BLOG POST #6
Blog Post 6 - Originally Noted on March 28th, 2023:
Perception and connection is a thing that can be tricky or simple in life. I think though that it depends on whose shoes you see. Page 307 of Watchman looks into this when referring to a thermodynamic miracle.
Thermodynamics refer to the study of work, heat, and energy of a system. This will make sense in a second, though first I wanted to include these quotes to go along with this, all from 307:
“But if me, my birth, if that’s a thermodynamic miracle… I mean, you could say that about anybody in the world!
“But the world is so full of people, so crowded with these miracles that they become common places and we forget…”
“We gaze continually at the world and it grows dull in our perceptions. Yet seen from another’s vantage point, as if new, it may still take the breath away.”
These quotes point out the ideas of connection between individuals. Whether it be a friendship, relationship, love just in general, it depicts that built connection. This is why referring to a thermodynamic miracle makes sense, because we are referencing the system of connection of work, heat, and energy of one another. Communication with work and energy, heat with bodies, it all plays back to that.
I also like the aspect of getting crowded we often forget, because it can relate to today’s media and how we capture our lives online. Everyone often will have judgment or opinion of one, it is just human nature. However, we might not even think in another viewpoint or change until we are in another’s vantage point, in their shoes. For example, the comments one might make on another’s relationship and who their partner is. Maybe someone doesn’t understand what they saw in someone, unless they were the individual themselves, rather than just someone scrolling through their social media feed.
It also can be noted, that even out of social media, this directs us back to acknowledging everyone’s thermodynamic miracle will be different and that when we get into it, our dull perception lessens; we get our breath taken away by another on that building connection. So, 307, in general, shows us the idea of what connection is to one and that we might not depict a perspective until we have been in their view.

Visualization
From Bill Fester in Interactive Visualization : Insight Through Inquiry, information visualization can be defined as a visual representation that can be interactive that serves the purpose of better understanding the abstract. He also states in the same breath that information visualization is similar to, if not the same, as informatics. Visualization is valuable for a number of reasons. Visualization helps people to gain a better grasp of the information they are
consuming. As detailed by Bill Fester, Visualization helps with pattern recognition in data. Pattern recognition is very important because it is the backbone of digesting the data you have. Collecting a large amount of raw data and doing analysis on it is important for any project. However, having the ability to process this data and create a visual representation of what you have collected is great for streamlining the analysis process and figuring out where the holes in your data are located. Once you take your raw data and are able to place it in a visual format, patterns will become more easily apparent. Taking that step will help anyone realize in their project what more analysis can be done. Sometimes having all the data laid out in a visual format brings to life new questions in your project. One key example of history visualization is the case of John Snow. He was the one who was able to figure out where a cholera outbreak in London had originated from. He did this by visualizing the locations of all of the sick people in London. Once he was able to see everything laid out, it became easy to see that this outbreak was from a contaminated water pump. This case is very impactful to the medical field, as it is one of the first steps away from miasma theory.
Fester also developed the ASSERT model. The ASSERT model encourages the following: to ask a question, search and structure the data, envision the result, represent the visualization, and to tell a story. This framework allows for the use of common data gathering methods to be used to tell a compelling story through visualization. This is a method that combines project based learning with the use of tools to dig deeper into these topics.
The ASSERT model is something that we can apply to the Hungerford School. Asking a question on the topic of the school to get the blood flowing into new searches for data is possible. Using the model on the Hungerford School we can pull together new questions from the data available, or see how the data valuable may suit the new questions we may have. This model could lead us to ask meaningful questions about segregated education in the American south in relation to the Hungerford School. A question that can be asked from here is what quality of education in terms of classes available was offered at the Hungerford School compared to other non black schools. The project resource bank has a wealth of information already available that can help with questions such as this. This bank provides information from different time periods that the school was open. This is a wealth of information on its own. Having different snapshots in time of the Hungerford School allows for the ability to peek through time at how things changed. The different things that were happening at each snapshot in time of the school is great information. If there was only information from one still in time, it would provide a small piece of a bigger picture. Having small pieces of information across time has this benefit. In the other direction, it would also be beneficial to have plenty of information from one snapshot in time. Both cases bring different attributes to the table. The information available now lets us gain some sort of grasp on the Hungerford School through the years. The snapshots available to us through time are also a good help to better grasp what was going on at the time in the area. This is another aspect that works multi directionally. The snapshots of the Hungerford School will give a better grasp of what not just Eatonville was like at the time, but may also allow for speculation of other areas where even less information is available. In the breath, the information from other close geographic areas may lend some added insight to the Hungerford School. The best anyone can do is work with the information they have and to make the best of it.

