Maybe you've answered this before, but which of the bleach movies are you favorites? Do you like them in general? I feel like I've watched the DDR 100 times, but the movies aren't really talked about much in general it seems....

Neither of us really think about them as discrete "movies"—we take them more as a collection of elements, many of which we find very appealing. I think we’ve rewatched them almost annually since 2020, but I’m not sure either of us could actually explain to you what happens in them. We’re too distracted by the dazzling glamor of the Elements.

I will say, like you, Diamond Dust Rebellion holds a special place in my heart! It was the only one that premiered during my first stint with Bleach, and I definitely have vague but fond memories of watching a raw copy on an 11" iBook that I assume was approximately 120p.

Here are my personal favorite Elements from all the Bleach movies—some of which are scenes, some of which are character moments, and some of which are honestly… the laundry lint equivalent of "things that were part of this movie" that I still really love because, as this post will immediately make clear, I have serious Blorbo Disease.

MOVIE 1: Memories of Nobody

1. Commuting: Honestly obsessed with the fact that Hitsugaya and Matsumoto spend so much of this movie commuting. They just keep… going back and forth between dimensions? AND FOR WHY. Peak Gotei efficiency!

2. Bridge Whimsy: The scene where everyone jumps off the bridge into the water and are super duper extra about it. @dont-look-up has a great gifset of Renji and Rukia trying out for the Soul Society Diving Team. 

Hitsugaya and Matsumoto are also great in this scene. They’re both crouched in the same nook of bridge for some reason? And when Matsumoto encroaches on Hitsugaya’s space he wordlessly moves her arm out of the way and it’s so casual and non-eventful. Love that for them but also love that for the animation, because it’s an "unnecessary" non-eventful movement that got to be drawn and animated. You can’t have unscripted movement in this medium—it adds nothing and everything! Unfortunately, searching "bridge" on B3 didn’t turn that gifset up, so it wont’ be includd in this post.

3. Blobby Hisagi: Speaking of animation, Hisagi basically only appears in this movie as a blobby smudge of color in the background. My co-blogger put together a comprehensive account of every time Hisagi shows up in this  movie, and it is a post I love dearly.

* Honorable mention to the kidou cannon, which comes up a lot in conversation, considering how little reason there is to do so. But THE KIDOUUUUU CANNONNNNN

MOVIE 2: DiamondDust Rebellion

1. LAWSON TRUCK!!!!

There’s a transition scene where a Lawson truck randomly drives by and I am OBSESSED with it. I mean, I love Lawson, which is a Japanese convenience store chain. But most of the stores/brands in Bleach are either generic or made up, as is true of many anime. Yet there’s a real, honest to god Lawson Truck in this movie. It makes me wonder if there was some kind of Lawson promo that went with DDR’s release. Anyway, I see you, Lawson Truck. I love you.

2. Hitsugaya's Bow: After finding himself in Ichigo’s bed after passing out in the forest outside Karakura (and, one assumes, bleeding all over his sheets), Hitsugaya leaves without a word in the dead of night. But he still takes the time to bow at the Kurosaki house, as thanks for its hospitality. I love this quiet, quotidian gesture in the midst of a whole lot that is neither quiet nor quotidian. 

3. DETECTIVE BYAKUYA. BYAKUYA, ON THE CASE. This is best explained by my earlier post about this.

It’s best dramatized by the second music video I’ve ever made in my life, a tribute to Detective Byakuya and Law and Order: Soul Society.

4. Hisagi/Kira vs. Hitsugaya is one of my favorite short fights (maybe one of my favorite fights, period??) in Bleach. Hisagi gets to be incredibly cool and use a bunch of kidou and backflip onto a torii gate. Hisagi and Kira are then immediately annihilated by Hyourimaru’s shikai once Hitsugaya decides he doesn’t have enough HP left to deal with this shit, but Hisagi and Kira were very cool up until that point!

I’m certain Hitsugaya is capable of annihilating Hisagi and Kira whenever he wants, but I do want to note that it wasn’t exactly a fair fight. Hisagi and Kira didn’t want to hurt him, particularly since he was already heavily injured. Hitsugaya, uh, did not have similar qualms.

5. ZABIMARU EXPREEEEEEEEEEEESS

MOVIE 3: Fade to Black

1. Byakuya Discovers Doors: One day I’m gonna get it in gear and make a gifset for this, because this scene is the BEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO ME IN MY LIFE. There’s a full sequence of Byakuya combing through the Kuchiki Estate and opening every single door. Just walking around. Opening all the doors. In the dead of night.

And OKAY, the context for this is that he’s in Detective Byakuya mode; he can sense that something is amiss but isn’t able to discern what—he’s searching for anything that will help the missing pieces fall into place. (The missing piece is Rukia’s entire existence.) But it’s not like he tells any of his retainers this so for all they know he’s just going around opening all the doors in the dead of night, and they have to quietly follow behind him and close them all, murmuring, "ah yes, our Lord Byakuya, always working. Very thorough examination of doors and hinges tonight." I love him.

