This is going to divide the community. Some of us recognise bioreproduction as the honeypot of the capitalist machine, the contribution towards the infinite growth of biology that's mirrored in the infinite growth of the market, towards uncertain ends, no matter the suffering of those who are brought into a now-dying world.
Allow me to justify myself.
I pride infertility and lives built not on fulfilling duties assigned by a broken system but lives of self-fulfilment in spite of it.
"Is raising kids not a valid method of self-fulfilment, elfpee?" Of course it can be, but there's valid ethical critiques to be made of continuing the cycle uncritically instead of adopting, unrelated to any ecofascist argument using the overpopulation myth and whatnot. It's just a question of whether new life, especially in the era of unprecedented signs of collapse, can be justified. Raising kids as an abstract thing to do is (theoretically) value neutral.
Some people desire family. I encourage adopting as orphans have been put into this world already and have already been fucked over by an unjust system. Surely, it's kinder to take care of those who already have a life they need to live out instead of choosing to neglect them in favour of producing suffering souls that share your DNA sequence? I'm naturally suspicious of parents as mine shouldn't have been, and I'm a broken person (in the eyes of the system, I don't *feel* broken more so as I accept my own mortality as something for me to decide) as a result of their poor craftsmanship.
Any way you put it, when we work from an ethical framework of trying to discern right from wrong given our current situation *as a species*, reproduction is an incredibly *petty* move. Parents have children for *petty* reasons, if you know you know. If you don't, good for you, a society of losers and winners still has winners, but your experience is not universal.
Those who don't internalise this viewpoint will likely be reconditioned into cisocietal notions of the family that starts with the woman as a machine-for-birth under the husbands ownership and recreate the relations of world we've been fighting for the last 200-2000 years of struggle against cisociety/Abrahamic religions and their bitter hatred for free individuals.
The peace this can bring some women is, of course, invaluable. You do what you have to do. If that thing is birth, more power to you. I wish it wasn't because of my own ethical framework, but this is not an attack on your decisions or feelings. At the end of the day nothing I say or do can stop you from doing what makes you happy so if you read this and get very offended by my notions please keep that in mind instead of yelling nasty words at me. We have enough of that already. Birth has become a very controversial subject, you might notice patterns as to where who believes in what stands on it.
What I find worrying, in terms of ideology, is how in my experience there are primarily two types of people who seem to obsess over womb transplants: pro-growth technofetishistic neoliberals (timid LaRouchers imo) who can't identify adopted children as their own and therefore need wombs to create "worthy" children, and the more (honest) explicit far right fascists who straight up struggle with affirming womanhood (in themselves or others) unless said womanhood can fulfil the role of becoming a nurturer to born life who, again, do not see adoption as an equal option.
These specific notions of reproduction are built on an uncritical interaction with the machinery, and of placing infertiles as inferior to fertiles, wishing to emulate in both views patriacapitalist relations and recreate the cishet family structure that was made up in the 1900s to better manage the populace under biopower.
As transfem bodies become equally exchangeable with cisfem bodies in terms of the Great Species-Machine, the transfem identity will lose all negation it once held. All which remains is to convince the transfem community (already so susceptible to empty flattery RE: openly transfem soldiers in the genocidal Israeli military) that their womanhood can not be reaffirmed unless they willingly subject themselves to the duty of growth, the duty of the species, the biological origin of the patriacapitalist machine.
This would be a disaster. Our solidarity is already a weak one as the transfem identity is absorbed into the girlboss spectre, to turn the obsessives and the rich into a class of lgbtq individuals superior to the infertiles in the eyes of the machine is to finalise the division. Especially as said individuals, informed by what made them obsessive about their need to reproduce in the first place, raise kids to conform to the standards of the society now praising them for being "the right kind of female".
Of course I am biased against birth, I don't really wish I was born at all. At the end of the day nobody has anything they ought to have said about how other people define their bodies or their womanhood. I am not interested in gatekeeping. I just want people to not have kids that have to grow up in the coming decades, by asking themselves honest questions about what exactly we're trying to accomplish, the consequences of technology that empowers relations we are trying to abolish and, if I'd be so lucky, present an alternative view to an issue that is dominated by a black and white debate of "normal people whom breed vs HORRIBLE DISGUSTING ECOFASCISTS WHO WANT YOU TO DIE NOW". Which is how most natalist debates are framed when antinatalists aren't properly represented, or worse, presented only by the worst takes as to make the very idea of breaking the cycle appear abhorrent. That's propaganda.
