what i learned from the bipoc skam austin event
Auditions
Val’s audition was wild for anyone wondering. She felt out of place so just went wild and intense for auditions, which worked out in her favor!
Julie wanted a free meet and greet with Julie Andem since she had been a skam fan
Julie learned about skam through tumblr
Lakeisha was interested for the money (professional rate)
Lakeisha wanted to work w/ Julie Andem because of the shoes/clothes she wore when they met
Julie Andem bought a specific jacket similar to one Lakeisha has cause she liked theirs
Quotes
“Norwegians have so much swag…they’re so cool” ~ Julie
“No one tells stories like the one that was about to be told” ~Val
“its literally just go crazy go stupid” ~ Val about improv
Character Details
Jo squared IS confirmed canon bitches
Jo was gonna have a season about being undocumented
Val and Pedro went into detail about what their projected storylines for their characters would be and its importance for Mexican American stories
Pedro was gonna be adopted by a white(?) family and his and Jo’s lives were meant to parallel each other
Julie got the apology scene to happen in s2
Julie confirming meg was gonna have an alcoholic storyline because of her parents who were always fighting
Facebook
the cast confirming Facebook basically ghosted every single one of them
i think we all need to bully Facebook into renewing the show for how they treated the entire cast…literally ghosted everyone. and facebook even lied to Julie/Norway/NPR about giving them a full on website like the og…not a facebook watch page
General Cast Info and Discussion Topics
Val and Julie like Marlon (Jonas’ actor)
both Shelby and Julie hurt themselves filming the s2 party scene where meg kisses shay
Lakeisha rambling about how she would have brought black culture into s3 and onto set!
collared greens and fried chicken were of big importance to bring on set lol
talking about the differences that mexican-americans have amongst themselves, from Val to Julie to Pedro to Sophia, in the States
Lakeisha saying they didn’t get to feel like the first lesbian isak…fuck everyone who got austin cancelled
also apparently Sophia (Abbys actor) is also mexican…so like when we say austin has the most diverse cast we mean it
Julie and most of the others do not like Marlon as a character
Julie and Pedro talking about marjo in the chat lmao
everyone was hyping Shelby and her acting so much when they were doing scene rewatches!
Val actually got physically injured by the extras in the fight scene
Val discussing how she felt embarrassed about her accent while shooting s1
The sexualization of latinas, including Jo, in media
While the cast was diverse, the crew and writers were mostly white (and I think mostly men)
Some Shade (Maybe)
a few times the cast hinted at their dislike of kennedy lmao, are we surprised?
Julie said she didn’t watch scenes of s2 unless her or her friends were in them (so she could have just said she watched s2 if kennedy was her friend, but she was very specific to say she only watched her scenes and her friends)
Sierra (what up girl) in the chat said “go away grace” and Pedro and Val said “lmaoooo” and “bye :)”  and “gudbye” in the chat
they NEVER talked about Kennedy OR Grace even if she was in the scenes they were watching, but they would compliment Shelby often in their panel or the chat

Hey Skamily!! There’s this awesome BIPOC Voices of SKAM: Austin Edition  event brought by @6degreesofconnection that I think you’ll be very interested in. The panel is for all SKAM fans, not just the Austin remake. It will touch on topics all SKAM fans may be interested in such as representation in all of the  SKAM universe.

skam austin cancellation is just another proof that this fandom doesn’t care about bipoc or lesbian representation

let me be angry about wtfock’s choices PLEASE
hot take apparently a lot of people like to claim that they listen to BIPOC and be actively anti-racist and then call me, a WOC, racist for being upset that skam postponed a muslim woc’s season for a white character we have never heard of. i’m sorry but television rarely gives poc well developed characters but skam typically does, which is why i was so excited for yasmina’s season, as a woc.
people aren’t getting the fact that wtfock may not be renewed for a fifth season, seeing that italia and netherlands and austin have not regardless of popularity, meaning we DONT KNOW FOR SURE IF YASMINA WILL GET HER SEASON. that is my biggest worry (pls lmk if they have confirmed s5!!!!) i understand that they delayed it for ramadan, and i understand that setting her season during ramadan is important for showing muslim practices.
however, what i do not understand is why a character we have never heard of must be the main, instead of moyo or someone we know well, like luca or amber or even aaron. moyo is arguably a new character from OG and different than mahdi, so i do not understand why wtfock could not gain the rights from nrk/julie andem to produce his season the way arthur in skam france was given his own season. moyo’s season would have been perfect given the civil rights movements like black lives matter happening around the world, as well as addressing his toxic masculinity issues. and we know amber isn’t a blocked character as viri (skam espana’s equivalent) was one of the mains of s3.
and yes, i am quick to make assumptions about wtfock given that we have six clips. however, i am free to my own opinion, as an audience member. i have a right to express my disappointments. look at how wtfock fandom was angry when sander didn’t appear in two episodes. look how angry wtfock fandom was at moyo in the first damn episode of s3. people forget that skam is still very much a television show open for interpretation and allowed to be criticized.
plus nora dari is literally AN ANGEL, and wtfock casted her perfectly, given that she’s moroccan (as og sana is) and muslim/hijabi. her character has been well developed since s1 and i was rlly excited for her development and relationship with islam/hijab (as belgium does not allow religious clothing to be worn in school). so many of the sana remakes have been sidelined for noorhelm drama, and seeing that zoe and senne break the boundaries with noorhelm dynamics, i was so ready for a zoe/noora drama free sana remake. so allow me to be upset over one of my favorite skamverse actresses not getting her season rn :(
sorry wtfock but am not excited about kato’s season...what happened to giving skam characters diversity lmao
