Re: preheating. Depends on what you're cooking. For roasting meat, I wouldn't worry as much, just cook it to temperature and check with a meat thermometer. For baking, like cakes, bread, cookies, PREHEAT. You need the oven spring for breads, and for chemically leavened items, the heat triggers the baking powder's second action. Even for baking soda biscuits or cookies, where the rise is limited or is just from the interaction of the baking soda with a liquid, not having the oven to temperature means your items are sitting around drying out, and the butter might melt and run out before the structure can bake, ruining your baked good.

Chapters should have as many words as they need, no more, no less.

My chapters can be around 8-10k words. However, some of my recent chapters have been around 3k words, and that's okay, I think.

What would you say is a good word count for a chapter? Of course, this is flexible and depends on what's necessary in a given chapter. But I think there is a general guideline because a chapter needs to be long enough to be satisfying, but not so long that it feels too much. Thoughts?

I personally write 1-3K per chapter (and 3K is rare for me). Other people average 5K or 10K or more. I find it hard to read more than 3K at a sitting, so that’s about my max as a reader but I’ve had comments on my chapters saying that they’re too short. 

All that is to say that it’s very subjective. Still, how about we get people to respond to this with their favourite chapter length? That should give you an idea. 

Readers and writers alike: how long do you prefer your chapters. K=1000, so in my example 3K is 3000 words.

But I felt like that one deserved a response because I have therapy tomorrow and I keep wondering if there’s some strategy to help me build better self-esteem, because no matter how many times I ask my therapist, it seems to come down to “just have it.”

Also, got my pants done! (Or ran out of studs, shhhh) I've just got to touch up my wig, and I might put some fusible interfacing behind the studs, since the fabric is a tiny bit flimsy and I'm concerned the studs might come loose and the interfacing might help. (Maybe. I hope.)
