dead reckoning
✧ dead reckoning: finding yourself bothered by somebody's death more than you would have expected, even if they were only an abstract presence in your life.
The mountain path was gorgeous in the late autumn, crisp air dense with the sicksweet scent of leaves fallen to the earth. They crunched beneath her horse's hooves, painting the trail behind her with a waving, patterned blanket of golds, yellows, of red.
She had not thought that she would have found herself in Bern again so soon after the end of it all, after the battle with the dragon, after putting down Nergal. There had been such immense relief, the tight joy that squeezed at all of their hearts – as though they could not have believed their good fortune, to make it through to see the other side.
It was still so surreal to her, the dizzying course that her life had taken, shuttling her forth to experiences and lands so foreign that she had almost forgotten what had set her on her path to begin with.
Dismounting stirred the leaves at her feet, snapping the twigs that lay just underneath with a crackle that raked across the silence of the little hamlet she had come across.
No. Come across not by happenstance, but sought out.
It was...empty. She had known that it would be, but there was a part of her that wanted to see for herself, to set her own eyes upon the waste that had been laid upon her behalf. If either of these facts confirmed – that it had been done, and that it had been done for her – was supposed to calm her heart, then it failed.
Lyn's fingers trembled, curling into fists the farther her footsteps took her into Taliver territory. There was a part of her, the vicious, snarling beast in her heart that so few had the stalworthy spirit to face and acknowledge, that flickered images of their final moments before her eyes, the shock rimming their eyes in white and the screams trembling upward in the air, heard by none but each other and their mighty intruder.
The crunch beneath her foot came more delicate to her ears, brought her up short as she drew her step back, knelt down to brush aside the carnage of leaves to find a small, crumpled doll, the length of its tiny blade snapped beneath her step.
Lyn traced her fingertips thoughtfully over the shape of the thing, uncertain of the tug of her heartstrings – had they children? Had they families, children borne of the women stolen for generations of their brutality? Had Wallace - ?
Brow furrowed as she lifted the little toy up, the prick of rattan against her fingers, and she felt the lick of flames course through her breast anew.
No. This was no Taliver child's toy. This was the craftsmanship of Sacae – it may or may not have been Lorca, but it was kin to her all the same.
When her footsteps drew her to what seemed to be the center of their hamlet, she knelt – no town and no camp, somehow, but clearly an area theirs and lived in; however disgusting she found the notion, this was their home. It took her a moment of steady breathing to quiet her mind, enough to set her hands to practiced tasks – digging incense and bundles of pine and sage from her pack, the wineskin, small carved figurines, and arranging them before her. She considered each with a heavy sincerity, not speaking the words of rite as she had when she had buried the bodies of her people, but with an intensity that tightened her throat as she lit the incense, the pine and the sage, and scattered them to ash before her.
Gently, Lyn doled out portions of the wine into small puddles amongst the ash, taking a careful, thoughtful swig from the skin herself before setting it down, her heartbeat pounding a baleful drum melody in her gut as she, with finality she laid the souls of her people to rest.
Her hands shook as she retrieved the vial from where it had rested, secured and heavy in her satchel, radiating such intent that she had been afraid it might have eaten through the glass, through the cloth and leather of her pack, even the flesh of her horse's haunches.
She wasn't sure what had been in it, could scarcely recall when she had asked Canas for it and had not thought to listen when he had begun to detail every ounce of darkness that he had allowed to seep into it – did not know if it was magical, or if it was merely the corrosive forces of Mother Earth herself, or if it was some unholy marriage of the two.
It was, he had assured her, as vile as he could fathom to make it.
Her eyes flicked over the liquid inside, creeping up and down the sides of the vial with the motion of her hand before she broke the seal, the acrid stink burning her nose as the air rushed in and met with the waiting malintent of the poison's surface.
A quick breath – in, out – and she raised her arm parallel to the earth.
