On August 12, 2022, Robert Allen pleaded guilty to robbery with a firearm and to the lesser conviction of second-degree murder in a plea deal in exchange for his testimony against the others.

Boatwright, Newsome, and Williams were convicted of first degree murder and robbery with a firearm at their trial on March 20, 2023. On April 6, 2023, Newsome and Williams were sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole; Boatwright received two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus another consecutive 30 years in prison.[7][8][9][10]

On May 17, 2023, Robert Allen was sentenced to 7 years in prison with credit for time served, plus 20 years probation after he is released.[5][6]

Murder

Boatwright, Newsome, Williams and Allen had been driving around, finding a potential victim to steal from, and Williams recognized Jahseh Onfroy, so the four tracked and targeted him. The four eventually trapped Onfroy in his own car with their rental car, and Boatwright and Newsome robbed Onfroy, reaching for Onfroy's chain and stealing his Louis Vuitton bag containing $50,000 US bills. Boatwright then walked one or two feet back and shot him six times, killing him.[14][15][16]

The murder was premeditated. Investigators determined Williams had been in a probation office the same time as Onfroy in January 2018, and recognized Onfroy's car the day of the murder, which Robert Allen confirmed in a police interview. As the perpetrators were driving in the rental Dodge Journey, Williams spotted Onfroy's car in the RIVA Motorsports parking lot and told the other perpetrators that they should go into the dealership to confirm that it was actually Onfroy.[17][18]

At 3:30 p.m. EDT, Onfroy arrived at RIVA Motorsports and entered with his step-uncle, Leonard Kerr.[19] Security camera footage showed that Robert Allen and Dedrick Williams then followed Onfroy inside the store,[20][19] and walked right past Onfroy as he was browsing motorcycles. They are recorded coming into RIVA and buying two black masks.[21] Nearly half an hour later, Onfroy left the dealership, entered his black BMW i8[22] and began to drive away from the dealership. The SUV drove in front of Onfroy's car, blocking his only exit from the dealership while Newsome and Boatwright exited the vehicle and demanded property from Onfroy with firearms in hand. A brief struggle ensued, in which Boatwright and Newsome punched Onfroy several times, and Newsome began demanding Onfroy's chain. Amid the struggle, Onfroy's step-uncle fled the car, leaving the door open. The struggle continued with Onfroy being in a state of confusion, yelling, "What is this for?" After failing to retrieve the chain from Onfroy's neck, Newsome then ran to get into Onfroy's car on the passenger side where the door was left open. Newsome entered the passenger side of the vehicle and stole Onfroy's Louis Vuitton bag, containing $50,000, and ran back to the Dodge Journey.[23] Despite the robbery being over, Boatwright walked back one or two feet away from Onfroy's vehicle, held his rifle, looked Onfroy in the eyes, and fired multiple shots, murdering him.[24] The perpetrators then fled the scene in the Dodge Journey. Accomplice Robert Allen stated at the other three perpetrators' trial that after the murder, Newsome asked Boatwright why he shot Onfroy, with Boatwright responding that he tried to grab his gun, though Boatwright's alleged claim was never supported. Onfroy was later pronounced dead around 5:30 p.m. that same day.[25][26][27]

The shooting occurred east of the city of Parkland where Onfroy was living at the time.[28][29] The Broward County Fire Department rushed him to the nearby Broward Health North.[30] Paramedics were able to briefly revive a pulse, but it was never regained. Onfroy was initially reported to be in critical condition following the shooting,[31] but the Broward County Sheriff's Office later confirmed his death.[32]

On June 20, 2018, the Broward County Sheriff's Office arrested 22-year-old Dedrick Devonshay Williams in connection with Onfroy's murder.[34] Williams was driving in his silver 2004 Honda before a traffic stop occurred.[35] Williams was detained in the car chase that followed.[36] Williams was identified by clothing he wore on June 18, which included orange sandals and a white tank top. The police matched images from security footage to recent pictures from Williams' Instagram feed, which featured "the same or similar bright orange sandals". He was also identified by employees who said they saw him enter RIVA Motorsports to buy a neoprene mask.[37] After Williams' arrest, two more active warrants were issued.[35][38]

On June 27, 22-year-old Robert Allen was named as a person of interest in the case, and was later arrested on July 26.[39]

On July 5, 22-year-old Michael Boatwright was arrested by the Broward County Sheriff's Office on drug-related charges, but on July 10, Boatwright was visited by detectives while in jail and was presented with his arrest warrant for premeditated first-degree murder.[40] Boatwright had searched for "accessory to murder" and "XXXTentacion" on his phone's web browser after the murder. The former search term was later revealed by Allen to be because Boatwright was incorrectly reassuring Allen that he could only be charged with accessory to murder since Allen was not the triggerman.[41] Boatwright was determined to be the one who fatally shot Onfroy.[42] The three men were later indicted by a grand jury, alongside a fourth, for Onfroy's murder.[43] [44]

