couldnât stay too long in the bath, your mind being too loud. You knew you would break down again if you werenât close to him . Bradley made you feel safe, secure, grounded. That was what you needed to relax. You were so used to being alone before, used to the silence, the empty rooms. But since he decided to kind of move in with you, you couldnât bear the loneliness. The house was so warm now, so welcoming and comfy.
As you crossed his room after youâve washed, you noticed that old hoodie you bought him one Christmas when you were in naval school. Itâs a silly one, the hood designed to look like a rooster. An amused sigh escaped you and you took it to wear. It was still as soft and comfy as the day you bought it.Â
âStealing my clothes I see ?â he chuckled when you joined him in the kitchen.
âStealing my beers I see ?â you teased him back, pointing at the bottle in his hand, âI thought cranberry beers were for chicks ?âÂ
âMama Carole didnât raise me to be pickyâ He scoffed in dĂŠfense, with a smirk.
âOh I know she didnât. And my mama didnât raise me to steal, Iâm just borrowing that hoodie.â you smiled, putting the hood on. âLook, weâre twins now, Rooster !â
The both of you laughed at that stupid joke. He then smiled at you and put a strand of your hair behind your ear.Â
âFeeling better sweets ?â
âYeah⌠sorry about that I⌠I think these past days were a bit too much for my brainâŚâ
âDonât be sorry⌠itâs normal to break sometimes⌠everyone does.âÂ
You hummed and nodded, but before you could talk, the doorbell rang. âMust be the pizzas ! Get yourself comfortable on the couch and choose a movie Y/N, Iâll be right back !â He kissed your cheek, close to your lips - too close - and ran to the door. You stood there for a moment, cheeks and heart warming up, before doing what he asked you. Once again, you felt like a schoolgirl at her first sleepover with her crush. You couldnât help but feel butterflies fluttering in your stomach and your face turning a bit red.Â
You should tell him. But you risked losing that friendship you had. And at the same time, you wanted more than that. You wanted to feel his arms around you, his lips - oh those lips - on you, to wake up next to him each and every morning in your bedâŚÂ You fantasized about a life with him for a minute, not noticing him getting back with the food. You jumped slightly when he waved his hand in front of your eyes to snap you out of your reverie. Your gaze locked with his as he asked if everything was all right.
"Yes, yes... I was just lost in thought..." you smiled shyly, your cheeks flushed, letting him settle in beside you. He took the plaid to cover both of you, then put his arm around your shoulders.
"And what were you thinking about? Or who?" He teased.
"About us, actually..."
"Us?" He said, a little surprised.
Your cheeks were crimson. You'd said too much already. You couldn't run anymore. You just nodded, not daring to meet his gaze. You felt him come closer and turn a little towards you after a few seconds of silence.
"Me too, I have to admit..."Â
"Really?" you almost whispered, looking up at him. He smiled and nodded.
"Yeah... to tell you the truth, I like it here, but... I don't want to be just another roommate anymore. We're pretty similar in a lot of things, Phoenix even says we look like an old married couple that's always jammed together." You chuckled a little but couldn't help but agree. Bradley smiled a little before continuing, a little nervously. "And... the crash, almost getting killed... It made me realize a lot of things... like the fact that I didn't want to lose you. And that... maybe... the fact that I felt so comfortable with you meant... meant more than friendship..."
Your heart raced in your chest. Was he going to confess what you were thinking? You bit the inside of your cheek to prove to yourself that you weren't dreaming, and before he could continue, you pulled him by his collar and crushed your lips against his. The kiss was desperate, as if you needed it to keep on living. Bradley didn't waste a second in responding, one of his hands sliding up your cheek and the other down your back to press you against him. You would have liked that moment to last forever, but the lack of air forced you to pull away a little. He pressed his forehead against yours and let out a small laugh. "I guess it's mutual, then?"
"You're a little genius arenât you ?" You couldn't help but tease him before kissing him again.
You felt so good against him, kiss after kiss. You felt complete, soothed.Â
And you could easily get used to it .

Bradley Bradshaw x Reader
WC: 1.4K
Summary: Change happens to everyone, but what happens when you forget to change with each other
A/N: READ WITH THE SONG TRUST, MADE MYSELF SAD
TW: angst :(
The morning light crept through the half-open blinds, casting slats of soft gold across the room, wrapping around Bradley Bradshaw as he lay awake. The California dawn was warm against his skin, yet a chill seemed to linger in the air. He shifted, turning toward the other side of the bed, where Y/N lay, her back to him, her body curled gently, close yet somehow unreachable. It hadnât always been this way. There was a time when theyâd been inseparable, woven together so tightly that he couldnât imagine life without her.
