Child-Safe Blinds In Calgary: What Every Parent Needs To Know!
Tumblr media
Window treatment, often overlooked, can be tricky. As parents, we always put our children's safety, as the top priority. From tangling to choking, the risks are serious.
But don’t worry – We secure our homes in many ways, but some dangers escape our notice. One hidden risk is window blinds. This article explores why child-safe blinds in Calgary matter and the options to keep kids safe.
Why Child-Safe Blinds In Calgary And Shades Matter?
Children possess an insatiable curiosity, driving them to explore and decipher the world around them. As Walt Disney said, "Curiosity leads to discovery." This is why prioritizing child safety for blinds and shades is crucial. You've likely found them experimenting with whatever they can handle. Those dangling cords are irresistible to young, inquisitive minds.
While your little ones may innocently experiment with these cords, they risk serious or even fatal entanglement. But fret not, accidents are preventable. With proper installation tips and tricks for child-safe blinds in Calgary and shades, you create a secure environment for play, granting you peace of mind.
a). Preventing Accidental Strangulation
Shield your kids from danger by ditching corded blinds and opting for cordless or inaccessible options, saving them from potential harm or worse.
b). Steer Clear Of Choking Hazards
Ensure your little ones stay safe by choosing top-notch blinds that meet rigorous safety standards, eliminating any risk of small parts breaking off and becoming a choking hazard.
c). Boost Overall Home Safety
Upgrade your home's safety game by not overlooking the importance of secure blinds, completing the puzzle of child-proofing with other essentials like furniture anchors, baby gates, and corner protectors for total peace of mind.
Choosing The Right Child-Safe Blinds In Calgary
1). Cordless Blinds
What they are: Cordless blinds and shades operate efficiently with a simple push or pull. When it's about keeping your kids safe, there's no twist room. You might warn them to steer clear of cords, but what if they don't heed your words? And let's face it, they sometimes don't, right? You could tie those cords up and tuck them out of reach, but what if they slip down or your little ones find a way up?
No parent wants to imagine the consequences of an accident, but with cords, the risks are all too real. Cordless child-safe blinds and shades kick that fear to the curb. They're the absolute safest choice. Slide your window coverings into place, and they stay put, with no fuss.
Benefits
Safety First: Cordless Means Tangle-Free
Ease of Use: Many find cordless blinds easier to adjust.
Aesthetic: A cleaner, streamlined look without dangling cords.
2). Motorized Blinds
For utmost safety, use cordless blinds and shades in homes with children. Without cords, there’s no risk. Motorization shades remove cords and add convenience. Adjust your window coverings with one tap on your remote or device.
It’s that simple! Save your favourite settings and have your blinds and shades adjust automatically. It’s like a dream come true! Parents can have one less worry. With motorization, you won’t need to think about your blinds and shades. Your kids will be safe, free from hidden dangers at the windows.
Benefits
Ultimate Safety: Eliminates any cord-related risks.
Convenience: Adjust blinds with a touch of a button or even a voice command.
Integration: This can be incorporated into smart home systems.
3). Blinds With Hidden Cords
Sometimes, your home's layout makes cordless options impractical. What then? If cords are necessary, ensure they're safe. Hunter Douglas provides “safe cord” solutions to protect your family. One option is a cord tensioner. It secures the cord to the window frame. With nothing dangling, curious hands stay safe.
Another solution is a retractable cord. A short cord hangs at the top of the window. It retracts automatically after adjustments. This keeps the cord out of reach. Lastly, consider a corded wand. It anchors the cord to a wand for easy and safe adjustments. When motorized or cordless systems aren’t viable, these options keep cords safe and secure.
Benefits
Reduced Risk: Minimizes the chances of a child accessing the cord.
Sleek Design: Offers the safety of cordless blinds with the traditional functionality of corded ones.

A Comprehensive Guide to Choosing Between Cellular Shades and Blinds in Calgary
Tumblr media
hen it comes to enhancing the aesthetics and functionality of your home, window coverings play a crucial role. Whether you're looking for privacy, light control, or insulation, cellular shades and blinds are popular options that offer a range of benefits. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the differences between cellular shades and blinds, explore their respective benefits, consider the factors to ponder when choosing between the two, and provide expert tips on measuring, installing, and maintaining these window coverings.
Understanding the Differences
Cellular shades, also known as honeycomb shades, are constructed with a unique honeycomb design that creates air pockets, providing excellent insulation and energy efficiency. These shades come in various light-filtering and room-darkening options, offering versatility in light control. On the other hand, blinds consist of horizontal or vertical slats that can be adjusted to control light and privacy. They are available in a variety of materials such as wood, faux wood, aluminum, and vinyl, catering to different styles and preferences.
Benefits of Cellular Shades in Calgary
In the climate of Calgary, where temperatures can fluctuate drastically, cellular shades offer exceptional insulation, helping to keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The insulating properties of cellular shades can contribute to energy savings by reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling. Additionally, they are effective at minimizing outside noise, creating a peaceful indoor environment.
