ANDY L - Hi Doc, I've been meaning to write for a while but been rather busy. Just wanted to say that I’m glad to see the return of horror news to Horror news radio. I think it was a good choice to divide things into horror news radio for news, and Gruesome magazine for reviews. It was often the case in the past or there’s a lot of overlap between what belonged in what feed. This is a much more clear delineation. While I agree with you that it’s nice to see Kurt and Wyatt Russell together on screen, I still have a bit of misgivings about the idea of either a Godzilla or a king Kong series. Not sure if either one is really well designed for that kind of multiple interconnected episodes. However, I will keep an open mind. Thank the crew for the continued entertaining podcast
DON JOE - These all look good to me but a new Marcus Dunstan film gets the vote from me. The dude has a great track record with multiple franchise pictures under his belt with writing and directing credits on Feast, Saw, Collector, Piranha. Although it's just a story credit, his take on Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark was a lot of fun and showed he could work in the family horror category too. Also loved his Into the Dark episode 'Pilgrim', a highlight episode on an under appreciated series. Here's hoping this next directing credit goes well and gets him even more work.
PAUL CARRO - I will watch anything with Samara Weaving, she has yet to be in a film that I did not enjoy. Great show!
CHAD WHITE - looking forward to Spirit Halloween. actually looks better than I expected. Thank you for hanging out with the Grue-Crew. Be sure to hit the LIKE, SUBSCRIBE buttons, or Share with a Friend. Every click counts.
Check out this episode!

Industry Insider: COVID Business Landscape, Part II
By Tom Michael
Everyone around the globe is adapting their ways of life and work to function as well as is possible during a pandemic. We all need to do our very best in both those areas, even when they begin to overlap and mesh together, as many of us have experienced. In our hobbies, it’s likely that adapting means going online for everything. That’s definitely what we are experiencing in numismatics.
For these articles, we are talking with many people to gain the broadest swath of information possible within our field. While it would be impossible for us to talk with everyone, we want you to know that we do care about everyone and hope that you all remain healthy and involved in your hobby. If you have a story to tell about numismatic life during the pandemic, please email us at [email protected].
In our shared hobby of coin collecting, it seems quite clear to me that just about everyone I know has done an excellent job of adapting to the pandemic. On individual, small-business, large-business and industry production scales I’ve learned that everyone is using the means at their disposal to keep our hobby vibrant and moving. For me, the hobby of numismatics is a true point of light in troubled times.
In last weeks’ COVID Business Landscape article, we touched base with coin dealers, bullion traders, distributors and one auction house, gaining their perspectives on business changes brought on by the pandemic. This week we will continue our coverage with insights from more auction houses, world mints, coin creators and central banks.
While production has had to be cut at many mints, some are still functioning at near full capacity. Some coin programs have been shifted due to change in dates of their commemorative events, but few have been canceled. Auction houses are dealing with problems in gathering consignments and shipping out lots, but bidding activity has been very strong. All coin businesses we have talked with are well-focused on the health of their staff. In more than a dozen mints, half-dozen auction houses and coin creators, and two central banks, everyone is reporting good health. This has been achieved through conscientious adherence to WHO, CDC and many government guidelines designed to limit the spread of coronavirus. Most all people are reporting use of masks and social distancing, in offices and on production floors. Many are doing much more.
Honey Mamabolo, managing director of the South African Mint described their approach to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of their staff in this way:
“All our decisions are grounded on the fact that people are our biggest asset and their health and safety is our highest priority. There is a COVID-19 Task Team that proactively manages and reports on the pandemic-related risks. We have appointed an on-site Compliance Manager to ensure adherence to the Health and Safety Protocol. There is also an on-site medical doctor – who serves as an Occupational Health and Safety Specialist – and performs bio health risk assessments, declaration of vulnerable employees and screening of employees before they commence with on-site work.”
Mamabolo confirmed that “Our efforts have helped us manage our responsibility towards our employees. The mint is happy to report that it has had no infections on-site to date. To ensure we remain a responsible employer and prevent any transmissions, we have taken the decision to keep a skeleton staff to a minimum at our facilities despite our classification as an essential service.”
This has reduced production for the South African Mint.
Mamabolo clarified that “The business is currently operating at less than 25 percent of production, focusing only on circulation coins. This has meant that the production and sale of collectibles/numismatics and bullion coins were halted, with our walk-in shop and museum also closed for the period.”