2. Hitsugaya is 11th Division's Foster Captain: Hitsugaya is working with Ikkaku and Yumichika in this movie for some reason—like, goes out to Inuzuri with them, even as he’s left Matsumoto behind to do work with their actual division. This is important to me only because it’s not the only time he’s been the 11th’s foster captain?? I’m not even talking about the Advance Team arc, which is something else entirely. In the Bount arc, when Zaraki is similarly indisposed/unreachable, Hitsugaya also ends up in charge of the 11th. Like, who decides this???

Anyway thank you, whatever bureaucratic processes makes this happen over and over again; I appreciate you. I’m sure Hitsugaya Suffers every time. (But he also probably prefers this over any other option, because the second option is probably just "idk 11th go freeball it do whatever you want!!". Also, Hitsugaya is always volunteering for this stuff.)

MOVIE 4: Hellverse

Okay, we just saw this movie (well, we just saw all of them, but this one was last!), but I’m not remembering a lot of it right now because it’s low on Blorbo Disease triggers. I do very much enjoy the Six Hearts gang running around in Squarespace (Hell)!! But this post is very long, so I’ll just say:

1. Byakuya Projecting by offering his fairly lengthy opinions about Ichigo and Yuzu, considering he’s known of Yuzu’s existence for about 2 seconds and she has been bereft a soul and comatose the entire time. 

2. Why is Hitsugaya even here, edition 90009: I love the fact that Hitsugaya is part of this Hell Portal team at all. Byakuya and Ukitake make some sense, in that Rukia and Renji are the Gotei officers most involved with this. But why is Hitsugaya there lol. I like to think that he thought it would be a good opportunity to learn about portals, and considers this professional development.

my favourite iterations of him are scu tails, classic tails and sonic boom tails!!! i h/c him as autistic, having anxiety, low self-esteem but also being really cheerful and nonchalant about a lot of stuff. i enjoy trans tails of all kinds, but i believe in cis gnc tails.

👔Design process for [x] character 

oh my god guys ask me about my magical girl designs and i will go insane i will type up a whole essay. i'll talk about kyrie cause i like her a lot

here's the design! so she drowned (or rather, was drowned by someone else) at 16 after being stalked for a couple months and eventually kidnapped. not exactly the lightest story, but bc it was so traumatic her brain erased the memories, and she doesn't find out the real cause of death until much later in the story, when kye comes across a guy who lived in kyrie's town and gets the full story.

her outfit is themed after ophelia for. obvious reasons. i looked up paintings/common interpretations of ophelia and found that she was commonly depicted in a white and gold dress with reddish-brown hair half up. oh, and flowers. so i ran with that. the white streaks in her hair were actually not part of the initial plan, but when i was using the bucket tool it left blank streaks and i just thought it looked nice.

for the flowers i chose forget-me-nots because she loses her memory, and then the hands on the skirt represent her fight to stay alive (both while drowning and before) and how she reached out for help in the months leading up to her death but no one answered. she's also, in a way, reaching for her lost memories, who she used to be, etc etc. the blue thingy in the back was initially supposed to be a mermaid tail as like. a single callback to the little mermaid (and the fact that she was a really good swimmer, so it's ironic that she drowned), but i took the mermaid aspect out & added in the two eyes.

the eyes are like. the feeling of being watched. the eye at the front will always look at kyrie no matter what, and the eye in the back will look at anyone else it can find, as if pleading for help. i just noticed the bracelet? not sure why that's there. probably just for fun. anyways the ring with the star on it is from a play called 'the princess who had no name', which is about a princess with amnesia who's trying to find out who she is and where she came from.

and finally, the weapon! it's meant to be a sparkler, like the little fireworks yk? it's a callback to the very first draft of her character from like 2 years ago, back when the kyries shared the name lylie instead & i had written absolutely nothing about her character. but i was reading through the old plot/character info a while ago and i found out she apparently really liked fireworks??? that was like my only piece of info about her. i figured since she'd changed so much it was only fair i put a little something from her roots. but the sparkler can also represent how 'bright' she appears to be; people are drawn towards her, for better or worse.

the first fandom i remember like really being hyperfixated on was.... miraculous ladybug................. BUT i didn't make any fanart for it, so instead you get the very first real piece of art i ever made on my computer :)

shoutout to me for drawing those wings by hand. i didn't know how to use the flip tool so i just spent like 4 hours trying to make them symmetrical. and now i can't even remember how to draw butterfly wings. smh

i'll go with that aubrey piece from one of the earliest questions. i like how the emotions came across in both her expression and the coloring, and how much more fluid the pose is. i think the shading & rendering is neat. overall it's a big improvement from the piece i was redrawing so im really proud of that & it's nice to see how far i've come in a relatively short amount of time

⏳Things you’d do differently with [x] drawing

using the same drawing, uhh... idk there's some stuff with the proportions that like. sometimes looks fine to me and sometimes looks off? i really just eyeball anatomy and stuff so it's not always particularly Good. i like the colors i have here but they're not the colors i was intending to use. i didn't really know how to draw the jacket and everything i did with the top just looked strange so they're not As Detailed or 'good' as they probably could be? there's parts where i got lazy and all that but all in all i really like this drawing and nothing big really jumps out at me, these are all just nitpicks

Top Ten Disney Couples

Well it’s been 100 years of Disney and with Valentine’s Day soon I’ve decided to mark the occasion by counting down my favorite Disney couples. I know that the House of Mouse is an evil capitalist empire that needs to stop eating IP’s and should at the very least pay their employees better. But they have a lot of blorbos so let’s see who I like together.