Benefits of Blinds in Calgary
Blinds are a popular choice in Calgary due to their versatility and durability. They provide excellent light control, allowing you to regulate the amount of natural light entering your space. This is particularly beneficial during the long summer days in Calgary when the sunlight can be intense. Blinds also offer a timeless aesthetic appeal and are easy to clean and maintain, making them a practical choice for busy homeowners.
Factors to Consider When Choosing Between Cellular Shades and Blinds
When deciding between cellular shades and blinds, several factors should be considered. These include your specific light and privacy needs, the architectural style of your home, and your budget. Additionally, consider the orientation of your windows and the climate in Calgary to determine the level of insulation and light control required.
How to Measure and Install Cellular Shades
Accurate measurements are crucial for ensuring a proper fit and function of cellular shades. Measure the width and height of the window recess and consider whether you want an inside or outside mount. Installation of cellular shades typically involves attaching mounting brackets and securing the shades in place. For precise installation, following the manufacturer's instructions is essential.
How to Measure and Install Blinds
Similar to cellular shades, measuring your windows accurately is essential when installing blinds. Whether you opt for an inside or outside mount, taking precise measurements will ensure a seamless fit. The installation process involves securing the brackets, hanging the blinds, and testing their operation. If you're unsure, seeking professional installation services can guarantee a flawless result.
Maintenance and Cleaning Tips for Cellular Shades and Blinds
To maintain the pristine condition and functionality of your window coverings, regular cleaning is essential. For cellular shades, gentle dusting or vacuuming with a brush attachment is recommended. Blinds can be cleaned with a microfiber cloth or gentle duster, and for more thorough cleaning, they can be wiped down with a mild cleaning solution. Always refer to the manufacturer's guidelines for specific cleaning instructions.
Conclusion: Making the Best Choice for Your Home
Choosing between cellular shades and blinds in Calgary ultimately boils down to your specific requirements and preferences. Whether you prioritize energy efficiency, light control, or aesthetic appeal, both window coverings offer distinct advantages. By considering the factors outlined in this guide and exploring the diverse options available, you can make an informed decision that enhances the comfort and style of your home.
In conclusion, cellular shades and blinds are indispensable elements of home decor that offer practical benefits and aesthetic appeal. With the right knowledge and considerations, you can select the perfect window coverings to elevate your living spaces in Calgary.
Whether you opt for the superior insulation of cellular shades or the timeless charm of blinds, your choice will undoubtedly contribute to a more comfortable and visually appealing home environment.

Forklift Safety Operation Tips to Avoid Accidents
Tumblr media
Forklifts play a crucial role in various industries, assisting in the movement of heavy loads and improving operational efficiency. However, due to their size, power, and potential hazards, forklift operation requires strict adherence to safety protocols. To prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of operators and those working around them, it is essential to follow established forklift rules and regulations. This blog post aims to provide valuable tips for forklift safety operation, emphasizing the importance of proper training and certification, and discussing essential guidelines to minimize the risk of accidents.
Obtain Proper Training and Certification:
Before operating a forklift, it is crucial to receive comprehensive training and obtain the necessary certifications. Organizations should invest in forklift courses provided by reputable training centers, such as a Forklift course in Calgary. These courses cover crucial topics such as safe operation techniques, load handling, maneuvering, and general maintenance, ensuring operators have the knowledge and skills required to operate forklifts safely and effectively.
2. Conduct Pre-Operational Inspections:
Performing pre-operational inspections is a vital step to identify any potential issues or malfunctions with the forklift. Before starting the machine, operators should check for signs of damage, leaks, tire conditions, and proper functioning of all controls. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs are essential to keep the forklift in optimal working condition, reducing the risk of accidents caused by mechanical failures.
3. Wear Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
Operators should always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while operating a forklift. This includes a hard hat, high-visibility clothing, safety shoes, and gloves. PPE helps protect against head injuries, enhances visibility for other workers, and provides protection from potential hazards.
4. Follow Speed Limits and Maintain Safe Distances:
Adhering to speed limits is crucial for maintaining control and stability while operating a forklift. Operators should drive at a safe speed, considering the load, the terrain, and the conditions of the work environment. It is equally important to maintain a safe distance from other forklifts, pedestrians, and obstacles to prevent collisions.
5. Proper Load Handling and Positioning:
Proper load handling techniques are essential for maintaining stability and preventing accidents. Operators should ensure that the load is within the forklift's capacity and perfectly balanced. When lifting or lowering loads, they should follow the manufacturer's guidelines and avoid sudden movements that could lead to instability. Additionally, loads should be positioned low to the ground and tilted slightly backward for improved stability during travel.
6. Use Caution While Maneuvering:
Forklift operators should exercise caution when maneuvering the equipment, especially during turns and while reversing. They should use horn signals to alert pedestrians and other forklift operators of their presence. When turning, operators should make wide, slow turns, and avoid sharp movements that can cause tip-overs.
