You’ve never been one for parties. You’re more of one for cold nights at bars, if you could bring yourself to go out, having a couple beers and then going back to wherever Peixes (Feferi, as she insisted on being called) had set you up. You were enlisted as a captain in her guard just a couple years ago, and she scared you shitless then, but she’s really not that bad. A bit of a softie, really, and you thank your lucky stars for that, because you would be found dead in a ditch under anyone else’s command. Not many can tolerate your tongue, sharp and vulgar as it is. Not many can tolerate you in general. So, yeah. You’re not one for parties. 

Today is special, though. Feferi had hit you with her guppy eyes and talked about how much it would mean to her, really, to have one of her top captains at this party. It’s such a nice night, isn’t it, Karkat? And it’s not raining for the first time in weeks so it’s all pleasantly warm in the evening, bless this semi-tropical weather, you’ll just have to see it. You’d made a show of it, but you were ready to cave in an instant. Besides, you wanted to see this party for yourself. And here you are, bumping elbows with dozens of bumbling aristocrats as the sun begins to set.

Across the floor, you catch a pair of blue eyes, and the man attached to them gives you a blinding grin before shuffling through the crowd towards you. It makes your heart go soft. If Gamzee could see my pathetic ass now, you think. Fawning like a child.

John is an ambassador, royal-born, brother to the acting head of state. You’ve known him for a month or two, after a rather treacherous start in which he spilled a drink on you and you went nothing less than fucking ballistic. To be fair to you, you were having a bad night, and he’d laughed it off like you weren’t threatening to gut him and feed him his intestines, and then you’d got on fine. Just like that.

He’s dressed to the nines, of course. His suit is blue, bright and vivid and him, and his cufflinks are a shining gold with a yellow tie to match. His hands are covered by white satin gloves. John is a gentleman. Gentlemen don’t dance with the likes of you. But he holds his hand out all the same, and gives you a cheeky grin. In the background, the music shifts, growing slightly louder. Or that’s just you. He has a way of making things seem more than they are. 

“May I?” His voice is light, airy, a tone of humor to it. You resist the urge to kiss the words from his mouth.

“It’s a lovely night,” you mutter to him as you take his hand in yours. The gentle satin of his glove is soft against your fingers. There’s a slight breeze, just strong enough to tease the ends of your ill-fitting jacket. The glow of golden hour dusts his cheeks, the edges of his wind-mussed hair. It must have been windier on the way here. He’s gorgeous. “Rare to get a good one in this shithole.”

He laughs, tilts his head forward to knock his forehead against yours. You’re reminded of the way your glasses had clinked together at the reception. A toast to a dry night. Summers are wet, here, with practically half a hurricane’s worth of rain every night. You hadn’t lied; it really was rare to get an evening it didn’t pour. “It’s not that bad here. I like the rain, and the sunsets are always nice.”