Now this is a couple list, not a ship list. So canon couples only. Not even if I like the ship. So two characters hugging once doesn't count. Now without further adieu here are the top ten disney couples.

10) Goliath/Elisa

From the early nineties classic Gargoyles, we have Goliath and Elisa. The biggest furry-ish couple on the list aside from the actual funny animals. Goliath was the leader of the mythical creatures awoken in ‘modern’ read early nineties, new york. And they met police detective Elisa Maza. And over the course of their adventure the two develop a deep longing for each other.

Putting them on the list is a bit of a cheat as their relationship never goes beyond deep pining. Due to the whole interspecies thing. I haven’t read the comics, so I’m not sure if anything came from that, but they have a great dynamic in the show.

9) Phineas/Isabella

Yeah, they ultimate well they or won’t they of Disney couples. Star and Marco tried this, but hit it a little too hard. But Isabella’s crush on Phineas is super enduring and a great source of jokes. I am bummed they waited until almost the last episode to get them together, and in a flash forward too.

I almost put Candace and Jeremy here, them getting together season two and just being a couple got big points with me. But Jeremy is kinda of bland so phinbella it is.

But Phinbella are a sweet couple.

8) Cinderella/Prince Charming

Not gonna lie, the bulk of the heavy lifting is being done by Cinderella III. But even then this couple always was the strongest of the three classical princess romances. Yes they fall in love over the course of a song like they others but the song plays while Cinderella and the Prince have a quiet conversation that the audience doesn’t hear. It’s nice compared to the bombastic songs Snow White and Sleepy Beauty had.

But even then, Cinderella III puts this on the list. Giving the couple some struggling, and the Prince a fun goofy personality.

7) Donald/Daisy

The ultimate disgruntled couple. Told over the series and comics, Donald and Daisy are the ultimate on again and off again whirlwind. It’s fun to see how these two are played.

Donald’s grumpy demeanor plays off of Daisy’s sass really well.

6) Belle/Beast

Okay, elephant in the room. Stockholm Syndrome is bad. Hot take, I know. Elements of this romance are really, really bad when applied to real life. But in fiction, two people bonding and learning to grow in extreme situations is a good story.

These two were the first princess romance that felt equal. The classical Princes, and even Prince Eric felt like props. The movie lives up to its title and makes both feel equal in a way we hadn’t seen before. Watching Belle’s good nature warm Beast’s heart is nice. And seeing Beast learn to like himself is nice too. Gaston's self centeredness and entitlement is a great foil for these two.

5) Kim/Ron

Not gonna lie, did not actually ship these two during the first three seasons. I just thought they worked as friends. So the ending of So the Drama was a bit of a head tilt moment for me. But once season four showed them as a couple, it just worked. It didn’t need to break the characters or their dynamic to make them work as a couple. I wish more shows realized this.

4) Jasmine/Aladdin

Jasmine and Aladdin are great. Both of them want the same thing, respect. Aladdin wants to be seen more as just a thief and Jasmine wants to be more than just a royal and be free to make her own choice. It gives their romance a nice synergy.

Also having two whole movies and a tv series before the two tie the knot helps with the whole too fast relationship thing that plays the other Disney princesses.

3) Rapunzel/Flynn

This is the latest main Disney romance in their animated movies. That’s weird right? Tangled was almost 13 years ago. I know Anna and Kristoff are a couple, but that’s a subplot compared to the sister drama. Hell Frozen II even dropped the proposal subplot halfway through. I mean Disney animation is known for their couples, I guess that’s why they stopped? I guess cause princess movies are considered girl movies and girls should have more than romance. I’m not saying every movie needs it but I do miss it.

But Flynn and Repunzel are actually really cute together. They have great chemistry and are sweet together.

2) Mickey/Minnie

Surprisingly veristital. Mickey and Minnie are absolutely adorable with each other. Whether they're just meeting or been dating for awhile, I always enjoy seeing these two.

1) Luz/Amity

And here they are, my favorite Disney couple. And it's not just cause they're sapphic. They are a general well written couple. They set Amity up like in her second appearance. I am so glad they didn't drag getting these two goobers together. Because watching Amity growing and Luz getting support from her, warms my heart.