7. Observe Clear Visibility and Lighting:
Maintaining clear visibility is crucial for safe forklift operation. Operators should keep the forklift windows clean and ensure that mirrors are properly adjusted to eliminate blind spots. When working in poorly lit areas, operators should use proper lighting equipment, such as headlights and warning lights, to enhance visibility and make their presence known to others.
8. Be Mindful of Pedestrians:
One of the most critical aspects of forklift safety is being aware of pedestrians in the work area. Operators should always be alert and cautious when driving a forklift, keeping an eye out for pedestrians, and giving them the right of way. It is crucial to establish clear pedestrian walkways and use barriers or signage to separate pedestrian areas from forklift traffic zones.
9. Never Overload the Forklift:
Overloading a forklift can lead to stability issues and increase the risk of accidents. Operators should be familiar with the forklift's load capacity and strictly adhere to it. When lifting a load, ensure that it is properly secured, evenly distributed, and within the recommended weight limits. Overloading a forklift not only compromises its stability but also puts excessive strain on the machine, leading to potential breakdowns and damage.
10. Avoid Distracted Driving:
Just like operating any other vehicle, forklift operators should refrain from distracted driving. This means avoiding the use of mobile phones, eating, drinking, or any activity that diverts attention from operating the forklift. Maintaining focus and concentration is essential for safe and efficient forklift operation.
11. Use the Forklift's Safety Features:
Forklifts are equipped with various safety features designed to prevent accidents. Operators should familiarize themselves with these features and utilize them accordingly. These may include seat belts, parking brakes, horns, lights, and backup alarms. Ensuring that these safety features are in proper working condition and using them consistently can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.
12. Communicate and Follow Signals:
Clear communication is vital in a workplace where forklifts are in operation. Operators should use hand signals or audible warnings to communicate with pedestrians and other forklift operators. Establishing a communication system, such as walkie-talkies or two-way radios, can also enhance coordination and safety in larger work environments.
13. Report and Address Hazards:
If operators notice any hazards, such as damaged flooring, obstructions, or spills, they should report them immediately to supervisors or relevant personnel. Timely reporting and prompt action help prevent accidents and create a safer work environment for everyone.
14. Continuous Training and Evaluation:
Safety training should not be a one-time event but an ongoing process. Employers should provide regular refresher training sessions for forklift operators to reinforce safe practices and address any emerging issues. It is also crucial to evaluate operator performance periodically to identify areas for improvement and provide additional training if necessary.
15. Promote a Culture of Safety:
Creating a culture of safety is essential for the overall well-being of the workplace. Employers should encourage open communication, where employees feel comfortable reporting safety concerns or suggesting improvements. Recognizing and rewarding safe behaviors and actively addressing safety issues contribute to a positive safety culture and help prevent accidents.
Conclusion:
Forklift safety should be a top priority for every organization utilizing these powerful machines. By following forklift rules and regulations, investing in proper training, and implementing the tips outlined in this blog post, accidents and injuries can be significantly reduced. Remember, a well-trained and vigilant forklift operator is essential for maintaining a safe work environment and protecting the well-being of everyone involved.
So, whether you are an operator or an employer, prioritize forklift safety, and consider enrolling in a reputable forklift course such as a Forklift course in Calgary to ensure that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to operate these machines safely and efficiently. Stay safe!

2017 Songs of My Year
2017 was traumatic for everyone, wasn’t it? And I was no exception. I learned a lot about myself in 2017, formed new relationships and suffered some collateral damage along the way.
In a way, this list is more personal than the years since I started this tradition in 2010, maybe in part because 2017 cut me deeper than a lot of years I’ve had. The highs were high, the lows were real low, and the learning curve was steep indeed.
Tumblr media
January
Frankie Knuckles, I’ll Take You There (ft. Jamie Principle)
The night of January 1, 2017, I sat in a loose state of undress on my living room floor, high and over-warm, in a state of mounting, spiraling dread. We listened to a Frankie Knuckles Boiler Room on Youtube and I struggled to find to words to explain that, eleven days after tying the knot, I knew something was very wrong and I didn’t know how to put it right. I missed my family at the ceremony. I missed the ocean. I missed feeling healthy and vital; the disease in my gut and the medication for it was already starting to exact a brutal toll on me. I missed not feeling afraid. Trump was about to be inaugurated. Christmas vacation was already over and the post-holiday and party slump was hitting me hard. The only thing that soothed me in those late hours were the synesthetic sunshine yellow chords from Frankie Knuckles promising that maybe it wasn’t as bad as I feared.
