5/8/23 - Southern Dewberry

Between a dense evergreen bush and protective white tape, the southern Dewberry bush flits its head through the cracks, staring up at me with its splotchy white eyes. The black, red, and green berries pop out like friendly neighbors on stems with sleeves of thorns and leaves with pointed ridges on their edges. The berry’s center looks like a lollipop holder with seeds in its slots. Each seed’s got a puffed out balloon encasing it and each balloon’s filled with juice. When I touch the berry, it feels soft and full. When I taste it, I get sour and bitter flavors. Then I get sweetness and I chew the crunchy seed. The aftertaste is sour, but that sweetness lingers in my mind.