The cut kisses, blushes, and pet names have done wonders for my mental health. Now there is still one more episode so it's possible to fumble at the finale line but I trust the staff.

I am a certified cat person™. I have one of my own (though she lives in my parents’ house and I only see her when I visit):

I was born with a cardiomyopathy. I’m on mild medication (by which I mean no side effects and no problems if I miss one dose) and I have some standard medical tests once or twice a year. I cannot do heavy exercise or push any limits (which, due to not being able to exercise my whole life, are low considering my young age). I am able to be independent though I'm eligible for some disability benefits. And yes, that means I’m in a high-risk group for any disease, not just covid or the flu.

I find dogs cute as well, but I prefer cats for myself.

I don’t want to have children. I like working with them as a music educator, but I don’t think I’d ever have the patience to actually be a good parent for life. Plus I have a ton of crappy genes, first and foremost of my own disease, so why spread them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I attend therapy sessions. Sometimes I talk here about my sessions, or about things I want to say in them. I tag those posts as “nette therapy” so you can filter that if you want.

I love travelling. Thanks to being a part of several choirs while studying, I’ve visited various places in Europe, and I hope to be able to visit more.

I do not tolerate hate that’s aimed at innocent people - and that goes from hate for race, gender, sexuality etc. to hate for what fictional character each other likes. If what the other person is doing is in no negative way affecting someone else, I will not tolerate hate on my blog about them. I used be a person who judged others for what fictional characters/ships they liked, and I know now how miserable I was to act that way, and I’m trying to move on and become better.

finished willdress s1. i think it was pretty decent, the last few episodes were a solid 9 but the first half was like... a strong 7 at best. the anime needed an extra 13 episodes that's for sure, but i think the semifinal fights were so awesome, and the new characters were resoundingly great.

the post got a little long so my thoughts under the cut. i spoil obviously.

the episode where it was raika v tohya was pretty great cause it was all the new characters (the ones with actual presence) commentating. i do think -dress's greatest weakness is how blackout are a set piece and its refusing to break them up even a little, but by the third season its like, eh? they definitely contributed to how "okay" the first half of the series felt... i don't care about yuyu, zakusa's aight, i love tomari, tohya is better for leaving, megumi isn't suddenly gonna matter to me but i think it's funny they're driving the jobber angle so hard with her, at least it's honest.

and down in the nitty gritty that's what i enjoyed about willdress the most so far, even if it was very rushed it didn't really force a lot of conventions— raika and yuyu hate each other's guts by the end still but raika acknowledges blackout nonetheless. i do think it is in character for him to concede that much i guess, given he lost. i guess what i'm saying is "things made sense"— i think a big issue with not only vanguard but a lot of anime in general is that it seems like in an effort to resolve things, characters are bent in ways that are kind of irksome. like, i'll never get why anyone got along with kai in the original series aside from idk, miwa and aichi. getting along is kind of pushing it,

but speaking of kai, i find raika quite refreshing because he's a born hater. there's no real excuse for his behavior: he grew up to be an unpleasant person. i think there's a lot of people like that in hobby spaces, people who develop superiority inferiorty complexes because they're chronic tryhards first and foremost. as mentioned before i like that he is still a hater. come s2 i hope he keeps being a stupid bitch boy.

i do think my favorite characters however were urara and michiru. i don't think there is anyone who watched the show who would disagree with my assessment. urara was the beating heart of this season no questions asked. i don't think there was a single moment that had me going "what the fuck is she doing?!" because she was solid. it's quite easy to mess up shrinking violet blorbo characters imo. i would have loved more episodes to flesh out her troubles, but out of everyone, her arc was the most strongly realized and it is satisfactory enough as it is. she achieves both being cute and being a well constructed character all at once, despite the limited runtime alotted to each character. as the beginner character this season, i really do wish she had been the protagonist instead of yuyu... i don't have much to say about him in particular except that i was just going "lol idc" for most of his screentime. for some reason he became a really cool guy for the last few episodes of the season... but i don't consider it. it doesn't feel thoroughly earned. definitely an issue of the anime being one cour. but yeah, she kind of reminds me of naoki from the original in a way, except she avoids the pitfalls naoki had... i do think it was quite cool that naoki SUCKED ASS at vanguard but i loved that urara had a strong win record. the fight that ended her streak was quite good, she didn't feel cheated out of it at all like it usually feels like when a female character loses in vanguard. L O L.