February
Just Us, Cloudbusting
February was a slight upturn with only patches of stomach churning horror and my mind turned to future training and projects as I took on new challenges at work and tried to ignore the continued dread that seeped into the edges of my life. The best thing about February was undoubtedly taking a trip to Edmonton to see one of my best friends, Eric. A dark mood hung over me that I couldn’t disguise but this old and faithful cover of one of my favorite Kate Bush songs buoyed me during the schlep from Saskatoon to Edmonton. Like the sun coming out, I just know that something good is going to happen echoes the audacious, sparkling optimism of the Frankie Knuckles track above. Despite the reality that it wasn’t *just us* I sang along to this song like a mantra. Just us, just us. Bust those clouds open and let in the sun.
March
Goldfrapp, Ocean
I opened the month by drunkenly having sex with someone I shouldn’t while I was blacked out and the self-sabotage only continued. I learned I was capable of twisting myself in knots to belong, just like I’d done as a little girl and later a teenager. Don’t leave me behind. Take me with you. Once a passenger, always a passenger. As I fell for someone who never cared for me, I found myself unable to sleep, in a constant state of panic and dread, waiting for a confrontation I knew would never come, all the while terrified I would be quietly edged out of my own life, replaced by someone who didn’t even want my life. The intensity I felt was misdirected at the woman who became the object of my fascination, not because of anything about her but because of the lengths I’d go to participate in my own life as it went further off the rails. No boundaries. Let your love consume you and burn you to the wick.
Goldfrapp’s “Ocean” reminds me of both the woman and myself; I’m the titular ocean, vast and mercurial and she’s the narrator of the song, the people collector, the one who wouldn’t lie. But of course she would.
April
Yaeji, Passionfruit
April was more tranquil, for me at least. I’ve learned I overcome pain and humiliation quickly, and that’s a blessing at least. This tranquil remix of Drake’s Passionfruit played a lot during the month of April, with it’s cold lyrical indictments, muted vocals, deep, ebbing beats, all delivered in distant, minimal space. It echoed my emotions well. Numb, healing, detached. I still hadn’t felt the return of my sense of safety, the seismic sense that my love life and my health could change at any moment would stay with me for months to come.
May
Joe Goddard, Music is the Answer
By May I had enough distance from the misery of March and April that I could catch my breath. My world had shrunk over the past few years and I felt a powerful need to expand it, to connect with people outside my small circle, with the hopes of establishes more people in my life who wouldn’t take my energy and warmth for granted, people who wouldn’t be compelled to compare me unfavorably to my partner. I was missing the kind of intimacy that comes from having someone in your life beyond your partner, people who care deeply about you and is warm and caring and intimate. May was a month of burgeoning connections and false starts, like a false spring, but a spring nonetheless. Joe Goddard’s video heightens the track, the lost war satellite in search of its target, not unlike my nascent forays into finding a connection to someone far, far away.
June
Kaityn Aurelia Smith, An Intention
In June we went to Calgary to visit one of my best friends, Alan, and managed to see Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith at Studio Bell, a cavernous and breathtaking cathedral of music in Calgary’s East Village. KAS stood in front of us with her analogue synth and her trippy light show and for the length of her show I was suspended in this psychedelic pastoral wetland, all shimmering tadpoles and dividing cells. I came away from the experience euphoric, feeling like I’d transcended something immense, learned important secrets of creation.
July
Brandon Flowers, Never Get You Right
I revisited this song when I was feel particularly alone as my attempts to connect to different people around me crumbled before me and I heard some bad reviews of my behavior through the grapevine. Was it worth it, trying to be known and understood? Is that all I wanted? Or was I asking for too much? Was there anyone I could connect with enough that I trusted their review or was I really at sea? They’ll turn you into something whether you are it or not. Yes of course, a worthwhile reminder that this misunderstanding, this feeling of being unknowable and isolated isn’t particular to me but instead a universal.
August
Carly Rae Jepson, Cut to the Feeling
August long weekend started with one of my best friends Chris coming to Saskatoon. We had an amazing time, the highlight of which was Brock’s DJ set at Pink. CRJ reminds me of Chris and when Brock played this song, the room lit up and I had the rare and glorious feeling that I was in exactly the right place at exactly the right time.
September
Galantic - Hey Alligator
It’s sugary and gay and over the top as all Galantis is want to be but this song soundtracked the last of lonely Saturday nights at home, flitting about the kitchen cooking or chatting up veritable strangers on the internet, which was not ultimately a particularly gay activity but this track makes me feel like the last word in gay. Some of the relationships I’d formed online at that time had started to go septic and I started wondering what it was about me that lead me to seek out such unsatisfying and ultimately destructive connections. My introspection started with this song and continued over the coming months.
October
Shura, White Light
If I had a single song that spoke to my personal process and internal conflict this year, it was this one. Morgan put me on to it, indeed put it on me, and I became addicted to it, playing it literally dozens of times and in every mood. Shura’s sweet, breathy voice purrs intimately on the track while electropop burbles around her. Her lyrics speak to a blinding intensity, a seductive and almost alien nature or for my purposes a fictive personality manufactured to elicit validation but ultimately flimsy. But at the same time I felt like a part of me that had never been properly seen was given space to flourish. Intense and intimate, this aspect of myself could give with abandon because the people I was giving to were many miles away, sometimes on different continents, a safe distance for my heart and body and real life, practically in space. You're from another planet/And I'd like you to take me there/You can fly your alien spaceship
November
Miguel, Told You So
November swam by so quickly. In the first couple weeks Eric came to visit completely by surprise and we had the most ideal, chill time and I’ve been craving it ever since.
