Scientists show the sun's magnetic activity influences the determination of its seismic age
An international team of astronomers, led by a researcher from the University of Geneva (UNIGE), has shown that the sun's magnetic activity has a significant influence on its seismic characterization, contrary to predictions in previous studies. Important data such as its size, age and chemical composition depend on it.
These results pave the way for in-depth research to better understand the nature of the magnetic activity and its impact on stellar oscillations. The study is published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
Asteroseismology, or helioseismology in the case of the sun, is a fascinating branch of astronomy that studies the oscillations of stars.
"To understand it, you must imagine a star as a big ball of gas in constant motion. Inside this star, there are waves or pulsations that make it vibrate, rather like the sound that resonates in a musical instrument," explains Jérôme Bétrisey, a postdoctoral researcher in the Astronomy Department of the Faculty of Science at the UNIGE and first author of the study.
"These vibrations cause the star's surface to move slightly and change luminosity regularly. Thanks to very precise instruments, we can detect these variations in luminosity from Earth or from space," continues the researcher.
Listening to the symphony of the stars
By observing these changes, researchers can learn a great deal about the star's internal structure and determine important characteristics such as its size, age, chemical composition or stage in the stellar life cycle. A precise understanding of the characteristics of stars is essential, among other things, to determine the properties of the planets that surround them or to retrace the history of the Milky Way.
Despite some major successes in recent decades, asteroseismology has also shown that there are significant differences between observations and the predictions of theoretical models of the inner workings of stars.
Over the years, various methods have been developed to reduce these discrepancies, with varying degrees of success. However, none of the current methods consider the magnetic activity of stars, its impact on the results being supposed to be negligible.
The international team led by Bétrisey has just demonstrated the opposite. It has established that the age of the sun, as determined by helioseismology, varies significantly according to the level of activity of the solar cycle.
To give an order of magnitude, the sun is around 4.6 billion years old, and variations of up to 300 million years have been observed between solar minima. Although these variations may seem small compared with the age of the sun, they are no longer negligible given the level of precision that will be achieved by future space missions.
Seismic age of sun correlates with the solar activity cycle
To better understand the impact of magnetic activity on the sun, the scientists analyzed 26.5 years of solar data, covering two complete activity cycles. They divided this data into about 90 small one-year series, each three months apart. For each of these series, a seismic analysis was carried out, making it possible to measure the evolution of the sun's fundamental properties such as its mass, radius and age over time.
Two independent data sets were used to check the robustness of the results. One came from the University of Birmingham's BiSON (Birmingham Solar Oscillations Network) network of ground-based telescopes, and the other from the GOLF (Global Oscillations at Low Frequencies) instrument on board the SOHO (Solar and Heliospheric Observatory) satellite, which has been orbiting the sun since the mid-1990s.
Regardless of the configuration tested, the age of the sun determined by helioseismology was correlated with the level of activity of the solar cycle. They measured variations of around 6% on average between the periods of solar minimum and maximum, which is very significant in terms of the precision targeted for future space missions that will analyze other similar stars.
For example, the PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) mission is aiming for a precision of 10% for the age of a star like the sun.
The study of the GOLF and BiSON data also showed that the impact of the activity cycle on the seismic age is more marked for the more active of the two cycles studied. This result is logical and expected from a physical point of view.
"However, the sun is not a particularly active star, which suggests that the impact of magnetic activity could be very significant for more active stars such as those that PLATO will detect," adds Bétrisey.
IMAGE: Evolution of the sun during cycle 23. The image shows a collage of 11 photographs of the sun taken by the SOHO satellite and highlights the 11-year solar activity cycle with minima around 1996 and 2006 and a maximum around 2001. Credit: SOHO/ESA/NASA

EE adds over 400 new small cells to increase 4G capacity and reduce congestion in the busiest areas
EE has now successfully deployed over 600 street-level mobile sites, known as small cells, across the UK, delivering on its commitment to add hundreds of new sites to the 200 announced just over one year ago. A further 411 small cell installations are now delivering enhanced capacity in high demand areas, including in major cities such as Birmingham, Brighton and Sheffield, ensuring customers can take advantage of download speeds of up to 300Mbps even at the busiest of times. Other new locations to benefit from EE’s ongoing small cells deployment include the cities of Swansea, Leicester, Coventry, Wolverhampton, Southampton and York. Meanwhile a host of seasonal hotspots have also received a timely connectivity boost ahead of the Summer, including Newquay, Paignton, Salcombe, Southend-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea. Small cells take advantage of existing street assets, such as BT’s iconic red telephone boxes, to help enhance street-level mobile coverage in busy areas where it’s impractical to build larger sites, such as city-centres and transport hubs. As well as being located on phone boxes, lamp posts and CCTV columns, EE has installed approximately 60 small cells on BT’s innovative new digital Street Hubs, further maximising the benefit of these assets to communities. EE’s 611 small cell sites currently carry 20TB of data traffic every day – the equivalent of streaming 8,000 hours of HD video or 280,000 hours of music – demonstrating the substantial value they offer to customers in high demand areas, as well as the importance of EE’s strategy to build prior to the arrival of any congestion whenever possible. Sites are identified via advanced network analytics, which highlights specific locations that would most benefit from the performance boost enabled by a small cell. Then, working alongside Nokia, EE deploys a 4G small cell solution which couples its licenced 1800MHz and 2600Mhz spectrum with unlicenced 5GHz spectrum to deliver standout speed and capacity.
