A Beginner’s Guide to Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a dynamic martial art that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Known for its emphasis on technique over strength, it’s an excellent choice for individuals of all ages, from young beginners to adults. Whether you’re interested in youth martial arts classes, kids’ self-defense training, or simply learning a new skill, this guide will provide you with the tips and gear essentials to start your BJJ journey.
Tumblr media
Understanding Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
What does BJJ mean:BJJ stands for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, a martial art that was derived from Judo and further developed in Brazil. An emphasis on controlling and submitting opponents through joint locks and chokeholds. Because BJJ relies on technique and strategy, it has become a common inclusion in many children’s self-defense classes and junior BJJ classes.
In fact, many youth martial arts classes include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) in order to help children learn self-discipline, confidence, and problem-solving capabilities. As a rookie, if you understand the philosophy at the heart of the art — that ability, not raw force, is key — it can help ease your entry into this thrilling realm.
Tips for Beginners
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can seem intimidating to begin, but with these tips, we hope to ease the way:
Start with a Positive Mindset
So, come in with a mind that is open and a will to progress in each class. You’re allowed to feel overwhelmed during your initial foray into this new system, but the most important factor is perseverance; the more you practice, the easier it’ll get.
Focus on the Basics
Avoid the temptation to learn advanced techniques. A strong base is made of consistently winning the most fundamental exchanges, like escapes, sweeps, and basic submissions.
Ask Questions
This is where coaches and senior students come to play. If you’re uncertain about a specific technique, be brave enough to ask.
Practice Patience
Progress in BJJ takes time. Even note the little wins like figuring out a certain move or getting out of a tough position.
Consistency is Key
In order to improve, it is important that you attend regularly. And aim for two classes a week so you build muscle memory and can be as great as you were before!
Gear Essentials for Beginners
Having the proper equipment will help guarantee safety and comfort throughout training. Here’s what you will need to begin:
Gi (Kimono)
The gi is the traditional uniform of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Find a light-weight, durable gi designed for BJJ. Make sure it’s fitted, but free to move.
Rash Guard
Tops: While not required, a rash guard slipped under your gi can help prevent mat burn and keep sweat away from your skin.
BJJ Belt
A beginner wears a white belt. As you advance and gain higher levels of skill and knowledge, you will earn belts.
Mouthguard
Especially during sparring, you want to preserve your teeth. Opt for a durable, custom-fitting mouthguard.
Optional Gear
No-Gi Gear: If your academy does no-gi BJJ, you will need athletic shorts and a compression top.
Knee Pads — Helps prevent joint soreness in grappling.
Water Bottle — Hydration is vital during hard training.
Before enrolling kids into junior BJJ lessons, or youth grappling classes, make sure their gear is properly fitted and meets the safety standards.
Frequently Asked Questions and How to Solve Them
If you’re a beginner at BJJ, you’ll come across these problems. Here’s how to tackle them:
Feeling Overwhelmed
Solution: Focus on the class on one or two techniques and work on them at open mat.
Physical Fatigue
Solution: Start with short workouts and gradually build endurance. Mix in some light cardio exercise with your training.
Fear of Sparring (Rolling)
Solution: View sparring as information gathering. Go slowly and pay more attention to using techniques than to “winning.”
Plateaus in Progress
Solution: Accept that plateaus are a normal part of the process. You are up to October 2023, ensure you usually to new techniques and request feedback from mentors.
Injuries
Solution: Pay attention to your body, use good form, and listen to your body for rest and recovery. Many kids’ self-defense programs incorporate lessons on safe grappling techniques to avoid injury.
Finding the Right Academy
Thus the next step you have to take in your jiu jitsu journey is to choose the right academy. Here’s what to look for:
Qualified Instructors
A good teacher is knowledgeable, patient, and relatable. They must have experience with teaching beginners and nurturing a positive atmosphere.
Beginner-Friendly Classes
Now, search for academies that provide dedicated classes for beginners; youth martial arts classes, children’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs, etc.
Community and Atmosphere
The academy ought to be a warm and inclusive place. If the training environment is positive, learning becomes fun.
Trial Classes
Most academies provide a free or discounted class to try out. Make use of these to determine whether it’s a good fit for you or your child.
