Omg. It’s about time a dialogue of this nature is brought to a public forum. Growing up as a child into my teens which are very impressionable & developmental years, it seemed the only representation of “Beauty” was “White” & “Light” complexion. It wasn’t till the late ‘90s did I begin seeing otherwise. So for my experience going back to when I auditioned for Disney at the age of 17yr. no matter if I held my own: dancing, singing, & acting... I was disappointed that only “White” or “Light” skinned Blacks were asked to return for a “Call” back. This attitude of “White” or “Light” was more appealing was still very strong even after college in the mid. ‘90s. No matter if I graduated from a very well known Performing Arts program as ASU Lyric Opera Theatre, when I went out into the real world, I only got casted for all Black Productions or Black Reviews: shows like “All Night Strut”, “Stompin’ at the Savoy” & “Ain’t Misbehavin’. One reason why I briefly left the Theatrical Stage was because of the continuous Racism within the Ent. & Theatrical world. This is why, as a performer, I turned to Music, Songwriting, & Producing. Though even in the Recording Industry, I faced the same challenges being mixed raced. But I never gave up because I knew what I’m capable of & one day society will catch up to me as a mixed raced Performer. Now times have finally begun to see the “Light”. Not in skin color, but in being “Fair” & being “Equal”. This report brought tears to my eyes because for decades, I wasn’t comfortable in my own skin to the point of depression. A child should nvr feel that way. Now I’m “Empowered”, “Stronger”, & I’m not going anywhere & no longer allowing “Racism” to stop me from reaching my life goals & dreams! Black is Beautiful! Black is Talented! Black is Strong! Black ain’t going anywhere! No more tears! Just saying.