On August 7, 20-year-old Trayvon Newsome was arrested.[44]

Legal proceedings Dedrick Williams was charged with dangerous and depraved first-degree murder and probation violation, and was denied bail.[45][46][47][48] On June 25, he pleaded not guilty.[49] Williams had been arrested multiple times prior.[citation needed]

During Williams's interrogation, he reportedly went from denying he was involved in the killing to remorse, saying it had cost him "sleepless nights" and that he did not confess earlier due to fear of being labeled a "snitch".[50]

On July 10, Michael Boatwright was arrested and charged with premeditated first-degree murder. According to the Broward County Sheriff's Office, Boatwright was initially arrested on unrelated drug charges on July 5 before he was formally charged with Onfroy's murder on July 10.[51]

On July 25, a third suspect, Robert Allen, 22, was taken into custody and charged with premeditated first-degree murder after U.S. Marshals found him at his sister's house in rural Georgia. He was booked in Dodge County, Georgia and was held without bond on a warrant from the Broward County Sheriff's Office.[52]

On August 7, the Broward County Sheriff's Office announced on Twitter that Trayvon Newsome, 20, was taken into custody shortly before 5:00 p.m. EST and had been booked on charges of premeditated first-degree murder and robbery with a deadly weapon.[53][54]

Jahseh Onfroy's father, Dwayne Onfroy, has stated that he wants the death penalty for the suspected shooter and life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the suspected accomplices.[20] Since the suspects are being charged in Florida, if convicted of first-degree murder, they would have been eligible for capital punishment.[55] However, the prosecution decided to seek life in prison without the possibility of parole over the death penalty.

On August 12, 2022, Robert Allen pleaded guilty to the lesser conviction of second-degree murder in exchange for testimony against the other three defendants.[56]

In October 2022, Boatwright's attorneys began to claim that he is incompetent to stand trial and requested that psychological experts be appointed to determine Boatwright's legal competence.[57] Boatwright was declared mentally competent to stand trial.[58][59]

Trial Main article: XXXTentacion murder trial After Boatwright's attorneys requested a psychological evaluation for him before a trial, he was evaluated and ruled competent to stand trial. Trial judge Michael Usan ruled on January 17, 2023 that Onfroy's past criminal history and personal character are irrelevant to the crime and will not be permitted subjects at trial.[60] The trial initiated on February 7, 2023.[61][62][63][64] Robert Allen had previously taken a plea deal for second-degree murder for his testimony against Boatwright, Newsome, and Williams. Boatwright's attorney claimed in his opening that the fact that Boatwright searched "accessory to murder" proved he was innocent, but this was later disproven by Allen, who said that Boatwright searched it because he misinformed Allen that Allen could only be charged with accessory rather than actual murder.[65] A DNA analyst testified that Boatwright's DNA on the mask used in the murder was rarer than one in 929 nonillion.[66]

On March 20, 2023, the eighth day of jury deliberations, Boatwright and his two other co-defendants were found guilty on all counts. Boatwright made headlines for the fact that he blew a kiss to XXXTentacion's family after he was found guilty, with much of the public expressing disgust for Boatwright's conduct.[67][68] On April 6, 2023, his two co-defendants were sentenced to a term of life in prison without the possibility of parole, while Boatwright received two consecutive terms of life-without-parole, plus another consecutive 30 years.[69][70][71][72] The presiding judge Michael Usan expressed his condemnation of Boatwright at his sentencing, stating to him,

You turned a robbery into a murder. And on that day when you stood there and fired that weapon, you didn't just end one life. You effectively ended five lives, including your own ... You will spend the rest of your life in prison. From here you will go and be placed in a cell that has a stainless steel slab attached to the wall. That's your bed. And next to it is a stainless steel sink and a stainless steel toilet. That's the furniture that you have in that cell. You'll spend every hour, and every day, and every week, and every year of your life in that cell. And one day, they'll come and open up that cell in the morning and you'll have passed on. And only on that day will you have served your sentence.[73]

He attended multiple high schools such as J. P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs and Northeast High School in Oakland Park, before being transferred to Pine Ridge Alternative Center in Fort Lauderdale due to behavioral issues. He dropped out of Pine Ridge during tenth grade.[76]

Boatwright was arrested multiple times prior to the murder of XXXTentacion, mainly on drug charges. In 2013, he was arrested in Broward County for assault or battery on specified officials or employees. The same year, he was arrested again for selling cocaine or heroin within 1,000 feet of a school zone. For these charges, he was put on community control.