Conclusion
In this article, I will help you with some beginner tips on starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. By learning the basics, investing in good equipment, and sticking to it, you will grow in confidence, fitness and skills that will transfer off the mat. Youth Grappling classes or junior BJJ lessons offer a great introduction for young beginners.
Whether studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for self-improvement or learning and training as a family, enjoy the journey and take pride in each new accomplishment. Embrace the art and allow it to transform you — one roll at a time.

Teaching and Learning: Tips for Being a Great Training Partner in Jiu Jitsu by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Buffs such as Thomas Czerniejewski
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that relies heavily on the dynamic interaction between training partners. The quality of your training partner can significantly influence your learning experience, progression, and overall enjoyment of the sport. Being a great training partner is not just about skill level but also about fostering a supportive environment that promotes mutual growth and respect. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned practitioner, understanding how to be an effective training partner can enhance your BJJ journey and that of others around you.
A great training partner knows how to balance intensity with control, provides constructive feedback, and remains patient and encouraging. These qualities help in creating a positive training atmosphere where everyone can learn and improve. In this blog, we will explore key tips for being a great training partner in Jiu Jitsu, focusing on communication, adaptability, safety, encouragement, feedback, and patience.
The Importance of Communication
Communication is the cornerstone of any successful training session in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Clear and open communication between training partners helps in understanding each other's goals, limitations, and expectations. Before starting a roll or a drilling session, it is essential to discuss what you want to work on and how intensely you plan to train. This ensures that both partners are on the same page and can train effectively.
During training, verbal and non-verbal cues are equally important. Simple phrases like "Let's slow down" or "Can we try that again?" can make a significant difference in the quality of training. Moreover, non-verbal communication, such as a nod or a gesture, can indicate agreement or understanding without disrupting the flow of the session. By maintaining good communication, you create a collaborative environment that facilitates learning and mutual respect as highlighted by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts like Thomas Czerniejewski.
Adapting to Your Partner’s Skill Level
Being a great training partner means adapting to your partner’s skill level and experience. For instance, when training with beginners, it’s important to focus on helping them grasp basic techniques rather than overwhelming them with advanced moves. Conversely, when training with more experienced practitioners, challenging them appropriately while respecting their abilities is key.
Adapting also involves adjusting your intensity. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu buffs such as Thomas Czerniejewski convey that rolling too hard with a less experienced partner can hinder their learning and potentially cause injury. On the other hand, being too passive with a more advanced partner might prevent them from getting the most out of the session. By being mindful of your partner’s skill level and adjusting accordingly, you contribute to a productive and safe training environment.
Prioritizing Safety and Control
Safety should always be the top priority during any Jiu Jitsu session. As a training partner, it is your responsibility to ensure that both you and your partner remain safe throughout the practice. This involves maintaining control during drills and sparring sessions, avoiding unnecessary force, and tapping out when necessary to prevent injuries.
Control is particularly important during submissions. Applying submissions gradually and giving your partner enough time to tap is crucial. Additionally, being aware of your surroundings and preventing accidental collisions with other pairs on the mat is essential for everyone’s safety. By prioritizing safety and control as emphasized by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts including Thomas Czerniejewski, you build trust with your training partners, which is vital for effective and enjoyable training sessions.
Offering Constructive Feedback
Feedback plays a crucial role in the learning process. As a training partner, offering constructive feedback can help your partner improve their technique and understanding of Jiu Jitsu. However, it is important to deliver feedback in a manner that is helpful and encouraging rather than critical or discouraging.
When offering feedback, focus on specific aspects of the technique that can be improved, and suggest possible adjustments. For example, if your partner is struggling with a guard pass, you might point out a minor adjustment in their grip or posture that could make a difference. Additionally, providing positive reinforcement for what they are doing well helps to build confidence and motivation. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu buffs like Thomas Czerniejewski express that constructive feedback fosters a collaborative learning environment where both partners can grow and develop their skills.
Encouraging Mutual Growth
A great training partner is invested in the mutual growth of both themselves and their partner. This means being genuinely interested in helping your partner improve, even if it means setting aside personal goals during a session. Encouragement and support go a long way in building a positive training environment where everyone feels motivated to push their limits.