#Should probably stop calling it antinatalism#Thanks to loyal cooperation between leftists and fascists they've agreed to give that word to the fascists#So I'll just call it End of The Cycle Theory#Anti-progenism#Whatever#Womb transplants

Mini-grids and rural electrification will drive future renewable growth in Tanzania
GlobalData's latest report, 'Tanzania Power Market Outlook to 2035, Update 2022 - Market Trends, Regulations, and Competitive Landscape', talks about the power market structure of Tanzania and gives historical and forecast numbers to capacity, generation, and consumption up to 2035. Detailed analysis of the country's power market regulatory structure, competitive landscape, and a list of major power plants are given. The report also gives a snapshot of the power sector in the country on broad parameters of macroeconomics, supply security, generation infrastructure, transmission and distribution infrastructure, electricity import and export scenario, level of competition, regulatory scenario, and future potential. An analysis of the deals in the country's power sector is also included in the report.
Installed capacity for renewables in Tanzania increased from 69 megawatts (MW) in 2010 to 127MW in 2021, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.7%. The cumulative renewable capacity is expected to ascend to 1,115MW by 2035, growing at an impressive CAGR of 16.8% from 2021 to 2035, driven by Feed-in Tariffs (FiTs) and a rural electrification program.
The Tanzanian Government has placed emphasis on developing renewable power, especially in areas where there is no connectivity to the network. As a result, renewable power generation is expected to increase from 268GWh in 2021 to 3,040GWh in 2035, growing at a CAGR of 18.9%.
For more Tanzania power market insights on this report, download a free report sample
To meet rapidly increasing energy demand, Tanzania is currently implementing the National Rural Electrification Program in which it aims to increase the population's electricity access from 36% in 2014 to half by 2025 and to at least 75% by 2033.
The program aims to guarantee the electrification of rural areas through renewable technologies, for example, solar photovoltaics (PV) and coastal wind. The Rural Energy Board (REB), Rural Energy Agency (REA), and Rural Energy Asset (REF) were established to promote, stimulate, and facilitate access to modern energy administrations in rural areas of Tanzania.
Biopower (55.3%) held the dominant share within renewable power, trailed by small hydro (21.9%) and solar PV (20.9%). Tanzania relies significantly upon thermal and hydropower for meeting its electricity supply needs. In 2021, hydropower met around 28.4% of the country's annual generation. The unpredictability of annual rainfall, in any case, has created considerable gamble in depending on hydropower to meet increased generation demand.
Tanzania's electricity consumption has developed at an average of 4.8% between 2010 and 2021. This rate is expected to increase in the future because of a higher rate of industrialisation, as well as greater residential demand as the government increases electricity access rates and boosts rural electrification. The government ought to bolster renewable power capacity to lessen its reliance on electricity and imports.
With respect to the power sector, the electricity consumption in the country was stagnant in 2020 with meager growth of 0.3%. Electricity demand from industrial and commercial sectors declined significantly because of national lockdowns. Be that as it may, in 2021, the consumption became by 6.4% with the majority of demand coming from the residential segment. In 2022, the electricity consumption in the country is expected to increase by 5.3% as compared to 2021. The country is also supported by institutions, for example, the African Development Bank (AfDB), which invested $140m in 2021 to finance the construction of the 50 MW Malagarasi hydropower plant in Western Tanzania.

Fourth Reading Response
Readings: Achille Mbembe's Necropolitics. In Public Culture, 15(1), 2003, and the introduction of his Critique of the Black Reason (2017)
Necropolitics
Mbembe defines necropolitics as "the subjugation of life to the power of death" (p. 39). In explaining necropolitics, he focuses on the concepts of biopower, sovereignty, and the state of exception. Biopower is a term from the work of Michel Foucault, and it means "that domain of life over which power has taken control" (p. 12). Biopower functions by dividing people into different groups, "the ones" and "the others," those who must live and those who must die (p. 17). Mbembe argues that racism is an important part of this process because it regulates how death is distributed and makes the functioning of the state possible.
For Mbembe, sovereignty resides "in the power and the capacity to dictate who may live and who must die" (p. 11). So, sovereignty means having power over life and death. In this way, Mbembe's notion of sovereignty is closely related to Foucault's biopower.
