SCOTLAND GEARS UP FOR SCORCHER OF A SUMMER AS MET OFFICE PREDICTS TEMPERATURES WILL SOAR TO 33C…. The glorious sunshine is expected to fall within the school holidays, from late June till August. Scots are gearing up for a scorcher of a summer. The country is set for its hottest summer for over a decade. The Met Office is predicting the highest temperatures for 12 years, soaring to a sizzling 33C. It's good news for families, as the glorious sunshine is expected to fall within the school holidays, from late June till August. Hotter temperatures are eight times as likely as cooler temperatures, the Met Office claims. Many parts of Scotland have been basking in glorious sunshine over the past few weeks. Scotland gears up for scorcher of a summer as Met Office predicts temperatures will soar to 33c  Looking to this coming week temperatures in Glasgow and Edinburgh will push 20C. A spokesperson from The Met Office said: "Many places will see warm spells of sunshine after any early mist has cleared this week. "Some heavy showers will develop across Scotland and northern England later where it will be fairly cloudy. "Wales and the south-west will see isolated showers too."

AXE LOOMS FOR HIGHLAND STATION WITH JUST 76 PASSENGERS YEAR…. A remote Highland railway station could be the first to be closed in Scotland for more than 30 years under plans to speed up journeys on the line. Kildonan, near Helmsdale in Sutherland, has just 76 passengers a year – around one every five days – though it is served by seven trains a day. Shutting it could save up to four minutes from trips on the Inverness to Thurso/Wick route. However, the plans come months after ministers rejected a move to close Breich station in West Lothian, which has even fewer passengers. Supporters of the Far North Line said they were likely to oppose the plan to close the 144-year-old station, which has the third lowest number of passengers in Scotland. Balloch Pier on Loch Lomond was the last to close, in 1986. The Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership co-ordinating body (Hitrans) said there would be an opportunity to close Kildonan when barriers are installed at an adjacent open level crossing, where trains currently have to stop to ensure the road is clear. The station is a “request” stop, so trains would still have to slow down in case there were passengers waiting to board. Partnership manager Frank Roach said: “Over 60,000 passengers a year use stations to the north of Kildonan, including Wick and Thurso. “Caithness residents have one of the slowest journeys by rail to their regional centre, Inverness, which is increasingly an important centre for education, training and health. “These passengers could have the journey time reduced through this measure. “It is a low-cost non-engineering solution to a long-standing problem. “Local residents within in the catchment are few, and trains will still stop at Kinbrace, eight miles away, and Helmsdale, 9.5 miles away.”

50 BANDS SET TO APPEAR AT LOCH LOMOND LIVE FESTIVAL…. AROUND 50 bands will take to the stage for Loch Lomond Live festival. The event, on September 22 and 23, will be the first major music festival on the loch in ten years. The festival will feature a mixture of traditional Scottish music and up-and-coming indie rock and alternative bands. There will also be local acts on the bill. Balloch band Have Mercy Las Vegas will appear. A spokesman for the festival said: “We’re delighted to announce that the festival will be at Luss Highland Games park. “It’s a fantastic location and we’ll also be announcing various transport options in due course. “Dubbed by radio legend Jim Gellatly as ‘an ideal festival band’, we’re delighted to announce local stars Have Mercy Las Vegas as our first act.” The event will promote local culture and feature entertainment, attractions and live music plus food and drink. The full line-up will be released on Monday, with tickets going on sale on June 15.

WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER CANNABIS RESIN SEIZED IN ABERDEEN…. Cannabis resin with an estimated street value of £100,000 has been seized from a property in Aberdeen. The seizure was made on Monday in the Rosemount area of the city, according to Police Scotland. Officers said a 57-year-old woman was arrested and charged in connection with the recovery. Alykes Beach may not be one of the best beaches in Greece, but it’s definitely one of the best beaches in Zakynthos. In fact, after travelling around the island for more than two weeks, this was our favourite stretch of sand. 