The grand Heritage Auctions building in Dallas, Texas, offers a comfortable office atmosphere for the majority of its staff. There is no open coin counter in the building, so call in to set up an appointment if you plan to visit. (Image courtesy Wikipedia.org, user submitted.)
Other businesses have also used skeleton staffing or alternating shifts to allow for social distancing. Steve Ivy, Co-Chairman and CEO of Heritage Auctions told me that “we’ve certainly followed all the CDC guidelines about social distancing and are wearing masks.”
The Heritage offices in Dallas have plenty of space, so social distancing is less problematic and the staff has remained healthy, which is great to hear. Shipping and receiving has been done in two shifts when necessary, and when certifying coins is required both Numismatic Guaranty Corporation and Professional Coin Grading Service are still handling the volume with only slight delays.
However, Ivy emphasized that while auctions were remaining on schedule as online events, lining up and picking up consignments for auctions became a problem once travel restrictions emerged.
“We obviously can’t travel to pick up consignments, so that becomes an issue for us.”
Referring to picking up consignments from collectors, Ivy said, “You can’t just hop on a plane and go there or if you can, you might not be able to get back, there’s all sorts of issues.”
Ivy pointed out that this has been an issue “for the last 45 days or so,” but he is beginning to see some remediation now.
With all coin auctions taking place online during the pandemic, we were pleased to hear from most auction firms that bidding activity has been very good.
Regarding Heritage Auctions, Ivy said, “Volume of bidding is good, mainly because there’s a lot of pent-up demand. People can’t get out and go to shops or go to shows, so if they want to buys coins … buying online is a good alternative.”
Due to U.K. government mandate, businesses were closed and people stayed home for three weeks beginning on March 23. After this period, the Pobjoy Mint reopened production full time.
Managing Director Taya Pobjoy informed me that “We are lucky that our set-up requires us already, in the manufacturing area, to use gloves and most of the staff use face masks too. We have a large facility so most people have their own room. The one thing we have set up are wall hand sanitizers around the office and any communal computer has antibacterial wipes by it.”
Office staff who can work from home are doing so, and so far everyone has remained healthy.
One difficulty Pobjoy mentioned is that they “have had a delay in receiving blanks, which has affected some jobs by a week, but the main delay is shipping. It is difficult to find flights available and they are very expensive!”
U.K.-based coin auctions have continued as well, using the online systems they had established for customers before the pandemic. Baldwin’s of St. James in London moved all its auctions online, with no public viewings. Their staff is working from home and is being kept pretty busy, but all are healthy.
At Dix Noonan Webb, Head of the Coin Department Christopher Webb tells us that they have held four live online auctions during the pandemic, with strong results.
“The collectors market, as always, has been very resilient and we have noticed a surge in online registrations for our auctions, with record numbers of new buyers. The average sales percentage has been over 95 percent.”
Similar boosts to business are happening at most online auctions. In California, Joseph Lang, CEO of Stephen Album Rare Coins, told me that worldwide the number of bidders has increased markedly. They have seen customers participating from 40-50 countries in recent online sales.
When asked about shipping, Lang explained that “72 countries have no postal service right now, so we are holding shipments for lots of successful bidders.”
The staff at SARC is working at the office in shifts to promote proper social distancing. They are wearing masks and following the state guidelines carefully and remain healthy.
Designer Almat Bassenov reports from the National Bank of Kazakhstan that “There are no registered cases of COVID-19 among the staff of the National Bank and Kazakhstan Mint.”
Regarding administration and production, Bassenov tells us that “We are continuing to work, and the mint works as well,” though with a slightly shortened day.
A few coin issues have had to be shifted out a month or two, and the logistics of closed borders and travel restrictions have made delivery of capsules and boxes difficult.
Edith Veldmeyer at the Royal Dutch Mint was happy to report that “we have had no COVID-19 illness within our company.”
Remaining open and operational, their business has still had challenges and changes.
“As we find it very important to support our customers, we have adjusted our way of working,” said Veldmeyer. “Our people work from home as much as possible. However, our production facility is still open and we have taken special measures in order to have employees working in a safe environment. The Royal Dutch Mint recently moved to new premises, so the challenge together with COVID-19 was even bigger. However, we managed to still support our customers and deliver the products ordered.”
