Janis Joplin remains one of the most unique voices in rock history. Her raw groans combined with her raspy wails dance across all of her songs, and she was one of the most electric performers of her day. She originally performed with Big Brother & The Holding Company but eventually performed solo with her own backing bands. She played at both the Monterey Pop and Woodstock festivals. Her emotional vocals made tracks like “Summertime”, “Ball & Chain”, and “Piece of my Heart” major hits for her.

1969 saw the release of Joplin’s debut solo album, I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues Again Mama! Her next effort, Pearl, would be released posthumously. Joplin returned to her own personal roots on the album, switching out her old hard psychedelia for soul and blues. She also featured brass and horns on the record which was never done with The Holding Company. Joplin wrote but two of the tracks: “One Good Man” and “Kozmic Blues”. 

Nonetheless, the album was full of hits. One of these was the grooving “Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)”. Joplin sings about working to keep her love around over a bassline that’s more funk than psychedelic rock. As usual, Joplin lets loose a string of adlibs, shouts, and howls that elevate the track from a blues cover to a classic. Her new horns arrangement allows her to inject a deep South, New Orleans flavor into the track. The percussion is tight and driving, and while the song is definitely in a style fans had not come to expect Joplin, it is entirely her own and she executes it flawlessly.

“Try” starts as a classic swinging bluesly Joplin song, but the second half is what distinguishes it. The music slows and falls quieter. Joplin all but whispers. Suddenly, she screams and the winds of the world are released as the tempo reaches its peak and all the energy of the song is released in a supernatural explosion. It’s what made Joplin such an incredible and inimitable performer: her ability to skyrocket a song at any moment and hold the listener captive.