But now, with her just inches away, it felt as if a whole world separated them.
It had been months, maybe longer, since theyâd last felt truly close. Somewhere along the way, theyâd stopped reaching for each other, stopped filling the silence with laughter and soft words. The distance between them was a slow, creeping thing, an invisible fracture that had widened with each day. Bradley didnât know when heâd first noticed it, but it weighed on him constantly, growing heavier every time he looked at her and realized she wasnât looking back.
He lay there, eyes on her still form, fighting the urge to reach out and pull her close, just to feel her warmth, to know she was still his. But something stopped him. Maybe it was the fear that sheâd pull away, or worse, the fear that she wouldnâtâthat sheâd just lie there, letting him hold her but feeling nothing. Heâd always thought their love would be enough to withstand anything, but now he felt like he was standing on the edge of a cliff, unsure if heâd fall or if theyâd somehow manage to fly.
A soft sigh escaped her lips as she stirred, her eyelids fluttering open. For a split second, her gaze met his, and Bradley felt a flicker of hopeâmaybe sheâd say something, maybe this time, theyâd talk about the hollow space that had settled between them. But she just looked away, pulling the blanket tighter around herself as if to keep him out.
Slowly, he sat up, raking a hand through his hair, feeling the silence stretch out in the early morning. There was so much he wanted to say, but the words just wouldnât come. He stood and crossed the room, his footsteps quiet on the hardwood floor as he made his way to the kitchen. The ritual was familiar: starting the coffee, reaching for her favorite mug, all the small, silent gestures heâd performed every morning since theyâd first moved in together. Each movement reminded him of what they used to beâhow they used to laugh over cups of coffee and make plans for the future.
Now, the air felt heavy as she joined him in the kitchen. She took the mug from his hand without a word, her fingers grazing his for the briefest moment. He could feel the weight of that touch, the softness of her skin, yet it felt as though she were miles away.
"Are you heading out today?" she asked, her voice so soft he almost didnât hear it. She took a sip of her coffee, her gaze fixed somewhere over his shoulder, as if she couldnât bear to look directly at him.
"Yeah," he replied, a slight edge in his voice that he hadnât meant to add. "Another early flight tomorrow. Iâll be gone a few days."
She nodded, her expression neutral, her eyes locked on the swirling liquid in her mug. For a moment, he thought he saw something flicker across her faceâpain, maybe, or regretâbut it vanished as quickly as it had come. Bradley felt a pang in his chest, a dull ache that wouldnât go away. Heâd never imagined that their mornings would feel like this: two strangers standing side by side, each of them too afraid to say the words that would make everything real.
"Take care of yourself," she said, her voice strained, as if she was trying to hold back a wave of something unspoken. Her smile was barely there, just a twitch of her lips, but it didnât reach her eyes. Bradleyâs heart ached at the sight. He used to know how to make her laugh with just a look, used to be the one who could chase away any worry or sadness. But now, he felt like heâd lost herâand the hardest part was knowing that he might never get her back.
Unable to stand the silence any longer, he joined her at the window, their shoulders close enough to touch. The world outside was just beginning to stir, bathed in the soft glow of morning, the trees rustling in a gentle breeze that whispered of change. They stood there, side by side, both of them lost in their own thoughts, unable to break the fragile silence.
"Iâve been thinking about us," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. The words hung in the air, heavy and raw. Bradleyâs pulse quickened, his breath catching in his throat. Heâd been waiting to hear her say something, anything, that would give him a glimpse of what she was feeling.
He swallowed, his voice low, rough. "Yeah⌠me too. Feels like weâre⌠I donât know. Drifting."
She nodded, her gaze still locked on the trees outside. "I think⌠I think weâve both changed, Bradley. Maybe we didnât notice it because it happened so slowly, but⌠weâre not the same people we used to be."
Her words cut through him, sharp and honest. He knew she was right. Theyâd both been fighting battles, each in their own wayâhim with the Navy, the constant deployments, the adrenaline and danger, and her with the life sheâd built outside of him, her own dreams and desires. Somewhere along the way, theyâd stopped fighting for each other.
He took a shaky breath, his fingers tightening around his coffee mug. "I donât want to lose you," he said, the words tumbling out, raw and desperate. It was the most vulnerable thing heâd said in months, and he didnât even know if it would matter. "I donât know who I am without you, Y/N. Weâve built this life together⌠and now, Iâm scared that if I try to find myself again, Iâll lose you in the process."
