Day 23: "Your hands are freezing!" Fandom: My Hero Academia Pairing: Mezou Shouji x Reader

It was one of those bitterly cold days when the chill seemed to seep into your bones, even when you were wrapped in layers of clothing. The wind howled outside, the snow falling heavily, covering the ground in a soft, white blanket. You had just finished a mission with the class and were walking back to the dorms when you realized your hands were practically numb from the cold.

You had forgotten your gloves at the last moment, and now your fingers ached as they stiffened in the freezing air.

“Your hands are freezing!” Mezou Shouji’s voice was soft, but there was a sense of urgency behind it as he stepped in front of you. He had noticed your discomfort immediately, and though you tried to brush it off, his worry was palpable.

“I’m fine, really,” you protested weakly, shaking your hands a little to try to warm them up.

Shouji wasn’t convinced. Without a word, he gently took your hands in his, his multiple arms coming to life around him as they wrapped around yours to shield them from the cold. You shivered at the sudden warmth that spread through you, feeling his warmth seep into your frozen skin.

“Don’t lie to me,” he said, his voice low, a softness you hadn't expected in his words. “I can feel how cold you are.”

The act was so simple, yet so intimate. He wasn’t just offering warmth; he was offering care, an unspoken promise to protect you, and it warmed your heart more than you could explain.

“Thank you, Mezou,” you whispered, the gratitude evident in your tone. You could feel the warmth spreading from his hands, slowly starting to ease the cold tension in your own.

“You don’t need to thank me,” he said, his voice quiet but sincere. “I’ll always take care of you.” He smiled softly, a rare and genuine moment from the usually stoic Shouji.

As you both stood there, huddled together against the cold, the world around you seemed to fade away. For just that moment, all that mattered was the comfort of his touch and the warmth of his care.

Shoji’s lack of response seemed to make the world freeze. Or maybe everything is going faster? Spinning. You’re mind is spiralling, that’s what this feeling is.

As soon as the request was spoken into existence, you regretted it. Never had Shoji made you uncomfortable, he loved that about you, you were never so much as apprehensive around him. But now, you fidget and tense at his (intense) gaze. Shoji’s eyes flicked over to the window looking over the dorm’s courtyard, but not looking at anything in particular. Just a minute ago you wanted to run away and die in a corner, and now you just want him to look at you.

“I.. I didn’t mean—“

“It’s okay,” Shoji finally emerged from his trance, though only for a second. “It’s just…”

You held your breath, waiting for something, anything to ease your racing thoughts that tried to think of how to go back in time and tell yourself to shut the fuck up.

“I’m not from the cities. I know how my appearance makes people feel, my hometown made sure of that,” he says softly, almost inaudible, still not looking at you. “I don’t want… I don’t want you to—“

“I’m not scared of you,” you didn’t mean to say that. You tried to think of something else to say, anything to make him believe you. But all you could muster was a hand on his thigh.

Shoji turned his head to look at your hand, and with a deep breath he continued, “I know. I’m just…”

He finally looks at you again, “I’m not exactly nice to look at. I thought I’d always be— I don’t know, I didn’t think anyone would want—“ he gestures to his face. “… this.”

Without thinking, you swung your legs over to sit on his lap. Shoji chokes out something akin to a gasp, but does not object when your arms move to embrace him. Shoji’s hands almost seem to shake as he slowly lifts his arms to return the gesture.

It was short lived, however, when Shoji pulled away, and after a moment of thought, reached to his mask. Your hands follow his to grasp the hem of his mask and pull it over his head. For a moment you still can’t see as his hair hangs over his face. When you brushed the hair away, Shoji didn’t know what he expected from you. He searched your face for any suggestion of uncertainty or regret, but all he found was your beautiful smile.

You have come across Shouji before. Working in the infirmary under Recovery Girl meant that you saw old and new faces all the time. However, he was definitely someone who stood out, and not just physically. He was personable and considerate which for someone with his stature was surprising but not unwelcome.