Defensible Claim: : "THE RESULT IS THAT TECHNOLOGY, OVERTIME AND ACROSS ECONOMIES, HAS RAISED THE STANDARD OF LIVING." Indeed it is true that technology has raised the standard in living in unthinkable ways. Technology has be the reason of viral advertisement and more. Certain things that a computer can do in minutes that humans would take much longer doing. Indefensible Claim: “When humans learn to do something, we make slow progress at first…” I disagree with this claim due to the fact that humans functioned without computers for years and years before about twenty years ago. As opposed to now, yes computers can sometimes be smarter than humans; but does this mean we will trust computers over humans? This reminds me of the discussion we had during class... would you use an online doctor (robot) or rather see an in person doctor? Majority of my class agreed seeing an in person, real life doctor should never be a question of thought especially in todays world where there are crazy diseases. Ambiguous Claim: "NEW TECHNOLOGY DOES DESTROY JOBS, BUT IT ALSO CREATES NEW ONES [...] CREATES BETTER JOBS." I believe this claim goes both ways. New technology does destroy jobs but gives people in other fields more jobs. It does not really have anything to do with whether the jobs are "better" but they are just in fact different.

Legislative action
1.
a. What is their perspective on your issue?
- Congressman Desaulnier
After visiting one of the border city and people there who had been separated from their families, he wrote an opinion saying “What we saw and heard was deeply disturbing—children were still being held in cages, pregnant mothers were sitting on concrete floors, and we heard stories of separated children being told that their parents had abandoned them. This truly is a humanitarian crisis, created by the Trump Administration and fostered by Republican Leadership in Congress, and it is occurring right here on American soil.”
Congressman Desaulnier is clearly against Trump’s project to build a border wall.
- Senator Harris
She is against the border wall because it is a waste of money that could be used for another purpose. She said “ the appropriation of $25 billion for a border wall is a waste of taxpayer money. A wall will not secure our border and I remain concerned those billions of dollars may also be used to implement this Administration’s anti-immigrant agenda”.
- Senator Feinstein
She is against the border wall as well, for an economic reason but also believing it is not going to solve immigration problem. She said “ Instead of strengthening local law enforcement and the communities they serve, President Trump is prioritizing a border wall that won’t work and a deportation force that doesn’t distinguish between dangerous criminals and hard-working families.”
b. Have they sponsored any bills that relate to your issue?
- Congressman Desaulnier
He never sponsored any bill relevant to the border wall but he sponsored some in favor of immigration. (HR858,...)
- Senator Harris
No information about a bill related to this issue.
- Senator Feinstein
She sponsored many bills related to immigration. She is almost always for a good immigration program and wants to improve it.
2. Issue : Should the Feds Accept Private Donations to Build Trump’s Border Wall?
a. Are there any bills that pertain to your issue? How many?
One bill was sponsored in favor the donations for the border wall by Rep. Diane Black (R-TN) to create an account at the U.S. Treasury dedicated to holding public donations for the completion of the wall along the United States’ southern border.
b. Choose one to analyze and click on the title. What is the bill #?
H.R. 5876
c. Briefly describe the bill in your own words.
Basically, due to the economic problem to fund the building of the wall, Rep. Diane Black introduces the Border Wall Trust Fund Act. This project consists of creating a platform where public could donate money to build the wall and make the project faster.
d. What impact will it have?
The reason the border wall’s project was stopped is because of an economic problem. This idea could then encourage people to give money if they are against immigration, without even thinking. The argument of Democrats against this border wall is then not still valid.
e. Would you vote yea or nay? Why?
Of course I would vote nay ! I am totally opposed to the border wall and I would never let people with a lot of money decide for me.
f. Review the bill progression. Did it originate in the House or the Senate? What committees have reviewed it? Where it is currently?
It was introduce in the House. No information...
g. How satisfied are you with the current Federal legislation on your issue? Explain.
I think people in the current Federal legislation on this issue are most of them opposed to this project which is pretty reassuring.
3. Article :
What is the subject of the article?
The future speaker of the house, Nancy Peloci, shot down negotiations that would include funding for President Donald Trump's long-desired wall along the nearly 2,000-mile US-Mexico border.
Who is the author?
Joe Perticone
What is the context?
Article written on December 6 just after the event occured. Source -> business insider, an international website that provides information about business news and current events.
Who is the intended audience?
Everyone
What is the bias and perspective of the author?
There is no perspective, the acticle is objective. It explains the facts without the opinion of the author. The only opinion is what Nancy Pelosi’s statement about the decision she took.
What is the significance of the article?
- Opinion and statement said by Nancy Pelosi = objective facts
- Her decision
Do you agree with it? Why or why not?
Since it is an objective article, I obviously agree about what it says. Plus, I personally agree with the decision of Mrs. Pelosi.