"I come to you in challenge, as leader of the Lorca, the people who you have so wronged," she announced to the open air, her breath curling in mist at the chill in the air. "I come to you with my blade and my heart bared, and I will not leave until I have satisfaction."
The challenge was never meant to be metaphor, and she grit her teeth around the final word, jerking her chin up.
"For what you have done, you will never know the kind hand of Father Sky, never wrap in the warm embrace of Mother Earth, and your spirits will be condemned to wander in perpetuity," she continued, fighting as her throat tightened, a tremulous vein weaving its way into her voice. "I do not have the offerings of the noble dead for you, only the shame that you have brought – to yourselves, to your families, and to those who carry your blood forward. A thousand curses upon you, those who haunt this land, the Taliver!"
Briefly, she saw the broad, whiskery smile of her father, his proud leathery face creasing with his kindness for her – she saw flickering before her the vibrancy of her mother's eyes, those eyes that she carried herself, the eyes that she had carried forward from her father...
Her hand tipped, the offering she had brought to the fallen Taliver sloshing to the side -
"Lady Lyndis. If you truly wished revenge upon them, you should be happy. Hatred can be strength. On the plains, you needed that strength to survive. But left too long, hatred can twist and consume you."
And, unbidden, she saw her granduncle's face. Proud, in his way, long and bearing the noble features of the royal family of Caelin – so alike his brother in structure, but their hearts polar opposites. She had not been there, when Lundgren had cursed his brother to a long, slow death, but she felt the burn of indignation as it was happening, the visceral hate that charred her innards.
When she blinked, the world misted, her hand shaking terribly now, wracked with the sob that she could not voice – whether out of pride, or out of pain, she could not decide.
But she could not bring herself to do it, to salt this field with the cruelty that had been shown to her – to her people, those closest to her heart, once and again.
"There is no kindness left in this world for you - !" The rapidity that the strength of her voice deteriorated shocked her, and Lyn ground her jaw tighter, willing the conviction of her rage to carry her forward as it always had, but...
"You do not deserve this - !"
She could not decide who she spoke to, then, her voice warping around the words until she brought the vial close to her chest and crumpled forward into weeping, her tears dripping down her face to speckle the ground, to mingle with the wine and the ash that she had scattered there, that evaporated into the air and seeped into the earth.
Was it they, those who had earned the hatred of the peoples who they had burnt and pillaged, who did not deserve her kindness – or was it she, last borne of those peoples, whose heart still beat in her chest in spite of all those who had challenged her, who had seen the fallen of her loved ones and decided that she would be the final punctuation on Caelin, on the Lorca?
She who did not deserve to bear the weight of a revenge unattainable?

Tri-Klops' Visor Re-design 2
1. Original 200x. 2. Short hair. 3. Long hair, braided.
4. Long hair, ponytail, bandanna with circlet, non-rotating. 5. Veil, visor with gemstone eyes, rotating. 6. Mask, circlet with three glass/gemstone plate eyes, non-rotating.
7. Veil, mask, visor with gemstone eyes, rotating. 8. Veil, mask with chains and gemstone eye, non-rotating. 9. Mask with glass/opal/moonstone eye, skeleton hands, chains, non-rotating.
10. Long hair, visor, standing rotating circlet with three gemstone eyes. 11. Hood and visor, non-rotating. 12. Long hair, hood, skeleton hands, glass/opal/moonstone eye.
Headcanons:
I do not like Tri-Klops' Icons of Evil comic, but it did contain an interesting tidbit - that Keldor enchanted the visor to keep Tri-Klops subservient. I expanded on the idea and made the visor a kind of slave collar, magically enchanted to prevent Tri-Klops from ever deceiving or betraying his master. Obviously that would become clear to Tri-Klops at some point, so now he's searching for an opportunity when he can free himself from his thralldom. (Obviously he can't just take it off and throw it away, perhaps it is permanently locked to him, or if it's removable he is magically compelled to put it on again, as well as repair it should it break. The only way to break the enchantment is to destroy the visor completely.) The visor can therefore be either a piece of machinery, or magical.