The Royal Dutch Mint recently moved to a spectacular new golden facility just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The move included a planned backlog in production, which became exacerbated by the pandemic. The solution came through working in shifts so the staff could maintain both schedules and good health. (Image © Jacx Vastgoedpresentatie www.jacx.nl.)
Regarding coin program adjustments Veldmeyer said, “We are flexible and are able to adapt to changing situations. For example, we just launched a very successful commemorative coin (75 years of freedom). This time, the ceremonial first strike took place virtually (instead of the traditional physical strike) which allowed many interested collectors and other relations to be present virtually. The majority of our products planned this year, such as ducats, will be launched according to our planning. Some projects are postponed: the project for the Invictus Games will be launched in 2021. The Royal Dutch Mint always tries to think in solutions instead of problems.”
The Royal Dutch Mint’s annual ducat and double ducat can be ordered now for delivery in September. Mintage will be limited to the total reservations made before June 1.
At CIT Coin Invest AG in Liechtenstein, CEO Heimo Steriti sent this good news:
“CIT converted part of the team to remote working from home within a few days and left the rest of the team in the office, in compliance with government regulations. As a result, we have been practically always 100 percent available and have maintained our services, thanks to the great commitment of all our team.”
Steriti continued to say, “Fortunately, everyone on our team and their families were spared the Covid-19 virus, in part because they all followed the guidelines.”
You can begin to see significant similarities in coin-based business approaches to the risks of the pandemic. Social distancing, wearing masks, keeping hands and surfaces clean, working from home; these same methods we are using to protect ourselves and our families are also some of the best protections utilized by mints and auction houses to protect their staff and customers.
Steriti addressed some of the world’s pandemic business landscape in this comment to me: “The actions taken by governments in different countries have varied in severity and sometimes with a time lag, which has been challenging for global companies in many ways. The lock-down came overnight for all companies, but the recovery will take weeks or months.”
Certainly this is true, and the timespan may prove to be even longer, but one other thing I see in common with all the people I have contacted to help generate these reports is this: Every dealer, mint, bank, auction house and distributor in numismatics has proceeded into this pandemic by protecting their employees and developing a plan to serve their customers. The basic fact that none of us have stopped or frozen or tossed up our hands and walked speaks volumes about our character, our base of historical knowledge and our uplifted outlook. Numismatics rocks, my friends, and we should be very pleased with our perseverance!
In some cases, even though health of staff has been carefully protected, government restrictions have forced heavier adjustments to mint production. These difficulties have been met in creative ways by many mints, while remaining within the boundaries of mechanical production facilities.
At the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda, S.A. in Lisbon, Portugal, António Verdasca, division chief of coins, tells us that “Here in the mint the production and logistics are working in two teams of 50 percent. We may say therefore that we are working at 50 percent of our capacity. Commercial and financial departments are working at home in the home office. Our four shops are open with only one employee and one costumer inside.”
As for the rest of the country, Verdasca relays that “The number of infected people in the hospitals are visibly decreasing and we did not face any rupture in the National Health Service.”
Very welcome news indeed.
Operating production in shifts has proven a good method for the Hungarian Mint also, as General Manager Teréz Horvath explained, “We tried to minimize risk by splitting the staff into weekly shifts: one week active employment another week standby at home. It seems that it has been proven a good decision as we could keep the loyalty and confidence of our colleagues and also could keep off infection and maintain the main activities. All the staff and their relatives remained healthy.”
Horvath explained that sales methods have changed.
“We closed our retail shop and tried to drive the sales online. Online sales and mail orders go well; our customers still do continue collecting. We tried to keep alive interest of them through regular social activities and by drawing attention to others’ activities related to numismatics.”
These proactive approaches, once fun concepts, are now necessities to maintain the health of the business.
Regarding changes to their coin programs, Horvath explained, “No cancellations so far, but paralleled with shifting of international sporting events – Euro Football tournament, Olympics Tokyo 2020 – the issue of the related coins was shifted to the next year, as well. Hungary was planned to host the biggest international event of the Catholic Church of the year 2020, the Eucharistic Congress. It has been postponed to 2021, which resulted in the postponing of the issue of the concerned collector coin as well.”