i thought i wouldn't have much to say about michiru, but what a tour de force of a character. THIS is how you do GAR, not whatever the fuck they were doing with danji in season 1. it's not enough to say "this character is well liked and awesome". that's a lot of tell, no show. not to mention danji's actions were rather aggravating and got in the way of the plot constantly to the point where i remember the first season was more than halfway and it was nothing but danji dicking around performing clamp brand cringe. none of that with michiru: he looks like he just got out of bed constantly... and has looked this way for at least a decade. it's kind of amazing. he might as well be 40 years old and i'm subscribing to that idea personally. i was worried that they'd write the character voiced by a famous johnny's idol(!) to be a lame overpowered Thing, but he was incredibly charming. he really is overwhelmingly strong after all, but they made the right call of pushing him to the background and making him a moeblob who does funny funnies and can't read the room sometimes. infinitely charismatic character. he is everyone's ideal, and no one seems to be able to reach him, even though he's so down to earth... i truly do love the contrast. raika being a huge fanboy adds to it because when he finally lost me and fabio kept hooting and hollering and that was probably the only way i think most people were gonna root for yuyu at all— if raika's entire raison d'etre crumpled up and collapsed before his eyes (it happened quite literally too....hehehehe. iykyk.)

small bit for taizo— the only character who feels a little robbed, but i do think it was a little brave of them to kill him off and not let him advance to the semis out of courtesy of him not being one of the non-characters. but i guess that's how the bracket works given he lost two or three times in a row? (i forgot, but he missed his chance thoroughly). i hope his promise to not give up on his dream of capitalism means he'll be in s2 cause i quite liked him, i wasn't as invested in him as urara but it really is a case of feeling bad for the loser, you know.

dunno when we'll catch up to s2 but i hope it's while it's still airing. i like the designs of the new characters :)

Tenshii (the blue haired one) is determined to do whatever he can to save as many supernatural creatures from tragic fates as possible~ he died and was brought back wrong and we decided he can just have litterally any problem you want to project on him and thats what he came back wrong as <3 its very fun <3 he suffers <3 hes trying desprately to pretend hes okay and he took on this angelic persona to help rpevent his friend snad loved ones from worrying about him and one day he will collapse if someone doesnt stop him <3 he wants to be perfect and okay no matter what and its hard on him! The girl has no name yet but shes a vampire and a video game developer and she will usually be fairly kind for a vampire but if you say no when she asks nicely if she can feed on you shes just going to hunt you anyways its really a mtater of do you want to do this the easy way or the hard way, she cant really afford the energy to not hunt a human once shes caught them. She does however have standards for what is and isint acceptable to do to a human shes hunting. She isint really very morally sound despite this. Shew ill absolutely psychologically play with someone making up some elaborate cafe meet cute slow burn romance with someone just to drink their blood and run. She and Tenshi bond both over their shared love of video games and he thinks he can fix her. theyre meant to be unhealthy- The idea of this art peice is "pov you were just about to be hunted for food but this fricking weird guy named Tenshii just showed up and interupted it and the cute vampire you were talking to is going to throw a tantrum"

I think of myself as being pretty strongly a "persuade me" reader-- like, if I find a premise far-fetched but you persuade me, I am going to be genuinely excited about it. I recognize and admire when people are doing something that has a high degree of difficulty.

But I also think back to classroom teaching and seeing people's belief that all interpretations were equally valid play out in real time.

Sometimes that belief played out in blatant sexism and racism-- and it was my job to counter that in the moment, because it's hurtful to students of color and/or female students to just let that hang in the air.

Sometimes the interpretation wasn't aggressive toward another student but was simply an indicator that the opiner hadn't read the material. "Okay, show us where you're getting that" was usually the best way to assimilate that comment into productive discussion-- whether or not it led to the student doing the reading next time, it at least reinforced the point that this is a class in which the source material is important, and it engaged other people in looking for relevant evidence.

Sometimes the interpretation was just based on a factually incorrect premise. For example, it did not honor the laws of physics, in a situation where that was relevant to the argument the student was trying to advance? Again, pretty easy to counter gently and without ridicule by pointing to, say, GRAVITY, and then moving on to point to the parts of their reasoning that would have actually worked pretty well, were the starting point not kind of fucked for its context. This kind of issue tended to generate animated, non-hostile discussion (and also an occasional good one-on-one later about "have you ever thought about writing speculative fiction?").

And every once in a while there was the kind of uncategorizable interpretation that Wolfgang Pauli would have referred to as not even wrong, because it took a bullshit premise, applied logic that if it had any internal consistency kept it lovingly hidden from readers, and ended up in "My shoes are made of cheese" land. That was past assimilating into a conversation about the text we all shared. And the only thing I could do with it was say "WELP," regroup for 15 seconds, and then change the subject.

When I'm reading for fun, I'm not teaching comp, literary analysis, or creative writing. I'm clear no one's asked me for that-- it's not our dynamic. But I definitely do have some of those same reactions I would have had in the classroom while reading fic. I read from the premise that the source material is important, and that if someone didn't actually like the source material, they'd be much happier writing fiction without its constraints. (Or at least introducing an original character to kiss their blorbo who doesn't share a name with someone who already has well-defined preferences and motivations in the source text.) And that premise has bearing on what I want to read and engage with.