In 2015, Boatwright was arrested again for possession of cannabis and PVP, which also counted as a violation of his community control. Boatwright had already been in jail for an arrest on unrelated charges related to cocaine possession with intent to distribute before he was charged with the murder of Jahseh Onfroy.[77][78][79]

Boatwright is affiliated with the Florida ZMF gang.[74]

On April 6, 2023, he was sentenced to two consecutive sentences of life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus another 30 years consecutive for other charges.[80]

He had a significant past criminal record, which included offenses such as grand theft auto, burglary, theft, and assault. He was on probation by the time the murder of XXXTentacion occurred. He is affiliated with the ZMF gang, and was known to gang members and his friends as "Chucky".[74]

On April 6, 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Allen is the only one of the four perpetrators to have apologized for his role in the murder.

On May 17, 2023, Allen was sentenced to 7 years in prison with credit for time served, plus a consecutive 20 years probation.

Reaction

Onfroy's mausoleum Following the announcement of Onfroy's murder, a makeshift memorial was quickly created by fans and local residents, consisting of lyrics from the artist and words of remembrance written in chalk stretching up to a hundred yards. The owner of RIVA Motorsports, where XXXTentacion was killed, held a vigil on June 18, 2018.[81] Hundreds gathered during the vigil and Broward County Sheriffs were forced to close the street.[11] Shortly after, a walk commenced between Onfroy's fans.[11] Onfroy's house in Parkland, Florida, which was being built at the time, was also memorialized by fans.[82][83]

Internet personality Adam22, the creator of the podcast No Jumper for which Onfroy had his first professional interview, held a memorial a day after Onfroy's death in front of his BMX retail store OnSomeShit on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles to a crowd of 354 people.[84][85] The crowd eventually grew to over 1,000 and police in riot gear eventually appeared with police en route to disperse the crowd.[86] According to reports, rubber bullets were shot and tear gas was used to disperse the crowd.[87]

An open casket service for Onfroy took place at BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida, on June 27, where fans were allowed to pay their respects.[88][89] His private funeral took place a day later, where rappers Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Yachty, Lil Pump, Denzel Curry, and singer Erykah Badu were among the attendees.[90] He was laid to rest in a gray mausoleum at the Gardens of Boca Raton Memorial Park, in Boca Raton, Florida.[91][92]

In July 2023, Boatwright's criminal interrogation was made available to the public.[93]

On June 19, the day after Onfroy's death, Billboard reported that Taylor Swift's Spotify single-day streaming record for "Look What You Made Me Do" was broken by Onfroy's track "Sad!", with over 10.4 million streams compared to Swift's 10.1 million streams.[94][95] This was followed by a 17-fold sales increase across all streaming and download platforms, including a 7000-fold sales increase in CDs on Amazon.com.[96][97] Onfroy's album ? was expected to return to the top five the week of his death following his murder, ultimately reaching number three with 90,000 album-equivalent units sold, up from 19,000 the last week.[98] In the week following his murder, Onfroy's highest-charting single, "Sad!", went from 52nd to 1st on the Billboard Hot 100, making him the first artist to top the Hot 100 posthumously in a lead role since The Notorious B.I.G., with "Mo Money Mo Problems", in 1997.[99] On June 28, his management team posthumously released the music video for "Sad!", which has received over 155 million views whilst the audio has over 1.9 billion listens on Spotify.[100][101]

Between June 18 and October 21, singer Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas wrote a song dedicated to XXXTentacion titled "6.18.18", which was performed by Billie Eilish during their "1-by-1" tour.[102]

John’s Bike: 2015 Zero SR

On Monday April 4, Gopher the Smart Car was delivered to me. On Wednesday April 6, I’d drive my husband in our electric car to buy his first electric vehicle: a 2015 Zero SR. I had no idea this bike would put me back in the seat after a crash I’d had 20 years previous.

The History & Story

I was not always a motorcyclist. In fact when I met my husband I was very much against them, because I’d already flipped one and felt they were too dangerous. I had no idea that cleaning up the garage one day would change my opinion on motorcycles. While cleaning out the garage at his old townhouse, I came across a sealed turn signal lens cover that was too small for a car. I asked what this went to, and my husband stopped and dropped the box he was holding. He stared at the package I was holding between my fingers and took it from me never breaking eye contact with it. He then tells me this was the turn signal lens for Craig’s motorcycle. Ok, so, who is Craig?

Turns out Craig was one of his best friends in college. Craig died in a motorcycle accident. The day before Craig died, he and my husband skipped classes and hung out all day. The next day he was in the hospital after being struck by a vehicle. I’ll be honest I don’t know all the details, I do know that Craig was buried in Austin, TX and that my husband has a story about his funeral and the rental Mazda Miata he got from Enterprise to attend it.