James Hope, Director of Mobile Radio Access Networks, EE: “As demand for data continues to rise, small cells are becoming an increasingly integral part of our mobile network. Our partnership with Nokia ensures customers continue to benefit from our fastest 4G speeds even at the busiest times and in the most congested of locations, and we’re proud to pass another milestone in this project as we continue to invest in improving the UK’s best mobile network* up and down the country.” Mark Atkinson, SVP, Radio Access Networks PLM at Nokia: “Nokia has an extensive portfolio of high-capacity outdoor and indoor small cells that deliver premium 4G and 5G network performance in dense urban and in-building environments. This latest deployment will ensure that EE’s customers benefit from seamless connectivity particularly in congested or high-demand areas at multiple cities across the UK. We are delighted to continue our partnership with EE and support their ambition to deliver the country’s best network.” EE’s continued network investment will see hundreds more small cells deployed in the coming months, both in existing and new towns and cities. EE is also trialling the extension of small cells to accommodate its 5G network, with Nokia’s AirScale portfolio able to seamlessly upgrade to 5G. Last year, EE announced its first such small cell deployments, which brought additional 4G capacity to cities including Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Nottingham and Scarborough. In Newcastle, EE has worked with the City Council to deploy over 20 small cells so far, making use of existing street furniture to boost capacity in busy locations including the city centre, Newcastle University, and in proximity to St James’ Park stadium. Cllr Alex Hay, Newcastle City Council cabinet member for a Resilient City: “We’re really pleased to be working with EE to improve infrastructure and increase digital connectivity across the city. Matchdays see more than 50,000 people concentrated in a small area, and anyone who has attended football matches and other large events will know it can be difficult to obtain a mobile signal in those environments. By enabling the use of our assets for EE to deploy small cells, we’re boosting connectivity and giving residents and visitors alike an improved experience in our city. We’re proud of our reputation as a leading smart, modern city and are always willing to work with others to further develop local infrastructure.” *Rankings based on RootMetrics® UK and metro RootScore® reports: H2 2022. Tested with best commercially available smartphones on 4 national mobile networks across all available network types. Your experiences may vary. The RootMetrics® award is not an endorsement of EE. SoundCamp: Reveil 10
At daybreak tomorrow, I'll be once again joining the programme of Reveil 10: a 24+1 hour global stream following the Dawn Chorus around the planet.
This year marks a special occasion, since this is Reveil's 10th anniversary.
Reveil (2014—) is a collective production by streamers at listening points around the earth. Starting on the morning of Saturday 6 May in South London near the Greenwich Meridian, the broadcast will pick up feeds one by one, tracking the sunrise west from microphone to microphone, following the wave of intensified sound that loops the earth every 24 hours at first light. Streams come from a variety of locations, at a time of day when human sounds are relatively low, even in dense urban areas. This tends to open the sound field to a more diverse ecology than usual. The Reveil broadcast makes room by largely avoiding speech and music, gravitating to places where human and non human communities meet and soundworlds overlap. Each stream brings something different to the loop. Reveil 10 goes back to its starting point, giving attention to live sounds of places as first light reaches them.
The Reveil broadcast will be played out at Stave Hill Ecological Park in a portable auditorium by sound artist Michael Speers and architects Public Works. Swapping, streaming, assembling a collectively produced long radio form, REVEIL is a chance to gather tools and recipes for ecological radio, and listen together to acoustic commons in the making.
Reveil celebrates International Dawn Chorus Day, which has been celebrated annually on the first Sunday of May since the Urban Wildlife Trust organized the first such event in Moseley Bog, Birmingham, in 1984. Since then, it has become a global event, celebrated all over the planet.
The Reveil broadcast will be played out at Stave Hill Ecological Park in a portable auditorium by sound artist Michael Speers and architects Public Works.
Reveil 10 is produced in collaboration with the Locus Sonus soundmap, the Acoustic Commons network, the Cyberforest programme, BIOM Open Microphones, radio.earth, and others.
The Reveil 10 stream will be live mixed by Mixed by Fernando Godoy (Tsonami), Leah Barclay (Biosphere Soundscapes) and the Soundcamp cooperative, and it will be relayed by over 20 radio stations, including Wave Farm and Resonance FM/Extra.
Listen here.

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day.
Welcome to the working week although, for those of you working in the NHS, welcome to just another day.
Many thanks to everyone that listened to the radio show. Thanks for all your kind comments. Great work by Executive Producer, Emma Peters. Next week: The Letter A (Part Five). No Executive Producer, just me playing with myself.
I know I’ve said this before (blah, blah, Lindsay, so boring) but I am the luckiest bastard on this planet. What a brilliant weekend! No, seriously, that weekend was killer! You know that by all the selfies I took! Two events! The Trouble’s step count was through the roof; she sure shook that money maker!
Straight after the show, we made our way out to Essex to attend the 40th wedding anniversary party of one of our favourite couples. Married for 40 years? You’re having a laugh! I posted my photos on Saturday night and everyone that was there knows they were bloody lucky to get an invite! Posh venue, non-stop food and drink, and top tunes from Calvin Francis! We were all spoilt rotten and we know it!
And the weekend did not stop there! Oh, no, The Trouble and I did some double raving this weekend. Many thanks to everyone that came down to UNDR in Ladbroke Grove for Mi-Soulful Sundays. Big-up to Jon Jules for hosting such a good event. What a nice vibe! Hope to be back there soon!
And the mad thing is … we’ll be doing it all over next week in Birmingham! Straight after the show next week, we’ll be up the motorway for the Soul4U Weekender. What a line-up of DJs! Very pleased to be part of it! Got one set on Saturday night and another set on Sunday afternoon. Really looking forward to it. And there are day passes too!
I will need several early nights this week, although possibly not tonight, as I have to pop in to John Saunderson’s music industry networking event in Waterloo. Yes, more bloody selfies!
Have a marvellous and momentous Monday. I love you all.
