Nova’s spaces within Carreau’s mansion are as tech filled and sleek as every other room, but during her residence there she had taken steps to add more of an elegant and chic touch to her rooms, with lighter colours and more whimsical elements.

The Bedroom: an overview

Her bedroom separates into four main sections. When you walk in you’re greeting by the tall windows covering the expanse of one wall, and in front of them Nova’s vanity. To the right a door to her walk-in closet and the lounging area, and to the left her bed. The whole room smells of lavender, orange, and chamomile- a sweet and relaxing scent- thanks to essential oil diffusers and her fabric conditioner. It’s a bright and open plan space, with off white natura oak hardwood floors, wallpapered in a soft purple grey with silver floral patterning. There are of course blackout blinds, but Nova only brings those down when she is going to bed, otherwise there are sheer purple curtains framing the windows on either side of the wall. She has a collection of artworks arranged in a cluster on one wall, ranging from minimalist modern work to older styles- all original works carefully curated by herself.

Vanity-

The placement of her vanity was paramount in the arrangement of her room, as of course setting it in-front of the windows provides excellent natural lighting by which she can do her hair and makeup. The unit is a delicate jade colour with large, fold out mirrors, and three draws going down either side to house her makeup and brushes. The companion chair matches the jade colour for the most part with a pink cushion on the seat, a high back, and ornate legs. Her prettiest and most used makeup items make their way onto the desk; a Natasha Denona sunset eyeshadow palette, some Pat Mcgrath and Tom Ford lipsticks, an Anastasia Beverly Hills highlighter kit, and a Kat Von D contour kit to name a few. Lining the edges of the mirror- which are never folded in- are her favourite photographs from the last few years, including a few with her father, old friends, and stunning views she captured. On the left of the desk is her most worn jewelry arranged on a stand in the shape of a hand.

Bed-

Nova’s bed is an ornately carved Bonaparte French Bed in an azure blue with silver detailing. Her sheets are silk and a deep, smoky grey in colour. She has a blanket layer underneath the duvet for extra warmth and comfort. The bedside table matches the bedframe in colour and detailing. Resting on it Is a black eye mask with white eyelashes embroidered onto it, a spray bottle of lavender water which she spritzes onto her pillow before sleep, and an old fashioned corded phone designed to look like a set of pouty red lips. (This phone isn’t in use anymore but is her homage to the excitable and overt trends of the nineties.) Nova has an eclectic set of throw cushions, but she of course has her favourites- one baby pink and fluffy, one covered in teal sequins, and one with dainty floral embroidery and a rude message sewed in a delicate script.

Walk-in Wardrobe-

Her pride and joy, of course. On the back of one of the doors is a tall mirror- so she can evaluate her outfit- and on the back of the other hangs a black silk robe. In the middle of the room is a chaise lounge upholstered in red, in case she becomes overwhelmed by her own wonderful fashion sense. Lining the left of the room are drawers containing lesser worn jewellery items, underwear (organized first by colour and then by how sexy it is), scarves, hats, bags, and a shoe rack that rotates at the push of a button. The right is for all her clothes, closest to the door is shelving for t-shirts and shorts, underneath that is a small space for hanging shirts and blouses, so they won’t crinkle. Beyond that everything else is hung up, and this section of the wardrobe also rotates allowing Nova to go between her dresses, trousers, skirts, and jeans.

Lounging Area-

What room is complete without a specified area in which to lounge, after all? Lounging on the bed is for barbarians. In this part of the room there is a rug, olive in colour and shaped like a circle to encompass the whole lounge zone. There’s a tall backed armchair covered in luxe purple velvet, two scratch free brown leather sofas, and a glass coffee table decorated with Nova’s trinkets- woodwick candles, discarded earrings, pretty crystals, and a stack of magazines. If you are lucky enough to be her guest in the mansion this is most likely where you would find yourself socializing, as she feels the lightness of her room in comparison with the rest of the place can put people at ease. By the coffee table there is also a minifridge kept stocked with wine, bottled water, and snacks.