She looked at him then, really looked at him, her eyes softening. In that moment, he saw the girl heâd fallen in love with, the girl whoâd promised to be there no matter what. Her expression was filled with a tenderness that he hadnât seen in a long time. "Iâm scared too, Bradley," she whispered, her voice cracking. "But maybe⌠maybe we need to let go a little. Give ourselves room to breathe. Because I think thatâs the only way weâre going to find our way back to each other."
The truth of her words settled over him like a weight. They had both been holding on so tightly, trying to preserve something that no longer fit. The love theyâd shared was still there, but it was smothered, trapped under layers of expectation and unspoken fears.
Did Bradley love too hard? Did love take it down? They were both getting older and growing but when in time did they forget to grow with each other?
They stood there in silence, the realization hanging between them. The seasons had changed, days turning into months, and still, theyâd both been hoping that some miracle would bring them back to what they once were. Theyâd been clinging to memories, refusing to accept that maybe, just maybe, they needed to change too.
Finally, Bradley reached out, his hand finding hers. His fingers laced with hers, and for a moment, he felt that familiar warmth, the comfort of knowing she was still there. "Weâll figure it out," he said, his voice steady with a quiet determination. "Even if it takes time, even if itâs hard⌠I want to climb this mountain with you. I want to find us again."
She looked down at their joined hands, a small smile breaking through the sadness in her eyes. "I know" she whispered, her fingers tightening around his, as if this was the last time holding onto him.
The sun was higher now, casting warm light over everything, illuminating the world in a way that felt almost hopeful. She knew that the road ahead wouldnât be easy. There would be nights of silence, days of doubt, but there was a shared understanding between them.
They would let go of the past, of the people they used to be, and make room for the possibility of something new. As they stood there, watching the sun rise, the choice to keep climbing without each other was deafening, silent hopes that reflections of each other would appear in the snow covered hills. Bringing a landslide that would meet them together again.
They would face the unknown, step by step, trusting that somehow, somewhere, they would find each other again. Maybe in another life.

Part one of my Heartbreak Feels So Good sequel series!
Pairing: Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw x Female!Reader Word count: 3.1k CW: Use of Y/N
Find the original series here!
It's been a week since you and Bradley confessed your feelings to each other on the beach. After an impromptu first date, Bradley takes you to a new Italian place on the seafront to wine and dine you like a true gentleman.
Natasha Trace was rarely wrong.
You stood in front of your full-length mirror, admiring your reflectionânot just looking at it, but admiring it.Â
You werenât a vain person. It simply wasnât in your nature. But something about this yellow dressâthe one you were going to wear for Jakeâs leaving drinksâmade you feel confident. It had been so long since youâd felt this way that youâd almost forgotten what it was like. Maybe the dress had magical powers, or maybe yellow was just your colour. Either way, you were relieved to feel like someone worthy of dinner and drinks with Lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw. Nothing was worse than going on a date and feeling like you were punching above your weight.Â
You had Nat to thank for this. Sheâd warned you off of wearing it for Jakeâs leaving drinks the Friday before because she thought it better saved for a more special occasion. The white dress had walked so this one could run, and now there was no reason to stress about finding an outfit on the day of your first date.Â
If you wanted to get technical, it was your second date with Bradley, but he didnât class last Friday night as a date. You did, though. You were highly sentimental, and that night was more special to you because it was silly and spontaneous. Bradley thought it ungentlemanly, but it felt like something from a romance novel to you.Â
After your confession and makeout session on the beach, youâd practically begged him to take you out for food since he wanted to do things properly. As a man of his word, you knew he wouldnât budge, wouldnât go home with you unless heâd had a meal with you first. As a way of cheating his system, youâd convinced him to take you to In-N-Out, and heâd agreed as long as you promised youâd do things by the book the following week.Â
So heâd ordered an Uber, and when you arrived at the restaurant, you ordered more food than should have been allowed. You picked a booth in the window, and the two of you sat there until most of the food was gone, and you were both relatively sober. Bradleyâs phone was dead, but the Daggers had been blowing yours up for two hours until you eventually had to answer. Neither of you wanted to reveal that you were technically on a date. Something about keeping it between the two of you made it feel more special and less pressurised, so you made up a lie and said Bradley had been sick and youâd taken him home before heading back to your apartment. You'd promised Jake youâd see him off Sunday morning and promptly turned your phone off.Â
After that, youâd sat in the booth talking until closing time, enjoying getting to know each other all over again. Because youâd sobered up, neither of you wanted to rush each other into bed anymore. You liked the idea of taking things slow, savouring every little moment, and doing things as Bradley had initially wanted. But neither of you regretted your impromptu first date.Â
Your phone pinged on your bedside, and you almost tripped over your feet in your haste to get to it. It was Bradley letting you know that he was leaving his and would be with you shortly. You were simply too excited to wait, so you grabbed your bag and hurried out the door.Â
It was a gorgeous evening, typical of San Diego. Sunlight cascaded down through the trees surrounding your apartment block, creating intricate patterns on the pavement. Birds circled lackadaisically above, in no hurry to get to any particular destination. A group of teens whizzed down the road on brightly coloured rollerskates, laughing carelessly. It was crazy to think you werenât sure about settling here initially. Now, you couldnât imagine living anywhere else.
