So after Sir Nighteye's verdict that he couldn't approve of Izuku as the One for All successor, Izuku takes that as an insult to everything that he is. In other words, Izuku at this point in the manga recognized himself as a person through the roles of All Might's disciple and as the One for All successor.
There's a reason the Overhaul Arc is Izuku's most Touya kinnie arc. Young Touya believed the reason for his existence was to be his father's successor who would fulfill Endeavor's dream of defeating All Might. Touya viewed himself as a person through that lens. Then he slowly lost it after this role was given to someone else.
Izuku seemed rather emotionally unstable in the Overhaul Arc for a similar reason. Someone was trying to take away the role that he believed defined him as a person.
It's more speculative on my part, but if All Might had shown more interest in Mirio other than the dismissive attitude he had in canon, Izuku might have had some mini young Touya adjacent meltdowns...

Hero's Spirit: A Vision of Nightshade
All For One did not reach the age of over 200 by not listening to his medical professionals.
He was still looking for a faster way to regain his full vision, but until then the Doctor had recommended him using a cyberpathy quirk to look through security cameras and such, so he wouldn't be out of practice with light levels, colors, and shape recognition.
He didn't enjoy it, because he disliked having his consciousness out of his body (at least unless it was going to be a permanent transfer). But he recognized the value of the Doctor's orders and did a few short bursts a day.
During one of these he noticed Tomura's little rival, Midoriya. (He would allow it until All Might finally chose a successor, then he'd encourage Tomura to switch over.) Midoriya was talking to a young woman on the sidewalk he seemed to know, who was speaking to him fondly. Maybe she had been his baby sitter when younger, or a neighbor? He focused the camera in on her.
She was beautiful, with long dark hair and purple eyes and lips that made a stark contract over pale skin. All For One felt his pulse quicken through his weak connection to his body as his heart pounded in his chest. His mouth when dry and his palms began to sweat. What was this feeling? It had been so long since he felt it? Ah, right. Abject Terror.
He slammed back in to his body and immediately opened the communication like to the League of Villain's current hideout.
"Shigeraki Tomura you will immediately cease any activity targeting Midoriya and any focusing one UA class 1A that might involve him." Tomura, predictably, did not like this announcement. "No! You said I could destroy the things I hate! And I HATE him."
"Tomura if you continue this vendetta we will both die."
"This is stupid! I'm not afraid of All Might-" "Nor am I. He is a pathetic worm that will one day die at your hand. But Midoriya is under the protection of Nightshade." Fear shone in speaking her name.
"Never heard of a hero by that name." Tomura began scratching at his neck.
"Not a hero, no." Kurogiri tilted his head in thought. "Was Nightshade not the name of the first villain?"
"It was. It is. I knew her well, as we had been allies for a time. She didn't seek power, but wielded it effortlessly. Personal power, power over others. She had amassed an army of those with powerful quirks even at the dawn of them and laid waste to the United States. She had been fond of the first hero, you see, though he was never credited as such. And the American Government not only killed him, they covered up all he had done, to ensure he was forgotten and their mistake never came to light. She crippled the country which at the time boasted the strongest military force in the world." "But she was stopped. I mean, America's still a country."
All For One shook his head. "No. She stopped when anyone even tangentially involved in the decision and those who defended them were dead. No quirk affected her, and he quirk could not be stolen. She is an untouchable wildcard who will slaughter thousands to make her point. She has chosen Midoriya as hers. Do Not Touch Midoriya Again!"

Genuinely what other interpretation could you give this other than Bakugou holding up and supporting Izuku's dream when it starts to waver and he stuggles to keep it together on his own. And that Katsuki is the only person who loves Izuku that much to be there for him on such an intimate level. His friends, his family, his teachers, they're all important to him but they are not the one and only Kacchan Bakugou.
I diagnose you both with terminal yaoi.

A thought that I keep making Endeavour have, that keeps stalling my attempts to write him:
Enji is not a fanciful man, but sometimes he entertains the idea that Midoriya Izuku is a demon summoned from hell to make his life difficult.