Meanwhile, states of exception are when sovereigns transcend the rule of law for the sake of control. Mbembe focuses on Nazi totalitarianism to give a clear example biopower, sovereignty and the state of exception. He argues that Nazi death camps can be seen as "as the central metaphor for sovereign and destructive violence and as the ultimate sign of the absolute power of the negative" (p. 12). Basically, the Nazis took the idea of biopower to a new extreme by on the one hand, planning the survival of some groups of people within their empire as they conquered Europe, while on the other, creating camps designed for the destruction of other groups. The death camps are a clear example of the state of exception. Within the camps, prisoners were stripped of rights and existed only as bare life, treated inhumanely and without the rights and respect normally given to people.
Interestingly, Mbembe argues that the Nazi's project has its roots in plantation slavery and colonialism. In these processes, slaves and the colonized were also reduced to bare life. What was noteworthy about the Nazis is that they took similar methods and applied them in Europe to Europeans. Mbembe points out how South African apartheid and the Israeli occupation of Palestine are more recent examples.
Critique of the Black Reason
Here, Mbembe discusses the meaning of Blackness and how the experience of Blackness has spread beyond people of African descent. He argues that "Black" became the name of the slave during the plantation era. Now, "the systematic risks experienced specifically by Black slaves during early capitalism have . . . become the norm for, or at least the lot of, all of subaltern humanity" (p. 4). In this way, the world has become "Black."
Mbembe blames neoliberalism for this, where everything has a market value, and the world is "rationalized" based on "corporate logic" (p. 3). Now, most of the world's workers are replaceable, and Mbembe argues that they are no longer really workers but "laboring nomads," in this way similar to Black slaves of the plantation era (p. 3).
Mbembe also makes an interesting point about how new forms of racism exist that are technically not even based on race. This new racism is based on culture or religion rather than biology. He gives Islamophobia as an example.
Reading Mbembe reminded me of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. The genocide is an example of necropolitics in practice. The genocide involved one ethnic group, the Hutus, massacring another ethnic group, the Tutsis. However, many experts argue that the Hutus and Tutsis are not really separate races, and they also share the same language and religion. While they originally might have been separate groups, they have mixed a lot over time.
The firm distinction between Hutus and Tutsis is a product of colonial times. Belgian administrators developed the idea of the Hutus and Tutsis being separate races as a way to divide the people and control them more efficiently. As an example of biopower, all Rwandans were given identity cards that showed whether they were Hutus and Tutsis. Since it was often impossible to tell them apart otherwise, the identity cards were used during the genocide to determine who would be killed.
In this way, identity cards played a role both in biopower and in necropolitics. The identity cards were a way of measuring and controlling the population, and also a way of dividing them into two groups: those who could live and those who would die.

In October 2010, when calls to “save” the imperiled Atlantic bluefin tuna reached fever pitch in the news media, the three commissioners from the U.S. delegation to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) convened their Advisory Committee. Some two-dozen appointees joined more than thirty government officials in a banquet hall at the Silver Springs Hilton [...]. The group included tuna wholesalers, tuna canners, tuna lobbyists, commercial fishers, recreational fishers, trade negotiators, insurance agents, marina owners, bait-and-tackle shopkeepers [...] and policy experts from the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources, the U.S. Department of State [...]. Although this battery of experts meets every fall and spring, somehow the snaking hallways leading to the windowless room felt more claustrophobic than usual. The air was staler, the fluorescent light more artificial, the modular wall panels more intractable [...]. In principle, the period for public comment was supposed to act as a check on domestic administrative law [...]. In practice, this time felt like a formality [...] not unlike a public-service message on radio or television broadcast in the wee hours: necessary by law, short, off key, incongruous with paid programming. “We can speak ‘offline’“ was a commonly repeated phrase indicating that discussion was meant for closed doors.
Amid the reports and debates, the jokes and jabs, the rehearsed scripts ... the committee’s lead scientist offered his usual roundup of new research about the commercial fish under ICCAT’s regulatory control. His presentation included a series of [...] slides showing the tagging results of four lone Atlantic bluefin tuna caught on a pelagic longline vessel as by-catch from another fishery in the Gulf of Mexico. In May 2010, the crew tagged these four fish with devices [...]. By August 2010 -- over the course of only ninety days -- four tagged bluefin tunas swam from the Gulf of Mexico down to Cuba, along the eastern Floridian coast, past the Carolinas, by New England, and up to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence in the Canadian Maritimes. One dove to depths in the Gulf of Mexico where the water column approached zero degrees Celsius. [...] The tagging results on-screen looked like Orion’s Belt or some other constellation from outer space linking lines and dots to form a picture holding the human imagination in a trance, as these representations have done for millennia.
