Here's a LeoDia comic with a very corny bisaya joke xD but a joke that I enjoy nonetheless.

Context: the word "buwan" translates to either month or moon (depending on the context) therefore, there is no "correct" answer

Anyway explaining the joke makes it less funny HAHAHAHHAHAHA

Suddenly thinking about how accent is usually portrayed in translation. Example:

Why do they often translate it like That?

This isn’t applies to just Japanese manga. I’ve noticed it in other media as well. Hiori just happened to be the first example that came to mind.

How important is it to understanding the translated story that most dialogues of this Character with an Accent should have words that are contracted or purposefully misspelled? Is it important that the reader be constantly aware that this Character sounds differently? But everybody sounds differently when they speak. We all have our own quirks. (I don’t know how Hiori’s Kansai accent works, but this isn’t just about his accent specifically, okay.)

And I’m asking this as someone who, ironically, actually contracts/shortens words the whole time when speaking in my mother tongue because that’s just how conversational Cebuano works.

For example, the word know in Cebuano is kahibalo. But most people just say it as kahibaw, kaybaw, kibaw, or even just one-syllable—baw. Sometimes, we even mesh multiple words together: gamay og becomes gamay’g (gamay means small, while og is a connector word)

But if you ask me to translate a Cebuano story full of all such contractions in the dialogues, no way am I gonna contract their counterpart words in English as well. It would sound Odd, but this way of speaking is not at all Odd to us native speakers. I would not want our dialogues to be perceived as Odd. Depending on the context, I may just translate it as informal/casual versus formal/literary for dialogues that actually use the full words all throughout.

But this isn’t about the Cebuano language in itself, or any language for that matter. This is about accents. The sound and not the words themselves.

When I speak in Filipino, I have a Bisaya accent. This accent is characterized as being hard/rough when compared to the more smooth/flowy sound of the Filipino language. But note that despite speaking with such an accent, I do not contract my words in Filipino like how I would in Cebuano. I adapt to the language I’m speaking in instead. I’ll say the full word and only contract words I’ve noticed native speakers would contract.

Heck, I even try to adjust how I say Bisaya. I say it as bih-sa-yah, but when speaking in Filipino, I’d pronounce it as bee-saa-yaaa.

But there are just some words I can never sound smooth/flowy in. In this case, how should my rough accent be portrayed when translated to English?

Should my words be contracted and misspelled even when I speak the exact same words as a native Filipino speaker? Would you do the same for a native speaker fishmonger who has no accent but just speaks roughly in general? Am I cursed to always sound like a fishmonger in English even when I’m speaking gently? (No offense to the fishmonger. Us Bisaya just often lightheartedly joke about how we’re often perceived as fishmongers trying to sell their wares.)

I’m just trying to understand the implications here, and I’m coming to the conclusion that… translating accents in such a way is less about depicting the sound of it and more about depicting the Oddity of it. The foreign-ness.

one thing i’ve only noticed now is that, if they’re not being straight up aggressive, then filipinos will talk about indigenous peoples like it’s a taboo. one of the most bizarre examples of this is that they will whisper out certain ethnicities instead of saying them normally. i can’t count on one hand where i’ve met someone and the topic of origins comes around and the conversation ends up like this: “do you know XYZ? she is (now in a whispered voice) igorot.”

other times when you mention indigenous peoples plainly the immediate reaction is suppressed laughter or smile, as if you just said something funny instead of a simple sentence. when i was in high school giving out a sociology/anthropology project about death rituals around the world and i mentioned one done by igorots, one girl reacted like i just said an inside joke in front of the class. this was around the same time when i was old enough to understand the reason why my bisaya mother would make fun of me by calling me a tribal: because she truly thought me being mixed with manobo was a fact she can easily ridicule me with.

(the thing is, i’ve always known my mother was a racist so i didn’t realize there was some truth to her calling me a tribal because it was so normal to hear her make fun of me with racist jabs. also, my dad rejects half of his heritage so i’ve never had to think about being manobo - or maranao - at all as a child. i was just bisaya from davao.)

I miss my fellow filipino friend who was obsessed with saiki k too 😔😔 The headcanons of how each character would speak in pinoy was so funny. So, um.. filipino trigger warning 🗣‼️

Kaido is definitely a conyo english/filo speaker. He was exposed to a lot of english content for kids. My boy has a hard time answering filipino exams and quizzes, and anything with deep filipino. (He has to really focus when the subject is in tagalog, he's barely hanging onto his grade.)

Kuboyasu is a hard-ass tagalog speaker with formal tones. (He only speaks the way he's used to when joking, swearing and gangster dialogue etc.) I headcanon he's pretty okay with english, maybe it's because his old gang was a diverse group. But, he's not all that amazing with english as well. (He stutters occasionally when reciting in english.)

Saiki would talk formally in normal tagalog but with slight english to be seen as normal since it's the trend right now.

Teruhashi would mostly speak english to be prettier, but would speak fluent tagalog when the subject is filipino. Everyone admires her for being so perfect with both languages. (She probably knows spanish, too) (She has a bit of an accent, but it's like fluent english with a slightly rough filipino tone).

Nendo talks slightly like Kuboyasu, but more vulgar since Kuboyasu is trying to keep on the "straight and narrow". Nendo does NOT care to regulate his way of speaking. He probably speaks english only to mock aircon humor. And no, he would not speak english during the class itself. (It earns him a lot of minus points on his grade since you are required to speak english in all english classes).