That smile that Bruce has in his final moments really make me think he already passed OFA and already knew his successor was going to strengthen the quirk rather than fight straight away. So he knew the quirk would be safe and they had some advantage over afo
Tumblr media
Yeah, he did pass it on before fighting AFO; every OFA wielder managed to pass it on before their death by AFO's hand. Only Banjo and En (excluding All Might and Midoriya) still held it when they fought AFO, so Bruce would've been like the others: fighting with the Ability/Quirk already passed on.
For reference, the excerpt from that volume extra with Banjo's face on it;
"All the predecessors besides the Fourth were indeed killed by All For One, but each one managed to pass on the Quirk before their death."
All For One killed them. But they passed on the Quirk before they faced him.
But also, Shinomori went into hiding to avoid society, I don't think he'd actually join the fight of the Resistance when they're fighting AFO's side—he's at the top of their chaotic land. It's a fight with the one who governs current society. The "demon lord". Most of the Resistance died with Kudo, so Bruce fighting AFO was either with whoever was left, or he was completely alone, and those are old corpses.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At Bruce's fight and eventual death with AFO, I think he might've gone back to where Kudo and the rest died. Whether he did or not, he took the last members with the Resistance for a last stand, if any remained. They probably did have some left; Kudo shouldn't have left Bruce to fight him and continue OFA, with no one on his side. Cruel, and a small platform for Bruce to stand on. The platform of the vestiges was already small compared to AFO when doing a symbolism of the power difference. Imagine Bruce on his own.
(This was when Nana and Yoichi pushed AFO+AFO/Tomura out of the vestige world)
Tumblr media
Plus, since the Resistance started out of "our Leader [having] misgivings about the future", Kudo wouldn't have brought everyone to fight AFO. If he did, the Resistance ends right there; there has to be a chance their will and cause continues into the future, neverminding Bruce and OFA. I don't mean Yoichi's will here—I mean the Resistance's. Don't bring everyone to the death march.
But look at how we only see two others when Bruce died, and even after Bruce is clearly dead, AFO still tries getting an answer from him. He wouldn't have left any survivors in this fight, let alone Kudo's.
Since Shinomori got OFA when he was 22, I think he and Bruce had been something of colleagues before, especially since Bruce knew where to find him in the forests. Since Shinomori had run into the hermit life to escape society and its weirdos, citing it as a "horrible era"
Bruce could just trust him with it and ran back to the city. He knew where to find him, they're close in age, one decided to fight to restore society while the other ran from it for what it became...
He didn't choose a member of the Resistance. But Bruce made a smart choice for who the next successor would be. He chose fast (enough that AFO was still mad about Kudo and Yoichi to bother interrogating a corpse), and chose the guy who:
● lives off the radar
● has a will against AFO/society, driven enough that he went off to hide
● has an Ability that senses danger, so he can always escape or be warned in time
● can evade AFO and his influence repeatedly
● is cautious, if not careful
● isn't tempermental to go get himself killed, with enough fear to know to step back
● would be unknown and non-existent to AFO, because he avoids society, where the big evil lurks
Shinomori knew the instant he received the Quirk that he wasn't strong enough. Bruce would have to have been present to at least pass it on, so Bruce probably knew Shinomori's decision too, to build up the will.
Tumblr media
Until En with his hair, each transfer was probably blood, since that was the OG method between Yoichi and Kudo that worked for sure.
When Bruce passed it to Shinomori, he chose a guy who didn't have an offensive Ability like him or Kudo (who managed to use his offensively when it was just small objects at his time). He chose a guy who could keep the wielder and Quirk safe, and would pass it on once he was done with his turn. I don't know if they knew Quirks stockpiled in OFA, but if they did, Bruce made a smart choice. If they knew or not, Bruce still chose well to ensure the will continued into the future, away from AFO's reach.
So yeah. Bruce passed One For All before fighting All For One, and likely knew Shinomori's intention. The reason he smiled could've been because he knew AFO would take another loss today, but the only details we got of his death are few. He smiled, fought, and died impaled, with dead comrades around, and AFO trying to get an answer out of him for Yoichi's whereabouts.
I'm still curious on why Bruce smiled because there are reasons we could put together, and reasons we don't know. Was it because he got one over AFO? Did he enjoy the fight? Because he was facing death in the face and couldn't help but smile? Because somewhere, One for All was growing to screw AFO over in the future? We don't know much of the fight's details itself beyond [AFO participated] and [Bruce was killed].
(Remembering how Bruce's Ability works just puts his fight against AFO as even more desperate or dire, really. He temporarily charges energy, but can only release it per limb once [ex. Midoriya still having a leg of Fa Jin]. So like when Midoriya used his individual fingers, Bruce only gets one shot for each body part he can think of. His strength with OFA isn't as much as it could be either, because he isn't the wielder anymore. All he has are the leftover fumes.)

Mirio's became the number one hero after all...

Assuming Mirio started working with Sir Nighteye at the beginning of his second year, then Mirio's had been doing his work study a year and a half. The Overhaul Arc takes place in the beginning of UA's second term. And the earliest time hero students typically took the provisional license exam was before their second year, so that is the earliest Mirio could have started.
If Sir Nighteye had Mirio intern with him after his first sports festival, he might have had this scheme to make Mirio the One for All successor for the past two years or so. This timeline seems accurate since Nedzu made his offer to have Mirio be the successor before All Might met Izuku.
All Might chose Izuku around 15-16 months prior to this point in the timeline (10 months training and then half the school year). So All Might started training Izuku around the same time Sir Nighteye began working intensively with Mirio beyond a brief internship.
This timeline adds a few layers to Sir Nighteye's frustration with All Might. Also, what's interesting is that despite his concerns with All Might maintaining his legacy, Sir Nighteye also waited until the last minute. Sir Nighteye wanted a readymade successor that could take over as symbol immediately. He knew about the prophesy concerning All Might's death for the past 6 years. But based on the most probable timeline, Sir Nighteye waited 3-4 years before starting his attempted successor scheme.

