Ah, i wondered when you'd show up. Thank you anon for providing me with this opportunity to touch on some important issues.
You see, in the Finnish language letters a and ä are not interchangable. They are not different forms of the same letter, but two completely separate letters, listed independently in the alphabet we use to write Finnish.
Did you know, that in Finnish, a and ä can't even be in the same word, unless it's a compound word? This is because in Finnish we have this thing called vowel harmony, that categorises vowels into front vowels, back vowels and neutral vowels. The more you know! 💫
I have highlighted this issue by quoting the man himself (song Puuta heinää, i think you should hear it) in the edit i made of your ask. See, if i had typed "palapalapala", that in finnish would mean "piecepiecepiece" or "bitbitbit". Instead, i used the correct vowel, ä, and typed "päläpäläpälä", which means blahblahblah. Lässynlää wouldn't even work with a instead of ä, as a and y cannot coexist! (See the previous paragraph about front and back vowels).
Other excellent examples you could find in his music are things like shouting "mitä vittuu, hä, mitä, mitä?!" Because you see if you were to replace the ä in hä with an a, it would go from "huh?" to "hah!"
What a difference! Fascinating, isn't it.
Did you know, that the Finnish word "kaari" means "arch" or "bow"? As in the word "sateenkaari" which means rainbow. Kaarija doesn't mean anything, though it does sound like "kaaria" which would be the plural partitive of kaari. Did you know Finnish has 14 or 15 grammatical cases depending on who you ask? How can that be?! Well you see, Finnish linguists tend to argue about the validity of one of the grammatical cases that used to be recognised as such but today widely isn't.
But, prettymajestical, how do i type ä when i need it in order to be understood?! Good question. Unlike you jabronis, i have ä, ö and å right there on my keyboard right. How your phone or laptop works is not my problem <3 But i'm sure even your phone can do it in this time of super advanced technology we live in! Just ask her.
If you want to chat more about the Finnish language, feel free to drop in anytime! I love my language and there's an ever growing community on Tumblr that could really benefit from your hard hitting questions and whimsical takes on the language.