Hairo is really good with tagalog. He's not great at english. He speaks little english, and it always takes everyone a second to understand what he's saying 'cause he speaks deep filipino. (It's helping everyone improve their tagalog, and everyone becomes more inclined to talk in filo.) (He knows Kapampangan but doesn't speak it, and no, I'm not saying this because I'm half-Kapampangan... maybe..)

Saiko speaks fluent english with an american accent. He speaks filipino but only a little of it. Kinda similar to Kaido, but he doesn't really have a hard time with it. (He knows Bisaya and grew up Cebuano, but he doesn't let anyone know that because he's embarrassed it'll ruin his american-english reputation.)

Hi Yeet,

I saw your post last night and it’s warms my heart to see that you’ve made a lot of memories with your family. The stuffed toy that your mother would like to bring home looks like a soot sprite from Spirited Away, but that one’s a pink version. I find those sprites really cute, just like the Wara-Wara from the boy and the heron, which is also a Ghibli film. One can assume that I like Ghibli films. I also joke around and add y at the end of the word, Wara, and say it’s Waray-Waray, which is an ethnolinguistic group under the Bisaya people, that occupies Samar, where my parents came from, and I know a little bit of Waray as well. The hats you wore all look cute and I was wondering if you wore the Capybara one. I find Capybaras to be awesome because they’re friendly with every animal. They’re even chill when they’re surrounded by alligators/crocodiles. It’s nice to see everyone in your family photos to be happy and smiling. As for the pineapple tart, did you find the best pineapple tart in Taiwan? I hope that I can try that in the future as well.

On another note, Yeet, I find your smile to be really beautiful, with the way your eyes look like they’re smiling as well, with your dimples showing as you smile, along with how cute your nose is. I wish I could make you smile a lot, Yeet, so that I’ll see your smile often.  I also like how you love and care for others, like your  children, your generosity when giving out to charity, and based on what I’ve seen, you have a bubbly personality. I like the fact that you’re a foodie, like your love for black thorn durian, for example, I like that we’re both introverts, I enjoy watching you mix and match different clothes. Your height brings familiarity to me, since you’re almost the same height as mama. I appreciate and enjoy your taste in music, and I learn new music based on what you use. Although we have different tastes in films, knowing that you like psychological horror and I like romance and other genres, like science fiction, I’d like to try and watch one or a few psychological horrors. Made in Oman, Raised in the Philippines

When people ask where I'm from, I proudly say San Francisco, Agusan del sur. Kay, of course, BisDak (Bisayang Dako) man ta! Pero what most people don’t know is that I was actually born in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman—yes, "Made in Oman" kunuhay, as I like to joke around.

For the first two years of my life, didto ko nagdako. According to my family, ginagmay kuno ko’g Arabic phrases at that age, kanang basic ra jud nga mga words, before giuli ko diri sa Pinas. Imagine a two-year-old mixing Arabic and Bisaya—murag lingaw siguro paminawon if na-record lang unta to. But honestly, I don’t remember much of that time, kay syempre, bata pa man kaayo ko. Pag-abot nako diri sa Pilipinas, my lolo, lola, and tita took care of me. Sila ang nagpadako nako while si Mama nagtrabaho abroad para suportahan mi. Mao nga, slowly but surely, nahimo kong true-blue BisDak. Ang Arabic? Nawala ra jud dayon kay Bisaya ra man akong nadunggan ug nasunod. Lingaw siya huna-hunaon nga naay "Oman chapter" akong kinabuhi. Although dili nako maremember tanan, it's a part of who I am. That mix of experiences—born in Oman, raised in the Philippines—makes my story unique. Made in Oman, pero BisDak gihapon nidako.

The second comic I created for our August celebration, the Month of Language, "Buwan ng Wika," includes both English and Tagalog translations, unlike the previous comic.

This comic is based on a "memorable" childhood experience. One night, I heard a tokay gecko (known as "Tuko" here in the Philippines) making sounds like it wanted to communicate with me because it was alone in our stock room. So, I asked if it could live with us. To my surprise, the Tokay gecko replied "Uh-huh", which sent shivers down my spine. I didn't know at that time that the sound it was making was its mating call (LINK: https://www.gekkota.com/gecko-sounds/tokay-gecko-sounds/). The experience was TERRIFYING. I will never forget that scary moment in my life.

PS: "Patay ko ani" or "Patay ako dito" literally translates to "I'm dead here" in English. I've changed "I'm dead here" to "I screwed up" to align with the translations in Bisaya and Tagalog. "Patay ko ani" or "Patay ako dito" are expressions that mean "I made a huge mistake," or they can be used to express disappointment or fear of getting caught in an act. "I'm dead" is not a proper English "slang" expression as it is often used to express exaggerated laughter or amusement, such as when someone finds a meme or joke hilarious.

Radyo (radio) is a powerful medium in the Philippines, and local journalists can easily buy up airtime to reach a wide audience. I remembered the time I was listening to funny story jokes that have a sound board laughing kid. My grandfather still uses this technology, and as far as I know, the radio he uses today is 8 years old and still working. My lolo always listens to his radio in the morning, afternoon, and sometimes even at night to programs such as a bible story, attending mass, funny bisaya story moments, and so on. He has so many gadgets, but he still loves to listen to the radio.