Encouraging mutual growth also involves sharing knowledge and experiences. If you have learned a particular technique or strategy that has been effective for you, share it with your partner. This exchange of knowledge not only benefits your partner but also reinforces your understanding of the technique. By prioritizing mutual growth, you create a training atmosphere that is both challenging and supportive, leading to better outcomes for everyone involved.
Exercising Patience and Understanding
Patience is a key virtue in Jiu Jitsu, both in your personal progression and when helping others. Every practitioner learns at their own pace, and as a training partner, it’s important to exercise patience and understanding, especially when your partner is struggling with a particular technique or concept. Avoid showing frustration and instead, offer to break down the technique into smaller, more manageable steps.
Being a great training partner in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is about much more than just technical ability; it involves fostering a positive and supportive environment that promotes mutual learning and growth as mentioned by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts such as Thomas Czerniejewskis. By focusing on effective communication, adapting to your partner’s skill level, prioritizing safety, offering constructive feedback, encouraging mutual growth, and exercising patience, you can significantly enhance both your own and your partner’s training experience. As you develop these qualities, you not only become a better practitioner but also contribute to the overall success and camaraderie of your Jiu Jitsu community. Remember, the journey in Jiu Jitsu is one of continuous learning, and having great training partners along the way makes the experience all the more rewarding.

Introduction
Choosing the right BJJ gi can be a daunting task for beginners, given the numerous options available in the market. A gi is more than just a uniform; it is a critical piece of gear that can impact your comfort, performance, and overall experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. For beginners, selecting a blue gi can be particularly appealing due to its traditional and aesthetic appeal. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the best blue BJJ gis for beginners, considering factors such as material quality, fit, durability, and cost. By the end of this blog post, you will have a clear understanding of which blue gi is best suited for your needs as a novice BJJ practitioner.
Key Factors to Consider When Choosing a Blue BJJ Gi for Beginners
Before diving into specific recommendations, it's important to understand the key factors that should influence your choice of a blue BJJ gi as a beginner. These factors ensure that you select a gi that not only meets your aesthetic preferences but also supports your development in the sport.Bravo BJJ offers high-quality Blue Jiu Jitsu Gi at a discount price, perfect for both beginners and experienced practitioners looking to upgrade their gear. Their blue gi is known for its durability, comfort, and stylish design.
Tumblr media
Material Quality
The quality of the material is paramount when choosing a BJJ gi. Beginners should look for gis made from durable yet comfortable fabrics. Common materials include cotton, pearl weave, and a cotton-polyester blend. Pearl weave is particularly popular due to its balance between durability and lightweight feel. High-quality material ensures the gi can withstand the rigors of training while remaining comfortable to wear.
Fit and Comfort
Fit and comfort are critical for effective training. A well-fitting gi allows for unrestricted movement and proper execution of techniques. Beginners should look for a gi that fits snugly but not too tight, allowing for a full range of motion. Consider the gi's cut, sleeve length, and pant fit, as these aspects contribute to overall comfort. Many brands offer pre-shrunk gis, which helps maintain the fit after washing.
Durability
Durability is essential, especially for beginners who may train multiple times a week. A durable gi can withstand frequent washing and the physical demands of BJJ training. Look for reinforced stitching in high-stress areas such as the collar, sleeves, and knees. A durable gi will save you money in the long run by reducing the need for frequent replacements.
Cost
Cost is a significant factor for beginners who are just starting out in BJJ. While it can be tempting to opt for the cheapest option, investing in a reasonably priced, high-quality gi is advisable. A good gi should offer a balance between affordability and quality, providing long-term value without breaking the bank.
Aesthetic Appeal
For many practitioners, the appearance of their gi is also important. A blue gi is a popular choice due to its traditional and striking look. Ensure that the gi you choose has a colorfast dye that won’t fade quickly after a few washes.
Brand Reputation
Lastly, consider the reputation of the brand. Established brands are more likely to provide high-quality gis that are well-regarded in the BJJ community. Customer reviews and recommendations from instructors can be valuable resources in determining the reliability and quality of a gi.
With these factors in mind, let’s delve into the top blue BJJ gis for beginners.