"Shut up and watch me."
Tomura Shigaraki x Reader
It’s cold, hot, and painful at the same time. Every single cell in his body, from the top of his head to the soles of his feet, are being changed. Electricity. Chemicals. Aches from augmentation shake him to his very core. Without a doubt, this is the hardest time of Shigaraki’s life. Most people would have broken by now, but not him. He’s got something stronger holding him in place. However, it’s not the bitterness nor is it the hatred that keeps him clinging to life and sanity in the empty darkness of Garaki’s lab.
Instead, it’s the memory of his first night in the newly unified PLF. He was tired and weak after his extended bout with Gigantomachia, not to mention the face off with all of the Meta Liberation Front. When he collapsed into your arms, the first thing he thought was that your warmth felt nice. The first time he was able to wrap his arms around you without fear, without anything. His arms were trembling, his leg was broken, he was covered in blood…but he felt no fear or hesitation.
Outside of the minimal medical care he accepted from Re-Destro, he didn’t allow any of his sent attendants to tend to him. You were all he wanted and needed. Shigaraki remembers the full relaxation of the warm water of the tub as you gently washed his newly snow white hair, how you carefully tipped his head back so none of the water would get in his eyes. The way the blood, sweat, and dirt flowed down the drain along with his tension. Every so often he would catch your hand with his and trace along your knuckles and palm wordlessly, ignoring your chiding about not getting the bandages on his fingers wet. Shigaraki couldn’t remember a time where he felt so safe as he did when you towel-dried his hair and helped him into fresh pajamas. When he finally settled down, he pulled you into the bed with him. It must have surprised you how much strength such a skinny, fatigued young man still had in him– the look on your face was priceless. He wrapped his arms around you and pressed his face into your neck, and just…breathed. You smelled of the same soap, so why did it smell so much better on you, he wondered. Limbs tangled together underneath brand-new linens on a large bed, the sound of your breathing and his lifting up and down. Despite his fatigue, it took him longer to fall asleep than you did.
This is where he returns during the times when either the pain gets to be too much, or perhaps when Garaki decides it’s time to let him rest. He just wanted to watch you a little bit longer, to stroke your face and ears with his hands and see you wrinkle your nose in your sleep from the disturbances. He couldn’t remember when he fell asleep, just that he was awoken by bright sunlight kissing his face and the weight of your figure against his. No more hesitation, no more holding back--
“Tomura Shigaraki…” A familiar, cloyingly sweet voice interferes with his memory. The voice of his teacher, his mentor, and the only father figure he’s ever known: All For One. “What are you doing?”
He’s never liked being interrupted, and even his teacher is no exception to this fact. Shigaraki narrows his eyes and attempts to silence the voice in his head, wanting to nestle into the memory of you once again. However, this voice has other plans.
“I asked you a question. What are you doing, Tomura Shigaraki?” There’s an air of paternal dissatisfaction in his tone.
“I’m busy, Sensei.” He snips back in his head. He’s not sure whether this phantom is of his memories, a side-effect of all the experimentation being done on him, or if this is his teacher’s true voice, but it doesn’t matter. He’s in the way.
“Have you forgotten your true purpose, Tomura?” All For One questions, and Shigaraki knows intuitively that he’s referring to you. “Are you giving up on all that we have worked for?”
“I haven’t given up on anything.” His arms, even in this mix of a dream and memory, tighten around you. He hasn’t given up on a single thing. As a matter of a fact, he feels as though he’s gained more things than he’d previously thought.
“Such attachments do not suit you, my boy.” All For One chides him in the same way he used to when he was a child: speaking to him in a soft voice with just the hint of a smile in it, laughing at his supposed ignorance. “If it is companionship you wish for, you’ll have more than you ever dream, all at your beck and call. Do you truly need this one?”
He can almost feel his teacher’s grip on his shoulder, as if to pull him away from you. “You don’t need this. This emotion is fleeting, worthless in the grand scheme of things.” The other hand moves towards his, positioning his other hand over your sleeping face. “Get rid of it.” Get rid of them.
“You’re wrong, Sensei.”
Shigaraki grabs the ghost of a hand, a little surprised he’s able to, but keeps a firm, threatening grip. Instead of disintegrating you, even the memory of you, he turns his attention back on All For One. “This is one thing I won’t let anyone touch…not even you.” The ghost hand disintegrates with his touch, dissolving into nothing. Shigaraki gives a long, hard stare out of the corner of his red eyes as his teacher’s disembodied voice echoes behind him…still present, but much farther away.
“This isn’t over.” All For One’s voice is the same as ever, lilting and coy. “You’ll see that I’m correct soon enough.” His last whisper finally fades into nothing.
Shigaraki settles back into his memories, his warm place of comfort and belonging.
You’re wrong, Sensei. He thinks, and commits to memory a phrase he will say again and again. I do not want to be you, I want to be greater than you. I’ll have everything I want… Shigaraki strokes the back of your cheek with his hand. He’ll prove that he can: he can have you, his comrades, and the society he’s dreamed of. Tomura Shigaraki will destroy what he wants to destroy, anything that stands in his way…
Even you, Sensei…
Tomura Shigaraki closes his eyes, even in his current state, and slowly falls into unconsciousness.
So shut up and watch me.