Not all mints have been able to continue production, however, due to government restriction or practical difficulties in protecting staff. In France at the Monnaie de Paris, Senior Product Manager Julien Sabouret explained that “From mid-March on, all our teams have been requested to do home-office and of course our production has been stopped. As far as we could not do anything concrete such as engraving, tooling… we focused on all our immaterial matters as well as on our product plan for the coming years.” At the mint facility a small staff remains for security. With the program group planning ahead for adjustments the Monnaie de Paris should be prepared to act quickly once reopening becomes a possibility.
As for any coin issue delays, Sabouret explained, “Our aim was not to cancel any program; we postponed a few that were not linked to a particular anniversary and looked forward to match the timing for those with specific dates in the year.”
The Singapore Mint was closed by government directive on April 7 and will remain closed until June 1. Vice President of Program Management Tay Hwee Ping told us that “Schools are closed as well. This period is referred to as circuit breaker period, locally. We are working from home so long as our job function allows.”
So business continues, at least for some stages, and planning ahead may be the best that can be done for now.
In Madrid at the Real Casa de la Moneda, coin production is at a standstill, but other production goes on, according to Jose Barrios Cardona in commemorative coins.
“As a factory of a wide range of products, we have limited its activity to essential and critical services,” Cardona said. “Collector Coins Department, as a non-staple activity, closed its production department.”
The Commercial Department commemorative coins team is working from home, like so many of us.
Cardona explained that this approach was targeted to “preserve the health of the staff and to curb the spread of the virus.”
2020 collector coin programs are on hold for now and will be delayed as a result, but Cardona said, “Initially it is not intended to cancel any of the issues.”
So, regarding staff health and production or service issues, the primary coin market of new issue production finds itself at different stages and in different social circumstances, while secondary coin market providers like auction houses find that they can shift and adjust their businesses with greater ease and more control.
However, selling coins is another matter entirely. In sales, the primary and secondary coin markets are finding similar solutions in the COVID-19 world. We found that they are addressing the problems with the same tools, creating a new numismatic landscape of online platforms. Numismatics for businesses in the pandemic world requires using online systems to buy and sell new and old coins just as it will require communication, research and social interaction among collectors to move primarily online as well.

Getting What You Pay For
Below is an excerpt from my book, “Made to Make It: A Guide To Screen Printing Success.”  Learn helpful tips and tricks on how to run a screen printing business.
Purchasing
When I started Ryonet, like a lot of other business start-ups, I had NO clue about purchasing. I bought things from whoever I could get them from, without any consideration of price or quality. To make the screen printing kits I started selling on eBay, I went to a local supply house and bought shirts and quarts of ink at retail. I bought lumber and hardware from local hardware stores and Home Depot; bought boxes from a retail box store, and took my packages down to UPS every day with retail stickers on them. I made the kit for about $150 and sold it for $200. That’s a LOT of work to do for $50 of profit. This was all, of course, before I started an official business. When I decided to do this full time in 2004, I knew I had to buy stuff for a lower price. I called manufacturers like Ulano and Union Ink and asked if I could get set up as a distributor and buy at a wholesale. They essentially laughed a bit, then referred me to a local distributor, so I started shopping.
I found a supplier that would work with me on price and a sales rep that knew a lot about the process of screen printing. He was able to give me some guidance on the process I should be following, and provide me with the right materials and supplies. I was still buying things at retail pricing from a distributor, but I did get a little bit better price, and I started purchasing in bulk. Eventually, we ended up hiring that sales rep and asking him to help us develop manufacturing relationships where we could buy at wholesale pricing. As our business grew, we began to notice things that we could make ourselves for a lot less. We started making our squeegees, scoop coaters, light stands, exposure units, and even tried our hand at making screens.
We eventually bought a screen manufacturer that became Nortech Graphics, an offshoot of Ryonet. We later purchased Riley Hopkins and started making equipment. Now we even make Green Galaxy Ink and some of our chemicals. We are just about as vertically integrated as any company out there, but it wasn’t always like that. To this day we hold valuable relationships with other manufacturers that allow us to benefit from their ability to produce a better quality item more efficiently than we can do ourselves. In the US and Canada, for example, we hold an exclusive relationship with ROQ equipment.
Along the way, our most important consideration when purchasing materials, supplies, and equipment has always been buying the best quality products, at the most affordable price. Quality should always come first when making your buying decisions. If you can negotiate,or partner, to buy quality in volume, even better.
