Fun fact about these guys is that they’re a species complex. Boaedon capensis and Boaedon fuliginosus are the two more widespread species of this complex and the boundaries between these species are blurry. Is B. fuliginosus found in Kenya? Many experts say yes, but there is some uncertainty their exact range. Some papers have come out claiming they are restricted to Western Africa.
It’s an interesting and complicated debate to follow. There is even question about whether or not this complex is distinct from Boaedon lineatus (striped house snake). Chances are if you have a captive bred African house snake, the exact species of your snake is possibly unknown without genetic testing since there are intermediates between species within the complex. Unless, of course, you know the snake’s lineage and where in Africa their ancestors originated from.
I love talking about African house snakes. I’d love to have one someday! Hope you don’t mind the info dump lol.
What's a snake you wish was more common in captivity? As in, one that would make a good pet but just isn't particularly available or widespread?
Ooh, great question!
I am so so sad every day that woma pythons are so hard to find outside of Australia. When I've been to Australia to meet up with herpetologist friends, their woma pythons were universally absolute delights. Hardy, awesome snakes, and so beautiful, too! They're possible to find elsewhere but they're often prohibitively expensive.
Also, African house snakes! It's so hard to find these guys captive-bred in most areas, but everyone who's ever worked with them absolutely sings their praises. They're easy in terms of care, have great temperaments, and are generally all-around awesome pet snakes. The best pet snakes no one's ever heard of!

Brown house snake, also known as the Cape house snake (Boaedon capensis)
These beautiful snakes are ompletely harmless, they use muscle power to constrict their prey.
Like most snakes they vary in colour from light brown to reddish brown, Chocolate brown, tan and pink - with two white stripes on either side of the head.
Mainly active at nigh, preying on geckos, lizards, rodents, and birds.

Beautiful little brown house snake (Boaedon capensis) behind the compost bin this morning. The bhs is a harmless constrictor that's only a danger to the many skinks, geckos and toads in my garden #snakes https://www.instagram.com/p/CZrCf9Frpii/?utm_medium=tumblr

New babies arrived this morning. 1.1 Cape House Snakes. Even after shipping, these two were so active and curious, it was hard to get photos of them.
