what’s that? on your head? 💙
i have a soft spot for whenever characters wonder about black readers in bonnets sooooo
(this takes place in america btw you guys! idk thought i would mention that )
DEKU
Tumblr media
now...he’s blasian so you’re confused asf
you usually catch him staring at the bonnet everytime you put it on he always mumbles an apology and goes back to your previous conversation
very sweet boy when he’s asking! he’s so shy to ask though
“erm...y/n...what’s that?” he points to your bonnet, careful not to touch it
you felt your heart melt seeing his eyes light up with excitement when you explain to him
he’s writing everything you tell him down
next time you both go out shopping you let him pick out a bonnet
he’s wearing it 24/7
why is he fighting in a bonnet? you don’t know. but god damn does he look cute
you both get matching bonnets. you love posting pictures of you both in your bonnets
he always compliments you in your bonnet! always telling you how pretty you look
BAKUGO
Tumblr media
this nigga.
he’s the type to think your wigs are your natural hair
“how did you change your fuckin’ hair so quick”
BOY PLEASE.
you know he’s causing a ruckus when you’re wearing your bonnet
he trying to take it off and see what’s going on
bro just ask. PLEASE.
you eventually get fed up after he tried to take it off in public, but you grew up in a black household full of brothers. you have reflexes.
you also gave him a lecture on how that’s considered rude to just rip your bonnet off.
he’s actually pretty interested in bonnets he likes seeing you wear one and likes hearing you talk about it
he tries to play it off like he doesn’t care but then he tells you everything you just said in every little detail.
he gets super interested when you bring up durags. he always bothers your brothers about them
he look kinda good in them though. kinda.
he wont admit it but he thinks you look sexy asf in a bonnet
always staring. take a picture weirdo.
TODOROKI
Tumblr media
he is lost and distraught
he doesn’t want to offend but he’s so curious
he’s wondering how you fit all your hair in there
he likes staring at it
you eventually confront him about it and he just nods and listens
he starts adding to your collection of bonnets
long bonnets, adjustable bonnets, silk bonnets, satin, you name it
dropped a couple racks for a custom half and half bonnet similar to his hair
your fav bonnet out of them all <3
he always makes you wear a bonnet after that, you gotta explain to him that you wanna wear your half and half wig sometimes too na!
KIRISHIMA
Tumblr media
my darling! my super sweet darling!
he’s always hyping you up for wearing a bonnet or anything to protect your hair
always touching it,, he likes trying to squish it down
he thinks you’re so manly for wearing it whenever tf you want
“ah! i didnt mean manly as in...let me explain!”
once in a while he’ll bring a bonnet home he’ll think you like, you keep every single one of them
sometimes...you see little red hairs in your bonnet
you don’t mind at all though

hi hi! i wanted to request some hcs of class 1-a asking american reader abt america one night? or maybe just abt black culture? with deku just furiously scribbling stuff down in his notebook while muttering to himself! thank you 🤍
(a/n) : omg an ask!! 🥳🥳 also everything i talk about in this fic (including recipes) is just my experience w black culture (btw i’m black). also slight angst and mention of homesickness but mostly fluff
black!fem!reader explaining america to class 1-a
“so who’s making dinner tonight?” the question sero asked hung in the air for a bit of time before bakugou replied with an eye roll, “i’ll make it since the rest of you are incomplete around a kitchen.”
the rest of the class, tired, nodded their heads and kept doing what they were doing originally until someone else spoke up, “i’ll do it. i’ve been wanting to cook dirty rice for y’all,” you spoke from the couch.
“oh, what’s dirty rice?” kaminari asks you. “um it’s rice with ground beef, shrimp, peppers, and green onions,” you explain to the sparky hero-in-training.
“well im all for it!!” kirishima raises his fist in happiness while smiling at you. “it’s ground beef, shrimp, peppers, and…” deku looks at you expectantly while listing off the ingredients you said while writing them in his notebook.
“green onions. listen better stupid,” bakugou then turned to you with a deadpan face and asked, “you need help?” you shook your head, “no no thanks for the offer though.”
you walked towards the kitchen, grabbed the apron kaminari bought bakugou (which said “kiss my food, not the cook”), and started to gather your ingredients.
“alright none of y’all are allergic to anything, right?” you asked the class because you hadn’t cooked for them before, bakugou always stepping up to cook and you being too lazy to get up after grueling training. after hearing various responses of no’s, you get to work.
(insert about 30 minutes of you cooking beautifully)
“alright, kirishima, you set the table. we just need spoons and napkins,” you tell him while sprinkling green onions in everyone’s bowl. “yes ma’am!” kirishima starts to gather the spoons while everyone starts to sit down at the table.
when you and bakugou start handing out the bowls to y’all’s classmates, you can see almost all of their mouths drooling at the smell of the dish (shoji’s drool is coming from his mouth hand thing).
as you and bakugou sat down to eat, class 1-a put their hands together and yelled very quickly, “thank you for the food!”
as soon as the last word was said, nobody talked for at least 10 minutes, too busy eating and wiping out their food. deku was the first one to finish.