Not only is this bay filled with softer sand than most Ionian Beaches making it easier to walk around and swim without wearing footwear, but it also had one of the best restaurants in Zakynthos located right on the beach.

In this post, I’m going to break down everything you need to know about Alykes Beach in Zakynthos. Whether you want to stay near the beach, or just go there and have lunch as part of a day trip, this post will cover it all.

About Alykes Beach

Alykes Beach is a stunning stretch of granulated golden sand that has actually been awarded the blue flag for cleanliness, an honour that is not given to a lot of beaches in the world. In fact, Greece has the second most Blue Flag Awarded beaches in the world which is something that they are very proud of. 

It’s perhaps most famous for the massive Alykes Beach resort, but despite having one of the biggest beach resorts on the island, it’s still one of the most chilled out beaches in Zakynthos.

Where is Alykes Beach?

Alykes Beach is located off the east northeast point of Zakynthos Island, a small island of about 40,000 people in the Ionian Sea in western Greece. This is one of the best places to visit in Greece.

Zakynthos is about 20 kilometres west of mainland Peloponnese Greece and about 249 kilometres west of the capital of Athens City.

Alykes Beach itself is located in the town of Katastari in Zakynthos Island. The city has plenty of restaurants, bars and accommodation options and many people will end up choosing Katastari when deciding where to stay in Zakynthos.

How To Get To Alykes Beach

Alykes Beach: Katastari 290 90 – Zakynthos, Greece

Because Zakynthos is a small island and it doesn’t have the best public transport system, I recommend renting a car for the duration of your stay. We rented a car for the entire time we were there and it was the perfect way to get around and see all the things to do in Zakynthos.

A rental car will cost you around €15 – €20 per day depending on the size of the vehicle, insurance and the season in which you travel. 

There are a few public buses that go between Zante Town and Akyles Beach, but they stop running in the late afternoon. There are also quite a few tour operators on the main road in Katastari town which offer trips into Zante town and back.

There’s also a touristy road train (Trainiki) that passes by Alykes Beach and up to the nearby village of Pigadakia. You can also rent motorbikes, quads, bikes and scooters from tour operators and rental companies on the main roads in town.

Best Time To Visit Alykes Beach Zakynthos

If you’re coming to Akykes Beach Zakynthos on part of a day trip, then you’ll want to time your trip for the best time of day to visit Alykes Beach, and if you’re trying to decide the best time to visit Zakynthos, then you’ll also want to know the best time to visit Greece as a whole.

The Best Time of Day To Visit Alykes Beach

The best time of day to visit Alykes Beach is the same as any beach in Greece. You’ll likely want to arrive mid-day when the sun is directly overhead and illuminating the brilliantly blue Ionian Sea at the beach.

Sunrise is also a great time to visit Alykes Beach as you can see the sun climbing up over the Greek Mainland at certain times of the year. Sunset’s a beautiful time to visit as well, but don’t expect to see the sun hit the sea here. If you want to see that you’ll have to go to beaches on the west coast like Porto Limnionus or from the cliffs of Kampi.

The Best Time Of Year to Visit Alykes Beach

The best time to go to Zakynthos is anytime between March and November when the Sea is warm enough (it’ll be a bit chilly at either end though), the weather is warm and tourist sights, restaurants and accommodations are open.

We prefer to visit Zakynthos in the shoulder season, between March and May or September to Early November. The sea is a bit cooler at these times, but there are way fewer people on the island and the tourist sights (like Navagio Beach) are much less crowded.

The summer months (June to August) are also a great time to visit Alykes Beach Zakynthos. This is when the Ionian is at its warmest, but daytime temperatures can reach 40°C (104°F) so it’s not really comfortable to be anywhere besides the water. Also, the crowds can take away from the peaceful nature of the beach.

The Type of Sand on Alykes Beach

Alykes Beach Zakynthos is a unique beach on the island because it actually has nice, granular golden sand. So many other beaches in Zakynthos and in the rest of the Ionian and Mediterranean have pebbles, which make it very uncomfortable to walk on them.

