10 comfort films
Ty for tagging me @mothdogs !!
1. Matilda the musical (2022) I have watched this film so many times and it's not even been out for a year. I love it so much. It's one of the only dvds I got new from hmv as soon as it came out. I could quote the whole thing on command. I cry whenever I watch it. I feel like I've lived with this film for my whole life when in fact I only saw it on a whim with my parents, towards the end of its theatrical run, cos of fond memories of the show.
2. The Suicide Squad (2021) it's the best superhero film. I love it so much.
3. Time Bandits (1981) pure whimsy. I could also probably write a decent essay on the theology of this film but that's another conversation
4. War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) I could probably put any of the apes films here (except the 2001 one) but this one is just. So beautiful and so good and I love it so much
5. The Blues Brothers (1980) I hate illinois nazis
6. Doctor who city of death. Shut up it's on letterboxd it counts as a film. I have other favourites of the show but this is the one I put on to lift my mood
7. Blade Runner 2049 (2017) I only discovered this one like a week ago but will 100% be rewatching many times
8. Star Wars (1977) is it a hot take to say, andor aside, the franchise has never been as good as that first film? I treasure my unspecialised edition dvd BTW I haven't watched the cgi monstrosities in about a decade
9. Bit (2019) it's gay vampires what more do u want
10. Baby driver (2017) banging soundtrack fantastic direction great story
Oh god i'll tag uhhh
@merrygejelh @regicidal-defenestration @charliedooku @rainethorn @justanotherbookortwo @wouldbeheroine @starfrog1 @emailsquid & anyone else who sees this consider urself tagged

My new managers have kinda fucked things up. They moved my hours, though not by much it's still enough to mess with my eating and sleeping. And they have me working 8 days in a row this week into next.
I found a blade runner/2049 dvd at walmart for $5. Two of my favorite movies.
Finally fixed my pc. I thought i was going to have to pretty much ship of Thesius the fucker. Turns out all it took was wiping my graphics drivers and reinstalling slightly older versions. However I didn't figure that out until after i reset my entire pc. I now have to re-pirate Fl Studio and Adobe shit, but we ball.
Also zyns are so fucking expensive goddamn it.
Love,
Kaylee

IMAX RANT
I understand the elitist tone of saying moviee should be watched in theatres, but I genuinely do think movies should be watched in theatres. I saw some people getting mad at Villeneuve's comments about IMAX, and my first reaction is yeah they do kinda suck but I don't think he's wrong. There is something about a massive screen, a group viewing and "supposedly" perfectly calibrated sound/picture that is actually really important. If the first time I watched 2001 was outside of an IMAX theatre I don't think I would or could have appreciated it nearly as much. When I saw Blade Runner 2049 on opening night in a packed theatre and the credits rolled there was an eerie silence and for two minutes before anyone dared to move. Tenet is genuinely the only movie to make me scared of a gun going off. These are all experiences I don't think you can get at home without having the money or space for a decent sound system and a BIG 4K tv, and how many people want or can have either of those things.
Nobody can afford to see every movie in theatres, and not every movie will be playing in a local cinema once it stops it's intial run and this is where I side more with the descenters. IMAX is big and square. Most tvs are niether of those things. Not to go on a back in my day tirade but I remember when you bought a blu-ray and the aspect ratio would change to try or completely fit the whole IMAX picture into the release, but since the streaming takeover they've given up. Most home releases keep a consistent aspect ratio for the whole runtime. I think maybe it confused the average movie goer and I get that, but in the streaming era people buying physical copies want the closest thing to a "true" experience as they can at home. Not even providing an option means these movies are largely incomplete unless you have the means to see it during its intial run at one of the few IMAX screens in the world.
Yes IMAX video on regular TV's look weird but when you start repeating the cycle of PAN and SCAN VHS then we have a bigger problem. There are better examples of how much you lose not seeing some of these movies in IMAX especially DUNE, and that I think is what's unexcusable. The best and the only are two separate things. Disney has started to put out IMAX cuts onto DISNEY+ but completely ommit them from the dvd releases. Your mom or your dad might not think they care but when you lose so much of the frame and context they might actually relize that they do actually like it when they see the full thing. That's irrelevant though because you just don't have that option, even if you spend thousands of dollars to get as close as you can at home you will never be able to because of some studio bullshit.
That's the goal though. They don't want you owning it. Even after you buy your 4K collector's edition, they want you running back to the theatres for the release because you being the savy film enthusiast know that's the only way to actually watch the full movie. They don't want your one purchase, it's not enough, it's never enough. History repeats itself. First VHS and now this, do I think we will ever have studio concede? I don't know, it's possible but not for decades. All the media people consume is wide not square, TV's got wider to accommodate the content. Projectors aren't really an issue if you have a home theater the screen can grow and shrink. We have had rolling TV's for awhile, maybe that's what's next. TV's that roll up to accommodate square IMAX movies and roll back for eveything else but some wacky tech like that isn't something people are going to even start to want until half the movies coming out are filmed in IMAX. Even then most movies and tv that's coming out is mixed for 5.1 by default and it's been that way for a long time even on streaming but I will bet most people listen to it on something that is stereo or mono.