[T]his moment was the only one when to me the bluefin felt alive in ICCAT’s predatory regime of value, her majesty restored, no longer a servant of capital as a biological asset worth her weight in gold. [...] Once ninety days expired from the moment of catch and release, the tag popped up and floated to the ocean surface. What happened to the bluefin thereafter we do not know. Perhaps one of them journeyed right past a fisher in that tired room, unbeknownst to him, or jetted across the Atlantic to find kin in the Mediterranean Sea, disappearing like a phantom in a regulatory void.
A moment later, the marvel the bluefin inspired among the experts evaporated. Poof. Gone. There was an agenda to follow, a market to secure, a nation to imagine, a state to administer, an empire to amplify. To carry on the work of marine conservation relative to economic growth, ICCAT delegates transformed a fish revered for millennia into just another commodity for sale [...]. To legally constitute and regularize global markets for commodity empires, ICCAT delegates must learn to disentangle and alienate themselves from the vibrant brilliance of the bluefin -- of which they were fully aware -- allowing them to reduce her life to [...] a “stock.” The process by which imperial powers transformed the bluefin into property [...].
ICCAT member states regulate their imperial ambitions by distributing risk in a futures market for prized commercial-fish. [...] Biopower resides not only in legal ends or doctrine but in means or process [...], a seemingly mundane regulatory apparatus contributed to producing the fish slaughter after World War II. [...] ICCAT meetings [characterized] as ritualized performances operating in the seam of legal outcomes, as liminal as any other ceremonial event. [...]
[There was a] moment in the early 1980s when nation-states adopted for the first time ever export quotas for bluefin tuna. [...] Unlike commodities such as copper, steel, and soy, Atlantic bluefin tuna travels far and wide across maritime borders at a pace and speed technocrats cannot foresee or limit in the wild. [...] These [coastal sovereignty extensions through exclusive economic zones] were codified under the revised UN Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982. Many nation-states now claimed proprietary rights to fish, oil, gas, and wind within two hundred nautical miles of shore -- expanded from a measly twelve. Quotas for Atlantic bluefin tuna allowed nation-states to demarcate who owned what [...], part of an extractive economy now scaled globally [...]. Similar to flagged vessels traversing sea lanes, the bluefin has become a “vector of law,” affirming that very mobile biological assets could be enclosed for well-financed member states claiming a share of the tuna pie through the ICCAT apparatus. A handful of people from a handful of powerful member states made a handful of decisions to set new terms for the global commodities trade. It was their job.

tidal energy marketing Advice - What You Need To Knows
tidal energy marketing has become an increasingly important tool in today's market. While many companies have already jumped into the tidal energy marketing arena, it is imperative that you are able to separate yourself from the competition by doing the research necessary to ensure that you are offering the best service and price to your clients. As the tidal energy industry grows globally, it is critical to stay ahead of the tidal energy marketing curve by engaging the best marketing experts on the Internet and creating a marketing plan that will generate the tidal energy marketing results you desire. By conducting a full-service natural gas liquids and crude oil research plan you will be able to determine which products are currently selling well, which would be a good candidate for a tidal energy marketing campaign and which would require some tweaking to achieve better overall results.
There are several natural gas liquids and crude oil research programs that are currently undergoing testing or have been tested, but which may be premature to launch as part of a full-service tidal energy marketing campaign. In most instances, the company has conducted the research after the fact when market conditions have been established to the point that you can confidently make an informed decision on whether or not the venture should proceed. This would be the ideal situation. However, things rarely happen the way they are planned. Due to the uncertainty associated with natural resource markets, there is always the possibility of a company launching a program and finding out that it would be more effective if they waited until market conditions were more favorable.
In most instances, waiting a year or two before investing in a full-service crude oil and natural gas liquids research program is sufficient. The reason behind this is that natural gas liquids are not as economically feasible as crude oil. Therefore, if your goal is to make a significant profit rather than just a small return on your investment, you would be best served by waiting. The same logic applies if your goal is to build a long-term relationship with an oil company. Waiting to invest in an expensive program now will only alienate your potential client base.