Types of Purchases
MATERIALS
These are the essential items that you will purchase, becoming part of the “Bill of Materials” (BOM) that comprise your finished product. Things like shirts and ink fall in this category. When buying materials, keep in mind your niche, and the quality of the final product. What is the experience you want your customers to have with your brand?
SUPPLIES
These items are needed to produce your product, but they are not part of it. Things like squeegees, tape, and screens fall within this group. When purchasing supplies, don’t forget the impact they have on your production process. Buy supplies that accentuate production, not delay it.
PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT
These are the things that you use to produce and fulfill your finished product—ranging from computers and software to screen printing equipment and shipping scales. When shopping for equipment, think of it as a long-term investment that needs to deliver lasting performance. Do you want to be penny-wise or pound foolish?
Pay Your Dues
If you think you’re going to start out in business buying at the best price, you’re naive. Until you have enough volume to negotiate, your best bet is to spend your time getting good at producing and marketing what you do. When it comes down to it, the big shops who have been doing it for years aren’t paying a whole lot less than what a new shop can purchase things for in the “wholesale” market. A small shop, with dialed-in processes and a good niche, can make 5-10X the profit per garment (if not more) than a large contract shop that’s printing for pennies a piece. As you grow, yes, your volumes will increase. As your volumes increase, your margins will decrease. As they decrease, you will need to offset that by decreasing your costs, but by then you’ll have the justification to do so and much more buying power.
Volume Speaks Volumes
If you don’t have the volume, another option you have is to use someone who does to assist with purchasing. Going through a broker isn’t a bad way to start out as a small business. Companies like www.shirtspace.com make purchasing t-shirts easy and have 1000X the buying power of a small operation. A lot of times you can buy things from that site for less than buying direct from a shirt warehouse! We still use freight brokers at Ryonet because they do so much freight that their prices are less than our negotiated contracts with UPS and FedEx.
Be a Good Customer
Make it easy on your vendor to do business with you. At Ryonet, we actually rank the level of our customers’ professionalism and ease of doing business with. Clients who email us purchase orders with exact parts and pricing or use the backend of screenprinting.com to place their orders make it much easier to fulfill orders than those that randomly call or text urgent needs for “white ink” by tomorrow. I can’t count how many times that “white ink” really needed to be “poly white ink” and the sales rep sent cotton white ink—putting the customer in a bind and forcing us to next day air additional product, all because the order was not placed through a documented system. Use a purchasing software if you can, and if you can’t, use the website and tools the distributor has provided you. You’ll get better service, and you won’t be up a creek without a paddle.
Buy a Little Extra
This means extra ink, screens, or blanks. Because when a mistake happens, you don’t want to wait to fix it, when you can fix it right then and there because you have extras. You are going to save more time and money by keeping production moving vs. the cost of adding a few extra dollars to the order.
Buy Nice, Not Cheap
One of my favorite sayings is “Cheaper isn’t better. Better is better.” Don’t just get the cheapest garments or ink. Use good quality product, and use it to differentiate yourself from all the others that don’t! And this doesn’t just apply to materials; it goes for your supplies as well. While your supplies aren’t part of the finished product, they DO very much either add or take away value from the production process, which affects your bottom line. Cheap supplies can drag production times, costing you money!
I do want to take a moment to dig into the last point a little bit deeper, related to the quality of your supplies. Let me give you a couple of specific examples of supplies that are critical to your production process, and why quality matters.
Screen Tape
Yup, you can buy CHEAP screen tape. Lots of printers use a standard box or masking tape; this saves them $2-$3 a roll compared to buying low adhesive screen frame tape. That’s big, right? $2-3 a roll, which could be a 50% savings! But wait. What costs more, tape or time?
Screen Cleaning Chemicals
Yup, you can buy some VERY cheap chemicals that get the job done. They stink, and they aren’t friendly to your printers, or to the environment. But who cares about that? They do what you need them to, right? Not so fast.
Neil Rackham’s SPIN Selling suggests that you ask four types of questions when talking to potential customer:
Hmm…you might be thinking, but that’s pretty much the same amount? Is it really, though? At the end of 2 hours, you either have an employee that is ready to go to the next task—who feels great physically and mentally about the day—or, you have an employee with a headache, who’s been reminded how much he hates screen cleaning. What do you think the difference in productivity is going to be between these two employees for the rest of the day, 30%? That’s $5 lost per hour!