The Library/Office: an overview

Since this space is used by both Carreau and Nova it’s more minimalist than her own room, with a sleek and modern design. Frankly, if Nova had her way she’d add a big bay window and a colour or two that wasn’t black.

Desk-

This desk gets used more than you might think for a woman whose main involvement in her fathers’ business was face to face dealings with clients and overview of the night to night goings on at the club. No, this is a desk with rather more sinister intent. See if you’re not careful lies and plans can get away from you. For every character Nova comes across is West Hollow there is a folder in this desk, and after every interaction she notes down anything of importance that happened, and her future plans for this person. Since in Nova’s opinion malicious and evil acts aught to be well organized this is the place dedicated to that organization and it is treated as such, all stationary and equipment neatly lined up, incriminating documents safely locked away in drawers. There’s very little of her personality showing on the surface of this corner, it is tidy and without extravagant decoration.

Reading Nook-

In compassion to her work area Nova’s reading nook is a warm and cosy space. It’s set in a corner of the library where some of her favourite literature resides so as to be able to access them with ease. The centrepiece is a plush leather armchair, worn and scratched up from the years she has curled up in it, with a tartan blanket draped over the back. Besides the chair is a small end table, stacked high with her in progress reads alongside a small notepad and pen so she can jot down any books that she absolutely Should Not read again, due to how terrible they were. It’s also not rare to see an empty mug left somewhere in the area too, as she likes to drink hot chocolate while reading and doesn’t always remember to take it through to the kitchen when she leaves.

Normally at Freshome, we spend a lot of time talking about how to design around small spaces. However, the reality is that those with the opposite problem also deserve our time and attention. Today, we’re revealing our best tricks for how to design a large room. Read on to learn how to put together an expansive space without it feeling too stark.

Visually divide the space

Here’s one of the biggest secrets in dealing with expansive spaces: You can break the space up however you choose. In this case, each large room in your home doesn’t have to have one, singular purpose. Instead, you can divide the space up into distinctly different areas in order to increase functionality while using up square footage at the same time.

Take the photo above as an example. Yes, the main purpose of the room is to serve as a bedroom. However, if the room was just a bed and some dresser drawers, it would be swimming in empty space. That’s why the owner included two additional seating areas. The room still offers plenty of room to sleep, yet you now also have a place to curl up with a good book or your morning coffee.

If you decide to go this route, you’ll design the room the same way that you would an open concept space. Go in with a plan of attack for what purpose you want each of the distinct areas to serve. Then, include visual clues like area rugs, lighting fixtures and designated pathways to help signify to the viewer that each section of the room has its own unique purpose.

Anchor the room with a rug

If you’re looking to visually tie a large room together, there’s no better way to do so than with a great area rug. An area rug will help ground a seating area, dining table or bedframe. It helps by making the placement of the furniture look purposeful rather than like all of your pieces are just floating out in space.

When buying an area rug, the correct sizing is key. In general, you can follow these guidelines:

If you’re choosing a full room rug, remember to leave room for a border of flooring around all sides. 18 inches is considered the standard border measurement.

If your rug will be grounding a seating area, measure the length and width of the seating area in its current layout and buy the next size up.

If the rug is meant to highlight a piece of furniture like a dining table, make sure it’s big enough to extend beyond the piece with room on all sides. For a dining table, 24 inches is standard. However, it should be less if you’re working with a smaller piece like a coffee table.

That said, the placement of your furniture is also important. When designing a large space, it can be tempting to place all of your furniture along the walls. However, doing so can leave an uncomfortable amount of dead space in the middle of the room. Instead, think about keeping your furniture – and by extension, area rug – centralized. At that point, any extra square footage will become a useful walkway.

Another thing to think about is the scale of the items, and especially the furniture, that you put in the room. In interior design parlance, scale and proportion refer to how well an item’s size corresponds to the room itself. Here, it stands to reason that if you have to fill a larger room, you’d want to also have larger furniture to go with it.

You’ll want to focus on finding furniture that has a heavier visual weight. In general, upholstered items often look heavier than those without cushions. Furniture that sits low to the ground appears heavier than items on tapered legs. Keep in mind, this principle extends beyond furniture, too. You’ll also want to find lighting fixtures and wall art, for example, that are large enough to work within the space.

