Kings Roar - Part 1

It should have been him, according to Leona.

It should be him dead and not his brother.

Slowly tracing the bullet scar on his abdomen, he was staring at nothing; the only thing pulling him back into reality being Cheka, who was numbly holding onto his leg. Cheka hadn’t spoken since the assassination.

But who could blame him. A son should never have to see his father die. A son should never have to see his mother in a comma.

It shouldn’t have happened on Cheka’s birthday either.

“Sire?” A voice interrupted, an old man walking in. Leona always called him baboon because of the way he walked.

“Yeah?” Leona tugged Cheka closer, he didn’t trust anyone. How could he when it was one of their own advisors who has shot Cheka’s parents and almost shot Cheka? Leona may not have been able to run in front of Farena but he DID stop a bullet from hitting cheka.

“We want to take Cheka to-“ he was interrupted by hysterical wails as the child climbed up leonas leg onto his shirt.

“No. Nobody’s taking him anywhe-“ “You must be married by tomorrow, you must pick a bride!”

Leona looked stunned for a moment, before nodding slowly. “Sanura, then.”

The old man squinted for a moment, tilting his head. “The....The maid, sire? Not...a princess? Just....Just a common maid?”

Leona simply scoffed at the notion. “O am Absolutely not marring a princess. I don’t feel like dealing with a spoiled brat for the rest of my life. Sanura is the only decent female around here.”

The old man simply nodded slowly. “And....what of the boy?”

“What about him?”

“He is...no longer heir, do you wish to give him up?”

Leona froze. Give up Cheka? He may have envied his family but he didn’t hate them! No longer heir.....would he...feel like Leona did? Worse maybe? Having it snatched away at the last second. Leona swallowed hard.

“No. He is the heir. That doesn’t change.” Cheka’s grip lightened even if Leona was almost growling. He simply nuzzled into his uncles neck a bit more, holding on to him like if he let go, he would die.

“Yes...your majesty.” Those words shot pride straight to his heart, despite the circumstances. He was finally recognized...The old man left, leaving Leona and Cheka starring out the window again. Looking at the gardens, listening to the birds. Leona often slept there while the little furball tried to move his arm to cuddle with him.

“When’s daddy coming back?” A small, horse voice finally spoke up after almost an entire month of silence.

“Your father...can’t be with you anymore.”