Miguel’s War and Leisure is without a doubt one of my favorite albums of the year and Told You So was my favorite track. The song is pure romance, sunlight, promises of fantasy and romance and escape and yet we from Miguel that the video for this track is a protest video, shot in the desert, missiles falling in the sky just as others launch. There’s an air of dread and voyeurism to the video, meant to refer to the political world in the Trump era but it felt true of my life too. Did I really understand all the changes I’d undergone in 2017? For good and for ill? The practice I’d had setting boundaries but also the increasing social anxiety? The strain that living more truthfully had put on my closest relationships?
December
Sasha ft. Poliça, Out of Time
I don’t usually have much to say to trance as a musical genre but this track is a common thread throughout my 2017. Brock played this track to great appreciation at the rainy and isolated little Solstice Festival back in June and reprised it, mostly for me, at a miserable, failing Saskatoon club called Eclipse in the first week of December.
This track is airy, cavernous, with juicy, acidy beats throughout and Channy Leaneagh’s throaty, disembodied voice haunting the track. Yes, we are out of time. Out of time for Christmas. Out of time to change, to do better in 2017. Time moves so much faster than I handle and it scares me.
Song of the Year:
The 1975, Somebody Else
I’ve listened to this song with all my friends, Brock and Morgan most of all. Definitely most played in 2017.
Ignore if you want the three minute Lynchian introduction that carries on from where Change of Heart leaves off, but I can’t. Twin Peaks was a part of my year and the Lynch references with the doppelgangers and rabbits on the wall were impossible to ignore. Matty Healy splits himself into twos, threes, fours, and more as he mourns what he’s lost and revels in self-pity, excess and self-destruction. It all seems terribly familiar.
In the video for this track, Matty Healy wanders through the ugly concrete cityscape that I think is Manchester, surrounded by green-blue twilight, neon lights, reflective surfaces and gathering storms. He undersings all but the bridges, were his gently screwed and chopped voice hits registers beyond his range, translating on the track to keen and visceral pining interspersed with chilly ambivalence--my entire process of untangling my mind, my desires from someone else’s.
Over the course of the song I lose track of Matty Healy’s gender and orientation, mostly because he invites it, but in that moment it’s easy for me to assume his perspective--something I usually find impossible in bands with guitars fronted by men. In that moment I’m thinking about who I am with and without love in my life, how I choose to define myself in and outside of relationships and my role in shaping them. This year has seen huge growth and painful realizations for my heart and head but the way forward is through.

Day 14
Our last day before the travel home begins.
Survived the night in the Dobby room. Once in there we discovered the added attraction of a metre long air vent that noisily blasted air down onto the bed with the added attraction of hearing every toilet flush above us. In the meantime the Fussells were having first world problems around the light creeping into their room through the the windows with the panoramic views. If only the servants had come in and lowered the blinds. Sigh!
Went down to one of the local cafes on the riverfront for breakfast which has a coffee house, a bakery and a bar all ensconced in an old brick building that used to house a mattress manufacturer. Great building and atmosphere with good coffee and food.
Walked from there along the waterfront to Fort Calgary. A bit of a disappointment. All they have is the outline of the fort and no real photos of what it looked like. The recreated Police Barracks were there but once again hohum. Went to walk to the zoo but it started to rain so flagged that and decided to go to a Cabelas store that Pete had his eye on before we left NZ. Pete gets the catalogue from this outdoor/hunting/camping store and drools over it as well as making the occasional sneaky online purchase. Drove out there to discover a store the size of Bunnings. Sensory overload for Pete with Shazza having to guide him around the store to ensure that his obvious excitement didn’t knock anything off the shelves.
Pete had told Shazza and Megan that this store was part of a mall and that there would be shops that they would be interested in. Believe it or not the Fussell nose grew even bigger🤥. The shopping twins were not to be so easily duped and pinned one of the shop assistants to the wall until he spilled the beans on where the outlet stores were. Nec minute we found ourselves driving to Cross Iron Mall. Got there and walked into the food court which I would adjudged to be the size of the square in front of Christchurch Cathedral. The mall itself would have been the equivalent of Chechen retail centre but all indoors and approx 300 shops and many were large retail areas.
Pete found another Cabelas ther which was bigger than the last one and I suspect that they killed a whole forest of creatures to supply there diaramas which had running water and live fish in them. Megan and Shazza found some bargains and Pete managed to spend a dollar or two. Nothing I needed so a cheap round for me. Went to a complete Guiness Bar inside the mall which was probably larger than most of the bars in Christchurch and had a late lunch. Actually served by an Irish lass so a bit more realistic.