Washing
Pre-Wash: Always pre-wash your new gi to remove any excess dye and shrink it slightly to fit better.
Cold Water: Wash your gi in cold water to prevent shrinking and preserve the color.
Gentle Cycle: Use a gentle cycle to reduce wear and tear on the fabric.
Mild Detergent: Use a mild detergent that is free of bleach to protect the fabric and color.
Drying
Air Dry: The best way to dry your gi is to hang it up and air dry. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent color fading.
Avoid High Heat: Do not use a high heat setting if you must use a dryer, as this can shrink the gi and weaken the fabric.
Stain Removal
Immediate Attention: Address stains as soon as possible to prevent them from setting.
Stain Remover: Use a stain remover that is safe for colored fabrics to treat stubborn stains.
Spot Cleaning: For small stains, spot clean the area with a gentle detergent and water.
Storage
Dry Environment: Store your gi in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent mold and mildew.
Hang Up: Hang your gi up to keep it from becoming wrinkled and to allow it to air out between uses.
General Tips
Rotate Gis: If you train frequently, consider having more than one gi to rotate between sessions. This allows each gi to fully dry and reduces wear and tear.
Check for Damage: Regularly inspect your gi for signs of wear or damage, such as fraying or loose stitching, and repair them promptly.

FAQs Related to "Which is the Best Blue BJJ Gi for Beginners?"
Q1. Why should I choose a blue BJJ gi as a beginner?
A: Choosing a blue BJJ gi as a beginner can be beneficial due to its traditional appeal and visibility on the mat. Blue gis are commonly used in competitions and help differentiate practitioners. They also often hide stains better than white gis, making them easier to maintain.
Q2. What material should I look for in a blue BJJ gi?
A: As a beginner, look for a gi made from durable yet comfortable materials such as cotton or pearl weave. These fabrics provide a good balance between strength and breathability, ensuring that the gi can withstand rigorous training while keeping you comfortable.
Q3. How should a BJJ gi fit?
A: A BJJ gi should fit snugly but not too tight. It should allow for a full range of motion without excess fabric that could be easily grabbed by an opponent. Ensure that the sleeves and pant legs are the correct length and that the gi jacket closes comfortably.
Q4. What are the best brands for blue BJJ gis for beginners?
A: Some of the top brands for blue BJJ gis for beginners include Fuji, Tatami, Sanabul, Venum, and Elite Sports. These brands are known for producing high-quality gis that offer a good balance of durability, comfort, and affordability.
Q5. How much should I expect to spend on a blue BJJ gi?
A: The cost of a blue BJJ gi can vary, but as a beginner, you can find high-quality gis in the range of $50 to $150. Investing in a good quality gi within this price range ensures durability and comfort without overspending.
Q6. Are there any specific features to look for in a beginner's BJJ gi?
A: Yes, as a beginner, look for features such as reinforced stitching in high-stress areas, pre-shrunk fabric, a comfortable fit, and antimicrobial treatments to reduce odor and bacteria. These features enhance the durability, comfort, and hygiene of the gi.
Q7. How do I maintain my blue BJJ gi?
A: To maintain your blue BJJ gi, wash it in cold water using a mild detergent, and avoid bleach. Air dry your gi to prevent shrinking and color fading. Address stains immediately and store your gi in a dry, ventilated area.
Q8. Can I use my blue BJJ gi in competitions?
A: Yes, blue BJJ gis are commonly used in competitions and are accepted by most BJJ organizations. Always check the competition rules and regulations to ensure your gi meets the required standards.
Q9. How often should I wash my BJJ gi?
A: You should wash your BJJ gi after every training session to maintain hygiene and prevent odor buildup. Regular washing also helps prolong the life of the gi by removing sweat and dirt that can weaken the fabric over time.
Q10. What should I do if my gi shrinks?
A: If your gi shrinks, you can try gently stretching it while it's damp after washing. In the future, wash your gi in cold water and air dry it to prevent further shrinking. Investing in a pre-shrunk gi can also help avoid this issue.
Q11. Is it necessary to have more than one gi?
A: Having more than one gi can be beneficial, especially if you train frequently. Rotating between gis allows each one to fully dry and reduces wear and tear, extending the lifespan of your gear.
