What is the unforgivable sin? Part 1/2
Background information needed for biblical answer: the law, grace and salvation
This may also be called the unpardonable sin. This is a back-to-basics bible study today.
Today we are going on to a discuss the unforgivable sin. As you may know many Christians at times wonder (particularly when young in the faith) if we have committed the unforgivable sin.
Before we can study this question, we have got to do a fair bit of background work for as the unforgivable sin is a salvation issue. We need therefore to cover a few matters pertaining to our salvation.
Acts16:31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
Romans 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
The main message from this talk is to highlight the fact that we must believe on the Lord Jesus to be saved.
We are now all informed witnesses to Jesus Christ.
Keeping the Law of Moses cannot produce righteousness but faith in Jesus Christ can and does save all those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Why was the Law of Moses given to Israel?
There are three mains because the Law was given:
To show man that he was a sinner (see also James 2:10
For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in?
one point, he is guilty of all.)
The Old Testament was a shadow and a pointer to the
Lord Jesus Christ (Messiah).
3. To give a set of rules that will give peace in society.
How did God provide an answer to man’s sin problem?
Psalm 32:1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered. 2 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit, there is no deceit.
Matthew 7:13 "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
In the old testament God provided a sacrificial system in which innocent animals were slaughtered so that the guilty human could have their sins covered.
Matthew 7:13-14 The Lord Jesus is the bridge, or you could say, the door between man and God. Sin is no longer the barrier between man and God because Jesus died for the sins of the whole world. Now belief in the Lord Jesus Christ is the only gateway to Heaven. How narrow is the narrow gate? It is as narrow as one man, the Lord Jesus Christ.
Please note that the many are on the broad road to destruction and how comparatively few will find the way to eternal life.
John 3:18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. The only basis for eternal judgement is belief in Jesus Christ making it the deciding factor between salvation and condemnation.
Revelation 20:11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
The Great White Throne judgement is for the unbelievers only. What a frightening sight. This judgement is for all the unbelievers and is made only on a single basis. v15 is our key verse, no unbelievers names will be in the book of life because they did not believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.
The unforgivable sin- what it is not.
Any form of sexual sin
Nor suicide
Nor any besetting sin
Nor calling a brother a fool
It is also called the unpardonable sin meaning that God cannot forgive it or pardon it.
So what is it?
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.
If all of the above sins can be forgiven so what is the only sin that Jesus could not die for?
Amen
Personal Prayer
In Part two we discover what it means to blaspheme the Holy Spirit.

Living His Word

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. — Psalm 34:18
Our God is a God who forgives people of their sins. When they come to the point where they are ready to confess their sins, God is ready to forgive them and cleanse them. The Apostle John says, "But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness" (I John 1:9). When we confess, He also saves us from our trouble. Indeed, when we were first saved He "rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins" (Colossians 1:13-14).
In order to get to the point that starts the process, in order to get to the point of confession, however, people may have to go through some things. They may first have to come to the point where their hearts are broken. The brokenhearted of our verse for today are those who have gone through some trouble. They are those who have tried to make it on their own and have finally given up. Their hearts are broken because they have finally realized the sin and bankruptcy of everything they were trying to accomplish.
God is close to such people. The omnipresent God who is close to everything in general comes even closer to the brokenhearted. He will not turn away from or reject a broken and repentant heart (Psalm 51:17).
But God does more than just come close to such people. He also saves them. After their hearts have been broken, after their spirits have become contrite, God comes close to them, accepts them, and delivers them. He heals their broken hearts and He restores their contrite spirits. He lifts them up from their failures and gives them the strength to move forward again. God is more than willing to do this; He is more than willing to bless them: "Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit" (Psalm 32:1-2).
Today, consider the state you are in. Consider the state of your heart or spirit. If your heart is broken and if your spirit is contrite, then get ready.
Get ready for your blessing.

Psalms 32:1-2 - Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit.,,, We all want to be blessed by God but we too often think, wealth, power, health - mostly physical or this world things. In God's eyes, blessings are different. If you are a child of God, you are blessed more than you deserve. When we pray for blessing, start by thanking God for the blessing of forgiven sin, for Jesus cleansing blood and then pray for spiritual blessings, much as peace.

Psalm 32 (NKJV)
Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, Whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity, And in whose spirit there is no deceit.
When I kept silent, my bones grew old Through my groaning all the day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; My vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Selah I acknowledged my sin to You, And my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah
For this cause everyone who is godly shall pray to You In a time when You may be found; Surely in a flood of great waters They shall not come near him. You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Do not be like the horse or like the mule, Which have no understanding, Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, Else they will not come near you.
Many sorrows shall be to the wicked; But he who trusts in the Lord, mercy shall surround him. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice, you righteous; And shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