I would also recommend people search their local libraries for DVD copies of other Ryan Gosling movies. I was able to find The Place Beyond the Pines, First Man, and Blade Runner 2049 at my local library.

So I feel like as someone who lives in Chicago, I SHOULD watch The Bear. Especially because I worked in the service industry for 10ish years as a bartender/server/someone who had too many meltdowns in the kitchen cooler while eating away at $100+ wheels of cheese because I wasn't getting paid enough to be abused by customers sorry guests.
Soooo... I bought edibles and I think after watching Blade Runner 2049 for the first time (I've literally had the DVD on a shelf since 2018... I blame the Miguel O'hara memes!) I'll watch ONE episode of The Bear. I just have a hard time crushing on a crusty looking cook because I've dealt with too many in real life. They're trash. Offering you fries is just a gateway to trouble and meth mouth.
#i swear to god imma get super triggered#the abuse of people in the servoce industry is wild#the thing people have said and done is lowkey highkey wiiiillllldddddd#its where i developed my dislike for certain tourists#chicago#service industry#the bear#fx on hulu

Also just discovered Cleopatrick and they are just sucking me in, which I didn’t really expect but now I find myself actually enjoying their small-town America anger.
Last thing I saw was a silly cat video – I have some Instagram favorite accounts.
Last Movie - Mad Max Fury Road. I didn’t have time to see Furiosa yet, but I’m planning to catch it on when it’s on Netflix maybe. Catching up with The Witcher. Rewatched The 13th Warrior (on DVD because it’s not available otherwise.)Also Blade Runner 2049 (Love & Joy.) I haven’t seen Dune even though I’m a huge fan and have read all the books repeatedly, because once I see the movies, well then my head canon will be taken over and I won’t be able to escape, and there’s some actual life stuff I have to get done before I immerse myself in Dune 1 & 2. Yes, I am self-flagellating about this as I want but I can’t let myself want too much.
(oooh, I haven’t heard of Mad God before, so now I looked it up and it’s stop motion animation, so now I’m interested.)
Currently Reading: I just picked up Sense & Sensibility and Sea Monsters. (love the horror cross-over.) Previously I read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which was very funny and ridiculous, yet full of homage to dear Jane. The Wager is on my list also. I’m trying to get it from the library. Bing read obsessively fast, save $.
Sweet, Spicy or Savory? Difficult to answer. I tend to munch some potato chips and then eat dark chocolate. But I have those spicy Buldak noodles that were just recalled in Denmark for being too painfully spicy on my counter food pile (people, just don’t put ALL the spice packet in the noodles and you will be just fine, really.)
Relationship: Separated and never getting back together again. Last thread to untangle this month is the health insurance plan. Love has the power to lift us up to the glorious heavens but also to crush like the abyssal ocean’s depths of the Mariana Trench (that’s how fathomlessly deep the lows felt.) Still believe in the inherent goodness of people.
Current Obsession: Came late to watching The Terror (just a few months ago) and now it’s burning holes in my brain. Likes are historical fashion (saving way too many screenshots), stuffed animals and dolls (all kinds, I legit have reference books), history, classics, gothic horror, science fiction, maybe throw some vampires in here too, cats, sewing, crocheting, some knitting (but for the mind-calming repetition.) I’ve been following insta accounts on tiny crochet and just got some DMC thread and the smallest hooks, but I haven’t started yet. My Dad loved naval history and was a British history enthusiast, so I absorbed that and fell right into The Terror, admiring the accuracy of the costumes and the ships’ details – the show runners did such an excellent recreation.
Last Googled: the coordinates of Hawaii (The Expedition’s official destination) and many, many maps on the Northwest Passage (printed some out to color with pencils just for fun), fell down the rabbit hole of how a Fox Dipping Needle magnetic device works, and reading polar and Antarctic adventure blogs posted by very hardy, possibly crazed by hubris, modern day explorers. (One was actually recreating the experience of man hauling sledges across part of King William Island just to see if they could do it – spoiler, Yes, but they managed to avoid a polar bear by luck and nearly died from exhaustion because it was SOOO much harder than they thought, and their tents and clothes became frost laden.)