It also makes Tri-Klops much more ambiguous, a wild-card.
Another thought that stuck with me is making it look somewhat crown-like. I imagine that, while Skeletor is the Supreme Overlord of his realm, his lieutenants act as lords of their respective spheres. Evil-Lyn is the Witch Queen of Eternia; Beast Man would be Lord of Beasts; Mer-Man is the King of the Seas, and so on. If I were to re-design them all I would implement some kind of regal symbolism in them to show their status ... and add some appearance of power and influence to Skeletor's court. Tri-Klops' visor therefore has a bit of a crown element, whatever the role you place him in; Forge Master of Snake Mountain, Lord of the Blade, Spy Master, Skeletor's Chief Advisor ... (It also adds that Dark Souls-vibe that I like.)
Anyway, pick and combine the features you like the best, and gimme some suggestions ;)

as the moon, so the sun
The Sword of Spirits had not been her birthright.
When her father had pressed a sword into her small hands for the first time, it had been a regular iron sword that you could buy anywhere. Whether her father had traded for it in Bulgar or bought it from a traveling merchant, she didn't know. All that mattered to her is that with a sword of her own, she could learn how to fight, how to defend her tribe. She did not need a special blade to do that.
Even after the loss of her tribe, she did not need a special blade to avenge them.
An iron sword and a trainee tactician by her side were all she had at the start of her journey. They were then joined by two knights looking not for Lyn, Hassar's daughter, but for Lyndis, Madelyn's daughter, to bring her back to Caelin as its heir. One lone traveler became two. Then two became four.
All four of them carried either iron weapons or none at all when they left Bulgar. Before leaving the land of her birth for the first time, Lyn directed her small band to a humble altar to pray for safe passage. For the first time in her life, she would leave the plains that had raised her to make the trek across the mountains to Lycia. She would pray for the spirits' protection on this journey so far away from the only home she had ever known.
The spirits had grander plans than a mere blessing, though.
"Ah. Hm… It’s the power of the spirits. Lyn, they have looked into your soul, and they call out to you.”
The priest at the temple said something strange when she placed her hand on the sword enshrined in the altar. She sought the spirits' blessing, but never did she think the legendary blade would respond to her in this way. She was not anyone special. She was the daughter of a massacred tribe and heir to a territory she had never even seen before.
A single iron sword was the only belonging she had to her name and it hadn't been enough to protect what she held dear.
“You are its rightful owner. You are to wield the Mani Katti. I never dared hope that I might meet the wielder of the Mani Katti in my life. I am indeed fortunate to see your sword reach your hands."
Perhaps the most famous blade in all of Sacae, behind only Hanon's bow in terms of notoriety, the Mani Katti felt as if the hilt had been crafted in the perfect mold of her hand. It felt like a limb she hadn't even realized she was missing until now, a comfortable weight that just felt right.
The iron sword her father had given her was a sword, but Mani Katti was her sword.
Even as their tiny group grew in size to fourteen people, Mani Katti remained at her side. A year later, when they split apart and then regrouped under a different banner, Mani Katti stayed by her side as faithfully as the moon in the night sky. Across the continent and to the ends of the Earth, the same sword hung at her waist.
When people spoke of her years down the line as one of the people who had traveled with Eliwood and Hector, they would describe her as a woman of Sacaean descent with hair and eyes as green as the grass of her homelands and the Sword of Spirits by her side. Even as the years passed and the exact details about that non-traditional lady became hazy in the annals of time, the image of a woman of the plains with a sword at her side would endure.
What many did not realize, though, was that she had another sword, equally as beloved as Mani Katti.
When the Dragon's Gate had opened, the Archsage himself had handed her a second sword: “A spirit-inhabited sword, the partner of the Mani Katti. This is the Sol Katti.”