i loved my husbandos from the terror because they both had "secrets": firstly they were both racialized, but still outwardly *white* - francis was racialized by irishness, james wasnt 'racialized' in that sense but was rather haunted by an internal racial conception of himself as a half brazilian bastard (something disputed in the *real* life of the historical figure - a "fact" popularized by bad methodology but made *fact* in the show); secondly, james was *sick* in the show, and his scurvy is made to signify loss of control, which is visually represented by private fantasies of femininity. these aspects of each character opened them up, on some structural basis (the structure of marginal subjectivity) to further, fantastical marginalization, especially along the lines of sex - this was the drawing point for many in the fanbase, the notion that they were primed for becoming transgender (fan writers projecting trans subjectivity onto their blorbos)

roman is primed along those same lines - he represents marginal difference w/in the family structure, sexual/gender difference; he is a pervert; etc. yet the narrative structure of his marginality resists this "trans projective identification", bc his difference is *never* explicitly articulated, instead presented as a diffuse *feeling* of marginality, characterized rather by various and polymorphous perversions which resist the same reification as my previously mentioned husbandos. as such, he is a figure of the *new* kind of husbando, evidenced by his widespread husbandification by people outside fandom - he is a dog, he is difference itself, he is a walking secret animal... in opposition to francis and james, or maybe even kendall, who invite a projective identification which is literally *primed* for the narrative structure of most *good* fanfiction, that is, fiction which fetishizes marginalization

Hey bestys I can't sleep I have stuff to do tomorrow and I finished an anime today that I have been rbing abouts soo I might as well give some context about what bofuri actually is huh.

The next season is coming out sometime this year and I highly encourage you guys to watch it if you're looking for something silly !! :] the full title is BOFURI: I Don't Want To Get Hurt So I'll Max Out My Defense. And it is long. And basically explains the entire concept of the anime <3

In short a girl (Kaede but she goes by maple in-game and that's the main focus of the whole thing) plays a vr game as requested by her friend (Risa but she goes by Sally in-game !! In the first few episodes she's grounded so she couldn't play with Kaede) and she has like never played a video game in her life so she's not familiar with mechanics . She is also very clumsy and a Nitwit (affectionate) so she decides to put literally all of her status points throughout the show into defense. So she is slow and weak but she's a tank for sure!!!! She's insanely overpowered because she finds a lot of special skills on accident by completely defying the game's normal logic (she eats a hydra and a demon and gains its powers <33)

However she has no idea how weird that actually is to other players and is confused and embarrassed when she zooms through the ranks in the first event she participates in as she's like level 6 by then but literally invincible <3 the admins nerf her abilities so it's not entirely impossible to beat her but with the power of Weird And Stupid And Encouraged (once again, affectionate) she earns even more skills that basically counter the admin efforts until they basically give up because she's attracting new players anyway and if everyone thinks it's fun then meh

It can get a little insane and maybe annoying how op she is but she's sweet to literally everyone even after going on a massacre rampage and her friends she makes in-game and their dynamics are wonderful :] there's no real danger and though the stakes can seem high from time to time a majority of it is just silly and fun. The voice acting is awesome and the character design is cute!! If you haven't noticed I particularly enjoy kanade because wtf. He fits my criteria!!!! Not my blorbo criteria but just. Like. Another one I have not named yet

In his heart, he's a bastard. A master of getting people to do what he wants. He shows no hesitation in having Woz serve him, perfectly willing to call him on a whim. He'll command armies of destruction without wincing. But he's so sweet and loves his friends so much. But he'll never give up his dream for them. They simply need to learn why his dream is so great.

Like, Ryuki is already a masterpiece but I think about Tojo specifically so much. He's just a fucked up little guy! Sensei look at me! Sensei are you proud of me? Sensei, I can be the hero you want. Sensei, if a hero is one who sacrifices what they love and grows stronger for the greater good, I can do that. You were the most important person in my life, Sensei, so that's why I have to lose you.

He wants to be a hero so bad. But he wants to be a hero because he wants Sensei to be proud of him. Really, he wants sensei to give up his wife and family so he can have sensei's attention.

And he's such a poignant part of Ryuki's idea of people achieving their dreams, not through magic or miracles, but because they did something.

5. My Best Girl

Sweet-P from Caligula

I adore Sweet-P so much. She puts up with so much as being not only one of the oldest among the musicians but having to babysit Shadow Knife, Stork and Shonen Doll. Like what did she do to deserve that? She put up with so much in reality and now she's expected to play babysitter when she just wants to have tea parties with her friends!

I know people don't like Overdose, specifically related to her, but I actually really enjoyed her story. There's a lot she doesn't like about herself and her appearance. You get the feeling of someone who truly does feel they've left living their life for themself too late. And she has to work to overcome disliking herself, instead of trying to change herself. While Caligula is messy in things like its depiction of weight, Sweet-P ultimately puts focus on it not mattering. Her friends know they're fat but they're happy. They're more upset that the real world won't accommodate them or share in their happiness. Sweet-P can start to accept she doesn't have to give up one happiness to achieve another. She can transition and still eat what she loves. She just needs to do what makes her happy, not what she feels she has to do. It puts a real interest in what a character wants versus what a character needs. Sweet-P wants to be a cute (petite) girl. She needs to do what makes her happiest, even if it doesn't achieve what she wants.