The last tip we have to offer for larger rooms is to not be afraid to double up on furniture and accessories in order to take up more space. It may seem strange at first to try and wrap your head around the idea of having two couches and two ottomans, but as you can see from the picture above, you can use multiples to create a chic look.

If you decide to go this route, it’s important to give the large room a sense of balance. Not only has balance been shown to be psychologically pleasing, but it will also help your design to feel more cohesive. Focus on using your doubled design elements to create near mirror images.

Overcoming A Dark Apartment With Ingenious Lighting Schemes

An ingenious interior design was required to please the bright outlook of a young couple located in the city of Dnipro, Ukraine. Their 115 square metre apartment was lacking in natural light due to its long layout, plunging the back of the home into shade. Designers at Dezest met the challenge with a range of lighting solutions, including a kitchen backsplash of LED lit panels, recessed perimeter lighting that throws a bright glow down each wall, and a borrowed light arrangement via french doors to a guest room. Despite the dark disposition of the home, the team hasn’t shied away from deliciously deep blue colour inserts or the utility of living greens.

In rebellion of the lack of light, the design team implemented a royal blue living room scheme. Upholstered blue panels make up the tv wall decor, opposite a wall of blue geometric pattern. A feeling of cleanliness comes from smooth white walls around the cosy colour inserts. Blue scatter cushions bridge the gap in the middle, dressing a light grey L-shaped sofa and a matching footstool. The lounge furniture arrangement is pulled together by a plush grey area rug. Modern ceiling lights are poised for switch-on in a square track above.

A hanging bubble chair is suspended by the sofa, its acrylic case allows daylight from the windows to pass through via sheer white drapes. It’s blue seat cushions complement the colour theme in the rest of the room.

The open plan living room runs straight into a U-shaped kitchen diner, which is predominantly pure white with just a few base notes of rich stained wood. In the early stages of the interior design process, the design team faced the problem of a long wall without any window openings. As the rear of the room presented itself as the best option for situating the kitchen, a set of French doors were installed to the adjacent guest room to facilitate an exchange of borrowed light.

An Eames style lounge chair is nestled by the edge of the kitchen installation, beneath a black swing arm wall lamp. If you’d like to create your own little reading corner like this, take a look at these comfortable reading chairs for inspiration.

The kitchen peninsula stops short of the width of the room to allow space for a full sized dining table. The wood table seats six diners between the kitchen layout and the lounge area. A row of five dining room pendant lights dangle from a wood clad soffit overhead. The soffit design descends as an open shelving unit at the end of the room, to display a small selection of glasses and items of crockery.

A decorative vase is set on a table runner as a simple yet elegant table centrepiece. The mid century modern style chairs are replicas of the Eames Eiffel chair.

Black tiles form a border around the edge of the kitchen diner space. The rest of the floor is a grey micro cement.

A run of LED lit panels make up the backsplash to dispel all shadows in the white kitchen. A set of open kitchen shelves have been given a blue finish to tie in with the colour story in the rest of the open plan room.

The French doors to the guest room can be left open to extend the area of open plan living space.

The guest room also contains the home office, which is equipped with a built-in desk and attached shelving unit. Two beautiful geometric pendant lights dangle over the worktop.

Bespoke white storage cabinets line one side of the entry hallway, with a comfortable seat recessed in the middle. The hall seat is upholstered in plush blue fabric, and lit by spotlights in its upper frame.

An illuminated mirror covers an angled wall in the hallway, mounted flush from edge to edge, making the narrow space feel larger.

The bedroom is a super cosy scheme of dynamic lighting solutions. Strip lights run around the edge of the bedframe to cast a glow over the entire base and attached bedside units. The dreamy golden light shines through a knitted throw draped across the end of the bed. Bespoke window seats follow the same illuminated edge design. More LEDs have been installed inside the border of a recessed wooden headboard feature, which reaches all the way up to and over the ceiling.

The neat black bedroom pendant light that is suspended over each bedside storage unit is the Panton VP6.