Q12. What should I consider when buying a gi online?
A: When buying a gi online, check the size chart provided by the manufacturer, read customer reviews, and ensure the website has a good return policy. This helps ensure you get the right fit and quality.
Q13. Can I train in a gi that's not blue?
A: Yes, you can train in gis of different colors, such as white, black, or other variations. However, it's essential to follow your academy's dress code, as some schools may have specific color requirements for uniforms.
Q14. Are there any specific care instructions for maintaining the color of a blue gi?
A: To maintain the color of your blue gi, wash it in cold water and avoid using bleach or harsh detergents. Air drying in a shaded area rather than direct sunlight can also help preserve the color.
Q15. What should I do if my gi starts to smell despite regular washing?
A: If your gi starts to smell, even after regular washing, you can use an antimicrobial fabric spray or soak it in a mixture of vinegar and water before washing. Ensure it is thoroughly dried after each wash to prevent mold and mildew buildup.

Essential Combat Sports Gear: Your Guide to Safety and Performance
Combat sports are thrilling, physically demanding, and require a specific set of equipment to ensure both safety and performance. Whether you're a seasoned martial artist or a beginner looking to step into the ring, having the right sports gear is crucial. In this article, we will delve into the world of combat sports gear, exploring its essential components and their significance.
The Importance of Quality Combat Sports Gear
Quality sports gear is not just about aesthetics; it plays a pivotal role in safeguarding participants and enhancing their performance. Here's why it matters:
Safety First
The primary function of sports gear is to protect the athlete from injuries. Headgear, mouthguards, and protective cups are designed to minimize the risk of concussions, dental damage, and groin injuries. The right gear can be a literal lifesaver in high-impact sports like boxing, MMA, or Muay Thai.
Performance Enhancement
While safety is paramount, the right sports gear can also improve an athlete's performance. Take boxing gloves, for example. They offer wrist support and cushioning, enabling fighters to punch harder and longer without risking hand injuries. Similarly, specialised footwear with optimal grip is essential in sports like wrestling, providing better control over movements.
Maintenance and Care
Proper care of your sports gear is crucial for both hygiene and longevity. Here are some tips:
Clean Regularly: After every training session, clean and air out your gear to prevent the buildup of bacteria and odour.
Follow Manufacturer Guidelines: Always adhere to the manufacturer's cleaning and maintenance instructions for each piece of equipment.
Replace When Necessary: If you notice significant wear and tear on your gear, especially protective items like headgear and mouthguards, replace them promptly to maintain your safety.
Selecting the Right Combat Sports Gear Retailer
With your knowledge of the essential gear and considerations, it's equally important to know where to buy your sports gear. Here's how to select the right retailer:
Specialisation: Look for retailers that specialise in sports gear. They are more likely to have a wider selection of products and staff who are knowledgeable about the sport. Avoid general sporting goods stores that may not provide the same level of expertise.
Reputation: Research the retailer's reputation by reading customer reviews, seeking recommendations from fellow athletes, and checking for any complaints or issues. A trustworthy retailer will have a history of satisfied customers.
Return Policy: Ensure the retailer has a flexible and fair return policy. This is crucial in case you receive gear that doesn't fit properly or meets your expectations.
Authenticity: Be cautious of counterfeit products, especially when buying online. Authentic gear will provide the protection and performance you need.
Sizing Charts: Retailers should offer detailed sizing charts to help you choose the right size for your gear. Avoid guesswork by measuring yourself accurately and referencing the sizing charts.
The End In combat sports, the right gear is more than just a fashion statement; it's a vital aspect of safety and performance. Whether you're into boxing, MMA, BJJ, Muay Thai, or wrestling, having the appropriate equipment is non-negotiable. From protecting your head to providing essential grip and support, each piece of combat sports gear serves a unique purpose. So, invest in quality gear, care for it properly, and enjoy a safer and more successful journey in your chosen combat sport. Remember, your health and performance depend on it.

Unveiling the Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gis
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that places a strong emphasis on technique, leverage, and ground fighting. The attire worn by practitioners, known as "Gis" (pronounced "gee"), plays a pivotal role in this martial art. In this article, we dive deep into the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gis, exploring their significance, different types, and why choosing the right Gi is essential for both comfort and performance. Whether you're a seasoned BJJ enthusiast or just starting your journey, understanding the nuances of BJJ Gis is crucial.