Unlike Sweet-P, he gets thrown in the deep end with people who are like yea let's blow stuff up and he's desperately going "wow is that a shark wow" to move on.

He's in so deep over his head.

So much of their backstory is just hidden away in P2 (and let me tell you I adore P2 for how much missable content there is) but oh how I think about them. Akinari didn't do the right thing. But he wasn't evil. He did what he thought was right, and did his best. Tatsuya latched onto him and saw someone to lean on. Someone who cared for him when no one else would. Who didn't see him as a bother, but as someone amazing and special and he wasn't a monster - for just a little while. And Tatsuya would carry that on, seeing Akinari in Jun.

And Akinari's own life falls apart because he's trapped in a marriage he was never fully on board for but society pushed him into. Despite it, he loves his son and will do anything for him. AND I STAND BY AKINARI JUST WASN'T THE KIND OF MAN TO DIE HOW HE DID. I WILL NEVER ACCEPT THAT.

Also, I'm always thinking about how Sudou is so separated from Akinari-Nyarlathotep in the masked circle. Like he doesn't cling to that Akinari how he did the real one. I always feel like he knew and accepted no one would believe him on it.

My partner is very loving as I tell them for the 15th time today about LBH and SVSSS and my blorbo thought pollution. I have been talking about him non-stop since SVSSS Vol 3 was originally meant to release but then it didn't so I just didn't shut up cause the brain worms were so strong. What am I meant to do???

I think LBH should be an honorary kitty cat for how much he loves his Shizun. He deserves to join the kitty cat club. He's just a big boy that cries a lot and is so desperate for love and attention. He needs headpats and to be housewifed. It's his preferred state of being but people aren't willing to accommodate that!! The world is too cruel to him!! And I want him to be so big and imposing to then hit people with his being a needy housewife

I feel like I should explain the whole ‘blorbo’ situation to you… I had to do a little bit of research but I don’t mind if it at least means a little less being lost on this site for both of us.

The term blorbo is a newer term on here and it came from a post talking about how someone can make a more generic post about a fandom- like talking about the character but not naming them in the post but in the tags? Anyways, they were talking about how people bring their own favorite characters from entirety different shows and make it about that character instead of the original poster’s character? Blorbo I’m guessing is a random word they made up for this but it stick and now blorbo essentially translates to a character someone deeply loves or appreciates and will bring up to a point of being potentially annoying. For example, let’s say I deeply like this one character from A Legend of Sword and wouldn’t stop bringing them up, or somehow the most random of things makes me think of that character (like rice or something, I’m making stuff up here)- that I guess could be my blorbo.

Eeby deeby is a replacement term for a strange destination of some kind. That one came from some post about going up an elevator, but having no idea which floor because the screen eeby deeby. Some reason it’s implied they’re going to a purgatory of some kind as denoted by ‘eeby deeby’ which is from what I’ve read is supposed to be like a robot sound. I think that one gained traction because it tied into the superhell joke that a lot of supernatural fans were making when two dudes confessed to liking each other in the show and one got killed pretty much right after and went to the empty- aka, according to fandom, is superhell. I don’t know, I didn’t watch the show.

Glup Shitto apparently is a little joke to jab at the Star Wars fandom for how the names of a lot of the characters sound like gibberish. But also it’s also used as a fake name for a returning character in the series (usually the more obscure parts of the media like a small book trilogy rather than the mainstream films) and praised by hardcore fans but practically unknown to those who are more in the mainstream media of that universe rather than the more obscure portions. It picked up more speed when a new show for the franchise was released that was pretty mainstream brought back a lot of more obscure characters from like the animated shows aimed at a more older kid to young teenage audience.

Plinko horse apparently came from a video of a series of animations. The animations were being used as a visual on how things are projected to move and interact I suppose? Plinko horse was specifically from the Real Time Collision section, with a horse being dropped through a plinko-like board and going through the pegs, biting different ones on the way down. Apparently it made rounds on other sites first (https://youtu.be/Slt4z55PBhI, this is apparently a catalyst for its popularity). Gifs were made and those all had jokes made about them and it just kinda spread. Somehow this amuses us and it’s just now a thing.

Still no idea what scrunglo means, but if I find that one out, I’ll tell you! Hopefully some of this explains a little about tumblr slang.

I think I understand now. So blorbo is somebody's favorite character one can't stop thinking of. And the word is just a placeholder for their name as the maker of the original post wanted to make a statement about the phenomenon without going into a specific fandom or character. It is actually quite smart. This is, essentially, how new words are introduced to a language.

Well, eeby deeby is a... quite funny sound I would say. That being interpreted as "superhell" however, is a little peculiar. Though the contrast itself between the funny and the serious sounding might be exactly what's making the comparison comedic. That, and the timelines coinciding with the surgence of each meme, that is a recipe for an internet gag indeed.