Before wrapping up this section, I do have a personal story I’d like to share related to choosing products that aren’t just good for your bottom line, but also for your employees. One of my screen printing mentors was Marvin Guillot, whom you can still see on many of our old YouTube videos including the Ryonet Pocket Pro and the Low Rider Dryer video which you can search on youtube and probably still find. Marv was a big dude and an industry vet. He had his way of doing things and that way involved using a ton of the “good products” that got the job done. He grew up in screen printing production using solvents to clean and produce like they were going out of style. I always hated when he went on a cleaning frenzy before class because the whole shop smelled so bad, like screen opener. He went through cases of it.
It was a running joke at first, but when his health began to deteriorate, his doctor attributed his failing liver to years of using these products, accentuated by an unhealthy lifestyle. His attitude completely changed on the use of these products, and he became an advocate for greener sustainable products like pallet glue, eco washes, and water-based inks. One of my last conversations with him pertained to writing an article and doing some industry videos to bring this critical discussion to the forefront of the industry. Unfortunately, we never got around to doing it.
Marv died in December 2013 after helping one of his first Ryonet clients (and friend) Sasan, from One In A Million www.oneinamillioninc.com, with installation and training as he upgraded his shop to a new ROQ. His passing was a total shock and unexpected. Marv had his pluses and a lot of minuses, but he didn’t deserve to go like that. Since his death, I have made it my mission to elevate the need for greener products and business practices in the industry.
Final Thoughts
JARROD HENNIS, FOUNDER OF PIRATE NINJA PRINT SHOP AND ROCKFORD ART DELI, ON BUYING FOR YOUR NICHE:
“One of our challenges has been that we don’t order the same volume as big shops. Our average run is maybe 50-100 shirts. But our niche is ‘American-Made,’ and we’re committed to that. We buy American Apparel. It costs more, and that means it’s not for every customer. But it’s right for OUR customer. They offer high quality, with a huge variety of color choices. Even better, working with a distributor, TSC Apparel, we can buy from them at an affordable price, and with awesome service.”
KEVIN CORCORAN, CO-FOUNDER OF FORWARD PRINTING, ON BEING A GOOD CUSTOMER AND PARTNER:
“We have accounts with several distributors like most screen printers do. One thing we’ve learned over the years is that service is more important than price. We operate using a ‘Just-In-Time’ (JIT) strategy, which means reliability is crucial. We choose relationships where we know we can trust the supplier to go the extra mile for us because we’re a good customer. Even if it costs us a little bit more.”
DAN CORCORAN, CO-FOUNDER OF FORWARD PRINTING, ON CHOOSING QUALITY OVER PRICE:
“Service isn’t the only thing that’s more important than price. So is quality. Saving $20 on a gallon of ink doesn’t mean much if it ends up slowing your production down by 100 shirts an hour. We need the presses to be spinning all day. The wonderful thing about having strong relationships with a variety of distributors is that it allows us to shop around for the best quality materials and supplies.”

George A. Romero Dead: 'Night of the Living Dead' Director Was 77

George A. Romero Dead: 'Night of the Living Dead' Director Was 77
His low-budget body of work, which included ‘Night of the Living Dead’ and ‘Dawn of the Dead,’ creeped out audiences for decades.
George A. Romero, the legendary writer-director from Pittsburgh who made the 1968 cult classic Night of the Living Dead for $114,000, thus spawning an unrelenting parade of zombie movies and TV shows, has died. He was 77.
Romero, who put out five other zombie movies after a copyright blunder cost him millions of dollars in profits on his wildly popular first one, died Sunday of lung cancer, his producing partner, Peter Grunwald, told the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the news. Romero’s family confirmed his death to the newspaper as well.
Romero’s manager, Chris Roe, posted on Facebook that the director died while “listening to the score of The Quiet Man, one of his all-time favorite films, with his wife, Suzanne Desrocher Romero, and daughter, Tina Romero, at his side. He died peacefully in his sleep following a brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer and leaves behind a loving family, many friends and a filmmaking legacy that has endured, and will continue to endure, the test of time.”
Romero’s 1978 sequel Dawn of the Dead was made for $1.5 million and grossed $55 million. He followed that by writing and directing Day of the Dead (1985), Land of the Dead (2005), Diary of the Dead (2007) and Survival of the Dead (2009), a decomposing body of work that earned him the nickname Father of the Zombie Film.
