FOTD #009 : yellow fairy cups! (bisporella citrina)
yellow fairy cups (AKA lemon discos) are fungi in the family helotiaceae. they are found in north africa, asia, europe, australia, new zealand, north america, & central + south america. fruit bodies are typically encountered growing in dense clusters on the surface of rotten wood (especially deciduous trees), particularly beech.
the big question : can i bite it?? nah - they are inedible.
b. citrina description :
"fruit bodies begin as spherical, closed globules, before expanding. the smooth, bright yellow fruit bodies are small—typically less than 3 mm (1⁄8 in) in diameter & up to 1 mm (1⁄32 in) high—& shallowly cup- or disc-shaped. the inner surface is smooth, & bright yellow, while the outer surface is a paler yellow. in mass, the spore color is white. the stalk is broad, pale yellow in color, & short to nearly absent; when present it is rarely more than 1 mm. the fruit bodies may be so numerous that their shapes are distorted by overcrowding. fruit bodies that have dried are wrinkled & have a dull orangish-brown color."
[images : source (same source for both)] [fungus description : source]
"THEY'RE SO CUTE !! i WANNA POKE 'EM :-) idc that they're inedible. i'm putting them in my mouth."

Lemon drop fungi Bisporella citrina
The disks or cups of B citrina are only a few millimeters across, so it’s no wonder they can be easily missed despite their vibrant color.
They can be typically found on barkless decaying logs or in the cracks where bark is beginning to peel.
Common names include lemon drops or yellow fairy cups.
Though they might be walked past without a thought, but catch them in sunlight and the color is almost dazzling.
They can be somewhat conical shaped or flatten into disks. They might have a very short stem, but this will lack any noticeable length or development which would be present in some lookalike species.
I find them from summer through fall. You need a decent eye for detail, but they’re not uncommon.

guess it’s time for a pwetty mushwoom
SO tru and i'd love to talk about some other disco fungi. the reason u'll see some fungi with "disco" in the name is because they belong(ed) to a taxonomic class called Discomycetes!
many of these fungi are cup fungi, including the Hairy Nuts Disco, which begins as a cup shape and then flattens out into a little piece of bologna over time.
these are Lemon Disco fungi :) or Bisporella citrina

🍋 👯♀️ This funky little fungus is called LEMON DISCOS (Bisporella citrina). But it's not because it likes to party! It's because its phylum, Ascomycota, used to be called Discomycetes. Heck with it, we're having a fungus party! 🍄 📷: aeterno/iNaturalist/CC-BY-NC-ND http://bit.ly/2XcjJ25

Mushroom Collection #1
Post-It challenge is ongoing and the main theme for February I went for is mushrooms! There wasn't mush room in my schedule for mush more, but I at least managed to get them out, because I am such a fun guy. All the mushrooms on display are real life mushies and here they are in order: - Bald Knight (Malenoleuca melaleuca) - Fingered Candlesnuff (Xylaria digitata) - Lemon Disco (Bisporella citrina) - The Humpback (Cathurellula umbonata) - Hairy Parachute (Crinipallis scabella) - Cinnamon Jellybaby (Cudonia confusa) - Chicken of the Woods (Laetiporus sulphureus) - Bird's Nest (Crucibulum laeve) - Lion Shield (Pluteus leoninus) - Bulbous Honey Fungus (Armillaria gallica) More to come at the end of the month!