Bradley Bradshaw definitely had something to do with that.Â
You heard the Bronco before you saw it. The low rumble of its engine was exciting and comforting, as was the man driving it. You could see him grinning as he pulled in, cheeks flushed from the heat of the evening. Before you could hurry over and open the passenger side door, he jumped out of the car to do it for you. He admired your sundress, shamelessly wolf-whistling as you walked over.
âYou look dazzling, Y/N.â He said by way of greeting.
When you reached him, you stood on tiptoes to kiss his cheek. He wore tan dress pants, a brown belt, and a crisp blue shirt. The first three buttons had been left undone, teasing the top of his Herculean chest. Heâd rolled his sleeves up also, revealing his deliciously veiny forearms.Â
Bradley Bradshaw was a well-wrapped gift, especially for you.
âThank you,â you replied. âSo do you.âÂ
He grinned. âOur serverâs gonna have to wear sunglasses.â
You laughed delightedly. âAnd everyone else in the restaurant, if you keep smiling like that.âÂ
He helped you into the Bronco, buckling your seatbelt like he did the day of your breakup. It was a terrible day, but heâd made it better, as was his superpower.
During your drive to the restaurant, the two of you sang along to 80s classicsâKarma Chameleon by Culture Club and Foriegnerâs I Wanna Know What Love Is. Bradley made you feel comfortable enough that you werenât embarrassed by your singing voice despite his sounding angelic. You were too overjoyed to be self-conscious, a clear signpost to Bradley being the one for you. With Elijah, you were always hyperaware of the way you came across. You overthought your appearance, the words you said, and even the tone of voice you said them in. And it wasnât just because you wanted to control how he perceived youâit was because you had to be careful not to make him angry.Â
Where being with Elijah exhausted you, being with Bradley breathed new life into your mind, body and soul.Â
You arrived at the restaurant floating on cloud nine. Heâd chosen a new Italian place right on the seafront. The interior was tasteful, and the views from the deck out back were worth dying for. As your server (who wasnât wearing sunglasses yet) seated you, you silently hoped the menu was as well-cultivated as the place itself. You had the best seat right on the edge of the deck overlooking the ocean. Paired with your devilishly handsome date, it was already the perfect night, so if the food did end up being shit, you wouldnât be too upset about it.Â
âCan I get you guys started with some drinks?â The server asked with a smile.
âTwo Peronis with lime, please.â Bradley responded, flashing her his movie star smile.
She disappeared to get your drinks, leaving the two of you alone.Â
Bradley reached for your hand over the table, rubbing circles over your palm.