Currently Working On: IRL – health insurance & getting my car fixed, feeling out my next side gig (tutoring again?) while at my day job I try to up my skillset as the jobs have been thinning out and I suspect my boss will be retiring soon. Besides adulting, happily reading my way through a sheer mountain of Terror fanfic on A03 and rolling characters and scenarios around in my head because those cold boys are still stuck out in the ice and suffering – I’m not willing to let them die of scurvy and starvation yet. Also, easily distracted by other shiny posts that refer to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, anime art, silly cats, Horatio Hornblower (I saw those episodes on public tv years ago and so happy that fandom exists), and Captain & Commander. (Was recently asked if I knew: “What’s the movie with those boys on a boat and the Captain and the cannon balls?"
nine people i want to get to know better!!
i was tagged by the lovely @clandestinegardenias!! thank you!
Last Song: I-E-A-I-A-I-O by System of a Down! i've been branching out of my heavy metal rut of the last 6 months, but System of a Down still slaps really hard.
Favorite Color: hmmmm i really like lush jewel tones, so i think i have to go with like a deep burgundy right now, but the green of spring vegetation in full sun is a very, very close second
Currently Watching: well. i'm in the middle of a The Terror rewatch right now (again....) but the literal last thing I just watched was the IndyCar Grand Prix in Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA. but in terms of new shows, i'm not watching new stuff rn.
Last Movie: Mad God. what a fucking trip that film is. jesus. stop-motion horror film. visually gorgeous. disgusting. it was my second time watching it, and it was again really gross and not super linear and 100% up my alley. it was so bizarre, but i am CAPTIVATED by the music (since there is no dialogue; it's only music and sfx) and i want to write a paper on it so so sososo badly.
Currently Reading: currently juggling Captain Crozier: Last Man Standing, Les Miserables, and The Wager! They're all good in their own respects, but very very different from one another, as well. The Crozier bio is a little bit lighter than I was expecting, The Wager more narrative than I was expecting, and Les Mis thus far has just been slow, but i'm in the early pages for everything but the Crozier biography, so i'm still getting used to them. Also I started Persuasion by Jane Austen last month, but haven't gotten very far yet.
Sweet, Spicy, or Savory? they all have their place, but i have such a bad sweet tooth. it trumps almost everything for me. i love sugar.
Relationship: single! i've been single since like.... my sophomore year of high school? and i'm halfway through my master's now, so it's been.... i think i'll have been single for a decade exactly this year, on my birthday. but also i'm extremely aromantic so. that does contribute to that, lmao
Current Obsession: oh it's definitely The Terror. Very much so. but IndyCar is also a quiet sports obsession of mine and i am starting to get In The Weeds for it this year. i deliberately chose to pay more attention after the 500 this year, but i've been meaning to follow the full season for a few years now, and it's been a blast! really nice to watch tbh. it's fascinating stuff, and one of the only sports i can really, truly sink my mental teeth into. also i have been crocheting like mad recently, bc it keeps me entertained and Makes Things!
Last Googled: tire strategy and regulations in IndyCar races, the differences in those regulations between oval and road courses, and the literal difference in composition between alternate and primary tires. very cool stuff. to me, at least, lmao
Currently Working On: jotting down ideas for the next two terror fics i want to work on/sketching out the plots and adaptations for both of them, getting fully trained at my job, and like 3 separate crochet projects. i have. a very scattered brain. also mentally gearing up for my second year of my master's, which is frightening, considering that i have to Write A Thesis soon lmao
oh lordt i don't know if i have 9 people to tag, but i'll tag a few: @imwritesometimes, @jbloopers, @sweetenby, @silkenbutterfly7 - if any of you want to participate, please do!
