Long ago @shervinator asked me to cover this one, and though I see this beautiful car around quite a bit, but I never did get a good shot of it until now. It’s a #Dastun810 - a name phased out in favor of #Maxima in 1982. Although more elaborate and larger cars were available from #Datsun elsewhere (Cedric, Laurel, Skyline) - the Bluebird-based 810 became the biggest and fanciest car Datsun had yet offered Americans in 1977, and would remain so until the debut of Infiniti in 1989. At that time Datsun was growing fast, and dealers wanted a broader range - one way to do that was to move into mid-size territory. The #810 fit the bill easily with a little tweaking - producing a car that was essentially unique to North America, and offered qualities usually only found in much more expensive cars at the time. Clothed in the somewhat plain-jane Bluebird styling, the original 810 combined the long-wheelbase (stretched in front, ahead of the A-pillar) six-cylinder JDM #BluebirdG6 body with the injected 125hp L24E #straightsix, a motor previously used in the 240Z in carb’d form. #Japanese Bluebirds made due with the L20 2-liter. The six-cyl wagon was a North America-only item, and for a short time in 1979-80 there was also an 810 Hardtop Coupe derived from the #BluebirdSSS. Indeed, the kinship owed to the L-series six and the rear-drive layout meant that the 810 was often described as a “four door 280Z” - indeed the 1977-78 810 sedans were actually about 100 lbs. lighter than the 280Z but were also slightly less powerful. But it was also very refined - appreciably higher quality materials were used inside than on the lesser #Datsuns and a fine handling, smooth, injected, rear-drive Six was ordinarily the province of BMW and Mercedes in those days. The 810 was pitched at Chevy Malibus and VW Dashers. It was a bit more expensive than those cars, but half the price of a BMW 530i. In the 70s Americans thought of Japanese cars as cheap and cheerful - the 810 wasn’t a big seller but anybody who tried one had that image permanently dispelled.