Back to the unit and started packing for tomorrow’s early departure. Off down to the Char Bar for dinner.it is based in the same old Mattress Factory building. They had some excellent aged steaks that you had to share due to their size accompanied by tasty sauces. Nice wine, tasty deserts and topped off with a tasty port. Went to wander home only to be confronted by a downpour and a dash to our apartment which is thankfully close. A bit of poetic licence there because what actually happened was we waddled back to the apartment due to the food babies we were each carrying.
Back in the apartment and time for a bit of spiritual reflection

They are normally produced using man-made strands like nylon, polyester, or polypropylene.
Brace blinds have thicker cuts produced using woven textures. The expense is higher than the other assortment yet the expense is great for the additional polish and class that these textures bring to a room. Skylights Installation Guide for Calgary AB DIY Homeowners
Having an excellent thumb for DIY work is a laudable characteristic. However, DIY is never easy especially if you're planning a skylights installation. These windows are heavy yet extremely fragile -- an error in handling or installation will shorten its lifespan and performance. However, install them perfectly, and you'll end up with a naturally-lit home with excellent brightness.
Excited to get started? Home Tips has excellent instruction moving forward with skylights installation procedures. Read all about it below.
How to Install a Skylight
In This Article:
Planning Skylight Installation
Installation Supplies
Step-by-Step Skylight Installation
youtube
A window on the roof lets in significantly more light than a vertical window, so even a small skylight can make a room feel larger and airier.
When planning a skylight installation, be sure to take into consideration the sun’s path. Skylights on the south- or west-facing portion of the roof will collect direct sun—skylights facing north or east may not get any direct sunlight.
Any skylight that receives direct sunlight is bound to become a heat trap on hot days. So, if you intend to install a skylight facing south or west, be sure you plan ways to control heat gain. Some manufacturers sell remote-controlled shades or Venetian blinds for their skylights—opting for these would be one way to minimize the problem. Another is to choose a ventilating skylight that can be opened to allow hot air to escape. For more, see Skylights Buying Guide and Skylight Blinds & Shades.
Keep in mind one important fact: If you want to install a skylight in a room that has an attic above, you’ll need to build a light shaft.
Types of Light Shafts
Framing for a light shaft that will funnel light from the roof to the room below is built in this attic. When the framing is finished, drywall will be added.
Framing for a light shaft that will funnel light from the roof to the room below is built in this attic. Now that the framing is finished, drywall is being added to the interior side of the light shaft.
The shape of a light shaft controls the spread of the natural light beam. A shaft that’s flared on all four sides spreads light over the widest area; a perpendicular shaft with vertical sides focuses the light straight below. A shaft flared on only one or two sides sends more light in the direction of the flared sides.
Planning Skylight Installation
Be sure any skylight you intend to install will meet local codes for load, wind resistance, and related factors. Building permits are required for installation in most regions.
Sizing and placing a roof window in an attic room so that it captures a view calls for careful planning. The roof’s slope will affect proper placement. A low-sloping roof will require a taller window than a steeper roof for the same amount of view. Manufacturers of roof windows have charts that list recommendations based on the slope of the roof.
Installation Supplies (Read Full Post Here)
True enough, even veteran skylights installation professionals in Calgary AB know that skylights aren't exactly the easiest materials to handle. In fact, even professionals commit errors that ultimately affect the lifespan and durability of these materials. Luckily, you can avoid these problems because Trusted Pros has a good checklist to keep it in check -- read more about it here.
Errors to Avoid when Dealing with Skylights
Skylights are one of the most beautiful and useful elements you can add to a home. Not only do they provide light and thereby cut down on utility bills, but they lend a lighter feel to areas of your home that would otherwise feel heavier and darker.
Adding a skylight is one of the most popular home improvement projects out there. The variety of skylights amazes most homeowners, and the benefits are also a wonderful surprise. However, like any other home improvement project, a skylight installation project can go wrong in several different ways. In addition, skylight maintenance mistakes can turn these small windows into small disasters.
Thankfully, avoiding these mistakes is easy, whether you're tackling this project on a DIY basis or simply performing routine maintenance. Here, we'll review the most commonly made skylight mistakes. We'll cover mistakes made by homeowners and professionals alike, so you can be aware of potential errors and alert your contractor if you see them being made.
Poor Placement Choices
One of the biggest initial mistakes made during the skylight installation process is choosing a location which simply can't accommodate a skylight. Often, homeowners only look at the interior of their home when making this decision. Perhaps there's a long, dark hall in your home that would look great with the addition of some natural sunlight. This sounds like a great location for a skylight, but what's above the ceiling?
It's essential to check your home's structure before making any final plans. Before you fall in love with the idea of a skylight in a particular area, check to ensure that there are no pipes or wires running directly above it which could interfere with installation. You don't want to be changing things like plumbing and electrical work simply to accommodate a skylight. It's possible in some cases, but it usually turns out to be far more trouble than its worth.
