The Highest Cost [Chapter Four] Dreamer [David]
Tumblr media
A/n: This chapter is shorter than the others. There's no David in this one, but there will be in the next chapter. Please enjoy.
The image above is Chibi Mia. I drew her.
Warning(s): dream sequence, gore, maggots, death, OC, short chapter.
No Minors Allowed!!
The sand was matte black. So black, the ocean waves appeared to glow a neon blue. Mia stood barefoot on the icy beach, staring out at the eerie phenomenon before her. She had no idea why, but one thing was for certain, she did not want to be there.
The air was light and silent like she was floating out in space. Mia raised her hand and snapped her fingers near her ears to test the sound, but she was right to assume that she could not hear. A sense of dread overcame her. Peering over her shoulder, she saw the boardwalk. Its ebony wood was strangely rotted and littered with holes, but she felt an allure to it, like it was safe.
With a tentative step back, Mia watched in horror as her footprint filled with a watered down red fluid that reminded her of blood. She tightened her jaw and sprinted up the stairs to the entrance of the seaside amusement park, leaving behind bloody impressions in the sand.
With lights so beautiful, the rides attracted Mia like a moth to flame. She ambled toward them, finding the carousel most captivating. It spun silently around and around as she approached, but there was something strange about it. Strips of hazard tape encircled the seats, all but one; a black and white bench with someone sitting on it.
As it passed in front of Mia, the ride came to a sudden stop and the lights died down, enveloping the person in shadows. Even though she told herself not to, she stepped onto the carousel and hesitantly walked over to the bench, having to squint. What she saw horrified her.
A body was slumped lifeless against the side and though it was human, it was unrecognizable. Its skull was visible, showing a visceral mess of torn flesh and muscle around the face, and its lips were missing, peeled back in a toothless grin.
Mia felt ill. She covered her nose even though there was no smell, and took a step back. A jerk beneath its torn and scruffy Van Halen t-shirt brought goosebumps to her arms. She swore that it was alive.
Despite the shock, she reached down to shake its arm. The body suddenly fell forward and a grumble of maggots poured out from beneath its shirt onto the floor in a heap; some fell onto her bare feet. Mia swiped at them in a panic, then let out a horrified scream. But it made no sound.
–
With a frightened jerk, Mia opened her eyes and darted them around the room. She was not on the cold beach anymore, or the amusement park for that matter, but in the hotel room she and her sister had rented. Tossing back the covers in a panic, she checked her bare feet to see that there were no maggots squirming between her toes. It was all a dream.
For fuck's sake.
Mia took an uneasy breath and fell back on the bed. What brought on that dream? The events of last night came flooding back, and she remembered the beer. No wonder her dream was so vivid. She swore to never drink again.
The sound of the bathroom door opening with a low creak pulled her from her thoughts as Cadence walked out, dressed for the day.
Her keen eyes noticed how pale her sister looked. She knew that when Mia stumbled in last night, she had been drinking. How drunk was beyond her, but one thing was for certain, she was in high spirits. Whoever this David was that she went out with must have left an impression on her.
“Do you need the bathroom?”
Mia shook her head. “I don't feel sick.”
Cadence was surprised. She hummed and walked over to her suitcase sitting on top of the dresser. Mia watched her for a moment, folding the clothes inside of it, then sighed.
“I think I had a nightmare.”
“Do you think it was a vision?” Cadence asked, peeking over her shoulder.
Honestly, Mia did not know. She shrugged.
“It was linked to the boardwalk, if it was. I'm not sure it meant anything, but it was frightening.”
Perhaps not, but Cadence did not want to dismiss it either.
“Tell me about it.”
Mia groaned. She would rather not, but if it somehow helped, then she would try to press through it. After telling Cadence in detail about what she saw, she waited in anticipation for her thoughts on the matter. Her sister looked unsure.
“That's…eerie. It's similar to the others though, in that it centers around death,” she opined.
“And it was more vivid,” Mia agreed.
Before, the visions were more like a slideshow; flashes of gruesome images. The nightmare she just had was a silent movie.
“For now, let's just say it's a coincidence brought on by the alcohol,” Cadence insisted. “If it happens again, then we'll know.”
Mia shook her head. Crawling out of bed, she trudged over to her suitcase, but heard Cadence gasp in shock. Her curious eyes turned to her.
“What happened to your hand?”
Turning her hand over, Mia noticed the red scratch marks and hummed. Her skin was a bit irritated, but it wasn't as bad as Cadence had made it.
“David scratched me.”
“With what? A garden fork?” Cadence blurted.
Mia snorted and turned up her eyes playfully.
“It was an accident - and completely my fault.”
“He's a kinky one,” Cadence jested.
Choosing not to humor her, Mia retrieved a pair of clothes from her suitcase and hurried to the bathroom for a shower. Their hotel funds had run out, so it would be a while before she would get to take a hot bath; the facility at the beach had one, but the water was lukewarm at best. It would do in a pinch, however.
Once she was done, the two packed their belongings and loaded the car, then drove to the boardwalk to earn some money. It was not as packed in the morning, but it did not matter; someone would surely bite. They always did.
In the evening, when the sun set and the delinquents came out to play, the sisters hurried back to their old Taurus like apprehensive shadows chasing the light. Their unpleasant encounter with the Surf Nazi Gang, not once but twice, had thrown a monkey wrench into the works of their usual scheme to earn money. While the boardwalk was lively during the morning, it was thriving at night. A wasted opportunity built on fear.
Mia sighed for the third time, ignoring the questioning glance her sister Cadence gave her through the rear view mirror before returning to her book. By the fourth time, she rested her bookmark between the pages, cutting Carrie White off from her telekinetic rampage at Ewen High, and peered over her shoulder at her.
“Are you bored?”
Bored was an understatement. Mia felt like the patchwork interior of the backseat was grafting onto her body. She had been still for too long.
“I hate those beach freaks,” Mia grumbled.
Hate was a strong word, but it was the right word.
“I mean, they have us by the short hairs, hiding out in our car when we could be at the boardwalk,” she added.
Cadence snorted. Her sister was the restless type. She had to be up and moving, or she would go insane. Or complain.
“I think you just want to see David again.”
Mia felt her face turn red. She shouldn't have felt embarrassed, but she was. He was a stranger; a stranger who convinced her to get onto a two-wheeled death trap and sent her anxiety sky high all in the same night, but also a stranger who plagued her mind.
A part of her wanted to deny the comment, but the other part wanted to embrace it. She did want to see David.
“I just want to have a little fun before we move on to Oregon,” she furthered.
Cadence sat her book in the passenger's seat.
“Why don't we then.”
Mia tightened her jaw.
“What if we run into those assholes?”
“It isn't ideal, but at least we'll be surrounded by people,” Cadence mentioned.
She was hesitant, it was not a chance she wanted to take, but there were shops she wanted to check out, shops that because she was working, she did not get to see. Like the bookstore for instance.
“No business tonight, just fun,” she added.
Mia sat up with a spring like she had been given a second wind and smiled widely.
“What are we waitin’ for?”