If Mani Katti was the moon, then its sister sword was the sun. Gleaming and radiant, she could tell the raw power infused in its blade just touching its hilt and feeling its weight. It mattered not that it wasn't one of the legendary weapons like the Archsage had prepared for Eliwood and Hector, not when she had connected so deeply with Mani Katti in the first place.
She hadn't even known that Mani Katti had a partner, but perhaps in that moment she had finally understood why a blade of hidden heritage had called out to her. Two swords, so different and yet so alike, who could understand them better than Lyn?
But for all its power, Sol Katti was meant for killing dragons. In a world where the Dragon's Gate had been closed for good, there was no need for such a sword to exist. Once again, Sol Katti would fade out of the collective memory of those who were not there at that final battle, passed down only in mythos.
Those who did remember, however, knew that Lyn kept two swords by her side.
Weapon awakened: Mani Katti > Sol Katti
#⚔️ drabbles#flashing gif //#wc: 790#//intsys is determined to rewrite history but /i/ see you sol katti. i respect you. i know you're lyn's prf and not mulagir#//not including the direct quotes as part of the wc lol#//this is all over the place but WHATEVER its DONE

Undead Lyn AU + FEH Unit Concept
Sometime after leaving Caelin to the care of Marques Hector, Lady Lyndis would venture to find her friend that she had found on the wayside once upon a time. She would travel across Elibe, but no matter where she looked, her friend was nowhere in sight and no one seemed to know what became of them. Regardless, Lyn continued her search, leaving behind Elibe and would search across several worlds. At an unknown point, death would claim her after succumbing to the fatal wounds she sustained from an ambush. But she wouldn't rest. No matter what, she wanted to see her friend again, no... She had to see them again... The Sacaen's mutilated and defiled corpse stirred, materializing ghostly limbs where her arms had originally been cut off, a new blade materializes to the opposite side of the Mani Katti and Sol Katti she's kept on her for so long, and so, her journey resumed once more. But eventually, she would forget why she strayed so far from her homeland, her world, and would be reduced to a phantom husk, haunting areas that reminded her of the plains, killing anyone unfortunate enough to run into her. People would call her “The Wind Scarred Wraith”, wielding a blade that harvested the souls of all she slayed, and though her eyes remained shut, some could feel a faint sense of sadness from her, as if she's still desperately trying to remember what she had forgotten, what was missing from her now hollow "afterlife"... ============================================================ Lyn Wind Scarred Wraith A Sacaen noblewoman that wandered the Outrealms searching for her long lost friend. She never gave up in her search, but eventually she forgot why she was wandering in the first place. Appears in Fire Emblem: Awakening. Sword - Infantry Weapon - Reaping Katti [Mt. 16, Rng 1] Accelerates Special Cooldown (-1). If unit's HP ≥ 25%, grants +7 Atk/Spd during combat and also, when unit deals damage to foe during combat, restores 7 HP to unit. Special - Harvesting Winds [Cooldown 3] Boosts damage by 30% of unit's Spd and heals by 40% damage dealt. Passives A - Distant Solo A/S B - Persistent Hunter Inflicts Spd/Def-4 on foe during combat. If a skill compares unit's Spd to a foe's or ally's Spd, treats unit's Spd as if granted +7. If unit's Spd > foe's Spd, reduces damage from attacks during combat and from area-of-effect Specials by percentage = difference between stats x 5 (max 50%). Neutralizes effects that prevent unit's follow-ups and guarantees foe's follow-ups. C - Fatal Blow After combat, inflicts【Deep Wounds】and deals 7 damage to foe and foes within 2 spaces of target after combat. ============================================================= This was an old concept I shared with friends a year or so back that I came back to revitalize. Amusingly even with the state of FEH’s meta, I’m still holdin’ myself back when it comes to how much shit I put in my unit concepts lol The AU itself was made from a dream I had where I was in some unknown world, didn’t seem to be Elibe, and out in the fields was Lyn who would start chasin’ after me anytime I got near her, but would never pursue beyond the plains and forest area. Like FFXV’s Gilgamesh, she was missin’ both arms, but was able to materialize ghostly ones to handle her weapons. I distinctly recalled that her eyes were actually missin’ but the eyelids were shut too, and she never seemed to utter a single word. It was pretty unnervin’ to say the least tho, I dunno what happened for her to wound up in that state, but I couldn’t help but feel as sad as I was scared... Anyway, that’s all, I hope you enjoyed this. I had wrote up dialogue for her, but maybe she’s better off silent to add to the fear factor... Also, she would count as both a FE7 and FE13 unit since she also wears her Swordmaster outfit from her DLC Einherjar self in Awakening!