Developing NavigaTour’s MVP and Application Prototype
A minimum viable product, or MVP, is a product with enough features to entice new customers and validate a product concept early in the product development cycle. To put it another way, this is the process of creating a simplified product to test your hypothesis. In industries like software and IT, the MVP can help a company or startup get user feedback as soon as possible so that it can iterate and improve the product.
Furthermore, it allows businesses to cut costs and risks many times over and, with the right approach, come up with a viable business idea, as opposed to the previous methodology, in which companies create a product, launch it, and then discover that it is not a viable product. What a waste of time and money! MVP enables a company to collect as much validated learning about customers with the least amount of effort.
Developing NavigaTour’s Prototype
Mr. Ronald mentioned in his discussion that it is best to create the wireframe as a group, which we considered, but I was in charge of the layout of our application as NavigaTour's engineer. I chose a med-fidelity wireframe with Canva, which included a more accurate layout of the application. We ensured that our application has the combination of the following features in such a way that its core features solved at least one problem effectively and kept us competitive; while also including exciting features that solved a problem – something unique to our target customers. We then demonstrated our prototype to friends and family and received some positive feedbacks.
A few people mentioned how much they liked the idea of catering to everyone, including people with disabilities and those who are visually impaired. Some expressed concern about mall updates, speculating on the possibility of shop relocations within the mall. “Do you think you'll be able to update it right away?” This question raises an intriguing point, which is why we set up a separate account for management so that we can easily update the application. A few people also mentioned that they wished the color palette was a little friendlier, and I couldn't agree with them more. I actually had trouble deciding on a color for the application. I thought it would be great to stick with our brand color, but our respondents said they preferred a more user-friendly palette.
This process aided our application in the following ways: we were able to test our product hypothesis with limited resources, we received valuable feedback without hiring or wasting engineering hours, we were able to get the product to our customers, and we established required abilities in crafting our application.

Outside Source
“Breath, Eyes, Memory” by Danticat Edwidge can relate to the well known classic movie “Coming to America” with key actors such as Eddie Murphy who plays Prince Akeem who leaves his wealthy country and position to come to the hardships of America to find a wife who sees him more than just his title. The movie Coming to America I believe shows a form of irony to the novel by Edwidge, where one leaves wealth for hardship and the other poverty for hopes of wealth but both are the same destination. Coming to America and the novel both show the reality of the romanticized idea of the “American Dream” which shows that hardships are everywhere just as Sophie was dealing with in Haiti and her mother in NY trying to provide for her.