âSo,â he said. âOur first date.â
âOur first date was last week.â You quipped.Â
He smiled fondly, shaking his head. âThat wasnât a date.â
âIt was, and it was the best first date ever. Iâll die on this hill.â
âOkay, fine, our first civilised date.âÂ
Your drinks arrived, and you both busied yourself with the menu. Youâd skipped lunch to ensure you had room for dinner tonight, and your stomach growled audibly.Â
âIâm going for the cannelloni.â Bradley announced.Â
âI think Iâm gonna get a pizza.â You replied. âShall we get garlic bread for the table?â
âIs that even a question?â
After ordering your food, you chatted about work and your friends. You already knew each otherâs historiesfamily and otherwiseâon a friend level, at least. You were still discovering topics youâd never broached and details left out from stories already told. It was exciting getting to know one another again, not nerve-wracking at all. You didnât feel like a fish out of water as you had with Elijah.Â
The food arrived and was just as delicious as youâd hoped, if not more so. You ordered a glass of red wine and Bradley another Peroni. Since he was driving you home, you didnât intend to drink any more. The waitress brought your drinks over, blocking your view of the double doors leading into the restaurant. You completely missed another server seating Penny and Maverick a few tables over. They spotted you before you were even aware of their presence.Â
âIs that Lieutenant Y/LN?â Pete whispered. âWith Bradley?â
Penny glanced at the two of you, eyebrow raised. âIt is. They look like theyâre on a date.â
Pete blinked in shock. âHe didnât tell me he was dating Y/N. He didnât tell me he was dating anyone.âÂ
âHe doesnât have to tell you everything, honey.â
âI know, but this is big.âÂ
He had to admit, it was hurtful to find out something like this in such a manner. He and Bradley had only been getting closer since they arrived home from the mission that had ultimately saved their relationship. Pete would have thought he might have mentioned that he was seeing someone, especially since it was a Lieutenant under his command.Â
âFrom what Iâve heard, sheâs only just gotten out of a relationship, which would mean that whateverâs going on between them is quite new.â Penny pointed out, ever the voice of reason. âMaybe theyâre not ready to share just yet.âÂ
âMaybe.â Pete replied, frowning deeply. âShould we go over there?â
âNo.â Penny hissed. âDid you listen to a word I just said? If they wanted us to know, theyâd have told us. Iâm sure the last thing they need is us ambushing them on what looks to be their first date.â
âSo we just sit here and pretend we havenât seen them?â
âYes.â
You and Bradley were unaware of the conversation happening not ten feet away. You were too wrapped up in one another and the food in front of you to pay any mind to your surroundings, which was probably for the best. Youâd agreed to keep things private for now, and it was working out quite well so far. Not having your friends involved alleviated some pressure to figure out precisely what was happening between you and where it was going; you could set the pace without any interference or judgement. Not to mention the thrill the two of you got from sneaking around and keeping such a massive secret from the rest of the Daggers.Â
âAre we ordering dessert?â Bradley asked once you were finished with your meals.
âIs that even a question?â You mimicked with a grin.
âTouchĂŠ.â
You stood up. âIâm gonna go to the bathroom. Order for me?â
Bradley took the opportunity to admire your full form again. âWhat would you like?â
You refrained from saying 'you.' âSurprise me.â
You waltzed off to the bathroomâwith a bit of extra sway of your hips for Bradleyâs benefit. You couldnât believe how well tonight was going. During your tumultuous relationship with Elijah, youâd promised yourself that if things didnât work out between you, you would never date again. Why would you want to when it had proved to be such a monumental waste of time? But then Bradley had swooped in, and now you could reflect upon how wrong youâd been. There was a reason things hadnât worked out between you and Elijah, and it wasnât just because he was a massive twat. It was because you were never supposed to settle with him. Maybe it was too soon to say, but you wanted to believe that you werenât supposed to settle with him because you were supposed to settle with Bradley.Â
You exited the bathroomâwhich was just as showy as the restaurant itselfâand headed back onto the deck. The later it got, the more people had arrived, and now only a few tables were free. You were wondering whether to text Natasha and ask if she wanted to come here for cocktails next weekend when you locked eyes with Captain Mitchell. He quickly glanced down at his dinner, clearly hoping you hadnât clocked that it was him, and you hurried back to your table.Â
âHey, sweet thing. I ordered you-â
âMav is here.â You panicked, sliding back into your seat.
âWhat?â Bradley started looking around.Â
âOn a date with Penny. Three tables to the right, just behind that lady with the big hair.âÂ
Bradley leaned back so he could see past the big hair in question. âWell, shit.âÂ
âGuess the catâs out of the bag.âÂ
âIâm gonna talk to him,â Bradley announced. âTell him not to say anything to the rest of the squad.â
âDo you think he would?â
âNot to be a gossip, but he might mention it thinking everyone else already knows.â
You nodded. âThat makes sense.â
He leaned down and kissed your cheek. âIâll be right back.âÂ
Bradley couldnât believe it. Of all the nights Mav couldâve taken Penny on a date, he chose tonight. At this very restaurant, no less. When they saw Bradley approaching their table, they were surprised to see him. If Bradley werenât so good at reading between the lines, heâd have believed they had no idea heâd been sitting three tables away from them.
âBradley!â Penny gushed. âYou look handsome.â
âThank you, Pen.â He smiled. âYou look lovely as always.â
Maverick stood up, took Bradleyâs hand, and hugged him. The short kindâthe bro kindâinvolved a slap on the back.Â
âNice to see you.â Mav said.Â
âI saw you this morning.â Bradley pointed out.
