Concept: Media and Black Popular Culture
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/13/style/the-original-renegade.html
Black culture is popular culture. Looking at the social media platform TikTok, this article highlights how many of the popular dances on TikTok, like Renegade, are stolen from young Black creators. The original Renegade dance was created by 14-year old Jalaiah Harmon in September 2019 using K Camp’s Song “Lottery” as the music. When she first posted the video she had received 13,000 likes. However, TikTok Influencer Charli D’Amelio took a video of her performing the dance without accrediting Jalaiah. The Renegade dance jump started Charli’s career as she was able to become TikTok famous with a following of 25 million followers. It was not until months later that Jalaiah received credit after appearing in a video with K Camp and doing her Renegade dance. Jalaiah finally got acknowledgements for her dance by performing at the NBA All-Star half time and Charli apologizing for not giving credit. However, there are still so many other cases throughout the media where Black creators and innovators are having their labor taken without any accreditations.