Tumblr media
The Significance of BJJ Gis
In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Gis serve multiple functions, making them an integral part of the sport:
Uniformity: Gis create a sense of uniformity among practitioners, emphasizing the focus on technique and skill rather than physical attributes.
Grip and Control: The thick, durable fabric of a BJJ Gi provides ample grip and control during grappling and submission attempts. Collars and sleeves are often used strategically by practitioners to control their opponent.
Defense and Strategy: Understanding how to use your Gi defensively can be a key aspect of BJJ strategy. Skilled practitioners can use their Gi to defend against chokes and joint locks.
Hygiene and Etiquette: Gis are designed to be comfortable and durable, and their regular maintenance is essential to maintain hygiene and uphold the traditions and etiquette of the sport.
Types of BJJ Gis
There are several types of BJJ Gis available, each designed with specific purposes and preferences in mind:
Single Weave Gis: These Gis are lightweight and breathable, making them ideal for hot climates or practitioners who prefer a lighter feel. They are often the choice for competition due to their weight advantage.
Double Weave Gis: Double weave Gis are thicker and more durable, offering enhanced resistance to wear and tear. They are favored by those who prioritize longevity and sturdiness.
Gold Weave Gis: Gold weave Gis strike a balance between the lightweight feel of single weave Gis and the durability of double weave Gis. They are a popular choice for many BJJ practitioners.
Pearl Weave Gis: Pearl weave Gis are known for their combination of comfort, strength, and lightness. They are highly versatile and a top choice for many practitioners.
Ripstop Gis: Ripstop Gis are made from a special fabric that is resistant to tears and snags. They are excellent for practitioners who want a lightweight yet durable option.
Choosing the Right BJJ Gi
Selecting the right BJJ Gi is a personal choice that depends on various factors, including your style of play, body type, and personal preferences. Here are some tips to help you choose the perfect Gi:
Size and Fit: Ensure that the Gi fits comfortably and allows for freedom of movement. Follow the sizing guidelines provided by the manufacturer to find your perfect fit.
Material: Consider the material of the Gi, as it affects comfort and durability. Cotton is the most common material, but blends with synthetic fibers can offer added comfort and reduced shrinkage.
Design and Brand: BJJ Gis come in various colors and designs. Some practitioners prefer a traditional look, while others opt for more modern or personalized styles. Choose a design that resonates with you.
Competition Requirements: If you plan to compete in BJJ tournaments, be aware of the specific Gi requirements set by the organizing body. Ensure your Gi complies with these regulations.
Budget: BJJ Gis come in a wide price range. Determine your budget and look for a Gi that offers the best value within that range.
Quality Matters: Holdfast Fight Gear
When it comes to BJJ Gis, quality is paramount. That's why we recommend exploring the collection of BJJ Gis at Holdfast Fight Gear. Their Gis are crafted with meticulous attention to detail, using high-quality materials that balance comfort, durability, and performance. BJJ Training Tips for Beginners
If you're a beginner in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), here are some training tips to help you get started and make progress in your practice:
Tumblr media
Focus on Fundamentals: BJJ has a vast array of techniques, but it’s crucial to establish a strong foundation. Spend ample time learning and mastering the fundamental techniques such as basic positions, escapes, and submissions. These will serve as building blocks for more advanced techniques.
Be Consistent: Regular practice is key to improving in BJJ. Aim to train consistently and make it a part of your routine. Consistency allows you to build muscle memory, improve your reflexes, and develop a better understanding of the art.
Embrace the Learning Process: BJJ is complex and takes time to grasp fully. Embrace the learning process and be patient with yourself. Understand that progress comes gradually, and it’s normal to make mistakes along the way. Learn from each experience and see every training session as an opportunity to grow.
Focus on Technique, Not Strength: BJJ is known for its emphasis on technique and leverage over strength. Rather than relying solely on strength, focus on proper positioning, timing, and execution of techniques. This approach will help conserve energy and allow you to overcome opponents who may be physically stronger.