P5T OST Announced!
Yesterday, ATLUS held their pre-TGS media briefing, and while they showed P5T’s opening to attendees, they haven’t posted it yet.
That aside, there was also the announcement of the OST, available on launch day, both on CD and streaming! We also got the full track list, which has been translated by Persona Central.
Excluding the CD-exclusive demos and outtakes, the game contains 102 tracks, which is less than vanilla’s 110, but far more than Strikers’ 45, and seems to contain only 3 remixes of vanilla/Royal tracks. Furthermore, Disc 5 features Repaint Your Heart, and includes a very promising track name that probably alludes to Akechi’s confidant.
The list is below the cut, and I’ve left the translated titles in italics to separate those possibly inaccurate translations from the song titles originally in English.

Chapter 13: Light (Section 2)
"Wow… so this is a Legendary Weapon?" Hector said at first sight of Durandal, the Blazing Blade, moved by its shining light.
After Roland disappeared, a sword appeared upon the shrine. It was the Legendary Weapon the Little Hero Roland himself had used.
"...It's strange. This must be the first time I've seen it, yet I feel as if I have seen it before…" Lyn was enraptured by the blade, so beautiful it looked as if it had been polished several times.
It was nearly as wide as it was long, making it look quite heavy.
This first time he held it, Eliwood worried whether or not he would be able to wield it, but it felt just right, as if it was a sword he'd used for decades…
It must have been because the soul of Roland himself chose Eliwood as its worthy owner. There was no other explanation for it.
"...With this, I can fight even Nergal! Let's go, to the Dragon's Gate!"
But just then… as if it was trying to tell Eliwood and the others something, Durandal's blade started glowing faintly.
"The sword… is emitting a light… Be careful, everyone! Something's coming!" Eliwood shouted.
The light pointed in a single direction. Everyone's eyes followed it as if they were hypnotized by it.
"What…?!"
"Is that… a dragon?!"
At the end of the light was another large ball of light. When it disappeared, a dragon with light green scales appeared from within, looking directly at them.
At this unexpected appearance of a dragon, Hector reflexively shouted, "Impossible! What is a dragon doing here…?!"
"Stand down, everyone!" Eliwood raised Durandal and stood in front of all his friends to protect them.
The dragon was moving straight towards him.
Anxiety and fear welled up deep inside of his heart. As if to cut it all up and make it go away, Eliwood jumped at the dragon approaching him and swung Durandal down at it.
The dragon emitted a crazed shriek, then it's massive body fell to the ground, causing a large shockwave.
"Are you alright, Eliwood?!" Hector asked.
"Yeah… my body moved on its own, as if it was being guided by the sword…"
"The Blazing Blade was forged to slay dragons… When one wields its power, nothing is impossible. But this ice dragon… it can’t be…" A possibility formed in the back of Athos' mind.
The instant it dawned on him, all of the color drained from the archsage's face.
"What's wrong, Lord Athos?" Eliwood asked.
"No…"
"Allow me to answer that question for you." Nergal cut in.
"Nergal, you fiend!" Eliwood shouted, and raised Durandal towards the dark druid appearing before him, shrouded in darkness.
Lyn and Hector also put a hand on each of their weapons, and glared at Nergal.
