I've started playing final fantasy 11 in anticipation of the new raid in Dawntrail and honestly I fucking love this game.

It feels so much more like an actual final fantasy game in the best ways. Red mage uses the same spells as white and black mages but gets them at higher levels, mob grinding is a viable and encouraged levelling tactic, shit like the summoner job being unlocked by getting a rare drop and then standing in several weather effects that occur in the world at random times, affected by the actual real life seasons, BLU is an actual full job that's fully viable but still involves collecting spells and using them in sets. It's just got so much texture to it. Those 20 years mean there's a lot of random bullshit to figure out and the game is unplayable without wikidiving. But it also means that they've stuck to what works for them and the game honestly feels very unique for an MMO.

What is your opinion on the sexual cutscenes of FF16? I think a similar question was previously asked about Triangle Strategy and it seemed rather forced for the sake of pretending to be a more mature story, when FFT didn't rely on the explicitly sexual content to tell a mature story.

(This ask and the response are based on information that has been available as early as the demo and shouldn't contain any spoilers for the full game).

I don't mind a good sex scene and find the strangely puritanical reaction against sex depicted in film and television to be one of the most alien and frustrating discourses in recent years, but in this case it just seems to be the natural consequence of Yoshi P. demanding that his team watch the fucking GoT box-set:

...We wanted to create something that really resonated with a lot of people. And when we saw how Game of Thrones, and before that the Song of Ice and Fire series, has really resonated with players, we knew that this was something that we wanted to do as well. When we first started creating the game, we had our core team of about 30 members very early on buy the blu-ray boxset of Game of Thrones and required everyone to watch it, because we wanted this type of feel.

Game of Thrones made a lot of people a lot of money, and we thought to ourselves, boy, we would also like some of that money.

A larger distinction is that GoT features real actors who are, you know, people, and so it's not terribly embarrassing to see them stripped and smashing their shit together or jacking off or whatever. FFXVI, according to the aesthetic preference of an entire industry, is populated by uncanny digital homunculi only crudely approximating the appearance of real people with the animating force of God's breath filling their lungs. I don't anticipate that FFXVI will have full-bore, hog-out ramming or anything- I assume it's just a lot of post-coital sideboob, maybe a glimpse of Clive's weird little ass here and there- but in this presentational mode it would play closer to comedy if you're not catastrophically addicted to Overwatch porn.

There is a reason the camera would always cut away before Kratos starts fucking. You don't want to see that shit. You think you want to see it, but you don't want to see it. Do you expect to profit by seeing what David Jaffe in his wisdom has obscured from our eyes? This isn't In the Mood for Love. A color pencil rendering by some chronically masturbating teenage fan submitted to EGM in 2006 would be more stimulating than whatever these games are capable of showing you. You don't need to see Kratos' stroke game. You haven't even earned the right.

Beyond the unintended aesthetic effect of these things, I don't really trust this team to incorporate that influence in a meaningful or considered way, based on what I've seen of the game thus far. It extends to the 'epic medieval violence' and the prolific use of 'fuck'. I love fuck like a brother so please understand when I say that this is an incredibly remedial deployment of the term. The fuck sauce is not imitable. You simply have it or else it'll never be yours. A decade of stewarding radically PG-13 MMO quest dialogue has closed off the way to that place for Michael-Christopher Koji Fox.

And the insistent comparisons to Matsuno's oeuvre from the fanbase, often as a defensive appeal to legitimacy wherever the GoT influence is noted, are bordering on the absurd. Vaguely medieval politicking was apparently the only mark of his work that ever found purchase in people's minds, and none of the particular aesthetic, aural, or tonal distinctions that made those games living and vital. I don't expect that this game will have a meaningful resonance with those works except that people will be furious when the narrative inevitably ends with Clive facing off against some sort of ogre or deity instead of late medieval Karl Rove. But I also don't expect I'll have anything meaningful to share on the matter until I've seen for myself if it's as blandly imitative as it all seems. I mean, it's at least coming from an incredibly cynical place, as evinced in the quote above.

I don't have $650 USD burning a hole in my pocket at the moment, but I would love to be proven wrong whenever I have the chance to play it in like, late 2024. I similarly thought that FFXV looked totally insipid but then found it very affecting. Combat is an easy sell as one of the last living "character-action guys". You can use 'Stinger', that's good. There's a cooldown on the launcher? What the fuck is wrong with these people? It's probably still pretty good.