The two of you had many interactions due to what he had gone through in training and especially when you found out who his teacher was. It was no surprise when he would come in every once in a while with a gash here and cuts there.

What you didn't know was that he had been doing it slightly on purpose. Coming to you whether he had a gash or even a small cut that he could have treated himself.

The door to the infirmary slowly opened, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps. Even without looking, you could assume it was Mezo by the sound of him walking.

He walked in, glancing around the room for a quick moment before his eyes landed on you. He paused for a second, caught off guard that it was just you and him in there. But, he quickly composed himself and walked a little closer.

"Is Recovery Girl here?" His voice was a little deeper than usual, though it's most likely due to his previous exhaustions. The way he leaned against the wall was another sign. He was trying his best to seem casual in his appearance.

But you could easily tell he was on edge. You glanced over to him from your desk, your eyes lighting up slightly. “Oh, Shouji, hey! No she's not, she just went on her break, is there something i can help you with?” You begin walking over to him curiously.

The news that Recovery Girls was gone was probably the last thing he wanted to hear. Mezo mentally cursed, feeling a bit nervous knowing he was going to be technically alone with you for the first time.

He tried to keep a calm expression as he looked down at you. "Oh…I just need a new bandage. Got cut up again during training…"

You nodded, motioning him over to sit on one of the beds. “Come sit, I'll be right back.” Mezo silently complied, moving over to sit on the edge of the bed. As he did, the bed creaked a little under his weight. Which was not surprising considering he was a 6’2”ft man, and muscular.

He remained quiet, silently watching you go get the supplies you’ll be using to treat him. Once you returned, you crouched down a bit, assessing his wounds. Mezo still sat there quietly, he didn’t even protest or complain about the disinfection you’d be applying. He just sat there, staring as you worked.

You gently began taking care of his injuries. “Okay, this might tingle a bit” You hovered your hands over the damaged area, using your quirk to lessen the tension and bruising throughout his muscle and skin.

Shouji felt himself instantly relax as the stinging feeling from his cuts slowly faded. His shoulders dropped a little, letting his guard down. Though the feeling didn’t last long, as he tensed back up as realization hit him. He just had your hands on his arm and he could feel how soft they were.

Once you were done, you stood up fully, meeting his gaze. “Feel okay? Anything I missed?” Shouji slowly stood up, testing out the feeling of his arm. To say he was impressed was an understatement, he didn’t feel a thing. He flexed his arm a few times to make sure there was no pain or restriction. “Yeah, I feel fine. Can’t even feel the pain anymore.”

Your eyes gleamed happily towards him, “Great! I'm so glad I could help again, Shouji.” You thought you could see a slight tilt under the mask that adorned his face. You always wondered what was under it..

Shouji entered the nurse's office. He's here for a basic checkup, just as a precaution. He glanced around the room searching for a familiar face he'd recognised. He spots you and quietly approaches, "Hi, Y/N", his voice slightly muffled since he was wearing a mask.

You look up at him, smiling softly "Oh hey Shouji! Here for your preliminary check up?” Shouji nodded as he took a seat on a nearby chair. You were curious, you could tell that there was something on his mind, since he had been constantly glancing away from you anytime you looked at him.

“Great, I'll just have to log your height, weight, blood pressure and check your mobility.” He gave you a quick okay, standing up and doing as you needed him to. The check up was going smoothly, checking off all of your needed boxes to continue. As you were reaching the end of the exam, recovery girl got back from her break, sending you a small smile.

“Why hello dear Y/N. Doing check ups?” Her voice reached your ears as you glanced down at her with a grin. “Yes ma’am, almost finished.” She nodded before heading back to her desk.

“Alright Shouji, you’re all checked out. All of your records seem stable” You send him a smile, looking into his eye as you hold the clipboard close to your chest. "That's good to hear.." Shouji begins to follow your lead to the exit of the office, letting out a quiet sigh of relief.

