My animation teacher designed all the original Spyro games and I wonder what his whole take on it would be tbh. The designs translated well to the ps1 limits but something about just rendering every little shine in the eye or making some of the npcs/enemies look more doofy is just so..weird I get this uncanny feeling. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought it was kind of off.
Charles Zembillas??? damn im jealous!
i think as far as cartoony 3D is concerned for me it’s finally kinda starting to reach a point where i can go “yeah that looks pretty nice”. with the spyro remake i think any issues with excessive shine etc. were probably unintentional (like Sgt. Byrd’s super shiny eyes, i haven’t noticed that on any other character yet) overall i think it looks pretty good and you can tell that the people who made them have a lot of experience with this kind of stylistic 3D, but im not an animator or know anything but hte basics about 3D modelling so maybe i’m just easy to please lol
my main biggest beef w/ the art direction is definitely all about nostalgia, like the actual designs often don’t resemble hte originals at all
its like they didn’t even look at the originals, especially Zembillas’ work. actually that’s literally what they did because there was a small fandom outrage before the games were released when during an interview Zembillas expressed regret that T4B never consulted him on Spyro’s (or probably any other) design at all and well that really really shows in 1 and 2 . there was also a clear attempt to “uglify” the designs for some reason when Spyro was always a cutesy game, as if there’s something wrong with that - it really wasn’t until i got to start the third game where it started feeling like there was an actual attempt at a faithful stylistic recreation and it looks infinitely better to my nostalgic eyes

blackjackvevo replied to your post “please show me ur most favoritest Zenigatas and i will silently judge...”
Ok. The unpopular opinion in comparison to everyone else: manga Zenigata. Original bastard man. Mamo and pink jacket comes close tho.
well u should definitely say it because comic Zenigata from hte original comic series is in fact in my top three all time favoritest Zenigatas
while hte characterisation and relationship dynamic changes they did for the animations tilted cartoon Zeni towards more of a bumbling comic relief often way past the point of actually being funny, the original is hands down the funniest Zeni exactly because he’s not just treated as a screaming speed bump by Lupin but rather a proper adversary who poses a real threat. he’s so goddamn smug and sadistic and uncaring of Lupin’s or his crew’s wellbeing and it’s entirely deserved. i think the Tokyopop translations made him even better honestly because they got so creative with how foul-mouthed he is, i love seeing people go from the cartoons to reading the comic and completely lose their shits because of the way he speaks. i always find myself sprinking in some of that og Zeni sadistic glee into my cartoon Zenigata stuff even tho i love how he’s a big gay softy otherwise becus its just so good and would balance the character out so nicely
when it comes to the visuals he just perfectly encapsulates that gritty, noirish cartoon detective look, something that i honestly feel is often sorely missing in the cartoon Zeni designs. i really love the unique way MP usually outlined his nose, namely by shading the side facing the viewer rather than the one facing away as you’d expect - it’s an effect that hasn’t really been replicated in any of the animation and i think that’s one of the reasons that no cartoon Zenigata design has ever felt like it has truly captured the look of the original just right. i also enjoy his ugly (but apparently expensive) patterned suit jacket he has literally worn since his university days, maybe it was his late dad’s lol
as a final note the way he uses his legs for physical comedy is A++++, i love it when he literally kicks Lupin’s ass and would like to see it in the cartoons, 10/10 and a parrot badge
now Mamo!Zenigata might not be the highlight of the movie for me but there’s something really refreshing about a Zenigata who’s literally out for Lupin’s blood (while also kinda admitting that he wouldn’t want to live anymore either if he wasn’t alive...) i’ve been very 50/50 on how i feel about the inclusion of his daughter and implied wife but i think i am leaning towards liking it just because i think it’s so funny that a character who’s treated as the ultimate anime dad is in fact, a really terrible father when he actually canonically has a child. mamo!Zenigata is basically like green jacket Zeni taken to an absolute extreme with his obsession with Lupin and that’s fun and good
this Zeni’s design was apparently based on the original green jacket one as well (based solely on how some slightly revised green jacket concept art is so often passed off as concept art for this movie) and while it doesn’t really show in the final product, the visuals in this movie are one of the things that elevated it to being one of my absolute fave Lupin animations overall so i enjoy Aoki’s design work on this Zeni too even if it’s not my favorite. i love the sophisticated pale green shirt that adds some color to hte otherwise typical browns and tans of his outfit
finally Mamo!Lupin is explicitly horny for his Zenigata and i think thats absolutely wonderful, this one gets a 10/10