But Nergal ignored them and said, "Ninian is no longer of any use to me, so I have come to exchange her." He raised his arm and shot out a ray of light, where Nils appeared, who was supposed to be with the convoy.
"Nils!"
"It is no use. He will not awaken for some time. I shall finish my plans with Nils, as a replacement for Ninian."
…She would no longer be of any use to him.
…He needed a replacement for Ninian.
Nergal's words sparked a violent reaction from within Eliwood. "Damn you! What have you done with Ninian?!"
"I have done nothing. It is you who has done something to her, Eliwood."
"What…?" Eliwood stared at Nergal, unable to comprehend what the villain was saying.
"Eliwood, haven't you ever wondered? Why I need the siblings to open the Dragon's Gate…? Why it must be Ninian and Nils…? The answer is simple. The Dragon's Gate cannot be opened by humans. Only those who are not human possess the ability to open the gate… Only dragons."
"...What…?" That thought crossed Eliwood's mind.
He could not accept it. He shook his head, trying to make it go away.
Nergal laughed mockingly at him before continuing, "Poor girl. She was fooled by my honeyed words, and passed through the gate… Unable to return, she wandered the land to flee and avoid helping me… Only to be killed by the one she loved in the end!"
"What… are you talking about…"
'It can't be!' Eliwood screamed in his head.
"Have you guessed wrong? Or can you just not accept it? Then I shall tell you, Eliwood. The ice dragon lying over there… The beast you killed yourself…"
'No! No! No! No!' He repeatedly denied it over and over again.
But then Nergal said, "That is Ninian. The girl who loved you. The girl you swore to protect. Though she returned to her dragon form and lost her human memories… she continued to think only of you, and came here… The very girl who died by your hand!"
"...Ah…" Eliwood looked numbly at the ice dragon he slew.
Its chest was sliced open, and its body convulsed, signaling it was on the verge of death.
"Yes, look at her! She is mustering up the last of her strength to return to her human form. I think now is your only chance to say goodbye. Though there is no longer anything you can do to help her."
Just as Nergal said, the fallen ice dragon - Ninian - was enveloped in a pale light, her giant body was slowly becoming smaller and smaller.
Finally, the light took on human form.
The moment his eyes saw it was her, Eliwood's words of denial were violently crushed, and in their place, he was consumed by an anger even he himself could not control.
"Damn you, Nergal…" Eliwood swung Durandal at Nergal, but he had no chance at landing an attack while overcome by his anger.
Nergal slipped into darkness and easily dodged the attack, then reappeared in front of Eliwood, and said as if he was casting a curse, "It was not me, Eliwood, but you! You killed her! You…!"
"Grr… Ahhhhhhh!!!!" Having such a truth that he could not change shoved in his face made Eliwood utterly lose himself. "I…! I…!"
'If this drives me to insanity right now, then… then…’
The moment that thought crossed his mind in his attempt to escape from his sadness and the sin he had committed, Eliwood heard a faint voice reach his ears.
"Lord… Eliwood…"
"...Ninian?!"
Ninian had finally fully returned to her human form and regained her consciousness.
Eliwood rushed over to her. "Ninian! Ninian!"
"Lord… Eliwood."
"Ninian… please… don't die… I… I don't know what I would do…" Eliwood said, his words barely coherent as he held back the warm tears forming in the corners of his eyes.
'However much she may hate me, I can't change it… I… I deserve it…'
He had betrayed everything. Her trust, his promise, their love. He blamed himself over and over again for it.
'No matter how hateful her words towards me might be… it's only natural that she would feel that way…' He thought as he cradled her body.
But her words defied his expectations.
"Thank goodness…"
"Huh…?"
"Thank goodness… you're safe… Lord Eliwood…"
"Ninian…"
She spoke not words of resentment, nor blame or hatred, but smiled softly.
Eliwood stared in utter shock at her calm expression.
