the new Down the Rabbithole video is on Boatmurder and once again we must pause and offer our respects to Something Awful for being one of the most singularly influential websites of all time, but also because every time I'm revisiting forums lore I am impressed all over again at how ahead of the curve the SA username culture was. current year Tumblr username sensibility is about where SA was in 2006ish

I didn't expect Fredrik Knudsen to make a Dwarf Fortress video - and one about one of the most celebrated and talked about memes of the community - but I all here for it.

Had to compile my favorites of the replies I got on my comment from the latest Down The Rabbit Hole (context: in Dwarf Fortress there is a pregnancy mechanic, and apparently during one of the battles a war dog gave birth while fighting, and the newly born puppies joined in)

The tale of an (in)famous early Dwarf Fortress game played by goons of ye olde Something Awful forums. Very well recapped and told and still pretty amusing all these years later. (And still yeah pretty much how a fortress can go.)

For those unfamiliar with how a dwarf fortress can go, one highlight is the outer door being blocked by the body of a dead monarch butterfly in the middle of a wild agitated elephant attack.

I have to say, the Saga of Boatmurdered/Koganusab getting immortalised in the official soundtrack to the Steam release is utterly heartwarming

It’s been a fanmade tune for years but getting into the large scale game release is cherry
