Yngya’s Repose - Behind the Scenes

Now that Yngya's Repose has been completed for a while, I'd like to share the "behind-the-scenes" notes I created for it and explain my process with writing it.

Yngya's Repose was an especially interesting story because it was the first time I followed a consistent three-act-plot structure, the one with all the pinch points, inciting incidents, plot points, mid points - basically all the things I should have known about writing ages ago, wrapped up in one neat little 25k fanfiction.

I am posting my notes to track the development process of my CotL fic series and to share the process of developing a story. Most of the time, your favorite fanfic authors aren't coming up with things on the spot. We don't magically whip ideas out of nowhere and consistently string everything together. We take notes. We test ideas. We try things and scrap them all the time. No one writes a perfect story, especially on the first try, so if you're a fellow fic writer, please let this post remind you that writing is supposed to be a flawed and beautiful process.

Yngya's Repose was originally called "Project: Four" after its timespan of four years ("Ilidae the fourth year isn't finish so technically it's not four years" i'm aware let's just pretend lol). I named it Yngya's Repose after the unknown character Yngya mentioned in the Fanatic's writings. It's implied that Yngya was the crown-bearer of seasons, and when they died, the seasons stopped shifting.

Anyway I decided no fuck that she's alive just asleep and also she's a girl because we have soooo many masculine figures in CotL you can spare another girl.

Narinder meeting the Mystic Seller was supposed to be the inciting incident. Even after the story's done I'm not 100% sure it was a dramatic enough incident lol.

"A blizzard starts" no it doesn't i forgot Yngya was "dead" whoops.

Also, if you think of cool quotes or moments while daydreaming about your story, WRITE THEM DOWN. Even if they don't have a complete concept DO IT. DO IT DO IT DO IT any notes are better than no notes.

I scratched out quite a bit here lol.

Also, this is where more character motivations, specifically the Lamb's motivations, come through. If you take one thing from these notes please take this: stories driven by a character's motivation will always be stronger than one simply driven by plot.

Also left out a little bit here, my bad ya'll.

Past the halfway point, the midpoint, is often the biggest struggle for writers because it shifts the momentum of the story. There should be a segment between the midpoint and the third plot point (75% mark) where the protagonist (in this case, Narinder) must be reactive instead of proactive. Which is pretty convenient because he's literally known for waiting lol.

That said, I wanted to kill that "One Who Waits" idea behind Narinder in this story. Here, he's free, and makes his own challenging decisions. Once we get past that 75% mark, though, he won't have to wait any longer.

OOOH IT'S THE CLIMAX (ooh the climax ;))

ok real stuff aside the climax in the BIGGEST part of the story (importance-wise) so make it dramatic! Make it count!

This is technically the end of the story, but directly leaks into the primary fic in the series, which now has two chapters out and updates (hopefully) every Friday! I linked Yngya's Repose and All Is Fair in Death and War throughout this post, but they are also in the masterpoint on my account.
