This may sound really stupid but what are TERFs?

It’s not stupid at all! Especially since–fun fact–TERFs generally hate being called TERFs and will find all kinds of cutesy ways to describe themselves, not unlike nazis calling themselves the “alt-right”.

TERF stands for “trans-exclusionary radical feminist” and refers to people who (often violently) deny the existence of trans people. IE, they insist that trans men are actually just “indoctrinated” self-hating women, and that trans women are actually men trying to “infiltrate” female safe spaces. They’re often violently biphobic as well, they often insist up and down that trans women dating lesbians are inherently abusive or that respecting trans women means you’re not “really” a lesbian, etc.

It is an ugly, ugly rabbit hole to go down. As you can imagine, any ideology that STARTS with denying the humanity and even existence of entire groups of people does not produce good things further down the line.  Compassion and acceptance are anathema to these people.

(Remember how I said terfs often don’t call themselves that because they, obviously, have a super bad reputation in the queer community? Avoid anyone who calls themselves a “radical feminist”, “gender critical”, “lesbian separatist” or talks about “womyn”–THAT ONE IS THE ULTIMATE RED FLAG–”woman born”, “biowomen” etc. Which is a shame, because Biowoman sounds like the trans lesbian android superhero we all deserve.)