If you are considering tidal energy marketing research, your first step should always be to find out all that you can about the technology. While there are some well-known experts that provide credible information and recommendations for tidal energy, you should also try to find out as much as possible about the technologies, the industry leaders, and the suppliers. The Internet is a great source for this kind of research. While you will undoubtedly find some biased opinions in the tidal energy marketing forums, at least you will have an expert to consult who has done his or her research and understands the industry better than any of the amateur scientists that frequent the forums.
When you begin your search for information, you will undoubtedly come across a number of different opinions. Some will be good, some bad, and some will be completely wrong. The best thing to do when trying to determine what is what regarding tidal energy marketing advice is to find a consensus opinion about the topic. The opinions that you hear may not agree with one another but they should still be able to offer good insight into the subject.
When you have narrowed down your list of possible sources for information about tidal energy, your next step is to find out how you will pitch your products and services. This is where you can take your lead from the reputable forums. These individuals will have taken the time to speak with industry leaders and others who are in the know to get their opinion. After you have assembled the pieces of the puzzle, it is then time to set up a website to promote your products. While a blog works great for a marketing platform, having a separate website devoted to your business can help make sure that your efforts to get maximum exposure.
As mentioned above, research is the key when it comes to tidal energy marketing campaigns. Without thorough research, you could be setting yourself up for failure. Not only do you need to learn more about tidal energy, you also need to learn everything you can about the competition. If you aren't very competitive, you might have a harder time finding prospects. However, if you are too aggressive, you could see your profits decline. Researching each potential market space can help you ensure that your campaign is effective and profitable.
Overall, tidal energy marketing strategies can work for small businesses or large corporations. Even if you just manage to get one installation started, your name will be known by consumers and you will have created an important new source of income for your community. Take the time to learn more about this exciting and potentially lucrative opportunity.

I said I’d share this ages ago but I 100% Forgot to! This was an essay I wrote for a university class on Gender and dystonia. It’s a nine page essay so it’s a long read but could be interesting to some folks! I also was a little burned out when I wrote this so please be soft with me.
In August of 2007, Irrational Games, at the time Known as 2K Boston released, the first game in the Bioshock series. The three-game series explores the ethics, politics and consequences of societies based in utopian ideals and how quickly they become dystopian. This paper will explore the first games world of Rapture, and its connections to biopolitics and the exploitation of capitalism.
After a mysterious plane crash, protagonist Jack finds himself at the entrance to Rapture, a strange concrete lighthouse. Inside a golden statue of the cities founder, draped in a red banner reading, “No Gods, No Kings, Only Men”. Created by billionaire Andrew Ryan to escape from the political, social and religious anxieties of a post-World War II world, Rapture is a libertarian state founded on individualistic ideas and objectivism.
“I am Andrew Ryan, and I am here to ask you a question. Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? 'No,' says the man in Washington, 'it belongs to the poor.' 'No,' says the man in the Vatican, 'it belongs to God.' 'No,' says the man in Moscow, 'it belongs to everyone.' I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the impossible. I chose… Rapture. A city where the artist would not fear the censor. Where the scientist would not be bound by petty morality. Where the great would not be constrained by the small. And with the sweat of your brow, Rapture can become your city as well.”
― Andrew Ryan (Bioshock, 2007)
BioShock’s creator, Ken Levine has stated that the world of Rapture was heavily influenced by the work of Ayn Rand (Nyman, 376, 2018). Bioshock challenges Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, imagining what that word might look like inhabited by realistic and flawed people (Nyman, 376, 2018).
Rapture at first seems successful, individuals are allowed to innovate and create without restriction. Ryan’s capitalist utopia begins to run into issues fairly quickly however as the culture of rapture begins to cause class tensions within the city. The over valuing of profit defines the nature of Rapture’s tendency towards greed and elitism. In Rapture, those who are dependent on society are viewed as parasitic drains on society. It is the good of the individual and not a common good or general will (Nyman, 378, 2018). This leaves those of lower means living in Rapture alienated and left behind.
In, Society Must Be Defended, Michel Foucault explains that biopower is defined by two different overlapping technologies of power (Anderson,616, 2018).
“... one of the greatest transformations political right underwent in the nineteenth century was precisely that, I wouldn't say exactly that sovereignty's old right—to take lite or let live—was replaced, but it came to be complemented by a new right which does not erase the old right but which does penetrate it, permeate it. This is the right, or rather precisely the opposite right. It is the power to "make" live and "let" die. The right of sovereignty was the right to take life or let live. And then this new right is established: the right to make live and let die” (Foucault, 241, 1976).