Ideally, you should get up in your attic and scout potential locations from a different perspective. A simple map will allow you to make notes of good, clear areas to put a skylight. Then, you can take your map downstairs and see which of these areas you like best. This avoids the mistake of falling in love with the idea of a skylight in a certain area, only to learn (often after hiring pros and purchasing materials) that it simply can't be done.
There is a specific type of skylight which is related to this issue. Many homeowners mistakenly think that an attic prevents the installation of skylights. This is untrue! Skylights can be cut into the attic ceiling and attached to tubes or shafts which direct the light down into your living space. Be sure to explore these options with a contractor before making a final decision.
Installing a Skylight in a Damaged Roof (Read Full Post)
With your skylights installation moving forward in the best way possible, you can definitely enjoy a brightly-lit home without spending a dime on electricity. However, to provide excellent upkeep on your skylights, it pays to know how to provide proper maintenance. Custom Installations has that laid out for you in this short but helpful article.
4 TIPS FOR SKYLIGHT MAINTENANCE
A skylight can be a wonderful way to let more light into the house while adding warmth to dark spaces throughout the interior. Like most other features of the home though skylights need regular maintenance to function properly while also extending the life of the unit. Follow these four tips to keep the natural light shining through these beautiful architectural features.
Regular Inspections
An annual inspection is important to maintaining a worry-free skylight that will last and can easily be tied into a roof inspection or chimney cleaning. The professional contractor will not only complete basic maintenance tasks like cleaning the glass but also check for signs of deterioration or other issues that may be occurring.

Can Nike’s New Marathon Shoes Make You Faster? A Nike-Funded Study Says Yes
Eliud Kipchoge, the world's best marathon runner, runs in Nike shoes. But do his shoes help him run faster?
You'll be shocked—shocked!—to learn that Nike claims they do. Kipchoge wears a special version of the Vaporfly 4%, which got its name from a study out of CU Boulder. Funded by Nike, and conducted in collaboration with Nike researchers, it found test subjects shod in a Vaporfly prototype ran an average of 4 percent more efficiently than they did in the Zoom Streak 6, Nike's previous best racing shoe.
If you've followed the story of Nike's shoe as closely as WIRED has, there's a good chance you've heard about this study. What you probably haven't heard are the details behind it—how it was conducted, and what, exactly, the researchers who led it observed.
This week, those details were finally published in the peer-reviewed research journal Sports Medicine. So does the investigation pass muster? To find out, we visited the CU Boulder lab where the research was performed and compared notes with experts from the University of Calgary's Human Performance Lab. The upshot: It's a well-designed study with one minor flaw. Now. Let's run this thing through its paces, shall we?
First off, this study is about more than just Nike's shoes. Its goal was to determine whether and to what extent the Vaporfly reduces the energetic cost of running compared not only to the Zoom Streak 6, but the Adidas Adios Boost 2. At the time the study was performed, those shoes or their predecessors had been worn in the 10 fastest marathons of all time. (The fastest, a 2:02:57 race at 2014's Berlin Marathon, was set by Dennis Kimetto in the Boost 2.)
Pictured here are the three shoes used in the study. They are, from left to right, the Nike Zoom Streak 6, the Adidas Adios Boost 2, and the Vaporfly prototype.
Hoogkamer et al.
"We didn't want to compare the Vaporfly to Walmart specials," says biomechanist Rodger Kram, director of the CU Boulder Locomotion Lab and the study's principal investigator. "We wanted to compare it to the best marathon racing shoes out there."
The results were unambiguous: Of the 18 runners Kram and his colleagues recruited for the study, every one of them used less energy running in the Vaporfly than in either of the other shoes.
Exactly how much energy varied considerably between runners. All 18 of the study's test subjects were fast—to recruit them, Kram and his colleagues posted fliers looking for runners who could go 6.2 miles in under 31 minutes. But some saw more benefit than others. The study's rearfoot strikers saw slightly greater benefit than midfoot or forefoot strikers—but not much. The Vaporflys improved one test subject's running economy over the old Nike by just 1.59 percent, but they improved another's by 6.26 percent (with a similar range over the Adidas). The average across all test subjects: just over 4 percent.
"Those are outstanding results," says University of Calgary biomechanist Brian MacIntosh. "We've done research here in the Human Performance Lab where we look at the change in running energy cost, and even a 1.5 percent improvement is regarded as substantial. Four percent is just huge."
And while 18 might not seem like a lot of test subjects, for a biomechanics study it's higher than average. Kram went through the wringer to recruit even that many. When shoemakers design prototypes, they almost always manufacture them in a size 10. "So for us it was like Cinderella," Kram says. "We had to get 18 runners who all wore size 10 shoes”—and could run a 10k in under 31 minutes. "Boulder is one of the few places you could even do this study," Kram says.