Romero also penned a new version of Night of the Living Dead, released in 1990, that was directed by Tom Savini, his longtime collaborator and horror effects guru. (And Dawn of the Dead was remade by Zack Snyder in 2004.)
Some film scholars and horror enthusiasts contend that social commentary — specifically salvos against the military and materialism — lurked within Romero’s films. Most of his work was shot in Pittsburgh, where Romero attended Carnegie Mellon University.
Night of the Living Dead, the story of seven strangers trapped in a farmhouse besieged by a lynch-mob posse of staggering zombies, devastated/delighted audiences at the time of its release, its stark and grainy black-and-white cinematography imbuing it with a documentary realism.
Romero and his nine other investors, including co-writer John A. Russo, had cobbled together $6,000 to start production on the film, then titled Night of the Flesh Eaters. It premiered at the Fulton Theater in Pittsburgh on Oct. 1, 1968, and quickly caught on as a staple of midnight screenings around the country. But most of the profits eluded the investors because of a mistake by the distributor.
“We lost the copyright on the film because we put it on the title,” Romero explained in “Night of the Living Steelers,” an installment of NFL Films’ Timeline series that premiered in October. “Our title was Night of the Flesh Eaters; they changed it to Night of the Living Dead.
“When they changed the title, the copyright bug came off, so it went into public domain [and] we no longer had a piece of the action. Everybody had a copy of Night of the Living Dead because they were able to sell it without having to worry about royalties going to us.”
Night of the Living Dead was rare for its time in that it featured an African-American actor (Duane Jones) as a hero in a mainstream movie.
After directing the box-office failures There’s Always Vanilla (1971), Hungry Wives (1972) and The Crazies (1973), Romero, looking to make ends meet, produced a series of TV documentaries that focused on such Steeler legends-in-the-making as Mean Joe Greene, Franco Harris, Terry Bradshaw and Rocky Bleier.
He returned to the zombie milieu with Dawn of the Dead (this time with copyright intact), which was filmed at the Monroeville Mall outside Pittsburgh. “This was the first indoor mall we had ever seen,” he said in the Timeline documentary. “I said, ‘Wow, this is a temple to consumerism. There’s my topic.’ “
Once, during an AFI screening of Night of the Living Dead, he was asked what terrified him. “I don’t have any supernatural hobgoblins that I worry about,” he said. “What scares me is life.”
George Andrew Romero was born Feb. 4, 1940, in the Bronx. As a teen, he was crazy about movies, especially the Michael Powell-Emeric Pressburger opera fantasy The Tales of Hoffmann (1951). To watch it, he had to rent a movie projector and a print of the film from a movie house in Manhattan.
“They had one print,” he recalled. “Whenever it was gone, I knew the guy who had it. And when that guy came in and it was gone, he knew who had it. And that guy was Marty Scorsese. … We were the only two people who rented Tales of Hoffmann.”
Romero studied art and design at Carnegie Mellon, graduated in 1960 and started a commercial production company, Image Ten Prods. He made a Calgon detergent ad that lampooned the 1966 film Fantastic Voyage and did a segment for the kids show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood that showed the host preparing to have a tonsillectomy.
All that helped pay for the camera his team used to shoot Night of the Living Dead. Money was tight, so the basement of his company’s office on Fort Pitt Boulevard in Pittsburgh doubled as the farmhouse basement in the movie.
Romero’s other work included Knightriders (1981), a mayhem movie with combatants jousting on motorcycles; Creepshow (1982), modeled after horror comics and scripted by Stephen King; Monkey Shines (1988), a psychological thriller revolving around a killer simian; The Dark Half (1993), where a writer’s alter ego aims to take over; and Bruiser (2000), about a man who finds his face transformed into a blank mask.
Romero also dabbled in the world of comic books with the limited Marvel series Empire of the Dead.
Glimpses of the man himself can be seen in many of his films, and he had a cameo as an FBI agent in Jonathan Demme’s The Silence of the Lambs (1991).
Thanks to Romero, Pittsburgh has been called the “Zombie Capital of the World” and each year hosts an event called Zombie Fest, complete with a brain-eating contest.
“I used to be the only guy in the playground, I was the only guy doing zombies,” he said in the Timeline doc. “Then all of a sudden The Walking Dead happened and it became mainstream. And now they’re all over the place.”
Duane Byrge contributed to this report.