History and Nature Interpretation
“There is no peculiar merit in ancient things, but there is merit in integrity, and integrity entails the keeping together of the parts of any whole, and if these parts are scattered throughout time, then the maintenance of integrity entails a knowledge, a memory, of ancient things. …. To think, feel or act as though the past is done with, is equivalent to believing that a railway station through which our train has just passed, only existed for as long as our train was in it.” -(Edward Hyams, Chapter 7, The Gifts of Interpretation)
After reading this quote, I feel there is much to unpack. Although I believe this could be applied to many scenarios, the contents of this quote can be directly applied to nature interpretation through history. This week’s unit discussed the many ways history is presented through interpretation, and how it’s equally as important in interpreting the history of nature. As mentioned in the video from Unit 6 of the National Park Service Chief, interpretation of natural history is done to express the significance of a place, rather than just stating facts about it (C-SPAN, 2012). This is key in making emotional connections with your audience, and of course relates directly to one of the course’s three foundational questions about whether you can make an experience meaningful.
Looking back on the quote, I think the mention of “keeping together the parts of any whole” is suggesting it’s crucial to gather all parts of any story, including its history. Furthermore, the analogy of the train to me means that although past history is essential, history is happening in the present. Continuing to gather information about a place is an ongoing process that involves both past, present and future events. More importantly, how you gather this information is vital in knowing “the whole story” and acquiring as accurate of information as possible. For instance, it’s unfortunate that a large part of Canadian history is somewhat shameful. Our mistreatment of Indigenous peoples has a long and complex history that still exists today. The more history I learn, the more I realize how important it is to incorporate Indigenous stories and knowledge whenever possible. We’re still learning more to this day. As a more specific example, in Jasper National Park there’s an interpretive program that strongly focuses on Indigenous history, working with local native communities to listen to their stories and work towards reconciliation. The Park shares the dark history of its land, acknowledging fault and the many ways in which there’s still work to be done (Parks Canada Agency, 2021).
I think the train analogy may also shed light on the fact that there may be numerous people who have boarded a train at many different times. All of these people have different experiences and stories, and it’s not just about obtaining one story from one passenger from one train ride, it’s about gathering multiple perspectives. I believe this may represent the many different stories from many different people who could recount history differently even while talking about the same event. Again, highlighting how history is ever-changing the more stories and information you gather. This is important when recounting natural history as it allows us to better understand how the natural world works- I believe it is the foundation of our understanding.

Copyright - Physical vs Digital Laws
via Freepik
This is the case where two different personalities discuss about the same issue: copyright laws. Programmer Richard Stallman in “Why Software Should Not Have Owners” and scholar Lawrence Lessig in “Remix: How Creativity is Being Strangled by the Law” explore the issue of copyright and the question around the difference between digital property and physical property. Both authors recognize that the laws of physical property cannot be applied to the digital sphere, however, with two different perspectives.
Stallman is one of the early hackers. The hacker culture in the 1960s was a community developed and composed of enthusiast computer programmers and system designers. Therefore, is not to be thought with the negative connotation of hackers and issues about privacy we have today.
In 1976 the US Copyright Act was released for which software started to be protected and licensed under copyright laws.
In 1983, Stallman launches the GNU Project – a free software system, which principles were based on the conception of freedom. “… free software is a matter of freedom, not price”. Software should be freed, but along the lines of freedom of speech. Following this path, in 1985 Stallman created the Free Software Foundation in order to enable users to access the source code, use and redistribute the program, modify, improve it and give it back to the community.
In response to these principles of users’ rights, in 1989 he created the General Public License (GPL). It is a copyleft license for which work can only be distributed only under the same license terms. This condition would prevent people from taking something from the public domain and exploit it.
In his essay Stallman, in his radical perspective, emphasizes the importance of freedom linked to software, and why software shouldn’t be under copyright with major points:
• Name calling: Owners create a vocabulary that compares physical domain and the damage of the digital domain – the use of words like “piracy” or “theft” that cannot belong to the digital domain.
• Exaggeration: Owners incorrectly say that they suffer “economic loss” when users copy programs themselves, yet the copying doesn’t affect the owner.
• The law: Owners describe the current state of laws, but laws don’t decide right and wrong.
• Natural rights: Authors claim a special connection with the programs they created, and their interests and desires outweigh those of anyone else, but the assumption that the authors is more important than users is wrong.
• Economics: Owners of software leads to production of more software, which is a legitimate approach; however, this is not what society needs. What society needs is information that is truly available to its citizens.
Lessing, with a moderate perspective, explores copyright acknowledging that it needs an update. The author points the distinction between the culture of the 20th century and the culture of the 21st century:
• the culture of the 20th century can be defined as a read/only culture – a metaphor to express the kind of culture of that period in which creativity is only consumed. There is no possibility to create content for that industry and it was a matter of being privileged and professional.
• the culture of the 21st century can be defined as a read/write culture in which users became also content creators. This metaphor refers to a massive social change where the users become consumer and producer.
The need for a new economy:
• Sharing economy and commercial economy can coexist becoming a hybrid economy that shares the characteristics of both.
• both amateurs and professionals need to be involved.
Lessig proposes a copyright reform to navigate the digital domain with two solutions:
• distinguish between copies and remixes with the context, which will help to distinguish between the professional and the amateur. In this way, professionals can control copies of their work available commercially, and amateurs can remix work with free use.
• stop suing kids for peer-to-peer piracy and start suing for peace. Making a war is ineffective, therefore, there is the need to compromise.