The small sample size matters even less when you consider the effect the shoes had. "The difference the shoes made was highly significant," says University of Calgary biomechanist Benno Nigg, who has consulted for Nike previously but was unaffiliated with this research. The statisticians among you will appreciate that the 4 percent difference between the Vaporfly and the other two shoes had a p value of less than 0.001. For everyone else, Nigg puts it in simpler terms: "Look at the paper. Look at Figure 4. It's unbelievable. I mean, everybody saw an improvement."
The data suggests average runners would see an improvement, too. Crucially to most people reading this (unless you can run a five minute mile—in which case good on you, you freak), the energy savings was the same whether the test subjects ran at 6:53 per mile, 6:02 per mile, or 5:21 per mile—the three paces the researchers tested at.
"The energetic savings at all three speeds was very consistent," says biomechanist Wouter Hoogkamer, who led the study. "We didn't test it at slower speeds, so it will be very interesting to do follow-up studies, but the consistency suggests the improvement to running economy will be similar whether the person wearing them is running a five minute mile or a 10 minute mile."
The researchers attribute the shoe's effectiveness not to its weight, but its unique materials. (At 199 grams, the size 10 Vaporfly prototype that the researchers tested weighed four grams less than the Streak 6 and 51 grams less than the Boost 2, but Hoogkamer equalized their weight by sewing lead pellets into the tongues of both Nikes.) The Vaporfly uses a very light, compressible, and—most importantly—springy foam. When the researchers simulated the impact of a runner's footfall by pressing the shoes into a force-sensing plate, they found that the foam in the Vaporfly returned 87 percent of the energy it stored on impact. The Boost 2 returned 76 percent. The Streak 6? A measly 66 percent.
The Vaporfly also features a carbon fiber plate in its midsole, which caused no shortage of controversy when Nike unveiled the shoe earlier this year. As Ross Tucker, an influential sports scientist and blogger, put it at the time: "Any device inserted into the shoe, and which purports to add to energy return or elastic recoil or stiffness should be banned. That means the carbon fiber plate, or plastic etc but not necessarily the gels/air patches that offer cushioning, and not the foam, either."
But according to this study, at least, Tucker has it backwards. "In our lab the shoe reduced the energetic cost of running by an average of 4 percent. If you ask me what the breakdown is, I'd say about 3 percent of that is from the foam and about 1 percent from the carbon fiber plate," Kram says.
Our outside experts could only find one fault with the study: The test subjects knew what shoes they were running in. As high-caliber athletes, most were familiar with the Streak 6 and the Boost 2, and many had heard rumors of a new shoe in the works from Nike.
Could there have been a placebo effect? It's possible, says Nigg, who last year showed that test subjects who wore basketball shoes of differing weights performed identically when they were blind to the shoes' differences, but jumped 2 percent higher when they knew they were wearing the lighter shoes. But at the time of the Vaporfly study, none of the test subjects knew that Nike's prototype was purported to improve running economy. (It's worth pointing out, too, that Nike's prototype looked pretty janky compared to the completed product the company now sells.)
More importantly, MacIntosh says, it's very hard to lower your running economy intentionally. "The issue is: Even if the test subjects did know the shoe was supposed to improve running efficiency, how in the world could they alter their economy by 4 percent?"

The Epic Untold Story of Nike’s (Almost) Perfect Marathon
When I ask Kram why the test subjects were not blinded to the shoes they would be wearing, he says they might have been able to disguise the look of the shoes, but not their feel. "Ask any runner who has worn the Vaporfly and they'll tell you, whoa, these feel really weird, really soft." (I've worn them. They feel weird, and they feel soft.) "It would be like if i asked you to tell the difference between a really hoppy IPA and a Guinness stout," Kram says. "It’s easy to do. They feel that different."
The bigger question now is: Why haven't the results from the study translated to actual road races? A 4 percent boost in running economy means that a marathoner usually capable of running a 2:05 race should be able to slip on a pair of Nike's shoes and run pretty close to a two hour race, no problem. But that’s not what we see in the real world. It's true, Nike runners have scored some major victories in the shoe—including Shalane Flanagan, who earlier this month became the first American woman to win the New York City Marathon since 1977—but none of the performances have been Earth-shattering. All of which suggests something is lost in translation between the research lab and an actual, 26.2-mile road race.
That disparity could be due to any number of things. "Just to give you a sense of how complicated this stuff is, we have unpublished data that shows the energetic cost of running increases after about 90 minutes, and that the increase coincides with how much the Achilles tendon stretches on each footfall," MacIntosh says. That observation suggests the biomechanical advantage the Vaporfly provides could actually shift—or even become detrimental—as a runner's physiology changes over the course of a race.
But that's all speculative. For now, the hard numbers indicate that Nike's fancy, foam-tastic future-shoes really do boost running economy under carefully controlled lab conditions. A technicality? Sure. But it's one that Nike's PR team—and a lot of runners looking for a little edge on race day—will be more than happy to live with.
