Very humbled to be able to present my magazine and these wonderful stories at the AIGA SPOT Showcase last night. The stories told by complete strangers about adversity faced as an Afro-Brazilian inspired me to keep going. I'm extremely thankful for my friends and family who supported me throughout this process and for the best mentor ever who got me to where I am with this project. For those who don't know, I'm originally from Brazil and I am of African descent. I've been in countless conversations with well-versed individuals who admitted to me that they were not aware that Afro-Brazilians existed (literally never heard of the term). With that, I decided to use art to bring awareness to the rich African culture of Brazil. I started a project called: Black in Brazil. I'm currently working on a magazine that contains real Afro-Brazilians and their stories, along with an overview of slavery in Brazil and the incredible African influence on the country's culture. This is by far the most meaningful and purposeful project I’ve worked on. It has helped me understand my roots and appreciate the sacrifices made for me to be where I am.