P1 - Mockup
Attempt
My main goal is to create a unique package for earbuds that will make people want to keep it. The package also needs to use as little materials as possible, all of which are eco-friendly.
Process
I began sketching various shape concepts that would create interest and reduce wasteful packaging. I chose to go with a package that would resemble the shape of an earbud. This involved many simple ideas by cutting regular paper and taping pieces together.
Outcome
My final choice was based on the basic forms of ordinary shapes with adjustments. The main half is a horizontal rectangle with an earbud shape covering 1/3 of the end. The box extends into the lid so the package and hold together. The lid was inspired by a dome-shaped package, which takes on a slightly different shape. The lid has a box a bit larger than the box that extends from the body, nestled inside the end.
Discovery
The begging 3-D concepts were difficult when I tried to make the literal shape from cutting shapes. Looking at other simple forms with similar forms helped simplify my base. From here, it was easier to come up with realistic possibilities in which the package could open with ease. This also allowed for pushing conceptual design, such as the ear perceived detaching.

An Epic Poem by Homer of Greece 🇬🇷 In Homer's epic poem "Iliad and The Odyssey," the main character Odysseus is rescued by the Greek gods from his imprisonment after the fall of Troy and embarks on a treacherous journey to return to his homeland. During the journey, he faces many obstacles that challenge his faith and loyalty. The poem explores several virtues and moral values that eventually lead to Odysseus's successful return. Loyalty. Perseverance and Compassion. This are three of the most important values and message of the epic poem Iliad and the Odyssey. A central virtuous theme in this epic poem is loyalty. Odysseus's devotion to his family, his country and his god is unwavering. Along his journey, Odysseus has the opportunity to be unfaithful to his wife, renounce his country and ignore his beliefs. Even though he sometimes falters and some of his decisions have negative consequences, his allegiance, love for his wife and desire to return home never wanes. Iliad and The Odyssey is a story of perseverance. Despite the many obstacles and challenges he faces, Odysseus never gives up. Even when Odysseus doesn't know how to escape the cyclops, he makes a noble attempt to survive by riding under the bellies of sheep. Odysseus's perseverance isn't based on physical strength alone. He uses his intelligence to outwit those who try to ensnare him. From the very beginning of the poem, Odysseus shows his determination by escaping the grips of Calypso. Even though Odysseus is forced to deal with opposing forces using violence and aggression, he never loses his soft side. He proves his virtue when he allows compassion to rule his heart. Odysseus remembers his fellow comrades who died in war and mourns their loss. His imprisonment, years away from home and oppressive confrontations aren't able to destroy his empathetic and compassionate tendencies. 💡During the Poetry festival activity I learned that every person has its own way on how to convey whatever they want to say and share to others. Everybody can share their thoughts and feelings, convey a message or even tell a story through the use of a poem using different language and different emotions. Some poems are meant to inspire others, some are happy, some are sad and some can even break your heart. On that day, I've heard 5 poems from different countries and also heard the message it wants to convey. But what I really learned is that poetry can change our perceptions in life maybe not today but in the future to come.

0.3 The Smaller the Better?
Give some food to your ears with Playlist 0.3 Knitting.
My knitting process keeps on getting smaller, nonetheless, I do see a big progress in my skills. As you can see on the first photo I usually knit in front of my studying desk at home. Whenever, I take breaks from studying or doing assignments. It also, gives me a break from scrolling down from social media, especially, my Instagram feed. I always lose a great amount of time on it.
I enjoyed watching my cotton yarn getting smaller and smaller. I learned that having a tight knit is important but not too tight. I had to find a right balance.