"..Lord… Eliwood. Please… protect… this…land…"
"Nin… ian. Ninian? You can't… Please, answer me… There's still so much I have to tell you… You… can't…"
Before Eliwood could tell her, Ninian's life was cut short.
"Niniaaaaaaaan!!!!" He screamed, still holding her body, unable to accept her death.
Nergal shouted at him mockingly, "It is over! Now you will wait for the end of this world, trembling in fear in the shadows of the dragons!"
"I won't let you! Take this, my greatest power!!" A red torrent shot out from Athos' outstretched hands.
The swirling flames, burning bright and scorching everything in their path with a thunderous roar, engulfed Nergal's body.
They rose into a fiery pillar that stretched to the heavens, and covered the surrounding area in thick smoke.
But when it cleared, and Nergal reappeared, only his left hand was burned. All it took for him to withstand the mighty flames was for him to sacrifice one hand.
"Anima magic's flames of hellfire, Forblaze… I would expect nothing less from you, Archsage Athos! However… you are no longer any match for me! Just look! Even with one of the Legendary Weapons, you cannot even inflict one serious wound upon me! Ha ha… ha ha ha! Ha ha ha ha ha ha!" Nergal's loud laughter echoed through the air.
Athos growled in frustration. "...Grr…"
"How pitiful you are, Athos! However, I will retreat here for now, to show my respect for the great person you once were... And because five hundred years ago…we were once friends who walked the same path towards the same goal…" Nergal vanished, leaving that curious bit of information behind.
All everyone left behind felt was the despair experienced when one has stood before an enemy too great for themselves to face.
"What are we to do…? Not even the Legendary Weapons can defeat him, can they?" Hector muttered, utterly dumbfounded. Even his expression darkened, despite always being so bold and dauntless that he did not flinch before any enemy.
Just then…
"...Uh…"
"Nils! You're awake! Are you alright?"
"...Ninian! …Ninian. Ninian?! Where is she?!" Nils began to search for his sister the moment he awoke.
He'd lost consciousness when Nergal tried to take him, but his bond with his sister was so great that he always felt her energy. When it suddenly vanished, it immediately worried him.
"...Nils… I'm… sorry…" Eliwood said to him in a small voice.
The moment he saw his sister in Eliwood's arms, Nils took it to mean they had been able to safely rescue her. But Eliwood's words, and more significantly, the sight of the large, gaping wound that traveled down her body from her right shoulder, made Nils realize what had happened to her.
"Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!" He wailed in a despair darker than darkness itself.
☆
Ninian was dead.
It was a fact no one could reverse, and a reality none could accept.
Taking the heartbroken Eliwood and mourning Nils with them, the army followed Hector's proposal and first returned to Ostia.
Inside the most well fortified castle town in all of Lycia, they rested their exhausted bodies and started discussions to decide what they should do next.
As they talked…
"...All of you have a right to know…" Athos said, and began to reveal everything he knew about Nergal.
"...I met Nergal five hundred years ago, in the Nabata Desert. He was the same as I, a man fascinated with the truths of this world."
Both Athos and Nergal were equals in strength and knowledge. The two were fast friends, and together, they could solve all of the mysteries of this world… or so they thought.
The reason that resulted in their split was a disagreement in opinion on their greatest and what could be considered their final discovery.
"While roaming the Nabata Desert, we discovered a curious village… To our disbelief, both humans and dragons… were living there together in cooperation."
"Humans and dragons? Can… live together?"
At Hector's question, Athos nodded and said,
"At first, we did not believe our eyes either. But it did truly exist."
"That's… amazing."
Athos saw dragons with his very eyes. Some resembled those he had fought as one of the eight legends, and others did not. They had all lived peacefully with humans since long ago.
"They were those who hated the idea of fighting against humans, and fled to the Nabata Desert during the Scouring. They wished to live out of the public eye, so Nergal and I put up a magic barrier. We created an oasis, and… they invited us to live with them."