20th October >> Mass Readings (USA)
Friday, Twenty Eighth Week in Ordinary Time
or
Saint Paul of the Cross, Priest.
Friday, Twenty Eighth Week in Ordinary Time
(Liturgical Colour: Green: A (1))
First Reading Romans 4:1-8 Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.
Brothers and sisters: What can we say that Abraham found, our ancestor according to the flesh? Indeed, if Abraham was justified on the basis of his works, he has reason to boast; but this was not so in the sight of God. For what does the Scripture say? Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness. A worker’s wage is credited not as a gift, but as something due. But when one does not work, yet believes in the one who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness. So also David declares the blessedness of the person to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:
Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not record.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 32:1b-2, 5, 11
R/ I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Blessed is he whose fault is taken away, whose sin is covered. Blessed the man to whom the LORD imputes not guilt, in whose spirit there is no guile.
R/ I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Then I acknowledged my sin to you, my guilt I covered not. I said, “I confess my faults to the LORD,” and you took away the guilt of my sin.
R/ I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, you just; exult, all you upright of heart.
R/ I turn to you, Lord, in time of trouble, and you fill me with the joy of salvation.
Gospel Acclamation Psalm 33:22
Alleluia, alleluia. May your kindness, O LORD, be upon us; who have put our hope in you. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Luke 12:1-7 Even the hairs of your head have all been counted.
At that time: So many people were crowding together that they were trampling one another underfoot. Jesus began to speak, first to his disciples, “Beware of the leaven–that is, the hypocrisy–of the Pharisees.
“There is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops. I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body but after that can do no more. I shall show you whom to fear. Be afraid of the one who after killing has the power to cast into Gehenna; yes, I tell you, be afraid of that one. Are not five sparrows sold for two small coins? Yet not one of them has escaped the notice of God. Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid. You are worth more than many sparrows.”
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Saint Paul of the Cross, Priest
(Liturgical Colour: White: A (1))
(Readings for the memorial)
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Friday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 It was the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have faith.
Brothers and sisters: The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:
I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the learning of the learned I will set aside.
Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish? For since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have faith. For Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 117:1bc, 2
R/ Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.
Praise the LORD, all you nations; glorify him, all you peoples!
R/ Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.
For steadfast is his kindness toward us, and the fidelity of the LORD endures forever.
R/ Go out to all the world and tell the Good News.
Gospel Acclamation Matthew 5:6
Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness; for they will be satisfied. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel Matthew 16:24-27 Whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.
Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay each one according to his conduct.”
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

REPENTANCE Part 23

Confess Your Secret Sins by John Henry Jowett

How blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute iniquity, and in whose spirit, there is no deceit! — Psalm 32:2
Here is the burden of unconfessed sin. “When I kept silent about my sin, my body wasted away” [Psalm 32:3 NASB]. There is nothing brings on premature age like secret sin. It keeps the mind in perpetual unrest, and a troubled mind soon makes the body old. The real nourisher of the body is a quiet and radiant soul. But let the soul be in chaos, and the body will soon be a ruin.
And here, too, is the healthy act of confession. “I acknowledged my sin to you, and my iniquity I did not hide” [Psalm 32:5 NASB]. He retained no single germ of the whole unclean brood. He brought them out into the light one by one, as though he were emptying a noisome [stinky] kennel. He brought them out, and named them, in the awful presence of the Lord.
And here is the ministry of forgiveness, and therefore the miracle of restored health. Let me mark the rich variety of the descriptive words. “Forgiven!” “Covered!” “Imputed not!” It is all removed and obliterated, and the place of defilement and profanity becomes the holy temple of the Lord.

Blessed is the man whose iniquity the LORD does not count against him, in whose spirit there is no deceit. Psalm 32:2
David spoke of the great blessing there is for the man or woman who knows the forgiveness of God. His sin is no longer exposed; it is covered. David knew what it was like to be a guilty sinner. The stress of a double life and unconfessed sin made him feel old, oppressed, and dry. He knew the seriousness of sin and how good it is to be truly forgiven. He knew – as Paul would in Romans 4:6-8 – the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works. How blessed we are! We are a forgiven people. The Bible says that, if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive all our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

3rd March >> Mass Readings (GB)
Monday, Eighth Week in Ordinary Time
(Liturgical Colour: Green. Year: C(I))
First Reading Sirach 17:24-29 ‘Return to the Most High and turn away from iniquity.’
To those who repented he granted a return, and he encouraged those whose endurance was failing. Turn to the Lord and forsake your sins; pray in his presence and lessen your offence. Return to the Most High and turn away from iniquity and hate abominations intensely. Who will sing praises to the Most High in Hades, as do those who are alive and give thanks? From the dead, as from one who does not exist, thanksgiving has ceased; he who is alive and well sings the Lord’s praises. How great is the mercy of the Lord, and his forgiveness for those who turn to him!
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm Psalm 32(31):1-2. 5. 6. 7. ℟1a
R/ Rejoice in the LORD, exult you just!
Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is remitted. Blessed the man to whom the LORD imputes no guilt, in whose spirit is no guile.
R/ Rejoice in the LORD, exult you just!
To you I have acknowledged my sin; my guilt I did not hide. I said, ‘I will confess my transgression to the LORD.’ And you have forgiven the guilt of my sin.
R/ Rejoice in the LORD, exult you just!
So let each faithful one pray to you in the time of need. The floods of water may reach high, but such a one they shall not reach.
R/ Rejoice in the LORD, exult you just!
You are a hiding place for me; you keep me safe from distress; you surround me with cries of deliverance.
R/ Rejoice in the LORD, exult you just!
Gospel Acclamation 2 Corinthians 8:9
Alleluia, alleluia. Jesus Christ, though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich. Alleluia.
Gospel Mark 10:17-27 ‘Sell all that you have, and follow me.’
At that time: As Jesus was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, ‘Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?’ And Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: “Do not murder; Do not commit adultery; Do not steal; Do not bear false witness; Do not defraud; Honour your father and mother.” ’ And he said to him, ‘Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.’ And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, ‘You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.’ Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. And Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, ‘How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!’ And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, ‘Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.’ And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, ‘Then who can be saved?’ Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.’
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
