Why we assure YOU

I am a Bravo-a-holic.  Bravo TV that is.  It is so out there, a great escape from anything, I will watch any Real Housewives of whatever... even if it is the Real Housewives of the Payless Shoe Store on the corner if they film it.  Why?  It is just fun.  These crazy ladies make me laugh, make me shocked, make me say 'do people really act like that?' and it is just easy t.v.  It is where I fell in love with Bethenny Frankel, Yolanda Foster and Lisa Vanderpump, just to name a few.  Of all the seasons one person resonates with me the most... Yolanda.  She lives a clean life, is caring, loves her kids to distraction, strong and positive.  I am awed by her strength as she deals with her own medical issues and I hope to handle with the same grace.

Now that being said, why am I writing about this and what does this have to do with cancer?  I just watched a show Blood, Sweat and Heels (season 2, episode 1) and it was me on TV.  Why you ask?  What you did not ask, well I am telling you anyway. 

A cast member Daisy reveals she has cancer.  She is a single 34 year old woman, but like me, is not sure how to tell, who to tell and when she tells them SHE is the one assuring them all will be ok about HER cancer.  So me.  I am constantly reassuring others I am fine.  I am strong.  It will be ok.  Cancer picked the wrong person.  I am making THEM feel better.  It is so strange to explain unless you have gone through this.  Why are we assuring YOU healthy people?   I keep asking myself this and I came up with the answer... because YOUR reaction scares us.  YOUR reaction makes us doubt the ability to get better.  YOUR reaction sets the tone of our relationship going forward.  YOUR reaction to our news, if negative or sad in ANYWAY, puts doubt in us.

Even when folks visit, I go out of my way to show how OK I am.  How cancer has no hold on me.  And the moment I close the door after you leave... I literally need to nap, physically exhausted but glad it did not show to you.  Because I need YOU strong and believing my mantra I tell myself daily.  That this is beat.  YOU can help remind me that I will be ok.  I do not want anything changed, not our relationship, not anything in anyway.  I also do not want to talk about cancer EVERY SINGLE TIME WE TALK, other than a 'how are you feeling?' which is polite.  If I feel like talking I will go into detail, if I gloss over bring up something light hearted and/or make me laugh about it.

We need a break from cancer talk sometimes.  There is not a day that goes by where it is not brought up 2-3+ times a day by loving folks.  But sometimes you just want a break from it.