Alykes Beach is sandy enough that you can stroll along large stretches of it in bare feet and you can also lay your towel down in the sand comfortably, without having a bunch of stones poking into your backside!

When deciding on where to stay in Zakynthos, you may find that Alykes Beach area is a great option. There are plenty of hotels and apartments available, as well as a few cool guest houses and the massive Alykes Beach Resort. Here are a few of the top-rated places to stay on Alykes Beach.

Best Restaurants Near Alykes Beach

There are so many restaurants to choose from around Alykes Beach, but our favourites are on the sand. In fact, our favourite restaurant in Zakynthos was located on the small jetty that separates Alykes Beach from Alykanas Beach next door.

Porto Paradiso

Katastari 290 90, Zakynthos, Greece

This funky little beach bar and restaurant is definitely one of the best restaurants in Zakynthos. It has tasty food, great service and if you order a drink or a meal from here, you can use the beach lounge chairs for free. We spent a couple of afternoons just chilling at this beach bar with a Mykonos beer in hand. Highly recommended.

To Koukounari Taverna

Katastari 290 90, Zakynthos, Greece

This is a really popular place with amazing reviews on Google and Trip Advisor. They have a great staff and the food here is delicious. Try the Greek dishes like the chicken souvlaki and the chocolate souffle for dessert.

Paporo Beach Restaurant

Another great beach restaurant set right on the sand, Paporo is a great option on Alykes Beach. It’s literally right next door to Porto Paradiso. The food here is a bit more expensive and a bit more fancy (with strange dangling shrimp kababs zipping out of the kitchen), but it’s clean, the service is good and you can’t beat the location.

Asteria Taverna

Katastari 290 90, Zakynthos, Greece

This is another perfectly situated taverna right on Alykes beach. They have delicious Greek food with a really friendly chef and staff. They’re open breakfast, lunch and dinner and they have some tasty dessert pancakes on the menu as well.

Pita Break Grill House

Katastari 290 90, Zakynthos, Greece

This super-local joint is set on the main road back from the beach, but it’s well worth a visit. They serve, you guessed it, delicious pitas and gyros for an affordable price (around €2.50 for a pita) and they have ice-cold beer for cheap here as well.

Should You Go?

Alykes Beach is definitely a must-visit stretch of sand on any Zakynthos itinerary. If you’re coming to the island, make sure that you get out and explore a bit. It’s not a huge place, but there are so many things to do in Zakynthos.

Alykes Beach area is a great place to stay in Zakynthos, but even if you don’t stay in Katastari town, at least come here for a day or a half-day to eat at Porto Paradiso (or the other restaurants listed) and laze on the sand for a bit. It’s a chilled out and safe place to swim and sunbathe.

Regardless if you decide on public areas of the beach or private hotel areas, a lot of sofa seat options for choice and relax. Let enjoy a cold drink from the seaside.

Hike to the top of Bartolome Island in the Galapagos

When you are traveling around the world you quickly realize that many attractions require the need for climbing of some sort (see the Bucket List of 15 Things to Climb in the World for exhausting examples). When I heard that it was 374 steps uphill to the peak of Bartolome Island in the Galapagos, I began having flashbacks of the 463 steps to the top of Florence’s Duomo.

Climbing that wasn’t pretty. It was where I learned that a 78-year-old great grandmother was in better physical shape than me. Painful. On so many levels.

But, the peak of Bartolome Island was known to have the most perfect view of the famous Pinnacle Rock. There was no way that the avid bucket lister in me would miss scaling this volcanic cone to see a unique perspective of one of the most photographed natural structures in the Galapagos Islands.

So the journey began to the land where the human population is ZERO…

We took a panga from our home on the water, Ecoventura’s Letty yacht, and disembarked on the dock of Bartolome Island where a sea lion basking in the sun greeted us. The islet, located in Sullivan Bay to the east of Santiago Island, was barren besides two small groups of visitors and a few lazy lava lizards.