Capitalism in Rapture makes use of this new form of biopower, intertwining the viability of an individual's life with their ability to labor.
Even with the class tensions, things began to change between 1948 and 1952 with the discovery of ADAM by scientist Brigid Tenenbaum. A substance that, when refined into Plasmids allows the user to alter their genetic code without any limits. ADAM, in its natural form is found in a deep-sea slug. However, the slugs could not produce ADAM at a rate that could keep up with the growingly dependent market. The addictive nature of ADAM cemented its place as the blood of Rapture. Moreover, as the addiction began to worsen, the demand for ADAM spiraled out of control far past what Rapture could produce and soon withdrawal symptoms caused ADAM users to change into violent addicts called Splicers.
It is though the exploitation of children, specifically little girls that creates some kind of stability for Rapture. With skyrocketing demands for ADAM, Dr. Tenenbaum is pressed to find a solution for quicker production. Her tests found that only though the implantation of a slug into a viable host, ADAM production went up thirty percent. These children, deemed the Little Sisters, become the backbone of Rapture. Frank Fontaine, a rival to Ryan seeing an opportunity for profit opens the Littles Sisters’ Orphanage to house and supply children to become little sisters. Rapture has no social programs, no welfare, leaving orphaned children in an impossible situation. Moreover, many parents from low income backgrounds are unable to provide for their children. Fontaine offered lofty promises to the poorer citizens of Rapture that he would provide their children with safety, education, and a life better than they could offer themselves.
These little girls are now cogs in the capitalistic machine rather than children. They have been reduced to a resource, a manageable unit that society is dependent on (Andersen, 623, 2018). These children are stripped of their personhood, taken from their homes and families all in the name of profit. Opinions on the little sisters are mixed in Rapture before its ultimate downfall. With some, such as Fontaine viewing the children as a neutral rescue. Ryan upon finding out about the little sisters was repulsed but saw them as necessary collateral to keep Rapture running. Others such as Brigid Tenenbaum, the creator of the little sister however saw them as children being exploited. The little sisters of Rapture are the ugly truth in a capitalist utopia. Capitalism is dependent on the exploitation and labor of those who are invisible. The citizens of rapture are able to use ADAM to achieve limitless heights, but all that innovation and creativity is on the backs of little girls robbed of their personhood.
As the insatiable craving for ADAM grew, as Rapture fell victim to more political unrest and conflict with the working class. Dr. Yi Suchong saw a need for ADAM was greater than what was being produced by the Little Sisters themselves. He developed a way for ADAM to be extracted from the blood of dead Splicers In order to make consuming the blood of the dead splicers more appealing the children are conditioned to see the now dilapidated world of Rapture as an idyllic, colorful kingdom. This mental reconditioning was a candy colored counting on a grotesque truth. People were dying, children were being exploited all for the sake of a steady ADAM supply. These delusions coupled with their small size made the little sisters targets for crazed splicers desperate for an ADAM fix. Seeing the rise in brutal killings of the Little Sisters at the hands of the splicers, Dr. Yi Suchong developed the protector program, or Big Daddies to keep the little sisters safe.
Much like the Little Sisters, the Big Daddies are denied personhood. Created by genetically enhancing and grafting the skin and organs of prisoners into diving suit, the Big Daddies are another example of people being exploited for profit under a capitalist system. They did not consent to being mutilated and genetically altered. They have been both literally and figuratively striped of their voice in society. It is not surprising that the majority of Big Daddy test subjects included criminals, the criminally insane, and political prisoners, housed in a for-profit prison. These were individuals discarded by Rapture, people deemed undesirable. Yet, Rapture and its market are dependent on their labor and their suffering to waylay total collapse. This isn’t unlike our own history. These tests are biopolitical discipline, making those who have been marked as detrimental to the capitalist state useful while keeping them docile and under control (Foucault, 249, 1976)
The Little Sisters, the Big Daddies, even the Splicers, are all victims of a system devoid of social compassion or safety nets. The profitability of ADAM was placed before everything else and the structure of Rapture’s "gulch" style not only allowed it but encouraged it. Those with biopower are able to dictate life via the status quo.