So, great, I unearthed this rather sad memory. After I’m told this story my husband says that Craig had always said he’d teach him how to ride a motorcycle. I told him how I felt about that, but I could tell this wasn’t the last I’d hear about Craig and motorcycles. Not quite a year later, John shows me the website for Zero motorcycles and says he wants one of them to commute with. I was very, very much against it. However, over time, I caved in... happy spouse, happy life or some such saying. But we didn’t go straight for the Zero...

My husband started with a Sachs MadASS - think if Vespa and Ducati had a lovechild. It was a moped, but it looked like a motorcycle. I picked it up in Nashville, TN bringing back my dad’s old F150 and his 1986 VW Golf diesel to sell off for him. I forgot how long he rode that thing, but the next bike was a BMW 650CS, the short-lived City Sport commuter bike. I know he had this bike for a couple of years, and he was annoyed with it because he never took it on the highway (he had no reason to) and it didn’t like being used as a slow speed commuter. Often it would stall out going through intersections unless a friend of ours ran it on the highway once a month for us.

Fast forward to acquiring Gopher and saying goodbye to VW diesels. John had made friends with the sales guy at the local powersports dealer that sells Zeros, and that guy let him know they had a demo unit coming up for sale at a discount. Since I’d gone electric, it was only fitting that he did too. So we sold the BMW to someone from Maine who flew down and rode it back home and we hopped in the electric car to go buy an electric motorcycle.

I wish I could say that this bike was the end all be all, but it was really a headache from the start. We had numerous issues with the on board charger, the DC-DC converter, and I believe the main bike board failed on it at one point in time. There was a solid 4 months where we were riding the demo DSR instead of our SR because it was waiting on Zero to fix it. But more on that later.

During our time with it, both the powersports sales manager and my husband egged me on to ride it. I finally caved in because I felt it was like having a manual: you should be able to at least move it around your property. So I slowly started to learn to ride a two wheel vehicle again.

Fast forward to the EV Challenge the following year (2017). This event happened on the same day as “Tour de Brew,” a bicycle-based brewery tour that my husband was dying to attend. Because we had three vehicles to show (the BMW, the Smart, and the Zero motorcycle), we dropped the BMW off the night before with my husband’s bicycle stored in the back of it. The next morning I drove the Smart and he rode the Zero to the show grounds. In his haste to get to the starting line of the tour, he picked up the wrong Plug-in NC tote bag that had all the car keys in it instead of his bag with his wallet and gloves. I didn’t realize this until the end of the day, when it was time to pack up and leave.

I called him and he says he’s not far from campus -- over at a place off Lake Wheeler Rd, and that he thinks he left the key to the bike in its ignition. Sure enough, it was there. He said to just hop on it and ride over to pick up the car keys. I said no, I’m in toe shoes and shorts and I don’t know that your helmet will fit. He said well you can ride over here or you can wait two more hours for this to be over. I decided to see if his helmet would fit.

I hopped on the bike and said a small prayer, turned the key and twisted the throttle. Away I went -- I only needed to go 2 miles to get the keys. No big deal. I got there, got the keys, and then took a 10-mile detour to get back to the cars. Turns out, I really liked how the Zero rode. 

I loved it so much, I rode it home and promptly laid it down in my driveway, gently. There wasn’t much damage...

After this we started trading off on Tuesdays. I’d take the bike to work, he’d take my car to work and then his run club event afterwards. We did this for a short time before he decided that commuting with a motorcycle was stupid, and he wanted a convertible smart car instead. I started riding the bike on Tuesdays, and Sundays, and before long I was ready to try and do a long ride with it.

In 2017, Lidl opened their first store in Sanford, North Caroilina. I decided that I wanted to ride the Zero there -- it was 40 miles -- then ride it to my friend’s house in Durham. I remember I used my Pebble smart watch to assist with the turn by turn directions, and I was terrified on the few stretches of 55mph roads I had to be on. However I managed to make it to the Lidl, pick up some mixers, and head to my friend’s home in Durham unscathed. 

But sadly, the battery management on these early units was really problematic. A few weeks after this successful long ride, I had attended a meeting in Burlington with the Triad Auto Association on the Zero. On my way back home I was going to again stop at my friend’s home in Durham (this was my weekend thing for many years), and as I was 2 miles from his house the battery went from 7% to 0% and stranded me in Durham.

I managed to push the bike up into someone’s yard as the road I died on had no shoulder or sidewalk. The owner was super nice and he ran an extension cord out for me to let the bike charge -- thankfully it did. I called my husband who had went to get a small trailer so we could tow the bike, but by the time he got the rig there it was charged up enough to make it to our friend’s house. I rode it over there and plugged it in, and we left it overnight and picked it back up on Sunday. It was around this time that we began to really engage Zero with all the problems on the bike, and ultimate they ended up taking this bike back. That’s when I bought my 2017, which thankfully, was a problem-free machine...except for the overheating due to its non-cooled battery design.