A second study desk resides in the corner of the bedroom, backed in wood to match the towering headboard.

The desk design is part of the all encompassing bedroom furniture installation that runs as one continuous piece around the entire room.

The cushioned window seats serve as a perfect reading nook.

Diamond pattern tiles lead into a luxurious bathroom scheme of gloss white and wood furniture and living greens.

A living wall ascends behind the double sink bathroom vanity, illuminated from either side by white LEDs. Two bathroom pendant lights hang in front.

A separate WC has a floor of plain white tiles at the foot of powder blue-grey walls. A bespoke corner cut vanity unit is wedged into the small space, topped with a vessel sink. A lighting strip slices up the wall and across the ceiling space, where a hanging terrarium drops into view.

4 Ways to Ensure a Large Room Doesn’t End up Feeling Too Stark

Normally at Freshome, we spend a lot of time talking about how to design around small spaces. However, the reality is that those with the opposite problem also deserve our time and attention. Today, we’re revealing our best tricks for how to design a large room. Read on to learn how to put together an expansive space without it feeling too stark.

Visually divide the space

Here’s one of the biggest secrets in dealing with expansive spaces: You can break the space up however you choose. In this case, each large room in your home doesn’t have to have one, singular purpose. Instead, you can divide the space up into distinctly different areas in order to increase functionality while using up square footage at the same time.

Take the photo above as an example. Yes, the main purpose of the room is to serve as a bedroom. However, if the room was just a bed and some dresser drawers, it would be swimming in empty space. That’s why the owner included two additional seating areas. The room still offers plenty of room to sleep, yet you now also have a place to curl up with a good book or your morning coffee.

If you decide to go this route, you’ll design the room the same way that you would an open concept space. Go in with a plan of attack for what purpose you want each of the distinct areas to serve. Then, include visual clues like area rugs, lighting fixtures and designated pathways to help signify to the viewer that each section of the room has its own unique purpose.

Anchor the room with a rug

If you’re looking to visually tie a large room together, there’s no better way to do so than with a great area rug. An area rug will help ground a seating area, dining table or bedframe. It helps by making the placement of the furniture look purposeful rather than like all of your pieces are just floating out in space.

When buying an area rug, the correct sizing is key. In general, you can follow these guidelines:

If you’re choosing a full room rug, remember to leave room for a border of flooring around all sides. 18 inches is considered the standard border measurement.

If your rug will be grounding a seating area, measure the length and width of the seating area in its current layout and buy the next size up.

If the rug is meant to highlight a piece of furniture like a dining table, make sure it’s big enough to extend beyond the piece with room on all sides. For a dining table, 24 inches is standard. However, it should be less if you’re working with a smaller piece like a coffee table.

That said, the placement of your furniture is also important. When designing a large space, it can be tempting to place all of your furniture along the walls. However, doing so can leave an uncomfortable amount of dead space in the middle of the room. Instead, think about keeping your furniture – and by extension, area rug – centralized. At that point, any extra square footage will become a useful walkway.

Pay attention to scale

Another thing to think about is the scale of the items, and especially the furniture, that you put in the room. In interior design parlance, scale and proportion refer to how well an item’s size corresponds to the room itself. Here, it stands to reason that if you have to fill a larger room, you’d want to also have larger furniture to go with it.

You’ll want to focus on finding furniture that has a heavier visual weight. In general, upholstered items often look heavier than those without cushions. Furniture that sits low to the ground appears heavier than items on tapered legs. Keep in mind, this principle extends beyond furniture, too. You’ll also want to find lighting fixtures and wall art, for example, that are large enough to work within the space.

The last tip we have to offer for larger rooms is to not be afraid to double up on furniture and accessories in order to take up more space. It may seem strange at first to try and wrap your head around the idea of having two couches and two ottomans, but as you can see from the picture above, you can use multiples to create a chic look.

If you decide to go this route, it’s important to give the large room a sense of balance. Not only has balance been shown to be psychologically pleasing, but it will also help your design to feel more cohesive. Focus on using your doubled design elements to create near mirror images.