âIs that Lieutenant Y/LN?â Maverick asked coyly, glancing at you sitting alone. âI didnât know the two of you were dating. Why didnât you tell me?â
Penny glared at Mav, making Bradley think theyâd discussed Maverick not saying exactly what heâd just said.Â
âWe havenât told anyone yet. This is our first date, and we kinda just wanna keep it on the down low for now.â
The look Penny shot Mav this time said: I told you so.
âY/N just got out of a pretty shitty relationship, so weâre taking things slow.â
Bradley didnât know why he was telling Mav all this. He was rambling, trying to hide the awkwardness of the situation.Â
âWell, your secretâs safe with me.â Mav assured him.
Bradley relaxed. âThanks, Mav.âÂ
âYou got a good one there, Rooster.â Penny said. âTake care of her.â
âI will, Pen. You donât have to worry about that.â
They said their goodbyes, and Bradley headed back to you. The dessert had arrived: a large slice of tiramisu to share. You had been waiting patiently for him to return before digging in, a shiny silver spoon already in hand.Â
âHeâs not going to say anything.â Bradley said, sliding back into his seat.Â
âWhew. Thatâs a relief.â
He nodded. âBut I think he was upset that I didnât tell him about us.â
You frowned. âDid you tell him that we arenât ready to go public? That this is-â
âNew? Yes.â Bradley finished.Â
âMaybe we could do a double date soon?â You proposed. âIt might help make Mav feel a little more included, and itâd be good to get to know him better since youâre so close.â
Bradley brightened at the suggestion. âYouâd do that?â
âOf course I would.â You replied earnestly. âAnd Iâm not just suggesting it to make him feel better. I actually think it sounds nice.â
âYouâre amazing, you know that?â
âYes, I do.â You smirked, digging into the tasty-looking tiramisu.
Bradley refused to let you pay half of dinner. You vowed to make him let you pay for something sometime soon, even though you knew it would be difficult. He was a true gentleman through and through.Â
You spent the whole drive back to your apartment wondering whether to invite Bradley to come up with you and what it would mean if you did. You didnât even know what youâd be insinuating if you did invite him up, let alone how heâd take it. Were you ready to sleep with him? Was he ready for that? By the time he pulled into your lot, you were steadily developing a stress headache.Â
He parked the Bronco right in front of the doors leading into your foyer, so you wouldnât have to walk that far.
He reached the centre console and took your hand, and you turned to face him.
âSince weâre doing this properly,â he started. âIâm not coming up with you.â
You looked down, blush creeping across your cheeks. Had he been reading your mind? In the moment of silence that followed Bradleyâs declaration, your brain tried to ruin the fantastic night youâd had with self-deprecating thoughts. Briefly, your thoughts wandered back to the second half of your relationship with Elijah and how little sex youâd had, the fact that when you did have sex, it was always about him. It never even crossed his mind to go down on you, and you had to hope you finished before him because once he was done, it was always game over.Â
Bradley put a finger on your chin, tilting your head up so he could see your face.Â
âWhatâs wrong, sweetness?â
âNothing.âÂ
âWhereâd you go just then?â He pressed.Â
âIf you donât want to be with me like that, itâs okay.â You told him honestly.Â
His expression went from shock to anger and then hurt in the space of two seconds.Â
âWhy wouldnât I?â
âI donât know.â You murmured.Â
You tried to look away, but he kept his fingers on your chin, forcing you to look at him.Â
âListen to me. I want to be with you more than anything.â He told you truthfully. âBut I think we should go slow. I want to make sure we take things at the right pace.â
âThereâs no rushing something you want to last forever.â You repeated from that night on the beach.Â
âExactly that.â
You leaned over and kissed him slowly and sweetly in the spirit of not rushing things. There was no urgency, just passion. Now heâd reassured you, you knew he was right. You werenât ready to take the next step yet, and savouring the build-up was good. For all you knew, all these first times with Bradley might be your last.Â
âIâll walk you to the door.â Bradley mumbled against your lips.
âAre you sure youâre going to be able to resist coming up?â
His eyes darkened, and for a moment, you thought he might change his mind about not spending the night. âI can wait. Youâre worth it.â He said. âBut one of these days, I want you to wear that sundress for me again.â
âWhy?â You whispered.
âBecause I think itâs going to look so good on my bedroom floor.â