The gang that I was with eagerly started to ascend the 600 meter trail, a planked walkway which protects the lunar-like landscape from human erosion.

The beginning of the hike had the slightest incline, which allowed me to enjoy the mostly brown land that looked like it was straight from an episode of Star Trek.

A variety of volcanic formations lined the trail: spatter cones, lava tubes and lava bombs.

We even made a pit stop in order to hold a large lava rock, which looked as if it would be incredibly heavy, but really weighed mere ounces.

This was looking like something straight out of a cartoon.

Continuing on, the path steepened. The smooth walkway turned into stairs and my gasping for breath increased. I knew this was coming.

I stopped to “take photos”, a disguise for getting a moment to catch my breath.

After about a half hour we reached the top. The summit not only rewarded us with a spectacular view of Pinnacle Rock, but also Daphne Major, Daphne Mindor and the rest of Santiago Island.

As always when climbing things while traveling, the view from the 114 meter summit was worth every step.It turned out to be a great addition to my list of the top things to do before you die.

Situated in the Pacific Ocean, the Galapagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago that lie 620 miles from the South American mainland. Getting There:

If you don’t plan on spending any time on the mainland, fly into Guayaquil, since it is closer to the islands and most flights from Quito to the Galapagos stop there. If you plan on doing some exploring in Ecuador prior or after your trip, go to Quito. Its famous old town is an UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with colonial charm, bustling markets and architectural buildings. Whichever city you choose, will most likely require an overnight stay.

The Galapagos Islands has two airports, one on San Cristóbal and the other on Isla Baltra, just north of Santa Cruz. Which airport you choose will depend on how you have decided to explore the islands. The flight from Guayaquil to the islands is approximately an hour and forty-five minutes (about 40 minutes from Quito to Guayaquil). Domestic flights can be booked through TAME, Avianca or LAN.

It is a requirement to have a naturalist with you when exploring the protected islands; you cannot just venture off on your own.

Though you may be able to hop onto a last-minute cruise when you reach the islands, it’s best to book well in advance, at least 3-4 months during non-peak times and 6 months to a year during high tourist months.

When arriving to either of the two Galapagos airports, travelers must pay a $100 per person ($50 for children under 12) Galapagos National Park entrance fee at immigration.

A visa is not required to enter Ecuador, though make sure your passport does not expire within 6 months of arrival.

It is strictly prohibited to touch or otherwise disturb the nature or wildlife of the Galapagos. Do not feed the animals (not even a drop of water) or leave behind any sort of litter.

Packing Tips:

Exploring the Galapagos typically means being on a boat, so make sure that you load up on motion sickness medication. Some days can get pretty choppy and seasickness can even affect those not prone to it. Try the sea-band wristband or Dramamine’s less drowsy formula.

A dual-purpose Keen style active shoe would work well. Also, bring a comfortable pair of deck shoes to wear while just hanging out on the boat.

Don’t forget an underwater camera to capture the incredible marine life. I use a GoPro, but if you want a cheaper option just get an underwater case for your phone.

Most tours will provide snorkeling gear (masks, tube, fins and wet suit), but consider at least bringing your own mask. A properly fitted one can enhance your snorkel experience and lessen the chances of missing marine-life because of having to fiddle with your gear.

You can leave the makeup and blow dryers at home since you will most likely be in and out of the water several times per day.

Bring a small daypack to take along on the hikes.

Pack a dry bag to store all your electronics. It can get tricky moving from the small panga to shore while carrying your camera equipment and you want to make sure it is protected.

If you are taking a cruise, there will be some down time and very limited Internet. Bring a book or download movies to your laptop prior to leaving home.

It gets hot in the Galapagos and a long-sleeved UPF shirt to protect you from the sun while hiking or snorkeling can save your shoulders from a brutal burn.