(y/n)! that was amazing!! did you make enough for seconds?” he finished his question by licking his lips of any remaining dirty rice.
“of course i did because we’ll be eating off of that for about 2 more days. but we’ll eat the rest tomorrow i guess.” everyone in the class looked at you excitedly. “we can eat this for the next 2 days?!” ururaka asked, smiling.
“of course. that’s the way my family does it anyway,” you shrugged. “really?” deku asks, this time more calmly, pulling out his notebook and pen.
“oh yea. that way we can just heat it up.” deku scribbles again. this time jirou asks, “what else comes with your culture, (y/n)?”
you scratch at your braids a bit, “um let’s see. what category do y’all wanna know?”
“oh um can we get braids?” aoyama spoke up.
“no,” you replied with a straight face. “oh,” aoyama nodded his head.
all of you guys spent the rest of the night talking about your culture and you felt a bit homesick as you walked back to your dorm room.
“hey,” a hand touched your shoulder. you turned back to see it was your fun, pink classmate, mina.
“if you ever want to talk about anything about america, i’m here for you,” she smiled and looked at you with genuine friendship. “if you didn’t know, i’m actually blasian,” she raised her left index finger to her dimple cutely.
“i would like that mina,” you placed your hand on mina’s, which was still on your shoulder. “come here,” she pulled you into a hug.
as you walked to your bed, fresh out of the shower, you were happy that you can handle this hero thing not by yourself, but with friends that respect your culture.
(a/n) : wow sorry it got kinda angsty at the end. and sorry it’s been a bit, i’ve started talking to somebody recently 🥰. and remember, as always, send asks! :3

Yo go off on your rant! Speak the truth
Okay Anon, I’ll do it for you!
So first, let me start this off by saying that Horikoshi definitely did not mean to make Midoriya black/blasian coded. He made Miruko, Rock Lock, and arguably Ashido, (two of whom are canonically black/dark skinned, all of whom and are written with a few negative stereotypes about black/dark skinned people, but for the sake of time, I will not be mentioning them in this post) black coded, but not Midoriya.
That being said, there are several points in Midoriya’s entire characterisation and development that definitely is relatable to black audiences.
Let’s start of with the glaringly obvious: Curly hair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second picture is only shown in a flashback, and it is played for laughs, but afro texture/curly hair is common in black/black-mixed people. I know Hori plays “Afro-Deku” for laughs (not really okay btw) but still. His hair is often described as “messy” which is how black hair is often described (also not okay, do not call a black person’s hair “messy”). Also, freckles are definitely somewhat common-ish in black/black-mixed people.
(I will also mention that some black bnha fans have an joke about his shoe style, saying that he’s definitely black, but that is neither here nor there)
Now that we have the joking aspect out of the way, let’s talk about how Midoriya grew up:
He grew up with an absentee father, which is a common (and negative) stereotype for black men, and also something that some black bnha fans like to joke about. Keep in mind that this is a joke amongst the BLACK bnha fans, I don’t want to see any non blacks joking about that.
(Sidenote: Black man marrying a non-black/light skinned woman? Also a common trope)
He was bullied horribly, and unfairly by Bakugo and the rest of his classmates due to his quirk status, which could be seen as an allegory for race/privilege/class. Basically over something that he couldn’t control. His teachers did absolutely nothing, and didn’t even seem to care. Sound familiar to how black/people of colour are treated in the real world by those with more privilege?
(Now I know this kind of comparison is flawed, since All Might gave him his quirk, so that kind of has negative implications in what I am trying to say, but my point still stands)
Now that Midoriya has his quirk, he’s working twice as hard to be seen as equal to his peers. Another reason that a lot of black people/minorities can relate to him, and why they hc him as black/blasian. He’s up against people who have had more privilege, and for longer than him. He’s fighting to catch up as best he can.
Midoriya’s skill/power is not acknowledged by everyone, as shown with Bakugo, and how he still sees himself as superior to Midoriya. A lot of black (and POC in general) work hard when it comes to things manual labour, content creation (music, art, dance, fashion, literature), white collar jobs, etc, but aren’t as widely acknowledged as their non black/non-POC counterparts.
(Keep in mind, that I am not saying that Bakugo is racist. I don’t like him, but I would never say that about him when in canon he is not racist. I am merely using pointing out that quirk status can be seen as an allegory for race and class, so this is merely an observation as to how higher class/non black people view POC and their achievements.)
Whew, this was long. But yeah, this is basically my reasons as to why I feel that Izuku Midoriya is heavily black/blasian coded, albeit unintentionally.
@izukukuzi and @miss-lee-lee-fan , I know that you both hc Midoriya as Afro-Asian, so I hope you guys give this a read!