“...we also have a second technology which is centered not upon the body but upon life: a technology which brings together the mass effects characteristic of a population, which tries to control the series of random events that can occur in a living mass, a technology which tries to predict the probability of those events (by modifying it, if necessary), or at least to compensate for their effects. This is a technology which aims to establish a sort of homeostasis, not by training individuals, but by achieving an overall equilibrium that protects the security of the whole from internal dangers.” (Foucault, 249, 1976)
However, one can only compensate for undesirable events for so long. After the supposed downfall of criminal and potential rival to Ryan, Frank Fontaine things in Rapture began to spiral. ADAM supplies ran low, civil unrest and descent began to surface. Ryan placed himself as de facto leader of Rapture, going against his own mantra of individualism. He began restricting freedoms and implementing harsh punishments for those who questioned him. On New Year’s Eve of 1958, a riot lead by Atlas, a mysterious figure who rallied the working class became the final nail in the coffin for Rapture.
The ADAM attention epidemic and the social political tensions boiling over from the working class into a civil war, ultimately lead to the downfall of Rapture. The limitless possibilities promised by Rapture and made reality by ADAM were never sustainable. Capitalism in Rapture, as well as in the real world has a body count. The term “Necrocapitalism”, refers to forms of organizational accumulation that involve disposition and death (Canavan, 3, 2014). This death can be actively caused by the capital gain or, as is the case with many in rapture a side effect of it. In Canavan’s if the engine stops, we die, he states, “What necrocapitalism marks, then, may be not so much a novel feature of capitalism but rather the ongoing intensification of these technologies of suffering past the point where they are possible to deny.” (Canavan, 6, 2014). The death and exploitation of those involved in the gathering and production of ADAM, the poor working class living in a state with no welfare, the disparity became impossible to ignore.
By the time Jack, the player character arrives, Rapture has gone completely dystopic. Upon seeing a little sister for the first time, Dr. Tenenbaum who has no devoted her life to protecting her “little ones”, begs Jack to help the girls rather than harvest them for their ADAM. They player has a choice, continue to exploit and kill these children for power and individual gain just as the citizens of rapture before them. Or, with the help of Tenenbaum help cure the Little Sisters, returning them to a state of near normalcy. Tenenbaum becomes an invaluable ally to Jack if he spares the Little Sisters, providing him with pyramids and assistants when possible. While it is more technically advantageous for the player to harvest the sister, it results in a bad ending. Sparing the Little Sisters means Jack returns to the surface with them, adopting the girls and creating a family and a life for them that under the biopolitics of Rapture they never could have had. It poses an interesting question about capitalism and exploitation. The idea of total freedom sounds utopic and ideal. However, these systems are always supported by the labor and exploitation of those marginalized by society. In Bioshock, all the difference in the world is made by siding with a woman who herself was exploited as a child and the Little Girls she cares for. In order for a “good ending” it is necessary to approach others with compassion, putting aside self-interest and power.
In conclusion, 2Ks Bioshock sets up an interesting and unique lens to critique the use of biopower and biopolitics by libertarian capitalism. This game reminds us to think outside of profit and power. Moreover, it exposes how profit often has a cost, a human cost that cannot and should not be ignored.

“In the sentimental politics of life, vital forces unleashed by sex and other forms of sensory excitement circulate among a milieu, adhering bodies to one another in promiscuous relation. Impressibility forges a population through shared vital material, even in the absence of reproduction and parentage. Yet biopower works through a zero-sum game that turns the social sphere into a competitive arena composed of bodies continually shaped through and against each other over time. Responsivity, relationality, and adaptability become technologies of administrative power. In this context, race and sex emerge not as interior genetic or psychosocial attributes of fixed organisms, but as biopolitical categories ranking the degree to which each body is acted on and/or acts on the larger population—which reaches backward into evolutionary time. The ongoing insidiousness of race and sex lies in their precipitation from intimacy, care, friendship, and alliance. They are calculations of relational capacity, and indeed, biopower governs at the level of basic interactions between friends and lovers, laborers and bosses, and neighbors and families, as well as the state-determined categories of nation and population. Sentimentalism represents a prime example of liberal individualism’s transformation of feeling, relationality, and care into an asymmetrical dynamic—a market of feelings. Biopower seeks to transform the very capacity of feeling into mechanisms of population security and biological optimization.”
--Kyla Schuller, The Biopolitics of Feeling, p. 33-34
