When I was younger my older brother and father used to poke fun with me about tornados, then somehow became irritated when I'd get worked up and spooked during the powerful weather conditions.

I've always had a serious bend, a solemn tendency for internalizing that I'm trying to be more mindful of in adulthood.  Little six-year-old Scout would be the first one in the house to collect safety and entertainment rations to stow at the doorway for my family and me when we'd have to make a dash in the hail to our neighbor's basement.  There are some ‘prepper’ instincts, a little bit of daddy-drive, I believe I was just born with.

Edith and I were intertwined on my bed, and though my phone was silent there has been wild flash-flooding in the area and occasionally my weather alarm was sounding.  We ignored it.  

Then sirens.  You know, like, municipal. City sirens.

I'd invited her to stay the night and wasn't sure she was going to because of what a hectic day she had from the morning onward.  Here it was, 11 pm and pissing rain at my new house, just her second time over.  I recounted that Thom's folks have a basement around the corner and she offers to drive as she's parked behind me.  I give him a call to see if he's left his place yet.

It was polarizing going from girlie kisses to not even having time to lock the front door as we jockeyed our way over to join Thom.

His parents were out of town this weekend, he welcomed us right in and got the news going on their large tv.  El Reno was copping it.  I thanked him again and again for letting us drop in, we continued to watch the coverage for the next half hour or so, not hearing any more sirens.  It seemed as though it was dying down and Thom asked if we'd like to go sit in the massage chair.  Edith and I look at each other and shrug in agreement that it is probably something we ought to do.  We head upstairs, peeping at portraits of Thom along the way, and he gets Edith fixed up with the "restore" program.

She's loving it, and we joke about getting her one she can work out of.  Thom shows me an insanely lavish headboard his folks have in one of the guest rooms.  We return and she and I trade places, I opt for the same sequence and feel myself instantly relaxing.  I ask what move Edith enjoyed the best and she assertively responds that the ankle pressure and foot massaging was her favorite, somewhere she doesn't give enough attention.  She asks for my take "I'm into that hip squeeze!" and I may have possibly gone into a recitation of my infatuation of the pelvic bowl in general and what wonders of relief the double hip squeeze has appeared to provide women I've witnessed in labor.  I remark about how female-bodied people tend to carry the load as they move through space and how even if you aren't mid-labor it can be so reliving having pressure applied on our lower backs and yadda, yadda, yadda.

All told, Edith and I probably spent about two hours over there and left with much gratitude for Thom's generosity.  He asked if she was staying the night and when she said "oh yeah" he smiled and said he thought that was a good call.

We got back to my house and I grabbed my towel from the bathroom door, her bronze shoulders now covered in large droplets.  I see her shiver and cinch the towel around her with an embrace.  We climbed into bed and I told her how this whole evening might have been the ideal exposure therapy for me to cool my jets at the signs of funnel clouds, as we'd had a laugh earlier about our mutual childhood funnel fright. "It's kindof romantic..." she trails off,  " you kept it really cool, and I appreciate that you had a safe place for us to go."  We resume our interconnected placement from earlier and I whisper that when we realize the dream on our land we can build ourselves a combination root/twister cellar.