Glup Shitto... another combination of comedic sounds and inside knowledge of a certain fandom. I'm starting to see a pattern here.

The plinko horse seems to be an excellent demonstration in movement, velocity and contact. Why they chose a horse as the subject... might not be relevant to the experiment itself.

This is an interesting take, but I strongly disagree.

You say that "superior fics are the ones that actively and continuously engage with their source material," and I'm with you on that, but I think you're taking too narrow a view of what it means to engage with source material.

Certainly one way of doing that is to write something that is basically a critical analysis and response to the original work in the form of a story, but that's not the only reason for writing a fic, so it's a weird thing to hold up as a judgment of what makes for "superior" fan fiction.

Let's lay aside talking about fan fic of contemporary works for a moment, because that's going to make it easier to illustrate my point.

Consider Robin Hood. He's a classic character who first showed up in ballads recounting his adventures. Throughout time, countless people came up with Robin Hood stories. Nowadays, he's so embedded in our cultural mindset that we recognize him in even the most outlandish settings.

And, by most definitions, almost every single Robin Hood we've ever seen has been a fan fic, because it was someone taking a story and characters that they didn't invent and telling them in a new way.

We do think that there are better and worse Robin Hoods, depending on which things about the character and stories are most important to us, but you can stretch him and his friends way way way out of Sherwood forest in medieval Britain without losing their core.

Now, consider Superman. He is similar to Robin Hood in many ways in terms of his cultural significance. The only real difference is that copyright law means that there is someone who gets to decide which Superman stories are "real." But if I can write a Robin Hood story that's a band of aliens sailing around the stars helping the poor and harassing interstellar government officials, then I can write a Superman who is, idk, a demi-god paladin having adventures in an ancient fantasy city.

In either case, I'd be picking up the things about the characters that are most important to me, and moving them into a setting that either I just happen to like more, or that I think makes those things stand out better.

But maybe Robin Hood and Superman are different. After all, they both come from vast mythologies, so it's hard to say what I'm even supposed to be in conversation with.

Let's go for something more contemporary then.

I am, at present, working on a fic about some characters from my favorite anime. I've completely sand blasted the setting and tossed out half the original plot. This was a deliberate decision made for many reasons: the characters are side characters in the original story, and I wanted them to have their own space; the original story is still in serialization, and I don't feel like dealing with continuity issues; I thought it would be fun to put these characters into a different situation and see what they'd do; I wanted to grab my blorbos and run, so I did; etc.

By your metric, this is probably a bad fic. But it's not, at heart, any different from the other examples I gave. What I took from the original story were the characters' archetypes, their relationships to each other, and enough analogous back story to explain those relationships. I flatter myself perhaps, but plenty of people seem to agree that this is actually a pretty good fic. And if I ever wanted to "shave off the serial numbers" and look into getting it published, I think it would stand on its own too.

Because the heart and core of a story are the characters, and characters as archetypes are recognizable through a lot of makeup. And that's kinda the idea. I'm not writing a critical analysis of my hero academia through the lens of transformative fiction. I'm writing a Hawks and Endeavor story. And what makes a Hawks and Endeavor story a good one is those two people and the way they relate to each other and their surrounding cast, and those relationships transcend setting.

You might think that I've picked up the wrong things about the characters, and that's okay. Different people have different connections to stories. I love Robin Hood, but I think some Robin Hood stories do a poor job of hitting on what I think is important about him. Some people are just... Really bad storytellers.

Fan fiction as it exists today is a bizarre creature born of social pressures caused largely by copyright law that allows a small number of wealthy and powerful people to think they own the stories that form our cultural heritage.

But stories are slippery beasts. They can't be so easily contained, and I think the best of them can't be contained at all. They have hearts and souls that go far beyond words on a page or people on a screen, and the whole point of fan fiction is to let those stories out to breathe.

When a story speaks to someone, and they speak back by telling another story about those characters, that is a conversation. No matter where the person puts those characters. You may not like the new story, and the person telling it may not be very good at doing so, but if you put your champagne glass down for a minute and step out of your ivory stronghold, you'd see that by declaring so much oof this work "interior" you're getting to pin the story down like a butterfly on a corkboard. And you're never going to succeed.

actually, no, i do have something to add. if your work of fanfiction can be easily rebranded and sold as original fiction, then it was never good fanfiction in the first place—and, in all probability, it won’t make for good original fiction either. i have a lot of love and respect for all kinds of derivative works (unsurprisingly, considering my perennial love affair with postmodernism), but i also believe that the superior fics are the ones that actively and continuously engage with their source material (and so it wouldn’t be possible for anyone to scratch their serial numbers off without damaging their integrity). something something mutualism (the derivative work deconstructing and expanding on the source material and so keeping it alive) as opposed to parasitism (thinking you can simply lift your blorbos wholesale and run but failing to realise that uprooting them from their respective stories will render them but a shadow of a reflection of their original selves).