As the two of you were about to part ways, he shouted for you uncharacteristically, gaining your attention immediately. “Y/N! Wait can i…um. Could I please get your number or uh something?” Seeing the behemoth of a man act to shy around you was truly fascinating, however you couldn't focus on anything else but the words that had emitted from him. “My number?”

He nodded sheepishly, “Yes. I-i would like to know if you would want to plan to hang out at some point outside of school.” Thank god for the mask he had worn otherwise you’d see the raging blush crawling up his neck and onto his scarred face.

You shut the door behind you, hoping recovery girl wouldn't overhear the two of you too much. All you could do was nod and exchange numbers feverishly. After that, it was quick goodbyes, nothing in your mind but the interaction that had taken place.

You went on with the rest of your day being clouded with the thoughts of him and the prospect of seeing each other together…alone. It was enough to get you kicking your feet an hour before your ‘Date-not-date’ as you had stated to him in the texts prior.

The date(not-date) was a blur. Everything had gone smoothly and perfectly until it had gotten dark and he had offered to walk you home. A comfortable silence draped over the two of you as the sound of your feet echoed throughout the ground. Shouji had his hands stuffed in his pockets as he walked next to you. Listening to you talk about your job and just letting out a hum here and there. His dark black eyes focused straight ahead to avoid making eye contact.

"Hm, you're way too humble.. You don't give yourself nearly enough credit, you’re admirable." He spoke, turning his head slightly to glance down at you. You shrug, “Guess not, but the credit is in the work y'know?”

"Suppose that's one way of putting it," He let out a soft chuckle. A few moments of silence pass by before Mezo speaks again. His voice was a little more quiet and low than usual. "..I meant what I said though.. About the 'admirable' thing," He mumbled, glancing down at the ground again, "You're an admirable person, and a hard worker, not many people can say they have those both. If im being honest.. You were always my favorite nurse."

You feel your face heat up a bit as you try looking straight ahead. “Well thanks then, I can say the same about you though with being a hero and all.”

He let out another hum as a light pink dusted across his face as well, "Not sure there's anything admirable about me," He paused for a moment, his gaze still focused straight ahead, "Though I appreciate the compliment.. It means a lot."

You nudged his side, earning a chuckled groan from him as you caught his eye. “Aw c'mon there's totally a lot to admire about you. You're strong, compassionate, strong willed and kind. Now not many can say that they have that going for them right?”

Shouji paused as he heard your words. His gaze darted over to you briefly, before he turned his head to the side. His face grew a tiny bit redder, not used to getting compliments like this. "..Well, when you say it like that," He mumbled, hiding a shy smile behind his mask, "I guess I can kinda see what you mean."

“There ya go” You chuckled. “And, if i'm being honest as well.. you’re my favorite patient.” You smiled up at him, noticing the way his eyes widened.

But before any more small talk could begin, you had reached your house melancholily. “Well this is my cue to go.” Shouji stopped walking along with you once the two of you reached your front door. He let out a tired sigh as he nodded his head slowly. "Guess you're gonna be headed inside then, huh," He stuffed his large hands into his pockets again, "You need me to wait for you to get in?"

You shook your head, “All is good” You fumble with your fingers, thinking over your words for a second. “Hey Shou, could you lean down? I wanna ask you something”

Upon hearing your request, Mezo gave you a confused look, but complied. He leaned down slightly so that he’s more at your level. "What did you want to ask me?" He asked curiously.

You pecked his masked cheek quickly, shuffling away to the door of your home before yelling out a curt ‘Goodnight!’.

Shouji’s body froze as your lips came in contact with his masked skin. His eyes widened as you pulled back. You could faintly see the blush on his face had darkened. "G- goodnight.." He stuttered, lifting one of his hands to gently touch the now kissed area.

It took Shouji’s brain a few seconds to finally process what had just happened. As he stood there dumbfounded, slowly lifting his head back upright.

When reality finally hit him, he let out a loud flustered noise. Before quickly covering his face with his large hands, trying to hide the extremely red blush covering his cheeks.