The Rabbit and the Tar Wolf--A Cherokee Fairy Tale!
This Cherokee story begins with the setting: a forest with numerous animals living in it. After a severe drought, the animals hold council dig a well. The rabbit states it does not need a well because it only needs the morning dew and thus does not need a well. However, the rabbit sneaks into the well at night and steals water from it. The other animals set up a decoy wolf covered in tar, the rabbit attacks the sticky wolf and becomes stuck one night. The animals then banish from the forest but the rabbit states it would have left anyway.
The Cherokee people are a Native American Tribe who hail from the southeastern United States. They have a unique cultural history as the first of humanity to live in the area. Through the tradition of oral storytelling, many legends have circulated through this American tribe. As in stories from western cultures, they contain a lesson or moral to be learned--and feature animals as protagonist. One of these stories is “The Rabbit and the Tar Wolf”. In classic fairy-tale fashion, the rabbit is a sly and pompous character who thinks the other animals stupid. The rabbit is fooled itself and has to suffer the consequences of its actions. In a turn of events, the rabbit escapes and survives.
This story of the Cherokee serves as a cautionary tail about loners within a group. Those who would rather keep to themselves are meant to be by themselves. For a tribal society like the Cherokee, community was vital for survival. One had to depend on others to thrive in a tribal society; and if a loner is stealing resources, they should be driven to be alone again. There is a commonality between two cultures within this story as well. “The Tortoise and the Hare”. By having the rabbit character be quick witted and posh, there can be a conclusion made that rabbits and other animals are viewed similarly by humans across cultures. I loved learning this Cherokee tribal tale and earned a bundle of knowledge about this great people.

Plane crash mystery: Michigan student vanishes without a trace
Last week, a mysterious plane crash occurred involving a University of Michigan graduate. According to local reports, there was no trace of life at the scene-no footprints or bodies. The plane was found in Ontario, Canada about 400 miles from its original destination (Harbor Springs, MI). The police inform readers that the Cessna 172 was rented in Ann Arbor, MI and registered with the University of Michigan Flyers Inc. Police were very confused due no footprints in the snow, and the pilot was not discovered. The investigation will remain ongoing with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, and the University of Michigan police.
This article is very upsetting, I chose this article because it really hit close to home. We keep hearing about things that are happening elsewhere in the world, and some seem to be losing focus about what is going on right where we live. The student that is reported a missing person at this time is from our home state. I’m not sure if I agree entirely with what is being said. I just think the whole thing is very fishy because a plane recently crashed in Australia. I wonder if there are any ties to the two? This story leaves me with a very uneasy feeling, and a lot of questions. Hearing this upsetting news really makes you appreciate your life, and inspires you to live each day like it’s your last. I will definitely be checking back on this story to see how the investigation goes, and if the student is ever found.

Blog Post 6: Know ya Lemons!
Public Campaigs and Communities
The benefits of the internet have been greatly discussed in this unit. Through topics such as activism and crowdsourcing we can see the amazing things that can be achieved via social media. Another topic that falls under the altruistic nature is ‘Public Health Campaigns and Communities’. Public health campaigns are the process of ‘identifying a threat to health’ and then ‘doing something about it’ (Australian Medicine, 2014). These campaigns can come in many different forms and utilise social media platforms to spread the word.
Public health campaigns have existed long before the internet but arguably have become easier to spread the word through the internet.
Public Health Campaign Poster from the 1980’s for AIDS:
How well do you know your lemons?
In terms of successful campaigns run through social media, I really liked the ‘Know you Lemons’ campaign run by ‘Worldwide Breast Cancer’ non for profit charity. As a woman with breasts and having known people effected by the disease I think it is an excellent and interesting campaign.
The charity was created in 2014 by Corrine Ellsworth Beaumont PhD with ‘Know your Lemons’ being one of their most successful campaigns. It aims to raise awareness about breast cancer and exemplify signs that your breast may be showing signs of the disease.
Some of the facts (Know your lemons, 2016):
- Only 4% of women know the signs of breast cancer
- When breast cancer is found in an early detection test, the chance of survival is at nearly 100%
- When found in its latest stage there is no survival
- People do not talk about breasts as discussion can seem inappropriate
When the campaign launched, the image above spread like ‘wildfire’ across all social media platforms (Howard, 2018). Since the creation of the charity, the organisation has educated nearly 500 million people and has translated its campaign into 20 different languages (Know your Lemons, 2016).
I believe this is an excellent campaign as it has excellent visual representation of what abnormalities look like. It is displayed in a non-sexual nature and is easy to understand regardless of what language you speak or what culture you are a part of. Breast cancer is a very scary disease and as women, we need to be aware and vigilant.
