related to that last post it does fascinate me how much fic tagging culture has changed over time, ranging from no or minimal tags, to more expansive tagging, chatty tagging like tumblr, and now getting something that feels like a response to tagging on like, instagram or tiktok, 'tagging for visibility', being (further) misapplied to an archive setting. like, as someone who first read on specific fandom archives and forums that really didn't do tagging iirc, and first posted on ffnet with verrrrry minimal tagging (sure can't tag background ships on there!), even my own tagging on ao3 has evolved a great deal in the ~decade ive been on there. and then of course all of these fic tagging cultures exist simultaneously in different fandoms and from different circles of people based on preferences and norms that may have been established on social media or in print zines.
#squire's adventures in the archive#i really do appreciate that ao3 is deliberately designed to allow those different tagging cultures and allows tags to grow#it gets frustrating with things like intentional overtagging/tagging for visibility#but those *are* against TOS#ive got preferences and my own perspective of course#as evidenced below#and i do appreciate that ao3 has easily usable ? buttons to get info on types of tags and a useful faq (that i wish folks would read more)#so there is guidance and useful info#on tags and also on tag wrangling#thank you tag wranglers!#though i do realize i contradict those re: putting background relationships in the additional tags field XD#blah blah blah please stop adding a&b tags to your a/b ship fic blah blah blah shakes fist at cloud XD