Life there was very calm and fulfilling. At some point, the village had come to be called Arcadia, a peaceful place for lost travelers.
And so, Nergal and Athos started to live in this Arcadia.
"...We became absorbed in the dragon's knowledge. We hungrily studied their language and history. One hundred years went by, then another… Time passed in the blink of an eye, and… our ways of thinking gradually went in two different directions."
"...How so?"
"I… wanted to spread the dragon's knowledge to others, and someday expand Arcadia."
"And Nergal?"
"He wanted to use the dragon's knowledge… to steal quintessence from other living beings, and discover ways to increase his own strength."
It was a frightening thought.
When they realized what Nergal was doing, Athos and Arcadia's dragon elders argued passionately for him to stop. But in his lust for power, he would not listen to them, and absorbed himself in his study of the forbidden magics. He first started with small animals, then moved on to larger ones, from dogs to horses… when his targets shifted to humans, Athos banded together with Arcadia's villagers and defeated Nergal.
"Or so we thought… Nergal narrowly escaped death, and fled to Bern… He gathered power gradually, so that we would not find him…"
Nergal used a great amount of quintessence to create puppets he called morphs to do his bidding. They took on physical appearances that were attractive to humans, and also possessed intelligence that surpassed humans'... Eliwood's army had seen them on many occasions.
Ephidel and Sonia were two such examples.
They had black hair, pale white skin… and lips so red they looked as if they were painted with blood. …But what left the greatest impression of all were their glittering gold eyes…
Athos paused to breathe a sigh, then continued, "...To create morphs is an act of blasphemy against the gods. Once Nergal could act using the morphs, his power was too great for me to defeat him. His next target after humans… was the dragon's quintessence…
"There was no doubt in my mind he was targeting Arcadia. I conjured a sandstorm to hide the village, and waited in the underground ruins… to fight him. I thought that even if I could not win, I could sacrifice myself to cripple him… then lure him into the desert, where he would reach his end…"
"...But Nergal never came, did he?"
"He did not. I do not know how he did it, but… he beckoned the siblings from the other side of the Dragon's Gate. Now, he… is attempting to bring even more, many more, dragons to this land. The final hope is the powers of the remaining Eight Legends. It will take too much time for us to gather them all ourselves. I will now go to the Shrine of Seals, and tell Bramimond everything. We must borrow his strength…"
Having heard the rest of the story, Eliwood made his decision. "We will go to the Dragon's Gate."
"That may be a good idea. Even if we cannot hold our own against Nergal himself, we can weaken his forces."
"Yeah, it's not like us to just wait around!"
Boh Hector and Lyn agreed with Eliwood's proposal.
Eliwood's sadness over Ninian's death and his feelings of regret for the sin he had committed still raged within his heart. But falling into the depths of that despair would not bring Ninian back. What was more important was the fact that letting Nergal be would only increase the number of people feeling the same sadness as him.
The sight of Eliwood, having vowed to continue fighting, as well as Hector and Lyn supporting him, made tears of nostalgia well up in Athos' eyes.
"...You are all… so much like Roland… Ha ha… to think that something could surprise even me, at my age…" Memories flooded his mind of a certain member of the Eight Legends he fought the dragons with one thousand years ago.
"To change a predetermined fate… takes tightly knit bonds. …Go, young ones. Press onwards, towards the Dragon's Gate."
Athos said to the three, then turned directly to Eliwood and asked, "Eliwood, what did you do with Durandal?"
"...It's here." Whenever he unsheathed it, it made him relive what he had done to Ninian.
"I want to cast a spell on it to try and make it even stronger. Do you mind if I take it for a bit?"
"Not at all."
Athos took Durandal from Eliwood, and said to remind him, "...Eliwood, I understand how you feel. But… without this weapon, we cannot harm Nergal… You know that, right?"
"...I do. Next time I wield it… I will not falter." Eliwood said as he stared at his sword hand.
