Love to Yelena was soft kisses and warm cuddles on cold days.  It was holding Kate close and being able to close her eyes.  Love was gentle touches without fear.  It was her head in Kate’s lap and feeling fingers softly combing through her hair.

Love was placing delicate kisses on Kate’s lips as they lay together, not having to rush.  Love was intertwining their fingers, swinging their hands as they walked the dogs.  Love was being able to tell Kate anything and not have her run away.  Love was being able to tell Kate how much she loved her.

Hearing the countdown to the New Year begin on the TV, Kate shifted position on the couch and gently cupped Yelena’s face.  The sound of the fireworks filled the room as Kate leaned forward and kissed Yelena slowly, trying to convey her love.

“Happy New Year, Yelena,” Kate smiled, gently caressing Yelena’s face with her thumb.

“Happy New Year, Kate,” Yelena replied, moving her hand to Kate’s and intertwining their fingers.  “This year, I want to spend more time with you.  I want to travel with you.  Will you be the Hawkeye to my Black Widow?”

“Always.  You and me.”

Red and green balloons filled the street below.  The Christmas parade was unexpectedly diverted right underneath their apartment window.  Loud music blared, kids were squealing, and as she pulled the window shut, Yelena wondered how many of Kate’s arrows it would take to pop them all.

“The answer is no to whatever it is you’re thinking of doing,” Kate said, coming up behind her.

“If I find out who did this, I will put an arrow in them,” Yelena mumbled, turning to face Kate.

“I think, for this, we can thank Spider-Man.  Best not to put an arrow in him.”

The Christmas carols played on the radio as Kate sat back and enjoyed the scenery as they drove through the country.  She had finally convinced Yelena to stay with her at the Barton’s, and it was on the condition they drove and not flew.

Watching Yelena softly sing along to Jingle Bells, Kate smiled.  Reaching out, Kate rested her hand on Yelena’s thigh, softly rubbing her thumb back and forth.

“Thank you for coming with me,” Kate said over the music.

“For you, Kate Bishop, I would do anything,” Yelena replied, a soft smile on her face.

“I love you.”

“Kate Bishop!  Come here,” Yelena called out from her spot on the couch.

“What is it?  What’s wrong?” Kate asked, quickly making her way over to Yelena.

“Listen to this,” Yelena grinned as she began tapping the keys on her laptop.

The room filled with the sound of bells to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star as Yelena finished the song and looked at her.  “Tumblr now has bells!  This is very entertaining for me.”

“Of course you found the bells,” Kate smiled sitting next to her, thankful nothing was actually wrong.  “It is the holiday season after all.”

“Umm… no?” Kate replied, clasping her hands together.

“Kate.”  Walking over to her, Yelena stood her ground and asked again.  “What are you planning, my little hawk?”

“I just wanted to surprise you with a nice dinner.  It’s on a Christmas ferry, and they’re making themed food,” Kate said, giving in. 

“You could have just asked me, my love.  I would really like to do that with you.  Also, you’re standing under the mistletoe.”

“I guess you need to kiss me.”

“What’re we doing here?” Kate asked, looking around.  The trees were thick and tall, large branches and leaves intertwining, only allowing slivers of light through.  A forest, they were in a forest.

“I don’t know,” Yelena replied, rubbing her eyes as she looked at Kate.  “Last thing I remember is putting tinsel on the rail of the stairs.”

“Same.”  Helping Yelena to her feet, Kate made sure they were both uninjured.

“Why are there fairy lights and tinsel around the trees?” Yelena asked, going over and examining it.

“I don’t know,” Kate replied.  “Should we see where it goes?”

“Perhaps.”

“Yelena, dinner’s ready,” Kate called out, giving the pot one last stir.  After not hearing a response, she shrugged and split the macaroni into two bowls. 

Making sure to add hot sauce to Yelena’s, Kate carefully drew a heart and smiled to herself. 

“Can I help?” Yelena croaked, entering the kitchen.

“Come sit with me and we can eat.  I made your favourite.”

“I love you,” Yelena said, surprising Kate by wrapping her arms around her waist and hugging her.

“I love you too,” Kate replied, pressing a kiss to Yelena’s head.  “Even when you’re sick and not feeling great.”

“How long until the turkey is done?” Kate asked, hovering around Yelena as she prepped some vegetables.

“Not for at least another hour.  Patience, Kate Bishop.  Food will be done soon.” Turning around, Yelena bumped into Kate and looked at her, raising an eyebrow.

“You can start to peel the potatoes since you’re so insistent on being in here,” Yelena said, handing Kate the peeler.

“But…”

“No buts, get to work.” 

Sighing, Kate went to the potatoes and began to peel them.  It wasn’t her favourite thing to do, but she would do almost anything Yelena told her to do.

Skating on the ice, Kate felt like she was leaving all of her worries behind.  Yelena had surprised her with a trip to the frozen lake, and it was something she didn’t know she needed until now.

Gliding over to Yelena, Kate smiled and pulled her close.  Resting their foreheads together, Kate took a deep breath in and closed the gap between them, kissing Yelena slowly and gently.

Yelena’s lips were soft and warm against her own.  Pulling her impossibly closer, Kate smoothly ran a hand over Yelena’s hip and up her body, cupping her cheek.

“God, I love you.”

Intertwining her fingers with Kate’s, Yelena walked alongside her as they walked through the lights display at the local gardens.  Arches were set up, white lights flashed, and there was a display of the Nativity at the entrance.

“This is really pretty,” Yelena said, stopping by the water feature and looking at it.  “When we get a house together, I would like one, and I would also like the little fairy and dwarf display we passed earlier."

“When we get our own home, you can get anything you want for the garden,” Kate replied, pressing a kiss to Yelena’s temple.

Looking out the apartment window, Yelena watched the Christmas trees flashing brightly in the apartments across the road.  Feeling a tear run down her cheek, she quickly wiped it away but not before strong arms wrapped around her from behind.

Holding Kate in her arms, Yelena gently stroked her head, running her fingers through soft dark hair.  Her back was against the headboard of their bed, and Kate was slowly drifting off in her arms.

“Have I told you how much I love you today?” Kate asked, trying to stifle a yawn.

“You don’t need to, little hawk.  I know you love me, and I love you,” Yelena replied, feeling Kate shuffle so her head was now against her shoulder.

Placing a gentle kiss on Kate’s head, Yelena took in the moment.

“Thank you for coming with me today, I don’t think I would have been able to do that myself,” Kate said, resting her hand on Yelena’s chest.

“I was not going to let you go alone, especially not during the holidays.  I’m sorry your mother wasn’t pleasant to talk to.”

“It was so weird seeing her in orange.  I just can’t believe, well I can, that she tried to get me to break her out.  I just had to walk out, and the things she called me as I left hurt.”

“You did what you needed to.  Never be sorry for that.  I’m always here for you, Kate.”

“Can we agree no surprises during the holidays?” Yelena said, resting her hand over the one that rested against her stomach.

“I promise, no surprises.” Pressing a kiss to the back of Yelena’s head, Kate knew how much she hated surprises.

“All I would like is to spend time with you, cook with you, and cuddle together while we watch stupid Christmas movies.”

“According to Eleanor, it tastes better the more you have,” Kate replied, handing Yelena her can of coke.

“I do not like it.”

“I’m not a big fan of it either.”

“Have you decided if you’re replying to your mother’s letter?” Yelena asked, noticing it on the coffee table.

“I don’t want to.  I’m trying to move past what happened, and I can’t do that with her always wanting to talk to me.”

“If it’s hurting you, then don’t reply.  The decision is yours, my little hawk.”