Develop Your Defense: Defense is a crucial aspect of BJJ. Work on improving your ability to escape from disadvantageous positions, such as mount or side control. By developing solid defensive skills, you’ll be better equipped to survive and counter your opponent’s attacks.
Take Care of Your Body: BJJ can be physically demanding, so it’s essential to prioritize your physical well-being. Warm up adequately before each training session, stretch to maintain flexibility, and listen to your body to avoid overtraining or injuries. Additionally, maintaining a healthy diet and getting sufficient rest will support your overall progress.
Ask Questions and Seek Feedback: Don’t hesitate to ask questions and seek guidance from your instructors and training partners. They can provide valuable insights and corrections to refine your technique. Be open to feedback and actively work on implementing it into your practice.
Spar with Different Partners: Rolling with a variety of training partners is beneficial for your growth in BJJ. Each person has a unique style, skill level, and body type, which will challenge you in different ways. Spar with both higher-ranked and lower-ranked practitioners to gain different perspectives and experiences.
Study Outside of the Mat: Supplement your training by studying BJJ outside of the mat. Watch instructional videos, read books or articles, and analyze matches. This additional knowledge will deepen your understanding and help you develop a more strategic approach to your training.
Enjoy the Journey: Remember to have fun and enjoy the journey of learning BJJ. It’s a challenging and rewarding martial art that offers many benefits beyond self-defense. Embrace the camaraderie with your training partners, celebrate your successes, and keep a positive mindset throughout your training.
By following these tips, you can establish a strong foundation and make progress as a beginner in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs. Stay committed, be patient, and enjoy the process of learning this fascinating martial art.

second BJJ class done.
I learned the name of the takedown we learned on Monday, it was called a near fall takedown. can’t find any videos of it, but I found a video that’s pretty close to one of the variations we did
I also did better at the warm ups today than I did Monday, though I was actually doing them correctly this time around so they were harder and I wasn’t able to do as many reps. thankfully, my instructor doesn’t call me out for not doing all the reps. my favorite warm up we do is called the caterpillar. you start standing up with your legs straight and use your hands to walk yourself down past push up position then tip toe your way back up.
today wasn’t a takedown day (booooo! I wanna throw people around EVERY day). we worked on passing open guard using bullfighter/toreando pass, transition to knee on belly which we worked on for a while and I was abysmal at, and then transitioning to side control from knee on belly. side control my fucking beloved. my legs are too short to do a proper knee on belly on bigger folks.
got absolutely smashed in our “stay on top/escape bottom” drills starting in side control. When my partner had me in side control I couldn’t do SHIT. I almost got out once. good enough for me. but damn, she’s strong. I had an equally hard time staying on top cause she would just roll me over immediately when I was in side control and I didn’t have time to change position. I was actually doing better against the more advanced guy. this girl is just wicked strong and I fear her. she also has hyper mobile joints so some submissions don’t work on her lmfao she’s a beast. respect.
I also got to roll with the instructor a couple times, well really we were movement drilling. i did well.
I didn’t do any open rolling today again bc I still don’t know any submissions or escapes so im not going to just jump in and get smashed yet. I probably should but im still too scared lmao. im the most beginner person in the class and im content just watching the open rolling tbh
BJJ is allowing me to come to terms with vulnerability head on. I’m not used to sticking with something that I feel bad at, normally I can’t stand it. I’m used to being unnaturally good for a beginner at stuff, or otherwise giving it up right away. But BJJ is pushing me. I can’t do all the warmups that we do before we start, even. But I put forth my best effort and yeah even though I feel a little insecure about not being great at it, my classmates and instructor are all very supportive. I love the atmosphere.
I’m actually not getting discouraged, I’m excited to be able to learn in a supportive environment. And _that_ is major growth for me. I don’t know how many times I’ve quit stuff I was really excited about because I didn’t meet my expectations, even in really supportive environments. The few things I have stuck through, I went through mental agony over not meeting my expectations.
I guess it helped that I went into this with low expectations for myself. Which is another sign of major growth. Im the king of unreasonable expectations for myself, just ask anyone who knows me well. I’m really grateful BJJ has been introduced into my life and it’s helping me in ways I didn’t even expect.