Thanks for the ask! Here's what comes to mind:

1. FF14 -- Probably an answer that can be broken up into multiple parts, but this has been my favorite MMO and I can see myself continuing to play it for years, and have already been playing for 3 and a half. My favorite things to do are leveling, Savage raiding, and relic farming, though I enjoy tons of other content like variant dungeons, roulettes, deep dungeons, BLU, etc! It's been a while, but I like socializing with other folks in game too. Been thinking of leaning back into that a bit.

2. My Partner -- He plays FF14 as well (which is where we met), and has been a source of a lot of enjoyment in my life for the past year. I'll spare you all the gushing but he challenges me to be a better version of myself and continues to be a comfort of mine.

3. Sweet Treats -- I have a mega sweet tooth and that puts me in a better mood when I have treats! I'm partial to sweets with flavor combos (like sweet/savory or sweet/tart), and some of my favorite dishes would be ice cream, cookies, and pie!

4. Gaming -- Deserves its own separate category from FF14, I've been a gamer since I was 6 (first game I owned was Crash 3: Warped; First I played was OG Sonic on Sega) and it has helped develop me as a person for the better over time. I tend to like RPGs in all their forms, puzzle games, indie games, platformers, and I dabble a bit in card battlers and roguelikes!

5. Comfy Clothes -- I'm quite the tall individual, so finding clothes that fit well and look good can be a struggle without breaking the bank. However, finding clothes that have me feel exceedingly comfy is such a nice thing when I find them. I managed to get, for example, an oversized hoodie that I can feel small in (which would dwarf the average person) and it's something I wear super often because of how comfy it is.

Getting a lot of fun out of blue mage. From what I can tell it's a well constructed piece of solo content, and I'm finding myself rewarded by pulling knowledge from my experience in all 3 major roles, which is... good. Hopefully the Masked Carnivale brings with it some intense challenges that push it to its limit.

Also, though people have been griping about a solo job in an mmo, I think this is the first time in ages I've seen people out in the overworld world and having to cooperate. Idek why people hate the idea of solo content so much; it fills a niche in the content that in ffxiv is honestly poorly served for the most part, and this is an interesting way to execute it while implementing blu in a way that maintains its identity.

OPEN TO DISCUSSION: What do you guys REALLY think of BLU as it is?

As someone who personally doesn't like the specialized BLU class that was added simply for HOW it works, and not the class in of itself... I'm curious to open discussion for what you all think of it.

PERSONALLY: I don't think "single-player" content should be added in MMOs like this. THis feels more like a glorified hunting log instead. It feels rushed considering there's a 50 cap, meaning they haven't adjusted the expansions zones to accommodate BLU--

AND if this had just been a normal working class that came out in Shadowbringers instead of late Stormblood all specialized like this, I would've been perfectly fine with it. I don't think I'm gonna be stressing myself to get this to 50 even...

Stormblood Achievements

As Stormblood ends, and the hype train for Shadowbringers now acelerating to light speed, it's time to reflect on the expansion that was, and list all the stuff I achieved!

Leveled every job from 60 to 70 (1-50 for BLU), except PLD which I took from 50-70

Completed every HW & SB sidequest in the game

Completed every Crafting and Gathering Levequest.

Obtained all the “I Made That” achievements for all crafting classes

Crafted over 3,730 individual items!

Obtained all the “I Found That” achievements for Miner and Botanist

Found over 460 individual items!

Cleared all 100 floors of Heaven on High (Twice!)

Cleared Eureka

Cleared the Baldesion Arsenal

Got a full set of +2 Elemental Armor

Completed my PLD Eureka Relic

Completed 2 additional Anima relics (WHM & PLD)

Got all the materials for every other Anima relic, so I’ll have them all by the end of ShB.

Cleared A4 Savage 20 times.

Farmed all the Garo achievements and mounts

Left my old FC and started a new one.

Cleared Housing (Savage) a record three times!

Got married! (/dote @madbearz)

Defeated every NPC at triple triad!

Obtained 165 triple triad cards.

I think the above is proof that I am absolutely insane and will inflict a lot of punishment on myself in an effort to keep myself occupied while being lonely in a MMO.

Anyway, looking forward to Shadowbringers and what self-inflicted insanity I get up to on the first shard.
